World class gyros, excellent service, and some of the best pizza in the Midwest. J&G is a long-standing Sylvania institution that you simply must visit if in the Toledo area. When I lived in the area, it would get super packed since people love this place to death. The pizza and gyros were so good, and when it comes to gyros, there is an incredible amount of stiff competition around Toledo. The best gyros I've had in my life have all been in the Toledo area, and J&G is right at the top. It's an awesome spot that hasn't changed in years. The decor is very old school neighborhood pizza joint (probably looked exactly this way in the 70's), which only adds to the ambience. Love it. Not fancy but great local staple for Sylvania. Pizza is delicious. Flat thin style crusts but in squares if you've never had. The Gyros are fabulous. I've never had a bad meal. Enjoy glass of wine while waiting in the small but part of atmosphere entrance while waiting. Staff could be more friendly but I've learned to embrace :) read more

i've been eating at J & G (my family just calls it JG's) for 40 years, since before i can remember, and to this day it remains one of my favorite places in the universe. very, very little has changed in that time - same faded, fuzzy wallpaper, same funky lamps and wood paneling. same gyro spits and coolers full of beers (although i hear that's changing!). so, i don't believe in this whole "best pizza in ___" thing - there are so many different styles of pizza pie that's it's not fair to rank it that way. Sylvania/Toledo has great examples of greek-style, detroit-style, NY-style, and more. the pizza at J & G's is amazing, and really very consistent in all the years my family and i have been going there. crispy, bubbly crust, very thin. great balance of toppings, sauce, and cheese. you'll either love it, or it's not your thing. don't be a jerk and give this beloved and locally-owned institution one-star just because you don't care for thin-crust pizza! why not try something else? everything else i've had here is pretty great. the greek salad is a large portion and i love the giant slab of feta. the lamb kabobs (on those rare occasions when i can get away from ordering pizza) have been excellent; and with fries and garlic toast? oh man. the spinach pie is also quite good. it can get quite busy on weekend evenings - be sure to get there early and don't be surprised if you find yourself waiting. most find the wait worth it (there's a reason it's so busy!) - take a walk around lovely downtown Sylvania while you wait - it's small enough that you'll probably hear your name being called! i've been waiting patiently for Upside Brewery to get up and running and it sounds like they are! i haven't been there in a few weeks but i'm long overdue, and quite looking forward to checking out the new beers. read more

J&G's is my favorite when I'm in the mood for thin crust pizza. We always get the same thing: gyro sampler, Greek salad, cheese pizza. Although I have tried the pizza with other toppings, cheese is king here. If you add more than one other topping the crust loses its integrity. So, stick with cheese. And it's GOOD cheese. They use fresh slices instead of shredded. The sauce isn't overkill, everything is nicely balanced. The Greek salad is fantastic but if the feta was fresher it would be a home run. The gyro meat is sliced right off the spit and I find it to be my favorite in town for seasoning and tenderness. I have no advice on other things on the menu because I stick with the same thing each time. As for the waitstaff and interior, it's pretty much what you would expect. It's busy and bustling so the waitresses move people along efficiently. I've never had a bad experience or a rude waitress. The decor has remained unchanged in the last two decades (or longer). It's dark and cramped but it feels familiar and homey. I have a small number of places in the Toledo area that I like to bring out of town guests and this one of them. read more

