I just found out that J&G Pizza Palace makes its own gyro meat in house! (By the way, I do realize that the phrase "making meat" sounds a little repugnant.) However, given its one of a kind flavor, I wasn't overly surprised to find this out. "My source" still wouldn't elaborate on which spices are used, however. The lamb/beef/whatever-the-hell-ever-spice combo tastes incredibly delicious, and is, quite honestly, the best I've ever eaten. (I'm not saying that the finished gyro "sandwich" is the best ever, just the meat). I like it in the Greek salad or by itself over rice (gyro platter). If you are a fan of gyros, you really ought to give J&G a try. read more

I LOVE the interior of this place If I get to sit at a booth. It takes you back in time. I am however not a fan at all of being sat at a table with other ppl in a different group. I don't care if there is a chair in between us. Nope, not gonna do it! I like the pizza. The cheese is very good, the sauce has good flavor. I could use a little more of it. The crust is meh. It's a little tough for me and desperately needs a brush of olive oil when it comes out of the oven. That would make a world of difference I think. My parents first went to J and G's 47 years ago and we grew up eating here (always a family favorite). I moved away and went back to Toledo this weekend for the first time in 10 years. It's amazing that J & Gs has not changed one iota. Same menus. Same wallpaper. Same everything... including the fantastic food. We had the pizza (cut into squares) that has a super thin crust. The gyros here is literally the best I've had in the country. And the spaghetti is also great. Can't say enough about this place but you gotta love a joint that shows this much consistency for 5 decades. I have been all throughout the United States trying to find pizza and gyros that match the top-notch and consistent quality and flavor that J&G's provides. I've been to many 4 and 5-star restaurants but this tops anything I've ever experienced. I lived in Portland for the last 3 years working in the hospitality and restaurant industry there where food culture and food tourism are central to what the city stands for. Still, I could find nothing better than this small local eatery. Growing up in south Toledo, I would come to this restaurant to celebrate all my birthdays. My mother would tell me of her and friends coming here after a long shifts at work or going there after the bar with her husband. So! You must try the Gyro dinner with their delicious rice. It's so hard hard to find a place that does gyros the traditional way, slicing pieces off on the rotating spindle. Also required is the simple cheese pizza, a lovely, thin crust, not crispy, Greek style. The Greek salad is excellent - an awesome house vinaigrette and huge slice of feta cheese over top. read more

We were lucky to get there at 5:00 pm. No lines and a close park in the small parking lot. Sidewalks and lot are uneven so I stepped in a 3" puddle even though it was raining lightly. The food was good. The Gyro was stuffed with meat and had a few grilled onions and a small slice of tomato. I asked for a side of lettuce. I could hear the cooks talking about the request like it was unusual. The Tzatziki sauce was mild and served on the side. The shell was paper thin Not one you could pick up but the meat was plentiful and tasty. The J and G Pizza was is a good choice for our other meal. Plenty of cheese and toppings on a thin crust. J&G 's is a beloved Sylvania institution and it only adds to the appeal that they are offering excellent craft beer brewed in house.

My wife and I along with one of our friends went in to grab dinner and as soon as we walked in the experience was horrible. The waitress had an attitude from the beginning. My wife and our close friend decided to split a pizza and I decided to order a chicken gyro platter with fries. What came out was black burnt chicken and instead of fries I received garlic bread. I literally ate 2 pieces of the 16 piece gyro platter that the waitress made sure she announced as we were leaving. My friend tried one piece of the chicken and as a cook of 15 years he said it was horrible and my wife tried a piece as well. I put the platter at the end of the table and waited for the waitress to get the bill and she asked if I wanted the cook to remake it. Obviously if he or she can't make it the first time then I'm out. So I asked for my bill and of course I got charged the full $18.00 for the platter because the waitress stated I ate half the chicken which obviously I didn't. So when my wife said something she got very aggressive and almost acted like she wanted to fight my wife which I wouldn't let happen but she continued to run her mouth in the middle of the restaurant. Ive been a business man for 24 years that's ran multiple million dollar businesses. I would fire this person on the spot as a manager as she doesn't belong in customer service. The owners may need to evaluate their employees. She was absolutely outright horrible and rude. I will spread the word to everyone I am affiliated with not to waste there time nor money. I was always happy with the food but after tonight I'll never go back amd not because of the food. The hostess took our name and we went outside to wait. After 25 minutes I went back inside to check how much longer the wait was. That's when she said I called your name and I didn't come up. I ask why would you have seating outside to wait and not come out to call our name? She just said it would be another 30 minutes. No apology, no I'm sorry, nothing. I grew up in Sylvania and come back every couple of years. J&G's hasn't changed a bit - same great thin crust Greek-style pizza (salty and delicious), same Greek salads and other treats. It's always packed with a line out the door but it's well worth the wait - you can walk to the historical park across the street or stroll the neighborhood to kill some time, or just crowd into the entryway and watch the pizzas roll out of that ancient oven. I got 3 words for ya... Thin Crust Pizza. That... and Gyros ...are what they are known for. I concur with many other reviews, so read them for the low down beyond what j have said. I do not like Greek Salad personally, but every time I have eaten here with someone who had it, I had to listen to comparisons and how it stacked up against other Greek salads elsewhere. Usually #1 to #5 in their personal top 10. I don't know myself. Here's my tip on this place: It gets crowded during peak times, so much that the line can extend outdoors. If the weather is nice, it's a good time to socialize, but when it's poopy out, I have a crowd busting procedure. I simply get there on a Friday at 4:55 pm or Saturday about 425 or 455. If can beat everyone getting out of work there , I have little or NO wait. Every minute past 5 pm that gives people time to run home ,change, pick up people , then drive down there... Will be people clogging the place up. (It's small) There coming... Beat them. Then enjoy good food. read more

