If you are sensitive to the smell of mildew or urine, choose an alternative float studio. Lucky for my friend and I, we were able to compare Rubicon to Urban Float. Urban Float smelled clean! No mildew or urine smells anywhere there! The Texan did have the nerve to bad mouth Urban Float, stating that Rubicon's tanks were bigger and better. Size is not everything! If you have nothing to compare your experience at Rubicon to, you might be misled by the Texan at the front desk. He might convince you that it is clean even though the tank is beyond slimy and reeks.The smell in the room where the tank is, smells like mildew, and inside the tank literally smells like urine. I don't know about you, but I had a difficult time clearing my head as I knew in my gut something was not right. I don't like the idea of paying $90 to float in pee. Gross! My friend and I both got out early and scrubbed the best we could in the cold mist shower. It was impossible to rinse properly and uncomfortable that it was only cold water not even warm. After the float, cleaning off in a hot shower would have been helpful especially feeling baptized in urine. When I got to the lobby, my friend was already discussing the smell with the Texan. He asked me how the float was, and I told him it smelled like urine and hindered my relaxation. He acted so surprised and as if he had never heard this news before. He did not offer a refund or even a discount. Instead, he watched us walk out the door. We walked away and both agreed we would never return there again. Such a disappointment! read more

Change in staff has meant big degradation in service. I joined Float Rubicon in early 2018. I had just had open heart surgery (I'm as shocked as you are ... I taught yoga for 12 years, man!) and was looking for something that would soothe body and soul. The main check-in guy was a tell fellow from Texas. I was worried about claustrophobia and mentioned this worry about 617 times in the first ten mintues of his introduction. He had great tips on how to manage claustrophobia and, he was right! Baby steps and about three floats in a barely gave it a second thought. The online booking is a good point, but you can't book w/in 2 hours of a float. For most of 2018, if it was a lovely sunny day, I'd stop in and ask Texan if there were any open pods. And always, yes, he'd smile and welcome me and show me to the room. A few weeks ago, it was a sunny day and I phoned and no one answered and I was in the 'hood, so I bopped in to see if there were any open pods, just like in the good old days. Bearded receptionist dude sort of flipped out and talked about online booking, etc., and the importance of a 30 minute filtration system and a visit from the department of health services. I told him I'm be happy to wait. On the way back to my pod (six pods and only one was listed as occupied), Bearded Dude informs me that I can't just pop in willynilly and that if I'm going to be late, I have to phone and speak with someone first (which seems so, like, 1987) and that I need to remember to be quiet as the pods are full with people trying to find peace and quiet, etc. It almost felt like he was a friend and I had had a fight with him the night before and he was still mad. Admittedly, the lecture sort of set the float off kilter. I mean, I pay a sitter goodly money to make a little time for myself and if I wanted to be yelled at for no good reason, I'd call my mother. After my float, I thanked him for keeping me informed and he seemed nice and said he was truly sorry, that he didn't mean to come across 'that way' and to not worry about being late, that only if it was over 20 minutes, then call. Otherwise, come on by! So I booked my float for noon. And, natch, traffic north was sort of chunky and I arrived at the studio at 12:12. And I say "Hi, I'm Tracey, I'm here for my noon float." Bearded Dude glowers. "I know. And you are LATE." Um, well this is awkward. "Okay, well, I'm here now ... " (or some such sentence to try to smooth his ruffled feathers. because that's what I love about my mom's day off, is smoothing someone else's mental problems) Bearded Dude's jaw clenches. "AND YOU ARE LATE." No extra information, like please come back at 2pm or, sure, traffic can be tricky, let me get your pod ready ... just misdirected rage at a twin mom with a heart problem trying to catch a break. We all, as humans, have value on this planet. If expect to be treated with respect at a place where you give money, look elsewhere. read more

My experiment was uncomfortable on many levels. I have enjoyed floating at Float Seattle in Bellevue many times so I had high expectations. In contrast, Rubicon smelled gross and felt dirty. There was a heavy odor, like axe body spray and mildew. The tank is made of black material with ugly white plumbing jutting into the tub, and it had visible mineral buildup on all surfaces like it doesn't get scrubbed regularly. Despite some anxious thoughts about whether one could catch a disease from floating in a dirty tank water, I forced myself to stay the course and get in and close the lid. The circular float tank was too large for me, and my body rotated quite a bit and quickly, to the point where I felt lost in it and disoriented. and the door was difficult to open from the inside--no handle. It was the first time ever in my 3 years of positive float experiences, that I felt panicked when the air got stuffy and hot inside and I could not find the exit door. And once I found it, it took all my force to bust it open because there is no inner handle and it has a heavy pressured seal. Once I finally escaped the pod to get some air, I did not feel like going back in. Usually my favorite part of floating is the sensory deprivation of total darkness but this time I chose to turn a light on after having initially been trapped. I noticed there was a small tablet propped up in the room with the camera lens pointed towards the bench, shower and entrance to the room. If sessions were being recorded, the device was at a perfect angle to capture people in a state of undress on their way into the shower and tank and on their way out. This also caused me anxiety and it seemed inappropriate and unnecessary to have a video recording device (whether or not it was being used in that capacity) in the room. After I got back in the tank with the door propped open for ventilation, I was just counting down the minutes till it would be over and I could leave. After all I'd paid for 90 minutes so it would be a waste not to give it a shot, right? Every breath I took was punishingly noxious from the strong cologne scent mixed with musty "boys' dorm bathroom" smells. I decided after 20 minutes I could take no more. I emerged from the muggy murky water and went back to the shower and tried to clean the after-shave scent off of me, but the body wash provided had another variety of cheap smelling overly strong chemical-laden odor. When I grabbed the towel to dry off my hair and body, it smelled mildewed with a whole other mix of yucky odors and the terry robe had its own funky odor too. Now so smelled like these items. I was embarrassed to go into the grocery store after I left because of how many strong odors I was carrying. The man at Rubicon's front desk was unfazed when I told him why I was leaving early. No followup questions for me, or explanations for why the room and all its contents would be smelling so bad, or any validation of the poor user experience that particular style of float tank presents to some people. I was surprised because this place had an overall high review rating, but now that I am reading the individual reviews one by one, I see there are a few one and two stars. I wish I had saved my money and time so paying it forward to prevent anyone else from wasting their resources. I will be returning to Float Seattle! read more