Always our go-to pizza joint! We've dined in many times over the years - the set-up and decor of the restaurant is no frills, but cozy and charming. Like a mom-and-pop restaurant. The staff is always very kind and, again, no frills because they are usually very busy. The pizza is truly our favorite with lots of cheese, a thinner but not soggy crust, and salty sauce. As of recent we've started to get the small gyro platter on the side to take home for lunches because it is seasoned and cooked to perfection and the gyro sauce is so delicious. I have never had a bad meal at J & Gs. My favorite is the thin crust pizza. Only comes thin crust but it is delicious. They also have delicious Greek salad's and gyros. That's usually all I ever order but there are a few other things on the menu that I am sure are just as good. Nice hometown restaurant I would recommend to anyone. shhhhh...this is a local secret 'hot spot'! We love it! If you like authentic Greek food.....lamb right off of the turn table roaster...and the best darn thin crust pizza around...Then this is the place for you! Gyros....White creamy sauce dancing atop the spicy lamb meat...Tomatoes and onions placed delicately in a warm freshly baked pita....Uhhhh...ahhhh! Can you smell it? Pizza.....Dripping with oozy cheese and just the right amount of grease ..if ya know what I mean. Now the Lasagna....Not such a fan of. But... it's ok. The art of cooking a pizza is perfected with the ovens placed by the front door. Watch them roll the dough...throw it and tenderly place it in the ovens! It is dinner and a show. LOL And Sometimes you do need the show too....especially on the weekends, the line to be seated is out the door...the place is as big as old mother hubbards shoe! LOL That is the local charm of the place...it is small, dark and myserious! If they added on...it wouldn't be the same! Parking is an artform in itself...One does need to be patient! I love J & G Pizza when I'm in the mood for a pizza that tastes remotely like a pizza you'd get out East. I tend to always order the same things, a large sausage pizza, gyro platter, and large greek salad. The pizza's flavor is excellent. However, the crust is a little too thick or needs to be cooked slightly longer at a higher temperature. There is absolutely no crunch on the crust and but rather leaves room for a slight gummy texture when completing your chews. This is not okay and my least favorite thing about the pizza. However, the sauce is solid, the cheese is excellent (provolone, I believe), and the sausage is good. Add all that together and you get the best pizza I've had in the area. The gyro meat is fantastic, subtle cumin, marjoram, garlic, and dare a say a pinch cinnamon? Either way, it's delicious. The salad is has a fairly good greek dressing and large chunks of feta. I also had Yuengling while I was at J & G's which is awesome because you can't get it in Michigan (at least not yet). The service can be slightly iffy. When I went last week, the server was terrible. She felt it a priority to chat with friends at another table for roughly ten minutes before bothering to greet us. It took another 5 minutes for the drinks. Overall, I'll still come back as service isn't usually this blatantly terrible. Be prepared to wait in the evening hours as the place is rather small. It's worth it, though. read more

I can't believe so many people actually LIKE this pizza. Ordered some pizza for carry out. It was bland and flavorless and not enough sauce. Also we got salad and they put the dressing on the salad for our to go order. So by the time we got home the dressing had leaked all over the damn car and wasn't even on the salad anymore. Who does that for take out? Apparently the people of Sylvania have horrible taste in pizza because I can't believe that anybody would ever order that a second time. My parents have been enjoying this restaurant since they started dating in the late 70's. The, growing up in Sylvania, it was a huge treat in our family when Mom said "I dont feel like cooking tonight, let's go to J&G for dinner". Now over 30 years later, my own children love coming here to split a large pepperoni and sausage pizza share a big greek salad (they love the generous blocks of feta on the greek salad). I love getting the gyro, the juicy flavorful meat is second to none. Over the years, this pizza palace hasn't waivered in quality of ingredients and down home service. I've enjoyed different kinds of pizza all over the country and this pizza palace will always be my favorite. We have three generations of our family who love J&G, I promise you will too :) read more

J&Gs used to have great gyros and pizza, not so much anymore. On a recent visit, I had a question for the server - her response: you are just going to have to wait! She had one other table and could not be bothered to answer a simple question. When taking the order: what do you want? Now she is up to 3 tables - a total of 6 people...and she brings the wrong order... Lets get to the food. The spinach pie was half the size of a playing card, maybe 1/2 thick and flavorless. My gyro was so dry it was really more like jerky. My friends pizza only had one of the items he ordered - likely got the wrong pizza??? Horrible service and bad food.
