I've been a long time fan of tart fruit beers and we finally had an opportunity to visit this taproom. It's located in the basement of an old church, and has a brightly painted wall near the entrance. Inside is mostly wood with old confessionals in the corner. The women's bathroom had a ton of stalls and was stocked, which I always appreciate. When you first walk in there is a "store" area to the right with beer to take and merchandise. The bar is towards the back and has a wall with 12-15 on tap beers. I ended up ordering two flights of beer since I wanted to try everything. I lean towards a very tart and crisp beer. My all time OG favorite is the Spyglass, which is a lemon and lime golden sour ale. It wasn't on tap but available for purchase in a mixed pack. I tried a bunch Peer, Kilobyte, Gadget, Fire Iron, Bushel, Teak, Pickle, Dyne and more. Loved them all, some more than others. I can't wait to go back to load up. My friend and I wanted something that wasn't sour. A lager was recommended by the bartender. I thought it tasted like sushi in a blender. It was called Jack. I had 3 sips, and my friend had maybe 6. Together we had MAYBE half a beer. We brought them back and ordered something else. We asked if the disgusting ones would be taken off, and the bartender was suddenly unfriendly and said, "We can take off one, you both had half." I can't believe I haven't written a review for UA yet! This is my favorite local brewery in Cincy (and maybe my favorite brewery ever?) How cool is it that this is located in an old church?!? You can always count on Urban Artifact for fun flavors -- and I'd argue that all of their unique offerings are delicious!! I've had nitro infused beers and beers with random herbs and spices elsewhere ... but the execution isn't always on point. Whereas with UA - I've never met a brew I didn't enjoy. During our most recent visit, we tried their elusive Pickle Beer. This special brew is only offered during the month of December -- and it's one we will definitely be stocking up on. It's a savory, sour beer without being overwhelming -- and you can really pick up on the dill. Another fun perk of visiting the taproom is their game selection! My husband and I love a good board game night -- and they have something for any size group to enjoy. We stuck with Battleship, which we've decreed to be the perfect two player game. Loved this brewery just a bit outside of the city. The bartender was so friendly and helpful when finding a beer we liked. I love sours, which is what they specialize in. Tried Urban Artifact for the first time and 10/10. They have such a selection of very different flavors and combinations so there is always something new to try. It is also located inside an old church, which is very cool. I especially love their outside area so you can really take in the unique location. They also have a firepit for those colder nights as well as games to play while you are drinking. So excited to see what they have to offer the next time I am in Cinci. Thank god places like this exist! Converted church into brewery? Yes please! And here I thought I would never go to church again lol. Beers are tart which is not my thing but they do sell other bottle beers for people like me. I was here for an women's day event selling my macrame art and it went so well! Vendors and visitors all had smiles on their faces. Maybe it's cuz we can day drink?! My favorite part is the smell of the church especially when they have a bonfire going in the back yard and the smell comes into the inside. Heaven! Always like issuing five star reviews to breweries that generate wonderful craft beer drinking experiences. I would have love to have tried more than one beer with Urban Artifact but opportunity allowed one. And the choice made in the one was a good one! We got the Kaleidoscope beer which has Pineapple and guava features to it. It also had an herbal aspect to it and I do so love herbal beers and feel like I don't get them enough. Kaleidoscope was a good beer to relax with and if the opportunity ever does present itself again I'd love to try more of their other beers! read more

I met my cousin for a beer so we can catch up and decided to try a new brewery. The outside is beautiful. It's an old church and the windows are magnificent. The inside was nothing exciting very dark but they were set up for social distancing. As far as the beer I had to try the pickle beer and I know have a new favorite. We had a blast hanging out inside of Urban Artifact Brewery with our dog. They have multiple seating options for large to small groups. They do not offer food but sometimes offer a food truck. They have lots of board games in their brewery so plan on staying for a while to have some fun and drink some amazing beers. They have a variety of beers to choose from. They are known for their fruity, sour and tart beers (aka Fruit Tart). Gotta check out their delicious beers, fun games and beautiful venue. This brewery is nestled in the basement of the historic St. Patrick's Catholic Church. They also offer live shows on their Radio Artifact Soundstage. A must place to go with your dog! read more

