The employee Wilson was pretty rude to a customer this morning. Wilson's actually a transplant from the Durant office, which was closed indefinitely, according to their sign, due to an emergency. I recognized him from a few trips to the Durant branch. Today he was not in a happy mood at all (he rarely seems happy). The customer behind me asked him why the Durant branch was closed, and he answered, in short order: did you see the sign (on the Durant door)? Did you read the sign? If you read the sign, then what is on the sign is on the sign! Customer said yes, she read the sign, but when she tried to ask for more clarification, Wilson cut her off and retorted again -- whatever's on the sign is on the sign (paraphrased). Wilson didn't serve me, but I thought that response was totally uncalled for. Isn't there a more polite way to not answer the question, if he didn't want to? It's as if the customer asked him a controversial or personal question. It was just rude. The guy who served me, in contrast, was absolutely terrific (I just failed to catch his name). Passport service review: made an appointment for 2 minors passports based on the earliest availability in the area that worked with our schedule. I was hesitant because of the bad reviews but glad we proceeded. Our appointment was at 2:00pm. We arrived a bit early (1:45) and found street parking. When we arrived, we were told the person handling the passports was on lunch break and would be back at 2:00. She indeed came back right at 2:00 and helped us right away. We had all our documents and pictures ready. We had copies of the birth certificate and the parents' drivers licenses. The only thing we forgot to do was make a copy of the kids' passports which they were able to help us make a copy of (with a $1 charge for each). The lady helping us was kind and joked around with the kids. The whole process went smoothly and took 20 minutes overall for 2 kids passports. read more

