Float Tank
Katie L.

Urban Float in University Place is so nice, always welcoming, we love just walking in the door; I'm a fan of floating & red light. The float tanks here are the best, Urban Float gets everything right. My other half kinda likes floating, but he's too tall (6'8") to get all the way comfortable even in the biggest tank they have, so he's quickly becoming addicted to their other amazing services. The membership price is great deal for everything we both experience. Highly recommend.

Of the sensory deprivation chambers I've visited in Tacoma, Urban Float offers the most relaxing, most professional, and most comfortable space. The pods are these futuristic capsules that are practically large enough for me to completely outstretch my limbs without touching the sides. The tall, sloped ceilings prevent condensation from dripping into my eyes (Salt water in the eyes ruins the whole experience). There are buttons on either side: one for the interior light, and one for emergencies. Thoughtfulness emanates throughout the experience. The hosts speak quietly and take pleasure in serving. They give you your choice of soothing music, including the choice of when you want it to play. They post signs in the room with suggestions for the optimal float (like what temperature to run the shower, what order to use the soaps, float naked, how to meditate, etc). In the event that you do get the heavily salted water in your eyes, they've even hung a little spray bottle of freshwater inside the pod. They also provide ear plugs to keep the water out, and a little drip bottle of vinegar in the shower to rinse your ears after the float. The only complaints I had were 1. When I first got inside, the pod light shone yellow and made it look like a pool of urine. The color eventually changed but I had a momentary concern for cleanliness. 2. I also had difficulty pressing the button to turn off the light; whether I tapped it or mashed it, I couldn't get it to respond. I ended up sloshing around awkwardly (there's very little friction to press against) until it finally dimmed. The rest of my time there passed without incident. The water in the pod is body temperature and so full of salt that you float effortlessly on the surface. After a few minutes, you forget that you're even in a pool, so it's best to find a comfortable position and be still. As far as I'm concerned, the benefits of sensory deprivation are overhyped. I don't experience hallucinations or visions, I don't have any brilliant epiphanies, and I don't feel any kind of trancendance. What I do experience is peacefulness and comfort, helping to bring a frazzled mind back to equilibrium. Though your mileage may vary, this benefit alone is worth the visit. Float chambers are a unique experience that should be tried at least once, especially for those with stressful lives, and Urban Float is a great place to do it.

Urban Float @ University Place (from my float yesterday) ~ Pod is very large (you can keep it open or closed (I suggest closed for maximum temp, sensory deprivation and meditative state), you can choose to float in the dark or with lights and when you're finished tou have access to a shower (bathwash, shampoo, conditioner supplied for you) and warm towels use! Great opportunity to take advantage of for sure (I have 2 more sessions left) The staff are really helpful and very informative during your introduction. You should try it!

I'm interested in doing this, because I live in stress mode and have read the reviews. How therapeutic is this, if you're a sinker with PTSD?

Hi Tonya, first let me say everyone floats in our tanks, 1000lbs of Epsom salt ensures it. Plus the water is only 10 inches deep. Regarding being therapeutic, research shows that in the environment of a float tank, the amygdala essentially goes to…

How long is each floating session? I can't find that info on the website

But by the end of my first session, I got there. Maybe being a lifelong swimmer helped, but the buoyancy is incredible. Eventually, the sensory deprivation lets you escape into this place where your thoughts stop following you and you can simply just be. Kayla was wonderful and explained everything clearly. I also highly recommend reading the FAQs beforehand - it takes away the uncertainty so you can just relax and experience it. The space is clean, convenient, and thoughtfully set up, with everything you need provided. An hour sounds like a long time until the music comes on telling you it's over. At that point, I completely understood why babies are upset about leaving the womb. I was not ready to get out. Everyone should try this at least once. It would also make a great gift for a partner, employee, or anyone who could use an hour to disconnect, decompress, and reset. I'll absolutely be back.

The facility feels very new and clean and the staff are super helpful. Even before booking my first appointment , the text chat was super responsive in answering my questions. Online scheduling is also a huge plus and very easy. The sauna is infrared, which is disclosed and does fine even if not my preference and it's a little difficult not to get water everywhere with the way the shower and tub are set up. Those would be my nitpicky complaints and overall, it's very well worth it especially since you can have a second person for only $20 and the time slot isn't shared/community. They also seem to have deals throughout the year, so that makes it even better. Overall, pleased with this place and can definitely see coming back again when I'm in the area!

Deep tissue massages are not for the faint of heart . They are not for those looking to go to sleep during the massage. She was firm and targeted spending most time on the areas that needed it most. She started on my legs and feet and then worked her way up. I was most impressed with the owner's knowledge and experience. She is an expert in Chinese massage and understands and is trained on the benefits of Chinese medicine. As a result she understands the connection of massage and other areas of your body. This is different than other local massage places. This is a high quality massage that addresses your whole body. Suffice it to say, that I left feeling so much better than when I entered. I've already made an appointment to go back.

I turned off the music I requested after 5 minutes and enjoyed the silence but kept the starry lights and bluish light on for comfort. I enjoyed the ear plugs to avoid water and salt in the ears. I was never rushed at the end of my session. Loud music plays in the pod when the session is over to alert you to exit and shower. Everything was clean and welcoming. Royce was helpful explaining and answering all questions about the experience before the session. His chill vibes and calm demeanor was appreciated. After my session I enjoyed using the main mirrors to apply my lip gloss and then I made my way over to the complimentary tea station and enjoyed a mint tea on the lobby couches before leaving. I felt relaxed for the rest of the day and the next. I also had amazing sleep that night. The session was a great way to de stress and focus on me. Would recommend and would return. It popped up for me again while I was scrolling on Groupon, so I decided to get the two float package for both my partner and I and for my parents. I'm so glad I finally tried it out! I don't agree with some of the comments about the location, I found it to be very cozy and relaxing. For a first time experience, and as someone who really struggles with going to unfamiliar places, I found it to be perfect and not overwhelming. When I first arrived, the owner was not in the spa area but some paperwork to fill out was left on the desk. I actually really loved that because it gave me some time to settle into the environment and process everything before having to interact with anyone, which is huge for me. As a person with both Autism and ADHD (and I highly demanding job), I really struggle with overstimulation, nervous system dysregulation, adrenaline fatigue, and periods of severe burnout. My muscles are always very tense, about halfway through my body became very relaxed and I spent about 15 minutes just stretching and felt an incredible relief of tension like I've never experienced. I actually cried at one point because I didn't know it was possible for me to be able to relax like that. The sensory deprivation and having the opportunity to relax my body for the first time in a very long time is exactly what I needed before returning to work at the end of Winter break. Even as a first time float, I had such a great experience and came out feeling much more regulated and calm. I had really been struggling mentally and physically the last couple of months due to work, I feel like this really helped with regulating my nervous system. I'm going to try out the once a week for a month package in hopes that it will help with avoiding that level of burnout!

Each float tank is in a clean, private, lockable room with a shower and towels and ear plugs - everything you need. The float tank experience itself is pretty cool - after showering you get in the tank, which is about ten inches of water with a whole bunch of epsom salt in it. The water and the air are the same temperature as the human body so it's a bit hard to distinguish between you and the environment after a bit. You can close the tank and turn off the light for a complete sensory deprivation experience, or try any combo to your comfort level.