I had never been in an isolation tank. I had seen the movie Altered States in the 1980s and, well, it didn't leave a positive impression. But a friend convinced me to try it. The nice guy at Rubicon escorted me to the room with the tank, gave me some quick, clear instructions, and left me to enjoy my float. The room was white, clean, spa-like in nature. There was a shower in-room so you could wash the very salty water off after the session. SO relaxing. Very positive experience at Rubicon. Kudos. read more

I have tried a few other floatation studios around, but this one is the best! they are the only ones around who offer 90 min sessions as opposed to 60 min. their rooms are always top shape and sparkling clean. Their Staff is always nice and goes far and beyond to accommodate my every need. They offer several options for music during session and have different options for the head pillow (which i especially like because sometimes my tight neck prefers pool noodle pillow and sometimes the round one and sometimes non at all!). All in all, i am a long standing member and hope to stay much longer! read more

The staff is nice, but the float experience is less than ideal. The amenities are not very good quality: -The shower is set to a light mist and you are not able to adjust- it is VERY cold before and after your float. -The shampoo dispenser fell off the wall when I used it- although I barely touch it. -The shower mat is hard and hurt my feet terribly. -The alcohol for your ears is not in a dropper, so you cannot easily use it. -This location told me they do not give you the option to have the music on the entire float (which is available at most other float studios)- they only have "one setting" as I was told by the front desk. Overall, I am disappointed I purchased the 3 float package as I don't even want to return, but I have 2 more floats I have to use in the next few months. There are MUCH better float places out there! I went in trying to have an open mind about this place. After all, I'd already been to Urban Float and had such an enjoyable experience, and the photos and descriptions of this place made it seem like it wouldn't compare. I came away from Rubicon deciding the best way to describe this place was Utilitarian (functional but no frills). I'm unsure if that was the owners goal, set up an affordable place for people to soak, while sticking to the basics. There is a simple desk when you walk in, maned by a friendly gentleman in his 20's. He walked me back and gave me the instructions, but the way he was describing things I somehow got a little lost, and remember, this isn't my first float. I think he said the music will play for 10 minutes to start and then at the end to bring you out. I did my pre soak wash with the bizarre shower head that did not make showering all that relaxing to start the whole process (plus the pre soak soap appeared to be out because nothing was coming out, so I used the after soak soap). Back to that relaxing music you're supposed to hear. I saw the guy push buttons on an iPad but I could barely hear it in the room. If there were speakers in the tank I have no idea where they were cause I heard nothing. I could go on and on about here's what I enjoyed at Urban that was lacking at Rubicon but what boiled down to being the worst part was the room smelled musty, as did the tub. I was also surprised how warm they had the room and there was salt all along the outside edge of the tub and crusted on various surfaces. read more

I heard about floating and wanted to experience it myself. I hear its great for your mental and physical well-being. I went yesterday and loved it! The studio: easy to find, there was free parking up to 2 hours, very clean facility. The staff: welcoming and helpful before and after. we talked about what I experienced and what the benefits are. The room: there is a shower with shampoo/body wash, bench and place to put your belongings. They provided individual packets of ear plugs, make up remover, ointment (for rash or scratches), lotion. Due to covid bring your own towels and water to drink post float. Experience: You shower before and after. You open the dome, get in and you float! It was very spacious. There is a small floating light if you don't want pitch black. I closed my eyes and relaxed. I think I was in there for 75 minutes instead of full 90. Last night was the best sleep I've had in awhile. I'll be back! read more

Rubicon float has the best float tanks in the Seattle area. I have tried the other places in Seattle, and the tanks are smaller with shorter timed floats. I appreciate that you can do a 90 minute float for an affordable price here. The 90 vs. 60 minutes makes all the difference for me with floating. It really helps sink into your meditation more deeply, especially when I am having a block meditating normally. I would totally try it out if you are on the fence! read more