I made an appointment on the USPS website to apply for a passport. All went smoothly with making the appointment online, received confirmation number, text confirming my appointment and an email confirmation with confirmation number, time and location. I was at the post office 10 minutes early as stated on the information provided by the post office. When I got there, I was told we are not issuing passports and USPS website have not been updated for months. How can an federal government entity be so pathetic? Additionally, only two tellers working the weekend at around 10 am even though there were four people behind the counter. There was another lady sitting on a stool in front of the counters who I am assuming is a customer service rep to address any questions; however, she was not helpful at all. I simply don't have the time and energy to deal with their convoluted mess. Yelp has send me something in the mail so I've been coming here daily eager to learn what is inside my stimulus package. I came on Saturday the 19th and Monday morning only to learn that their windows were closed. So I made an effort to stop by this morning before 9am. There was only one window open at the time for passports with many people standing there waiting for package pickups. The line took forever as they couldn't locate anyone's belongings in their storage room. This caused the line to form at a faster rate than the number of time the postal worker waltzed back and forth between the window and the storage room, repeatedly asking for the same customer for her zip code. On the other end of the post office was a mounting cluster of people wondering why the post office hasn't opened. It was already past 9am so they decided to form their own line without grabbing a number for the electronic counter. Right by the door was a third cluster where people were trying to send their packages through their automated machines but the depository was locked so the time it took for them to figure out how it works turned out to be a complete waste of effort. There was one woman who seemed to be in charge and would pace up and down the floor to answer questions. Despite the fact that she gave people assurances that things will work out, her confused facial expressions only demonstrated that she was not there to help, but to stall time until this place finally opened at 9:10am. Once the other windows opened, our line was already 10 persons deep and we were then told to go to the regular windows to pick up our packages on the other end of the hallway. The group that had already formed in that area was extremely unhappy to see us, and of course we had no other choices but to follow the directions. Once the line moved to the regular windows, they began to tell the first two customers that they will have to return at another time since their packages cannot be located. While this was taking place the group that were already there for regular postal services decided to form a second line and were still distilled about being skipped over by our line. Since the number dispenser was not working properly, one postal worker decided to hand them out manually. This also means that those who arrived to the post office minutes later would have no numbers and two confusing and hostile lines to deal with. Since the line wasn't moving at all, I decided to leave because I have way better things to do than to wait another hour just so they can tell me to come back at another time. No Yelp stimulus and no package in hand: Zero--big fat zero convoluted stars for the hellish experience. Post office or hellhole? You walk in to find rows of unhappy faces on the filled-up benches. Not a smile in sight. The building is old and drab, and the only automated mailing machine looks spiffy new and drastically out of place. Now grab a number from the dispenser and choose your waiting style: Some people stand against the wall with their boxes. Some stand in the middle of nowhere. Some wait outside. Some plop on the dirty ground against the wall. If you're lucky you get a seat on the long bench, hopefully next to someone who isn't stinky. Only two stands are open. My number is 17, they are on 84. So what is it? Wait 40 minutes or no? I am wise now. I promptly leave the building, knowing that I have more than enough time to grab lunch. I order and finish a sandwich, take my brownie with me, and come back to find that they are still on 98. I stand around eating my brownie, eventually find a seat, and waitwaitwait...to my delight, many have left and thus the numbers pass by more quickly than expected. And there it is, my turn. I'm all jittery and excited by then. The personnel are unhappy for a good reason. I would be too. They speak in monotones as if they hate their lives. I would... I am still drinking to get over my horrible experience. Went there for passport application for my family including my toddler and baby. I called them to make an appointment-not a problem. The morning of the appointment, I called to make sure they take photos too- they said yes. Ok, we get there. The woman working there, I will never forget her name, Phyllis was awful, awful, awful. She just needs to stop working with people. So when we got there they told us that they don't take children's pictures. So we had to walk a couple blocks to walgreens for Pictures. Came back we were waiting 5 minutes before the manager came out and brought out the whip. All the employee's demeanor changed and started to move people quickly. Finally after another 5 minute or so we were seen by phyllis again. She looked over our application and she said I needed to fill in the "occupation" part of my childs application. Phyllis: what's their occupation? Me:um.....They are babies Phyllis: then put that ! (said that in the most rude voice) Me: just baffled why she just didn't say that. What's the need to quiz me. Whatever! So the next several minutes comprised of her coughing, moaning, and sighing. I hope she didn't screw up our application. Oh one other thing, I needed to bring a check for each application. When your office is in downtown, going to another branch is just not an option. OMG, just when I was feeling guilty about wanting to go postal in this branch! I see that I am not alone. I've never had to wait longer at another USPS branch or any place for that matter. It really does suck having to bring every piece of mail over 13 ounces into a branch. They're supposed to take in the roll of numbers at 5 p.m., but they obviously work on a different clock, because I've run down there on a few occasions and gotten in well before 5 p.m. only to find that the numbers are gone and I'm SOL. I have been lucky with people giving me their numbers after being sick of waiting, thanks! The staff are very unhappy to be there and take their time (and then some) with every transaction, so prepare yourself for a wait. Most of them are very snappy when people attempt to ask a simple question. I've also had an awful experience with a carrier who was picking up from the boxes out front. I simply asked if he'd like me to place my mail into his collection tray instead a box just in case he had already emptied it for the day. He pretty much called me "stupid" and said to put it anywhere. He was a big guy so offering the comment of my foot up his a$% was a little out of the question. Hey buddy, I'm working on getting your name, jerk! Although, I may not resort to reporting him because he's obviously a miserable prick and that's punishment enough. My, my, how I've been waiting for this day. The day that to my delight, I read news that the main Berkeley post office, that has for years terrorized students and locals, now faces financial insolvency and closure. Yes, we can all rejoice in knowing that no longer will we have to put up with the pure hatred that some of these workers show towards their customers. No longer do we have to deal with them constantly losing mail and packages. I've seen one No-Sass worker who obviously hated her job dress down a customer for daring to come minutes before closing. Anyone who's ever been here knows that grey haired, freckle faced banshee that I'm talking about. I've seen customers desperate, angered, but always in the end broken, facing up to her sour and satisfied expression that all at once tells you that these are the moments that she lives for. No longer will we have to put up with post office managers who ignore Hold-Mail requests, and instead let it all pile up, broadcasting to the entire neighborhood that you're on break and would love to be broken into. I really enjoy post offices. Every time you go to pick up a package is like a micro Christmas. But the reason they're failing isn't because of email, or them being only useful to Netflix. Its because of places like this, that continually mismanage their duties. That continually place their most stressed out, and grumpy employees to manage their front of the house. I came here to send a package to one of my relatives. I got here about 4;50pm. After fumbling around, I finally found a box that fit the item wanted to send. I stepped in line and I noticed that people had tickets. I went to the ticket machine only to find the ticket has been removed. As I stood in line, a postal worker named Victoria started yelling "it's 5 o'clock, it's 5 o'clock. We are closed. I asked Victoria could I still send my package because I was here at 4:50 and she replied, "No, it's 5 o'clock we can't do anything. Victoria proceeded to call numbers in sequence. As I stood there, dumbfounded. I was in the branch before 5 o'clock and standing in line. Victoria screamed at each customers came through the door, "It's 5 o'clock. We're closed. We have to get the packages out. And, you don't have a number, then we are not going to help you." Luckily a very nice postal worker, Irene came from around the partitioned area and asked if I was sending a package and was planing to pay for with the debit or credit card. I said yes. Irene walked me over to the machine help me with operating the machine and help me pay for postage. Irene even helped me complete the mailing labels and showed me where to place the package so it could be delivered. Irene was very helpful and I hope she receives some sort of commendation. I work for governmental agency and I was appalled to see this type of behavior manifested by the employees of the post office. If anything can be learned from this situation, I hope that Victoria receives customer service and sensitivity training or is never allowed to work with the public. It was a disgrace to see someone in a public services position to act that way towards the agency's constituents. read more