I grew up in Sylvania, and whenever I find myself back in town, J&G's is definitely on my to-do list! The place is the definition of a dive, but you don't go there for the decor. You go there for the HUGE Greek salads (complete with a heaping slab of feta cheese) and the unique, delicious pizza. I've taken people from out of town to J&G's to give them a sense of what "we locals" eat, and every single one of them has told me that this place has the best pizza they've ever had. This is a hole in the wall place with not enough seats, let alone room for people to stand and wait to get a seat. But the gyro's and kabobs are great! Even the very basic spaghetti is good. The pizza is very different, but good and nice just for being different. Best of all, while the food is very good, the prices are ridiculously cheap. If there's such a thing as classic Sylvania, OH fare, J&G's is it! Uniquely flavored, hand tossed pizzas, spectacular gyros are the specialties of the house. I don't know what it is that makes their pizza so different. First of all, they put their toppings under the cheese, and they cut it in small rhomboid slices, but I'm pretty sure it's the cheese that they use that makes the flavor of it different from anything else I've had anywhere. I used to not care for it, but have grown to need it when I come back home. Likewise the gyros, sliced off a proper giant, spinning, broiling hunk of spiced lamb and beef is another must have when I'm in town. Protip: the gyro appetizer is an enormous amount of gyro meat, along with onions, tomato, tzatziki sauce and a slice of garlic bread. They apparently don't give out pita bread with it anymore. My theory is that too many people caught on to the fact that it was a much better deal than getting the gyro sandwich. With a tiny dining room and a legacy history in the area, expect to wait for seat. When I do eat there, I also appreciate the meaty, lava hot lasagna, but we live nearby, skip the hassle, and take out pretty much every time, to the joy of our overstuffed bellies. read more

A little family bar right on main street. When you walk in to the place the kitchen is right on your left, and the awesome smell of pizza hits you right away, and that is some great pizza. The seating area is in the back and there are always plenty of tables open. The area is dimly lit and and looks like a true blue collar mid west bar. The menu is all bar food, aside from the pizza, and it is very high quality snacks. Sure, it is not the best diet, but it is well worth every bite. The beer needs to be noted, order the drafts! They come in a chilled mug which is cold enough to slightly freeze the beer, a perfect contrast to the hot pizza in front of you. The staff is a standard bar staff. Quick, accurate with your order, often chewing gum, and more than willing to sit at your table and talk with you while they are slow and bored. This is a true, fun neighborhood bar. read more

Time warp! I haven't been to this restaurant since the age of 15. I dont know why. I always remembered my first visit. It was so good I remembered everything about my meal, the visual of my pizza and salad, the flavors and aromatics and that was over 35 years ago. It is a restaurant persons dream to have a little place like this that does so well. When you walk in it has the traditional old style set up seeing the pizza artist spinning their doughs, and as you walk into the very cramped dining area your are quickly taken back to the 70's with orange and black paisley still mostly fuzzy walls. Orange and brown is the colors. It is so cool. The decor compliments the vibe except for the spot lamp wrapped with foil pointing to a weird train picture. Also four small black lacquer ceiling fans very mismatched. (This has nothing to do with the food but It disturbs me). P.S. I have two 70's lamps that will match your current cool orange ones you can have to replace the foil one, just contact me. OK as for the food. since I had not been here in years I ordered the exact meal I had prior. A Greek salad this time with with extra feta. First of all the normal salad has a lot of feta which I forgot after so many years. When I got my salad I was in heaven. It had a pound of huge sliced feta that covered the salad! Yum! The homemade Greek dressing that topped this cheese and heavy herbs made this so much better. I ordered a sausage, onion and cheese pizza. I remember having the traditional pool of grease from the cheese and sausage. This time no oil which I shouldn't have anyway. No oil probably due the change in cheese. One bite and I wanted to kick my self for not going here more often. The pizza had a little more cheese than I prefer, however the balance of flavors with the fresh sausage onions and sauce was perfect. I ate as much as I could but I was so full from the huge salad. World class gyros, excellent service, and some of the best pizza in the Midwest. J&G is a long-standing Sylvania institution that you simply must visit if in the Toledo area. When I lived in the area, it would get super packed since people love this place to death. The pizza and gyros were so good, and when it comes to gyros, there is an incredible amount of stiff competition around Toledo. The best gyros I've had in my life have all been in the Toledo area, and J&G is right at the top. It's an awesome spot that hasn't changed in years. The decor is very old school neighborhood pizza joint (probably looked exactly this way in the 70's), which only adds to the ambience.