This is an overdue review, but nearly 1.5 months later, and I'm still thinking about how great my experience was at Rubicon! I was nervous, as this was my first time, but Robert patiently explained the process and the science behind the experience. I was provided a tour of the facility, and Robert explained how everything worked, and what I should do to make the most of my time in the chamber. I will say that I had difficulty "turning my brain off" this first time, but I was assured by Robert and by my friends that have done this before that that is common for a newbie. Reliving the first time I floated in 2018 I have been using a Float Tank for the last week. I experienced my first float on Sunday and it was a life changing experience. My body has never been so calm. If you know me I don't stop moving unless I'm in my depressive point in the year. At one point I couldn't feel my limbs but especially my legs and feet. They're the main source of my pain. It is a type of calm I've never been able to duplicate. Not massages, therapy, swimming, exercising nothing. My mind has allowed me to fall asleep everytime. Float away to a place in my brain where I keep all my pain and life I hide away. I've woken up crying, laughing, saying no, as well as calmly waking up to weird noises. I've now floated 5 times and mentally it's been the best week in a very very long time. I want to sleep it's not something my body is making me do. I want to do things. I want to be creative at work. I want to do life daily. I reccomend floating for anyone. I didn't think I could do it. But no sounds, lights or visual stimulation has been the best for me. read more

I always wanted to a sensory deprivation tank; it was largely an enigma, but not any longer. I did a Groupon with the opportunity to go for a week. The staff at Rubicon were truly amazing! After doing a preliminary orientation on Day 1, I enjoyed 5 "floats" during my weeklong experience. Each float tank is contained within it's own spacious private room with shower. All the essentials are provided (towel and a washcloth) and some additional perks and amenities. I read and heard some people's concerns over being claustrophobic by being contained in a small "coffin-like" chamber in the darkness. To the contrary, the tanks were spacious with hoods that could left open if you chose to do so; however I left it open as I was seeking a true sensory deprivation experience. The room lights dim after about 10 minutes and once you enter the tank, music quietly plays for a similar amount of time until you are left in complete silence. It was so quiet I was left with only the sound of heartbeat... Though the water depth of tank is only about 10 inches, there's no danger of sinking or your head falling below the surface. Just lay back, allow you body to completely and fully relax and you'll find yourself entering into a twilight state if not falling asleep altogether. Being a person who is constantly working, thinking and on the move, my five-90 minute sessions were a refreshing oasis that I began to look forward to each day. It's truly an amazingly relaxing experience! There are a wide variety of float memberships should one determine to make this a regular habit. Will I go back? You bet! My experiences at Rubicon Float Studio have been nothing short of excellent, and have exceeded my expectations in virtually every respect. As a first-time floater I found the variety of online materials accessible at Rubicon's website (floatrubicon.com) quite helpful, but it was my unrushed and informative one-on-one consultation with Rubicon's manager Robert Barr that enabled me to feel fully comfortable as I embarked on this new experience. Treatment rooms are spacious and well-appointed with a variety of small but thoughtful conveniences--evidence that Robert and his staff have carefully considered customer service in an end-to-end fashion. A beautifully unobtrusive soundtrack piped directly into each tank gently eased me into a fully-relaxed state before ultimately fading to beautiful silence. Temperature control, both ambient and within each tank, is excellent and left me feeling supported in a secure womb-like environment. Other high-end features included a continuous but gentle supply of fresh air within each tank and exceptional attention to sound isolation via high-tech flooring/walls and room ventilation systems. Not once during any of my (thus-far) three floats did any extraneous sound of any kind enter the tank--this in spite of other people touring and utilizing the center at the time. After completing my second float, I was amazed to learn that a gas-powered leaf blower had been operated immediately outside the center by Juanita Village's groundskeeping staff. All the while, I sensed absolutely nothing except the sound of my own slow heartbeat and calmed breathing. The ability to retain ambient room lighting at a low level (or if desired, even via blue LED lighting within each tank) left me feeling fully in-control of the degree of isolation achieved. By my third float, I was comfortable relaxing in a completely dark environment. The degree of relaxation I achieved was greater than I typically experience from a high-quality massage costing considerably more than my membership-priced float. The subtle yet fresh scent that prevails through the center, as well as installed systems to achieve thorough filtration and disinfection of water within each tank between client uses, left me feeling clean and comfortable both during and after each of my visits. As much as I enjoyed the float time itself, the most profound impacts I experienced came in the hours and even days following. The calming influence (which I would describe as feeling more "centered" than sedated) was long lasting. On one occasion, I arrived in a sleep-deprived state yet found myself feeling amazingly refreshed and rejuvenated by my experience. I have continually been amazed by how quickly each 90-minute session passes. While I've never actually fallen asleep, the sense of being weightless and effortlessly suspended quickly brought me to a deep state of relaxation perhaps akin to dozing on a hammock gently rocking in a perfectly-balmy evening tropical breeze. At times during my floats, I have had an amazing sense of gentle, soaring flight or drifting along in the slowest of streams. I understand that such experiences are individual, as demonstrated by the fact that no two of my floats have felt exactly the same. But in each case, after a relaxing post-float rinse in the well-designed shower found within each treatment room, I emerged refreshed.
