Trevor and his team helped design and build our backyard deck, patio, and landscaping into the backyard of our dreams! We went into the project with some ideas and they helped us shape those into a plan that gave us the entertaining space we wanted while leaving plenty of room for our kids to play. We had the pleasure of working with Trevor, Carrie, and Sarah through Urban Oasis (UO) on a big backyard remodeling project this spring on the Eastside. We started the design process last year with UO, but decided to wait on construction until March 2024 so that we wouldn't have construction in our yard over the summer. We were removing a patio, building a new Trex deck, adding an outdoor kitchen, a structured pitched roof, a hot tub, landscaping, and turning a bay window into a large entry with a bi-fold door. We also are located on a greenbelt that had strict set-backs, so we had to contend with permits and some challenging engineering. With that in mind, I cannot say enough good things about working with this firm. Trevor was hands on and responsive with our questions through the process. Personally, I appreciated UO's aesthetic perspective. While they offered us plenty of choices in design and materials, I loved being able to trust their opinion based on what they have seen work in the past and the particularities of our property. Even when Trevor wasn't on site, UO's carpenters were skilled and knowledgeable. They were always willing to stop and talk us through issues as they arose, or to provide recommendations on design choices. We definitely had some issues come up-it would be hard not to have them with a project of this scale-but UO was consistently willing to work with us to find a solution. For example, a small side window was cracked during the process of moving some lumber into the yard, but UO took full responsibility for the issue and had the window repaired quickly. We really appreciated working with a design and build firm also because it meant 1. They had a network of contractors and referrals in place for us when we needed electricians, gas plumbing, painters, etc, so we didn't have to find additional vendors on our own; 2. They had a strong sense of what materials would work best in our space and could point us to trusted brands; 3. We could adjust design as it was evolving rather than be stuck with an initial blueprint that was hard to imagine until it was put into place. We also felt each member of their team had a strong sense of craftsmanship and wanted to create the best product possible. Because of that, they would re-do things or make adjustments rather than cut corners or find short-cuts. I loved that they seemed to care as much about the outcome as we did! In sum, we had a fantastic experience working with UO. As promised, our deck was ready to go by Memorial Day 2024. They delivered on all of their timelines, worked with us when issues arose, and created something truly spectacular for our family to enjoy for years to come. read more

Poor communication skills between company workers and with clients, from leadership on down, led to many misunderstandings and poor solutions to problems. We spent double what we intended to, breaking 6 figures, and didn't quite get what we asked for...privacy for the hot tub area, a grotto design. Many plants died, both our own mature plants that they moved and those they provided. The lighting system is super problematic, with wiring not protected from rodents, which are a normal pest in Seattle. The trellises aren't level. We've had another company come in and fix much of it. The carpentry and stone work were both very good, but if I had it to do again, I'd look elsewhere. read more

From the first meeting, through design & construction, to final walk through, the people at Urban Oasis were great to work with. We had met with four other companies, who said what they would do with the space, but didn't really listen to our ideas for what we wanted. We chose Urban Oasis because when we expressed ideas, they added the details and enhanced our vision with their expertise and familiarity with methods and materials. We ended up with the design we wanted, and even better than we imagined. During construction, they monitored progress and quality closely and were quickly responsive to any of our questions. Work crews were respectful of neighbors so we could maintain good relationships. They showed up on time every day and worked a full day so there was no mystery about what was happening and whether it would stay on schedule (a problem we had at a previous property with a different company). All the problems with our landscape (weeds, drainage, sloping yard, maintenance difficulty, no path to home entry) have been solved. Urban Oasis listened to our concerns with budget and provided options to keep costs under control. The finished product, a total landscape makeover, is amazing. Every detail was covered and there is nothing we would change. We are completely happy with the result. Totally worth the investment! read more