I was meeting a big group of friends at UA for a reunion. We parked a block away on the street because I didn't know the parking situation, it ended up being fine. I knew it was in an old renovated church, but I didn't realize how big or beautiful this building would be! The patio off to the side was an added benefit to be able to sit outside at picnic tables. There weren't any servers outside, so you got your drinks directly from the bar. They had merch inside and plenty of sour drink choices. They do not have food, and I don't know their policy of bringing outside food. I am giving 3/5 stars because they are famous for sour beers, and they only have tart and sour beers/seltzers available, which is good for the niche of people who like sours. I am not one of those people. I asked the bartender for suggestions, tried a few, and was unsuccessful. I decided on mixing two beers together to try to bet a more Pale Ale or IPA flavor, it was drinkable, but the bartender was not patient or very happy that I decided to go to a sour beer bar and don't like sour beers. read more

The sheer amount of breweries in Cincinnati has turned me into a beer lover! And Urban Artifact is a MUST TRY in Cincy. Firstly, the location (in the heart of Northside) is so convenient. It's appropriately busy, not always packed. There's plenty parking in front, and next to the brewery. The church building is gorgeous. The taproom is a good size, and there are board games to borrow and play. They have some great bands that perform almost every evening. The patio is beautiful. The staff is welcoming and friendly. And they have *breaking news* GREAT BEER! Even though they specialize in sour/tart/ale kinda beers, there's something for everyone here. I got the Spyglass (lime tart) and my friend got Finn. We liked it both. For a $6 a glass, the prices were typical. You can get a six pack cans for $10 I think. There's food now, but I haven't tried it yet. read more

If you like to pucker up with sour ales or go wild on some wild ales, Urban Artifact is a destination for you! Great and unique brews in a unique setting and all of it truly enjoyable. The place itself is in an old church repurposed as a brewery. Fitting since at one time, hundreds of years ago, churches in Europe, especially in Germany and Belgium, churches actually brewed and controlled beer. (Seriously, look it up!) They always have great stuff on tap, including some guest taps and bottles, and daily special including dunking a popsicle into one of their brews (Saturdays). They also have a stage for live music and shows. So if you find yourself in beautiful Northside, you owe it to yourself to check this gem out, especially if you like it sour or wild. Usually, in presence of such inspiring architecture and the joy of a new experience, I only have good things to say. However, Urban Artifact really underwhelmed me. Yes, the building is absolutely amazing: it's in the former St. Pius Catholic Church and the structure is breathtaking. Sadly, the experience in reality was uninspired. Having done no research beforehand, I met a friend here (who unbeknownst to me hates sour beers) to find that, of course, Urban Artifact only brews sour beers. They have a unique niche in the market and they're only brewing "tart and wild" beers: which he won't drink for preference and I can't drink for dietary reasons. So, we both ended up drinking something that was not even made there. Add to this that we were both hungry, and while knowing they contracted for pizza/food with Wildfire next door, the long bar wait and general crowdedness of the place just didn't seem worth it. I knew that the entertainment space upstairs (in the main worship hall) was restricted and not open to the public yet. Still it was a disappointment that the only accessible part of the bar was in the church basement. Urban Artifact has a ton of potential to be a hybrid of Taft Ale House & Transept OTR: if they grow and add some new menu offerings. Until then, I am a bit sour. read more

This was the fourth stop on my Northside Pubcrawl that I attended. I love the atmosphere of this bar being in an old church. The location is a bit off the main drag as the other bars I went to during this crawl (6 locations total). A couple in my group ordered pizza and other food items that we shared. The pepperoni pizza was SOOO GOOD! Definitely recommend! The reason I docked a star was due to the live music in a room in the back of the bar. A couple of us from the crawl went back to check it out when the music started playing. There were not any signs or anyone at the door, so we kind of meandered our way in. We were listening to a song, standing near the back, when the performer stopped mid-song to tell us to pay $20 in the back. We were a bit shocked, as there were literally only 5 audience members not counting the three of us. We backed out and left. We were unaware that it was a paid event as there were no signs. We did warn others in the crawl to not go back there - though some missed our warning and also got told to pay after entering. This place does have an outdoor space that was very large. Half of my group spent time outside and the others inside. Overall, the food here was great. I wish they had signs warning about the music event costing extra. read more

Parking was a little difficult but fine if you're okay with walking. The people inside were very nice but there were some people standing on the side of the building screaming at each other when we walked up which made me nervous for what was inside but was very pleasantly surprised, will be returning. read more

