Man oh man did I want to love this place. For that chocolate swirl croissant alone, right?!!! The latte was pretty decent, the croissant was tasty (but not as good as it looked,) but the drip coffee was BITTER. Usually I judge a good cup of coffee by whether it can get cold without becoming bitter. This cup was bitter after about two sips (i.e. still piping hot)... and basically I couldn't even finish it. The vibe in this spot is okay - little cold overall. Parking is quite difficult most of the time. Overall not a place I would go out of my way to go to again. This place is a major fail if you're looking for a tasty drink and great customer service. My husband and I walked several blocks in the rain to grab a cup of tea based on the Yelp! reviews. The place was empty (on a Sunday) which I thought could be due to the pandemic, but after my experience I know why. 1) Horrible customer services 2) You MUST order by phone when you walk in (scanning a barcode, giving email address, phone number etc.) or they won't serve you I wasn't keen on giving out my personal information or having to spend extra time using their online ordering form, but I figured I'd just do it since we walked all this way. It was a bit of a hassle for just two small drinks. I submitted my payment, then sat around outside to wait. After about 15-minutes, I went back inside to check on my order and they claimed it was never received. I told them to just forget it, and waved goodbye. I called my bank, and the charge had hit my account. What a waste of money and time. We walked home (no drinks, and our money spent). They called me over a half hour later and told me the drinks were ready for pickup. I would have preferred they just refunded my card (since I told them forget it) and never called. When I expressed my frustration by phone with their ordering process and delays, and they explained how they're "very busy" and I must have given them the wrong name for my order. These are very hard times, and coffee shop owners should value the customers that still take the time to still walk into their facilities to support their business. I understand that online ordering is taking a front seat, but that does not excuse poor customer service for in-person orders. I do not recommend this place to anyone looking for a tasty warm drink on the go. In over 20-years of a coffee and tea obsession, this was by far the most inconvenient, complicated and delayed processes to enjoy two small teas. Portland is full of great coffee shops that have great customer service to go along with your order! Go somewhere else. read more

This spot is excellent for meetings, food, drinks of all kinds, and ambiance. The only place it falls short is its WIFI service. On any given day you can get more than a dozen laptops here, once that happens trying to click anything on the Internet can become near impossible. They may have enough bandwidth to support 12 laptops, but whoever set up the Wi-Fi router here is not limiting the maximum bandwidth for laptop, which results in a few customers getting all the bandwidth, and the rest left to tether off their phones. tethering off your phone might be an acceptable solution, except my reception using Verizon here is also terrible, which means I can't use a hotspot either. The owner either needs to increase their Wi-Fi package to support more concurrent users, or put smarter limits per connected laptop so that people can share the connection more fairly. meanwhile I will still keep coming back here for the great food, coffee, and meeting ambience. But heavily limit my laptop usage to projects I don't need the Internet for, like writing a blog post or preparing an article, doing some graphic design work, drafting a book chapter and so forth. read more

One of the best lattes I've ever had to date. Creamy, delicious, and not bitter, I was ready to down the whole thing within minutes. Ample seating and modernly simplistic decor, a great place for work/study. It attracts a young crowd with laptops and books. Easier to find parking than other coffee shops downtown. If you can snag a spot in front of the shop, you're allowed free 2 hours of parking at no charge. The menu you see on yelp is not recent, I will try and snag a photo next time or hoping someone who reads this will do so themselves! But a latte is about $4, to add a flavor (i.e. vanilla) is $1 extra. And then to add an alternative milk is $1.50... and I mean a regular coconut milk, nothing special. $6.50 for a 12oz latte seems a bit extreme considering other shops are in higher demand areas and probably pay more for rent and charge much less, so what gives? I would probably visit again but I hope they rethink milk alt pricing soon :) read more

This is a lovely coffee shop in a lovely neighborhood a short walk from the Hawthorne bustle. There is lots of attractive and comfortable outdoor seating, miraculously all in the shade on this sweltering day. We were not at all hungry, thanks to a gargantuan breakfast at Jam, so we had cold drinks while enjoying the breeze and reading our books. Both the oat milk latte and the peach iced tea were excellent. We hope to be back for a proper breakfast before we head back to Seattle. read more