Pro: The end result is pretty good. Time will tell about craftsmanship. Cons: Trevor and Carrie have big attitude issues, Trevor is quite frankly an @$$, mocking me when I complained about materials clashing saying my design expertise was better than theirs in a sarcastic tone. Carrie pretends to care just enough but doesn't hold up her end as the owner of a design company, ie no design skills (see below). Outsourced home depot help was less than desirable. They were always on break, I don't think I ever saw them work.... Someone did work because the work was eventually done but could be way more efficient. My in laws commented on how much standing around they saw during their 4 week stay with us (and they're French, can't think of a country with more time off). I also noticed that the crew were sloppy with their mortar/sand sets as indicated by the ruined solar lights and iron railings that subsequently needed painting from their spills. Planning is poor. One they forgot to install the lighting and had to redo that work. Two because they forgot they ended up putting the box on the south east corner of the house. That's 150+ feet away from an existing outlet requiring us to have to get more electric work done. Had they done done planning they would have realized there's a plug 10 feet away... Idiots. Two, the materials clashed, big concrete blocks mixed in with light pavers, bluestone and charcoal capstone and copper are very eclectic, I expected to be able to trust a design company especially without seeing materials even after asking 5 times the only thing I saw we're pisa lite pavers pictures and the decking because I had a color choice. I googled bluestone and thought the stairs on each side of my backyard would match but alas the other stairs were big concrete blocks (cheaper materials). I will point out that they ate the cost of black railing on our deck as they originally planned on using cheap white one (again I didn't see this material in advance) but I guess this was even too hideous for them. Three, they didn't check the height of the front steps and by simply placing stones on top we had 10+ inches between the sidewalk and first step. My son and I fell and scraped badly. It wasn't until we fell that I measured the height and realized the work put our front steps out of code. In all fairness they did pour some concrete to fix the height issue but it looks like garbage compared to the rest. I should have known from the beginning that only money matters, they harped on getting the deposit to secure a starting date in Nov-18 in Aug-18 but didn't communicate anything about delays until the end of November well after we thought they'd start only to say they would start in January 2019. I'd also like to point out that we had to ask them why they weren't starting, they didn't proactively communicate. So for $75k+ we got treated like crap, delayed (not just weather), ended up with an average (good is average) product at the end, paid premium for design and again wasn't well thought-out. I'd say we should have paid $40k by any other standard. Also they killed our grass and my 20 year old azelia bushes and left an unlocked port o potty on our front yard (I have video of passerbys using it-eew) put a padlock on it, they cost $5. The workers constantly blocked me in my driveway with the trucks (8am) - not very late by Seattle standards. There's a lot more but you probably get the point, a lot of bad little good. I will shout out Corey, she's nice but we didn't work with her much. Now we know, don't use Urban Oasis unless you like overpaying and being treated poorly. read more

Patio replacement with gas firepit - review is 2 weeks after completion - Workers showed up on time and worked consistently until the job was done; details were important, paying attention to drainage, even moving a large rock that had already been set because it wasn't quite right; there was follow-up to make sure things were to our satisfaction and clean up was good. Price was not cheap, but we got timely, good service and a quality product which has enhance our house's value. good hire. read more

The "Design" or Urban Oasis is great! Carrie not only has a great eye, but listens to your needs, puts together sketches of a few design options which are then used to hone in on the final design in the desired price range. The design services are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. When it comes to "Construction" the service and results are not quite as good - I would recommend you take the designs and get construction services elsewhere. We had two projects done by Urban Oasis and I would use Carrie for the design of another, but then take the drawings and go elsewhere for the construction. read more

I measure the quality of contractors when things go wrong. Last year Urban Oasis re-designed and built our backyard. It was an immediate victory! Quite pleased. But six months later a settling issue occurred causing a visual sag to a sitting wall. We called. There was ZERO discussion about potential shared liability, causes or anything -- just a scheduling for a full fix followed by a team who accomplished a pretty serious re-do. Throughout the consturction of our front yard, they were very clean and orderly, something that was very important since we have young children at home. My wife found them on the web, and had them give us a bid on a large outside renovation. Carrie (sp?) had great ideas, decent pricing, and lots of pics of their work, so we went with them. They put in new front steps, new retaining walls, huckleberry steps, sprinkler system, stairs, handrail, door awning, and an arbor. Everything was done beautifully, on time, and clean. They have their own crew, and they were all nice folks. No subcontractors, no negotiating after the fact about who is responsible for what. Our expectations were exceeded on every part of the job. Attention to detail, beautiful materials, smart ideas to make things really look great (like curving the retaining walls to highlight the huckleberry steps instead of just doing right-angles on everything). The crew really took pride in doing good work. When there was an adjustment that had to be made in stair height that came up after they bid, they took responsibility and did the extra work so it was better than what we had planned. We will use these folks again, and I feel perfectly comfortable recommending them to friends. read more

We started working with Urban Oasis for a large yard renovation project. We first met in September 2016 but did not receive design and quote options until early January 2017. During our 2nd meeting in early October, we gave Carrie our budget. When we received the project design options it was 2.5 to 3 times over our stated budget. Further discussions ensued to see how we could bring the design to even close to our budget requirement. There was not much thought on the part of Urban Oasis to how this could be achieved...just that we could take this out or that out of the plan. In the end we paid a substantial amount for designs that were worthless to us given they were so far over our budget. The good news we since found a recommended firm that were able to work within our budget and have done a great job. read more

Superb company...their terrific landscape architect Carrie Culp listens to your needs and dreams then she incorporates them into the reality in your own backyard. Her designs, the plant selections, the pro planting job they did -- everything was first-rate. They show up, are reasonably priced and completed the work on schedule. They handled the irrigation, drainage issues, and transplanted plants plus added many new ones. As a result, we now live in paradise.