The Cincinnati brewery who's mantra is wild culture brewing the city's premiere sour beers. Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church repurposed into a cool urban brewery very big on reusing materials on hand and building into the Northside neighborhood. All of the beers use fruit, vegetables, seasonings in season from regional producers. Found out during the brewery tour their beers don't really have a name until they're ready and are made in small batches when they're gone they're gone, except for Keypunch their gose German style beer with key limes available year round & canned. The high ceilings lit by uplighting provide the perfect backdrop to live music and an incredible space to drink the delicious sour beers of Urban Artifact. Speaking of which, if you are a lover of sour beers, Urban Artifact is a must-visit in Cincy. The staff is friendly and the weeknights are filled with live music. Whether you're craving a pickle beer (yes, that's a thing), or just want to enjoy the Northside-vibes, Urban Artifact is a great spot to relax with a cold one. The outdoor patio area is lackluster, but gets the job done and has seating for a nice day. All in all, it doesn't get much better than Urban Artifact for me (the Pinwheel beer is one of my favorites, though I've never had one of theirs I don't like!) read more

I know a am in the minority in my review. As such, I will start with the positive. I have attended an event in the event space, and wanted to wait until I tried the brewery space before writing a review. When it comes to the upstairs event space, I really like it. There are high ceilings. It is intimate enough to not seem overwhelming, yet large enough for a decent sized crowd. Strings of lights give the room a romantic feel. Creating an event space and brewery is a wonderful use of the old church.. The brewery is where Urban Artifact looses me. For my taste, the beer is too sour. We tried a flight plus one taster. I could not stand more than a couple sips of each. With the exception of one, my husband felt the same. Upon leaving, there was more beer left in the glasses than what we consumed. The music near the stage was loud. I could not imagine being near the stage with live music playing. We would have left much sooner, but we had to wait for our pizza from Wildfire. My first visit here was for a wedding; the ceremony and reception were held in the beautiful cathedral space, while in between the events we had to wait in the brewery itself. I have always heard good things about this place but didn't know what to expect. Be prepared: most of their brews are sours and fruit beers. If you like darker, more traditional beers, I would come in with an open mind. As for the space itself, it's actually very cool. The main seating space is pretty small but it's got lots of hi-tops as well as large booths for groups. In the back there's a section for live music, which I believe they have almost every night of the week. There's also a huge shelf of board games, which I love. We were in the area on a Sunday and decided to stop in. Being from Louisville, I'm used to church bars with 3rd Turn and Holy Grale. This church bar is different in that it's huge! It's huge and it has a stage! Whaaaa! As soon as I noticed the stage I thought to myself how awesome it'd be to see a show there. I immediately check their site when I arrived home and of course... there's a show later this month(Helado Negro) that might need my attention! They specialize in sours. I like sour beers, but none of them that I tried here really stood out to me. The stars come from everything else about the place. I ordered a flight... I get to try 4 beers for $8? Wow! The beer: -- Finn - Pale ale at 5.3 abv. I'm not a huge fan of pale ales, but this beer was featured in GQ magazine(Not that mags are that reputable in today's information environment) so I thought I should at least try it. It was good. It didn't strike me as a pale ale. -- Chariot - Cherry Gose at 4.7 abv. As far as taste goes, this was at the top of the list in my flight. Order this one for sure. -- Key Punch - Key Lime Gose at 4.7 abv. I was excited for this one because Key Lime is my favorite pie! Unfortunately this beer missed with me. It tasted more like dish detergent. Unfortunate. -- Hippodrome - Double IPA at 8.7 abv. I love IPAs. I liked this one. Even if you don't like IPAs, you're safe to order this one as it isn't as bitter as I expected it to be. The space is really cool. The basement is where the bar is. The stage is also down there along with plenty of sitting space and board games to play. The bartender was a nice guy. It wasn't too busy during our visit. We were there mid-afternoon so the sun was out and disturbing our eyeballs. My only criticism of the place is the outside area. I liked it, but it could use a shade tree for those day drinking moments when the sun just won't go away. I bet this place is a hot spot at night. I think they're doing well as they have their first canned product on the way for release in December. I also would like to see the upstairs. I think it is closed off. My best guess would be that the stills and other brewing supplies are there. I think they use part of it as an event space too. I totally see another cash flow opportunity in giving people small tours. Obviously it wouldn't be anything extensive, but the church was built in 1876... it'd be cool to see!
