Matta is located on the quieter side of the Pearl District, near the Flanders walking bridge. Because it's a bit tucked away, the cafe does not feel crowded, which makes it a great spot to relax. I visited during the daytime cafehours. The background jazz music was excellent and played at a comfortable volume, not too loud. I ordered an espresso boosted matcha and really enjoyed it. The drinks are a little on the pricey side, but considering the columbian specialty bean, size of the drink and also spacious seats, it felt fine. The interior has a natural, green vibe that makes the space feel calm and inviting. The bartender was very sweet and welcoming. The same location changes to a weekend bar in the evening called Secret Grove, where I have not been. Would love to check it out too. read more

I got an affogato and it was so delicious the flavor of the espresso was bold but not overpowering. That combined with the ice cream was perfect for a warm Portland day. Once inside some Hawaiian feel ambience jumps right in front of you. On top of the Hawaiian feeling, a bit of a modern Tiki bar ambience is seen a little mixed in. The young lady at the bar is/was the epitome of the best customer oriented service worker. The moment I stepped in, she, with the sweetest voice, welcomed me. This instantaneously broke the ice. After walking in the chilly morning in downtown Portland, this was a much needed ice breaker to warm me up to the center of my body. "What brought you in?" "How did you hear about us" to strike a friendly conversation with me followed. She then walked me through the menu a little bit but she let me take my time to peruse it on my own. I didn't feel pressured into deciding at all. My eyes caught "Espresso Boosted Dirty Chai/Matcha". When I said that alouy, she explained that it's on the sweeter side but she then said that said sweetened could easily be tailored to match my tastes/needs. I didn't hesitate for asking her to incorporate my likings into it: decrease the sweetness down to 1/3. She pleasantly received it. While paying, she continued to carry on a conversation with me to get to know me (I told her I was visiting Portland for a day from Denver. She then elaborated that she'd be visiting Denver next week for the first time. What a coincidence!) She said to take a seat where she'd bring my Espresso Boosted Dirty Chai to my table. What a kind gesture. My chai was, first of all, beautifully made in a large cup on a matching coaster. When I took my first sip, oh boy, it immediately hit the spot. Just the right amount of sweetness as I asked for; the barista perfected it although like a piece of cake (she later came to me and asked how the sweetness was to which I said it was simply perfect. She gave me her sweet "yay" and off she went back to the bar.) So in conclusion, ambience checked, service checked, quality checked. What else should I say to give this place better accolades to elevate it? Nothing!! What a wonderful place! If this place was in Denver, I would frequent it. PS - this place serves alcohol. Firstly, the food was well worth the wait. Everything came out piping hot - the cheese pulls were insane! The bakery desserts (coffee cake muffin and cinnamon rolls) were warmed up too. I am still thinking about the mashed potato and cheese arepa, as well as the vegetable empanada. All the arepas and empanadas were delicious though and I would love try them all again next time. I love how they all came with a side of plaintain chips and some amazing salsa. The drinks were great too! My friend said this was probably the best chai latte they had in town. My first thoughts as I walked in, was what a beautifully done space. The interiors are amazing with plants and wooden hues taking Centre stage. The space is huge and there is plenty of seating. We were the only ones in at the time and so got immediately attended to. The staff was sweet and very welcoming. I got a cappuccino and my husband got a macchiato. Both drinks were very well made. There are plenty of options in the form of drip, espresso, cold brew, and pour over. There were a few baked goods and other food items on the menu. We picked a coffee cake muffin which was as good as our beverages. The space include seating designed to be communal and adaptable to both the coffee shop and cocktail bar concepts and it did feel very inviting and we ended up getting another cup and spending more time. I pretty much try to stick to open air or very well ventilated situations so I love the open garage doors even in the evening. By day a coffee bar and by night, well, a coffee - themed drinks bar )along with many other usual drinks). Small bites in the evening menu like empanadas and arepas. The one opportunity is to have a greater selection of breakfast items. It was limited and I always have to have food alongside coffee or I get too jittery. The booths and tables in general are well spaced, and some even have plant protection for more privacy, so it's an ideal spot to meet with friends, for a date, or studying. The restrooms are huge, clean, and clearly are ready to party at night. I'm curious if during winter, will the large doors be open or closed? I hope open! They offer a great selection of coffee, some options are basic, but they're all quite good. One thing to note is that their syrups aren't house-made, and they use Oregon Chai, which is on the sweeter side. I mention this because chai is a popular drink, and some might prefer it less sweet. This is a fantastic spot to relax, hang out, and maybe snap some Instagram shots or videos. They also host brunches and evening events with another company. Extremely disappointed in the reality of this place. Yes the decor is great, very green and welcoming. The coffee was good but the food was terrible. The cinnamon roll was so hard the plastic forks and knifes couldn't even cut into it. The brownie was so also hard, the empanadas were the only things that were semi warm, they were okay. The banana chips are stale. Oh and the Pan de Bono super hard and cold. So hard I couldn't even eat it, the empanadas are just re-heated everything else is cold. I like the concept of a cafe by day and cocktail bar by night. I first came here to try their expresso martini at the recommendation of a friend. It's delicious! In the evening this place is called Secret Grove and because it's fairly new, it's not crowded -- they even have a DJ! I would frequent this place often as a last stop for the night. However, the last time I was here, my friend waited 30 mins for a drink WHEN THE BAR WASN'T ANYWHERE NEAR FULL CAPACITY. So she went up to the bar to ask about it and mentioned it had been close to 30 mins. She sat back down and the waiter/bartender approached our table to tell her that it hadn't been that long and that "the computer doesn't lie." So we challenged him and she was able to pull up her AMEX transaction history to actually confirm that it had been 31 mins. He apologized but the damage had been done. What terrible service and even worse, the girl bartender behind him was laughing at the situation. For this, I can't give this place a high rating. This behavior is disgusting. read more
