Alviso residents are required to have a PO box since there is no mail delivery to our homes. That used to mean a pleasant daily visit to the quiet little Post Office in town. Word has gotten out that this is one of the few places you can do your passport paperwork without an appointment. Now there's a long line of grumpy people who showed up expecting immediate service but have been waiting for hours. This is especially frustrating for residents who end up waiting in line *every single day* to pick up or drop off packages. As others have noted, the office is closed from 12-1 5 stars for the incredibly patient and friendly staff! 1 star for the dirty looks from passport people given to Alviso residents just trying to get their daily mail. read more

For passport applications they take photos only for babies who can stand. If you are getting passport for babies less than that age it is advisable to click a picture on your phone and get it printed at cvs/costco. Also at home you can wait for the right moment and snap the perfect picture. Tip: We placed her in the car seat to get her locked in position for the camera. This morning I drove to the post office to arrive at about 8 AM, clearly I could have arrived later. I had a positive experience getting my passport photos taken from the Alviso US Post Office back in 2011. However, my experience was recently soured by the rude postmaster, April. I went in recently to inquire about hand-cancelling my wedding invitations to make them look cleaner and to provide hand-sorting service. They did not offer onsite hand-cancelling at this location (which is fine); April informed me that all my invitations would have to be transferred and all the hand-cancelling would happen at the (parent) office in San Jose. I was a bit hesitant since I wouldn't be able to make sure it happened. I asked if I should take them directly to the San Jose office to make sure they are hand-cancelled or help hand-cancel them myself if necessary (which I know people have done; a simple google search informed me of many others that have done it this way), but I was met with pretty rude and snarky comments (that I won't get into here). I can't tell if April just wasn't knowledgeable about this service or if she was just really not eager to offer any advice or assistance. I think she would just rather chit-chat and stay behind the scenes. After my interactions with her, I did not feel confident leaving my invitations at this location. Instead I made one quick call to the nearby US Post Office on Lawrence Expressway and took them there - they had no problem hand-cancelling my invitations right in front of me and were super nice about it. Appointments at other post offices for passports were out three weeks, I guess because everyone is going on vacation with summer approaching. It also says expedited passport service is another 4-6 weeks after the in person appointment. Well with two months before our trip, that was not going to work. I sent my husband here with all the needed documents and told him to pay for expediting the passport. He was in line about 1 hour at lunch time. There are three things you can expedite and we did all three 1) $60 to expedite the processing by the passport location 2) Overnight delivery to the passport location 3) Overnight delivery from the passport location to us. Total was about $100 in expedite fees and he received the passport in about 6 business days. :) read more

Picked this place to apply for US passport. The line was kinda long and had to wait 1hr. The lady at the counter was pretty quick, but she was doing both the regular post office customers and passports. Note that they close for lunch from 12 to 1 - so plan accordingly. read more

So, I never knew about the town of Alviso before. Its like a small town hidden in the marsh. Alviso manages to be both in the middle of the Bay Area yet feel in the middle of nowhere. As a consequence, this Post Office is a nice resource because there's not likely to be a line, yet it remains conveniently located for North San Jose. read more

Like others, I am torn about writing a review for this post office, as I don't want my little secret revealed to the masses. But since this post office doesn't even show up on the USPS website as a post office location, I think we're fairly safe. I work equidistant from this post office and the Lafayette one. I don't care where you're located, the extra 5 minute drive to the Alviso post office is WORTH it. I went at lunch hour. For those of you who have normal desk jobs like me, lunch hour to run errands is really a curse. Have you tried the DMV at lunch time? Or a normal post office at lunch time? Plan on not eating a lunch and spending your entire hour in line. Drove past the post office once (look for the chain-link fence on the right before Taylor St on the right, or you'll miss it too). Turned back around. Parked in the empty parking lot. Thought to myself how it looks like the post office is from the 50s. Walked in. Paid to mail my package and for my stamps. Walked out. In 2 minutes flat. It took me longer to find the office than the time I spent in there! Best post office EVER! read more

