Stopped by Devil's Dill while I was in Oregon and really liked how unique their menu was. They have a lot of interesting sandwich combinations that you don't normally see, so it was pretty hard to choose. I ended up getting the No. 4 which comes with red wine braised beef, grilled onions and peppers, cheddar, and horseradish aioli. There were a ton of different flavors going on, but they worked really well together. The bread was really good too, although it was a little dry. I noticed some other reviews complaining about the amount of meat, but I actually thought they gave a pretty generous portion. We also ordered some pickles on the side, which were surprisingly good and definitely worth trying. Overall, a really good sandwich spot if you're looking for something a little different. I especially liked how creative their menu was, and I'd definitely recommend giving the No. 4 a try although it is a little pricier than the other items. read more

Stopped in here around 11 at night for a quick but formidable bite. The bar next door and sidewalk out front were poppin. Inside there's a counter, an atm, and a couple benches to sit at and wait for your order. My sandwich was up in a few minutes and I got to carry my warm log of a meal back home to devour. It features SUBSTANTIAL pieces of mortadella, salami, provolone, balsamic aioli, kale and a cherry pepper relish. I really like Devil's Dill! At first, I was hesitant to try it because I'm not a huge fan of kale. But I'm so glad I did because our food was damn delicious! The simplicity of their menu makes ordering very easy. I highly recommend Sandwich #2 (Bacon, Kale, Avocado, Tomato Jam, Sweet Aioli). And my wife really likes Sandwich #5 (House Roasted Turkey, Provolone, Kale, Red Onion, Tomato Jam, Herbed Aioli). The tomato jam is out of this world. It really works, and their soft ciabatta --so good! Also, they serve Coca-Cola! Also, just a couple of tips that you might find helpful: Parking is scarce so plan accordingly. Their soup constantly changes depending on the day so definitely call beforehand so you know what soup you're getting. Sandwich spots in Portland are everywhere, but where are the elite ones? Welp, found one right here. I only had the turkey one with the tomato jam. I mean the bread? Like come on. I've said this before... the most underrated and overlooked part of a Sammie is the bread. These guys got it. The tomato jam? Almost marinara but like not? It was so fresh and unique. Devil's Dill is a Hell of a Deal. I went in after ten PM and was greeted with a simple nod from the counter and the sounds of the band in the attached bar, no pressure to order quickly. As I stood their staring up and the nearly austere menu, I mean, all told there's less than twenty items listed in black and red text, the gent at the till waited patiently and took my order with nary a twitched whisker. As I sat and waited for my order I had the option to listen to the band next door, look at the posters of bands that would be playing there later on, and trying to decipher the overlapping, almost abstract scrawl of the signed sheets of butcher's paper tacked to the wall. After not long at all I was given my order of a Number 4 and their take on German potatoe salad. The sandwich, their, in the words of their website, Bastardized (But Better) Roast Beef Sandwich, the combo of the tender red wine braised beef, the almost sweetness of the grilled onions and peppers, the rich-pungent horseradish aioli, and some melted cheddar to bind it between the softly chewy bread made for a warm, decadent experience. The flavors on this sandwich make for a nice break from the usual deli options. The bread was good, but not amazing. The sandwich is not huge, but it's priced right. I try to be lenient with my five star reviews but this shop is by far the best sandwich shop in all of SE Portland, maybe all of the city. I have never been unsatisfied with a sandwich from here. I had a very disappointing and concerning experience here. The menu was not fully transparent about ingredients. I have a garlic allergy, and it was not disclosed that the olive oil used was infused with garlic. After eating, I had an allergic reaction and unfortunately had to go to urgent care. When I called the shop to inform them, the man I spoke with was very passive and did not seem to take the situation seriously. Food allergies are serious, and clear ingredient disclosure and appropriate concern from staff are essential. Because of this experience, I will not be returning and cannot recommend this place, especially to anyone with food allergies. read more

Having just finished binge-watching The Bear on Hulu last night, I think I was primed to enjoy this meal more than I otherwise would. But still. It was legit. The vibe is a little run down. Rustic. The sandwich was good. Starting with the bread. It was some variant of ciabatta. I'm not culinary enough to really describe why it is good, but it was good. Very soft. Easy to chew. But like, not too soft. A little grainy. You can taste the flower a little bit. Just a little though, not in an offputting way. I liked it. I liked the bread overall. It may seem like not a big deal, but I think it's a huge component of the sandwich. The meat was good too. Not dry. The pieces weren't too big or too small. No chunks of fat that you can't too. A few fattier pieces that melt in your mouth which was awesome. The sauce was pretty good too, although it was a little too sweet for me. And oily. Granted, I asked for the sesame slaw to be left off. I think if it were included it would have been the perfect contrast: a little crunch and acid to cut through the meaty, bready and oily other components. It was also only $13 or so. Nowadays, that's actually a bargain. Especially for a place that is a step or two above in terms of quality and execution. And they're open late. Also hard to find. My friend took me here for dinner tonight and it was so good. I've been looking for a good sandwich place in Oregon for a while now and this definitely fits the bill. I got the turkey sandwich with no onion or kale (I'm allergic) and it absolutely slapped. The garlic aioli was fantastic and the bread was perfectly soft and crunchy. They sell day-old bread but it sells out quickly so I wasn't able to get any this time, but I'm hoping to be lucky enough next time. The guy working the counter was very no-nonsense, get the job done and be nice about it kind of guy. He took our order quickly and didn't have any issues with my removals. The place itself is definitely a hole in the wall and they often have concerts going on next door. There's a doorway connecting the two spaces so the restaurant gets loud, but there aren't tables in there anyway so it doesn't matter. The open kitchen area is very dirty - it made me question the cleanliness and food hygiene. Also, they weren't transparent about the ingredients they use in sandwiches. My partner had to go to urgent care due to an allergic reaction - I called them and they let us know their health and ingredient lists weren't updated and acted very nonchalant. Based on previous reviews, others have similar experiences. It's a shame they don't show their care and due diligence for such serious situations.