I've always been big on having empathy for those who work in retail or customer service -- I've been there! -- but come ON!! It's rather hard feeling anything nice for these postal workers. I've been coming to this office for the last 6 months and it's always been understaffed and crowded -- no big deal, that's just the way it is. Take a number and get comfy with your phone. Today, however, I was shocked by how passive-aggressive and just plain rude the employees were! Yes, this woman came to the counter without a number to ask a quick question, but that doesn't mean she deserves to be snapped at and treated like an incoherent idiot! The woman weighing my parcel had a nice conversation with another employee as I stood there, waiting to pay. This is the worst post office I've ever been to. I've only been here twice, and had equally bad experiences both of the times. The employees I have been talking to, have been so rude and haven't been service-minded at all. The first time me and my friend went there, we had to wait for a very long time. There were about six employees behind the counter, and one were just sitting there behind her computer. Me and my friend just wanted to ask a quick question, but then they told us straight away to step away from the counter because "they had money there". The other time I went there, there were two employees behind the counter. After waiting around 10 minutes, one of them yells "Sorry lady, but we're closing now. BYE!" and waved at me. I got really surprised, but asked if I could ask a quick question. The woman behind the desk said that they had work to do and that they were closing, and then she yelled "BYE!" again, like I was the most intrusive person ever. This is the place where patience goes to die. Gandhi would have lost his shit in this post office. I went one afternoon to mail an envelope and there were over ONE HUNDRED people in front of me. The staff is surly, rude, sarcastic, and literally the slowest group of employees I have ever witnessed in my life. The debit/credit machine on the far right window has been broken for something like six months. I go here because it's a block from my office, it's cheap, and it's a gorgeous old building. Are we really arguing about saving this post office? Really? People? Really? This is one of the most pitifully inefficient operations I've ever encountered. There are a few places in the world where I know I can go, and leave experiencing feelings of unbridled rage. Among them: Downtown Berkeley Post Office, Emeryville Home Depot, North Korean Labor Camp. (I'm taking an educated guess on the last one.) Method actors, take note if you're working on shaping your anger. I'm not sure if I'm even physically or emotionally able to care as little as the postal "workers" there do. They have crossed beyond giving zero cares; they are giving negative cares. The pace at which work is conducted there makes me wonder if I have entered some quantum fluctuation in which space and time cease to exist in the way in which we Earthlings are familiar. Wait. Is that why we're trying to save this post office? For its scientific significance? Is this actually the site of a wormhole? A wormhole that passes into an alternate bizzaro dimension in which time has no meaning and where the concept of ambition does not exist? In all seriousness, I cannot imagine that allowing this building to pass into private ownership would be a worse fate than it is suffering now. It's really only barely serving the public interest in its current state, and the building is falling into utter disrepair under the USPS's "stewardship." (I cringe just thinking about the sheer volume of Scotch tape and packing tape that has been stuck to the historic woodwork in the lobby.) I will literally go out of my way to have packages shipped by any carrier other than USPS just to avoid having to go to this post office if I miss a delivery. Pro tip: if there are more than 7 people ahead of you, you probably have enough time to walk to Almare for some gelato-based anger management and make it back in time before your number is called. read more