It is close from work and not too much crowd. However I am not satisfied with the service provided. I am wondering why it is not possible to have a prepaid return envelope with tracking ? The Indian agent ( female), convinced me to get the prepaid Express mail with tracking which costs $18. She said that this is the only way, USPS can make money and she get paid..I felt sorry for her ( not really).. She had definitely a sales pitch ..a desperate sales pitch. but previously I had done the return mail with tracking from Milpitas post office. Milpitas USPS has better service and more knowledgeable personnel, and I guess NOT mean people. read more

We went to USPS at Kylie (in October )for our babies passport. It was a huge disappointment as they serve passport application on appointment basis and the latest appointment which we got was in december .The person who gave us the appointment recommended "this awesome Usps office at alviso " where we just walked in and got our work done in less than 10 minutes. To my surprise there was no queue and it was very quiet.The location is bit difficult to find as you can easily miss it, if you dont pay attention.The white fence is what you are looking for to get into the parking lot to reach this Usps office. read more

I had a bad experience here, it was a shack like place squished between two buildings and sharing a parking lot with a community center. It is in little Alviso so I'm sure the parking lot doesn't get suuuper full but it was still rather busy. The post office itself, was very tiny, you could only fit maybe sevenish people in the office part to wait. Although there were two desks for employees, there was one employee, an older man who seemed retired and he was just doing this as a part-time job. As we waited in line there were two people ahead of us and the first guy needed to send something out and pay for it and the second guy needed to get a passport but only had a limited number of IDs and went on talking to the employee for days about what was acceptable as an ID. We waited for those people/tasks for like 20 minutes! My mother and I came here to set up a p.o. box and he went looking for the application everywhere for like 10 minutes. He told us the girl that normally works there called in sick and everything had been rearranged so it was hard for him to find. After finally finding it and filling it out, we got back in line and had him check my mother's information and set her up with a box. At first he charged her for 6 months but never bothered to ask us how long we wanted it, so we had him change it to 1 yr. All while three people wandered in and stood in line behind us. The whole process probably took us 45 minutes which is a ridiculous amount of time just to set up a P.O. Box... I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he really wasn't used to doing this job but he had his hands full with two or three customers when he should have been able to handle more... It mostly just made me feel bad for this guy, why is he working when he can't keep up the pace with customer needs? I know the post office system is a mess but geez... read more

So I must update my review of the Alviso Post Office. The wait time sucks but that's everywhere right now. So I arrived early at 6:15 am and I was the 4th person in line. The lobby is open 24 hours so you can wait inside. We started a list since they take only 20 applications a day however please note the clerks will not honor the list. At 9 am, the door will open and she will start taking names in the order that you're in line. Luckily the group of people I was with honored our list and place in line so we didn't have any that cut or pushed their way to the front. After putting my name down, I left and came back at 10 am. The clerk was very efficient and friendly. She took less than 10 minutes for each applicant. I was fourth and got seen at 10:24 am. I was out of there by 10:30. Be prepared, have your picture, and copies of everything and you will be out of there in no time. I feel bad making fun of Alviso as their post office is a lot nicer than most. The waiting area outside is a garden setting and it was very nice to sit on the bench in the sun. Five stars for this place. read more

If you are looking to get your passport and not gain additional gray hairs, this is the post office you want to go to! This was so painless, I had to do a review! Got there at about 7:30am. Walked into a line that had already started to wrap around the tiny post office. The group of others waiting for passport services had already started an "honor system" list. I added my name and we all agreed that at 9am, the list would be what we honor. When 9am hit, the woman at the window was a bit snarly and immediately said she was not honoring the list. I decided to organize the line according to our honor system list. This worked out perfect. THE OFFICE ONLY PROCESSES 20 APPLICATIONS A DAY. So if you are a family of three, that counts as 3 applications. Needless to say my family of 3 made the list and was advised that the first 10 people would get processed before 1pm, and the last 10 on the list could leave and come back at 1pm. We went back and our passports were processed in less than 20 minutes, for all three! Very easy, just come prepared! read more

I went with my family today to apply for passport. When we went, there was already a huge line formed and there was notice displayed that they accommodate up to 20 people. Including our family on the last, it went up to 27 and still could apply at the end just before 3:00 pm. They were well organized and worked as a team. The documents were verified well ahead of entering and it is overall a very good experience. Also thanks for all their hard work today. read more
