I arrived at 2:30pm and was told the owner who is the only one who can operate the register went to pick his kids up for school but that he'd be right back. I was fine with waiting as I was looking forward to this pizza place (I left a great review in Dec 2013). After waiting for 10 minutes I asked the guy if I could just leave cash for the pizza as I only wanted 2 slices of cheese pizza. He said he doesn't have any cheese pizza and only the owner knows how to make it. After waiting another 10 minutes (it's now 2:50) the owner shows up and asks what I want. No apology for being late or thanking me for waiting. I ask for "two slices of cheese pizza" and he says "how about pepperoni? I don't have any cheese." I then asked how long it takes to make cheese pizza and he immediately responded with "we don't make cheese pizza by the slice after 3pm" --- mind you it's still 2:50 but that's besides the point. I didn't even get into it. I told him I'd take the two slices of pepperoni that had been waiting for me for the last 20 minutes! The pizza tasted like it looked- old and microwaved. I'm so disappointed as I used to like this place but I am a lost customer and will be sharing this experience with my co-workers whom I keep telling yo come here... But they have the right idea.... My wife and I visit the Oxnard/Ventura/Channel Islands area once a year. When we are craving some pie, we usually just go to Toppers. This time, I looked on Yelp before we went to munch on some Italian pie. -nom nom nom-. A Yelp reviewer had this place in his top 10, so we decided to give it a try. Suffice to say, it was delicious! Very liberal toppings, a freshness to the cheese that I have not had in a very long time, and scrumptious dough made for one very delectable pie! I tried the following pizzas: The Artichoke Special: Living close to the artichoke capital of the world, I'll taste any pizza I can get my hands on with artichokes, and Uptown did a great job. Mozzarella, ham, sausage, artichokes, and tomatoes. You can't go wrong. Hawaiian BBQ pizza: Turkey Ham, BBQ chicken, and pineapple. Yum. Shrimp Lovers: Shrimp on the pizza? I'm allergic but I'll try anything once (even if I end up looking like Nutty Professor afterwards). The shrimp was cooked perfectly, not too chewy. It also had mushrooms and chopped garlic in a creamy white sauce. Nice touch. My favorite had to be the Roasted Garlic Chicken: Roasted Chicken (not too dry, but just the perfect toasted moistness), garlic, mushrooms, and roma potatoes. I've tried the California veggie, the garlic veggie, and the veggie pesto -- all sooo delicious! Usually pizza places just have one veggie pizza that gets boring sometimes. Uptown pizza has so many amazing options it's hard for me to say which is my favorite, but nonetheless I am grateful to have a great pizza spot so close to home. Having just gobbled four slices, I feel compelled to write a review while my plate is still empty. The owner of this restaurant is clearly a talented individual: he knows pizza. As well, he's creative and thoughtful about his crust and its details (toasted sesame seeds? Brilliant!) We ordered the Artichoke Special and the Spinach and Feta. Both are excellent. Though we ate our first slightly cooked slices right out of the box when we got home, the remainder will be equally excellent reheated or straight from the fridge. It was ok and though I generally like salty foods, this was beyond salty even for me. The garlic was so over powering, its all I could taste afterwards. Another dissatisfaction was the use of chicken strips that you can get at the grocery store w/the faux grill lines. These were huge pieces, not even cut down.