This lady is just tossing the envelopes at me, sneered at my questions about addressing the envelopes, the pricing and the delivery time, and would cut me off before she would finish listening to my questions (btw, she would answer the wrong question if you get cut off)... Teresa is just completely rude about the whole transaction. I think I usually get another lady who is w lot more agreeable. As I walked out, even the lady at the other window looked at me apologetically since her colleague was being excruciating difficult with her attitude. The reason why I'm giving 2 stars is for the lack of effort, care, or knowledge of the office. I was supposed to receive a package last Saturday. It was delivered at 4:30 PM, according to tracking. However, I don't understand how the hell I missed the package when I was sitting at home, waiting for the darn thing. Then tracking states that there was a notice left-- that was a freaking lie. There was no notice, OR ANY ATTEMPT, to deliver my package. My apartment is right next to the front door and mailboxes, so it amazes me that I didn't hear the buzzer for mail. Again, I believe that the mail person had no effort/didn't care to deliver my package or leave a proper notice. I got to the post office around 9: 15 and only waited 45 minutes (Not bad in my opinion) today. The teller at the window was very kind; he did his best being the only window open and with a lobby full of people. I told him my situation, and he searched the back. It completely alarmed me when he said that my package wasn't there and gave me the manager's number. I called the manager, gave him my info, and was placed on hold for 15 minutes. Manager comes back, tells me that my package wasn't there, and that he has NO IDEA where is it. At this point, I was frustrated. I commend the manager for keeping calm, assuring me that he'll find my package, and giving instructions as to what to do next. Still, I was never this frustrated with the mail. First, USPS supposedly delivered my package. Second, USPS lied about leaving a notice. Third, USPS has no idea where my package is at. The lack of effort, care, or knowledge of these people somewhat shocks me. This is first time I have had any problems with USPS. And I know I shouldn't complain about the messengers, but seriously-- there were too many mistakes made here. Hopefully, my package is still somewhere in some lazy ass' truck. read more

Whenever I have to go here, I set aside a couple hours because they are so inefficient at their jobs and extremely slow. I even bring an activity to do while waiting. They may have a number system to call out when it is your turn...but I swear, it may be as bad as the DMV up in here. I am a bit biased because they lost one of my packages. This was because I was not home at the time to sign for it...so they left a slip saying it would be here and I just had to come down to sign and pick it up. Surprise! For some reason, they had a new mail carrier on my route and he never brought back the package. It took me several visits and attempts AND phone calls to retrieve it...later the next week. I would have given this one star but there was one guy that worked there that was friendly and helpful. It seemed like he honestly cared about his job. The rest of the people that worked there seemed rather rude. If you can help it, try and avoid this place. read more

WORST usps service ever in my life The staffs in this building have very very negative attitude to the customer and they don't care about your package. They are very slow working speed and if they want to take a rest, they just go into the back of the counter and chat there. They has inefficient waiting line. You have to take number always even if you just pick up the package.. They should make a separate line for just picking up. I waited one hour there with the notice paper to pick up my package. The paper said I can pick up the package after June 14th 11am. I came there at 12 pm and she said we couldnt find the package. I asked her what should I do? and she said I dont know just call the delivery guys and ask them. wow, why the customer has to do that? USPS has responsibility to deliver safe and secure. but she said we dont have responsibility and if you want it? find out yourself. It literality means i dont care lol. I actually used to stand up for USPS when they get bashed. But not anymore. They should really get some new staff to work here, like ones that don't give out false information. During my month-long break I thought I'd put my mail on hold so they don't keep attempting to stuff the little mailbox. I set the date for mail to resume, and select the option for "Deliver accumulated mail." 1st day after my set date: I call here, they tell me the mail is coming, things are running late, they don't even ask for my address to check. No mail comes at all that day. 2nd day after my set date: I call to see if the accumulated mail is coming. they say it is. I come home and find 2 pieces of mail. Okay, where is my accumulated mail?!? I call again. They finally find the pile. They tell me there's no record of vacation hold. Good one, except I have the confirmation # right here. They tell me they'll have the carrier come back and personally deliver everything before 6pm. How nicely things have resolved. IT IS 7 PM AND THERE IS STILL NO MAIL. It'd be nice if they just stop lying and misleading me. At least then I could just go to the stupid post office and pick up the stupid mail. read more