The coffee isn't as "earthy" as I like it, it's a bit too acidic, light and bright for me. It's still fantastic coffee, just not as bold as I like. 2. They are open until 6pm (5 on weekends), but they stop serving food at 3pm, which sucks. 3 out of 5 times that I'm here I would have bought food but none was available to customers. I've been an Upper Left regular for about 2 years and it will always be my favorite PDX coffee shop! Killer beverage menu with loads of fun and delicious house specials (usually lattes) carefully poured by some of our city's best baristas. Every drink Upper Left pours is tasty and quality, but they do 2 of my favorite Latin American drinks and they do them exceptionally well - the cortado and café de olla. Quickly becoming one of my favorite spots to work, read, and get some great coffee. First, love all the natural lighting that pours in from the huge wall of windows along the entrance. The place just feel airy, bright, clean...but not overly sterile. There's a great energy to the place. You can feel the bustle of the community that gathers here as part of their daily and weekly ritual. The coffee is great. They take the time to feature every roast on the menu with the corresponding drink option, like where the beans are from and the flavor profile. Such a simple meaningful touch that many great coffee shops don't take the time to do. They have an ample selection of pastries from a couple of my other favorite spots in town, Crema Bakery and Little T. Best part about this coffee shop is their small food menu. They have a small kitchen that serves up some unique food options, making this a place a really great blend of roaster, coffee shop, and cafe. read more

Dang it -- I think the experience of this place has dropped to 3.5 stars for me personally, due to the fact that it is so often extremely busy, and the crowded feel and high amount of chatter makes it hard to think. This really hasn't affected the quality offerings or friendly service, however, so I have to say they are still As Good as it Gets! - Interior is so sleek and airy, with giant windows and a big skylight! - If you order the fancy tea here (Spirit loose leaf), it comes on a lovely platter with a little timer for perfectly steeped tea, plus adorable placard with tea description and timer instructions!!! (pictured below) - Insanely gourmet avocado toasts and other toasts with the tastiest garnishes in town. Delicious doesn't do it justice! What's beyond that? My Romesco Toast; that's what's beyond that! Creamy (egg yolk & white cheddar,) savory (romesco sauce,) goodness on crispy sourdough wheat bread. The fresh ground pepper, sea salt and thick-cut green onions on top almost did me in! The latte I enjoyed was quite impressive as well. Strong with creamy overtones. Several milk choices available! It pains me not to give 5 stars, but the customer service was a bit condescending. I know, doesn't seem possible in this setting, but it was definitely there. It was my first time, and my questions were met with rushed, inconvenienced answers, and when my food was provided, it was done so almost begrudgingly. Thank goodness for the toast. The best coffee in Portland! I love the people who work here, they are super knowledgeable about coffee and have even helped me troubleshoot some of my home pour over issues. I usually buy a bag or two of beans when I'm here. They always have interesting origins on rotation. This a solid spot. I HIGHLY recommend it for a working or meeting place as the windows make it really easy to stay focused with all the light that they let in. They have options of high and low seating. Indoor and outdoor. Just about any size group could be accommodated. I would be remiss if I didn't mention their toast scene. I am a regular coffee drinker, and when I'm not traveling or out of the house I drink drip or pourover coffee that I make at home. I love to use local beans from wherever I am and support roasters that are doing the coffee, community and customers justice. Went here on a whim to grab a cup of coffee and maybe a bag of beans if my drip was good. I was greeted with the message that I had to order online and wait for them to process my order, pour it and put it on a dedicated section of counter. I understand the contactless version of transactions but for a drip coffee its extremely excessive. If it is to protect the consumers it doesn't really matter because the barista is still handling the cups. If it is to protect the baristas, I understand that too, but they could still take an order from a distance or at the door and just not accept cash. Either way, the delay for already made coffee was not really too frustrating in the moment as I was waiting for an food order I placed at the carts across the street. The drip was just OKAY though, nothing exciting or interesting, so I wasn't inclined to buy a bag of beans. I get that most people ordering drip arent looking for a fruity african coffee like me or an interestingly processed variety that imparts unique characteristics, but this was just medium roast coffee flavor, no defining qualities. It was fine, I would drink it again if I had to and not complain, but I just wouldnt go out of my way for it again like I kind of did. read more

The staff is incredibly friendly and personable, the food is delicious (holy mother the Turkish eggs, you NEED to get the Turkish eggs), and the coffee is consistently delicious. Was in town for a conference and stopped in for breakfast and a coffee. Staff was really chill and easy going. I asked the person helping me for his favorite breakfast item and he recommended that I try the Turkish eggs. They were delicious and very different than any poached egg dish that I have ever had. I just wish it came with one more piece of toast so that I could finish the remainder of the yolk/spread on the side. Before I left I bought 3 different kinds of beans for family members (see picture). So far, we've only tried the cold brew blend. Delicious! The interior is simple and sleek. Lots of windows allow for great natural light. Great spot to enjoy your morning with a good book. I will definitely be back the next time I am in town. read more