Can you answer this question? What do you get when you cross incompetence and lack of motivation? No this is not a joke.... The wait is horrible ranging from 20-40 minutes and no I have not found a sweet spot time during the week that takes less than 20 minutes. Here's a good tip...grab a number and if you see more than 7 ppl waiting which is the usual, go out and get yourself a snack, smoke, get some coffee or go to Ebgames which is right down the block for a good 13 minutes and come back. You'll be waiting for a long time.. I have to say nigthmares come true here. I had some important papers sent to me in the mail but since it was oversized and i wasnt home to pick it up, i had to come to THIS USPS to pick it up. Guess what??? Yep, they lost the papers. Yep, hope this yelp review helps... I will have to say the last experience i had was great. I've lived in Berkeley about 8 years, and I always dreaded going to this place. If you can, always try and hit up the North Berkeley Post Office (near Chez Panisse) the Claremont Post Office (up on Webster) or the South Berkeley Post Office down on San Pablo (right near University). The wait times are usually a little better and the people much nicer. The only thing that's ok about the Berkeley Main Post Office is that it's the main drop off/departure for all of Berkeley's mail so if you drop something off there it goes out pretty dang quick. Also, it is a nice looking post office--so for that I guess the one star is deserved (that and Yelp doesn't offer zero star reviews). However, for customer service & wait times --it doesn't get any worse really. And to top it off, we recently moved to LA and guess how many times we've had to submit a change of address form? 3 times people---and really we're not even sure if 3 is enough cause we're now 6 weeks & still haven't seen hide nor hair of our mail yet. The worst of course, is trying to get a hold of someone there--though that's not necessarily a good thing either as the guy we talked to had about a third grade education & no intention of offering, you know, customer service or anything. (Which can be said for the entire USPS system as I'm sure anyone can attest to who's tried to resolve anything ). so to minimize pain and agony, if you have a choice, choose another post office. however I know you can't really choose pickups/cert mailings so if you have to go, mid-afternoon on weekday is sometimes ok--especially when Cal is not in session. read more

Instead of being grateful for somehow still having any sort of job (I can't even grasp the idea that somebody deemed them fit for hire, in the first place) at all, the employees are utterly useless and apathetic. Okay, I"m not one to knock a post office for being slow because really, what else can you expect at a post office? But I've seen glaciers move faster. I've seen paint dry faster. I've seen freeway construction completed faster. For some reason everything is so slow here. Much worse than any other post office I've been to and that is a surprisingly large number. The downtown PO also has the added pleasure of drama nearly everytime I go. Seriously. There is one lady, who once told me she finds herself nodding off in her chair because of her poor sleep quality (hello, slowness personified), who seems to get into it with a customer every day. I've never had any issue because I don't do things that complicated, but it seems as though every time she gets a customer with a passport application or an international package to send, something goes awry and there erupts a full on shouting match in the very crowded Post Office. Sometimes people fill forms out incorrectly or want to get a service you don't provide, but honestly, yelling at them and not attempting to diffuse the situation at all is the worst possible way to approach a problem. This place is the biggest sack of shit business I've ever encountered. They have "lost" two out of 4 packages of mine. They were tracked all the way up until they got to the Berkeley location and then disappear... "Delivery status not updated". I called the post office and they said that the package arrived but wasn't scanned when (or if) delivered, so they are technically at fault by default. I've been on hold with them for 40 minutes, and now understand why they call it "going postal". My two 'lost' packages were a camera lens, and a car audio part... yet all my letters show up just fine. THERE'S A FUCKING THIEF AT THIS LOCATION. Be forewarned- I would just pay the extra couple $$ to get your purchases FedEx'ed to you instead. read more

Passport hours 9-1, 1-5. I take my 30 minute lunch to come in and find out there are zero passport services. Zero consideration for 9-5 folks. Wasting everyone's time. Get with the digital age and learn about applications online. This is horrible read more

I almost don't want to write this review because there really isn't anything that needs to be said that the other reviewers haven't covered - the service is slow on a good day and rude on a bad one, and coming here is never really a pleasant experience. It honestly would be okay if it were only the wait - the fact that their short-staffed means a longer wait is understandable, and I've figured out that if I come on Saturday mornings, i can check out the Farmer's Market outside while I wait. But what I'm not so sympathetic to is the hostility and unhelpfulness of the employees here - I've workers yell at customers for asking questions, roll their eyes, rudely ignore a legitimate question (mail is confusing, okay!) and far more. Their saving graces: There is one guy who works here that is incredibly efficient and always polite, and I've had the luck of usually being helped by him. They also take call numbers up until they close, so they end up servicing guests even past closing (as much as 45 minutes after, I've seen). If you're in a rush, you don't have to wait in line if you're just dropping off a paid-for package, so buy your shipping online if you can! read more
