I really like Devil's Dill! At first, I was hesitant to try it because I'm not a huge fan of kale. But I'm so glad I did because our food was damn delicious! The simplicity of their menu makes ordering very easy. I highly recommend Sandwich #2 (Bacon, Kale, Avocado, Tomato Jam, Sweet Aioli). And my wife really likes Sandwich #5 (House Roasted Turkey, Provolone, Kale, Red Onion, Tomato Jam, Herbed Aioli). The tomato jam is out of this world. It really works, and their soft ciabatta --so good! Also, they serve Coca-Cola! Also, just a couple of tips that you might find helpful: Parking is scarce so plan accordingly. Their soup constantly changes depending on the day so definitely call beforehand so you know what soup you're getting. Sandwich spots in Portland are everywhere, but where are the elite ones? Welp, found one right here. I only had the turkey one with the tomato jam. I mean the bread? Like come on. Partner and I went in for some sandwiches around 8:45 on a Monday night. When we walked inside the music was blasting so the guy with a man bun taking our order couldn't hear us very well, he seemed completely uninterested to be working there or helping us. I asked him what chip flavors he had and he just pointed to a rack of chips several feet away that I couldn't really see since it was dark and I just have bad eyesight. Anywho we got our food, sat outside to eat on one of the benches. The sandwiches we got were #5's and they were pretty good I can't lie, the pickles had a weird sweet flavor that we didn't like though. The guy who served us came outside to smoke a cigarette and play on his phone for a bit, then went inside and didn't wash his hands before starting to touch stuff in the kitchen. Another guy with a shaved head did the same thing as well. Before we came in we read a review in which an employee did that, and someone they served got food poisoning from a year ago but we didn't think it would happen to us. I'm happy to report my partner and I do not have food poisoning luckily but seeing the lack of cleanliness was a huge turn off, and seems to be normalized so I'd be wary of this place. read more

Devil's Dill is a Hell of a Deal. I went in after ten PM and was greeted with a simple nod from the counter and the sounds of the band in the attached bar, no pressure to order quickly. As I stood their staring up and the nearly austere menu, I mean, all told there's less than twenty items listed in black and red text, the gent at the till waited patiently and took my order with nary a twitched whisker. As I sat and waited for my order I had the option to listen to the band next door, look at the posters of bands that would be playing there later on, and trying to decipher the overlapping, almost abstract scrawl of the signed sheets of butcher's paper tacked to the wall. After not long at all I was given my order of a Number 4 and their take on German potatoe salad. The sandwich, their, in the words of their website, Bastardized (But Better) Roast Beef Sandwich, the combo of the tender red wine braised beef, the almost sweetness of the grilled onions and peppers, the rich-pungent horseradish aioli, and some melted cheddar to bind it between the softly chewy bread made for a warm, decadent experience. Which was counter pointed beautifully by cold, vinegar sharpness of the potatoe salad, that was just sinfully delicious, I will be back. read more

I had a very disappointing and concerning experience here. The menu was not fully transparent about ingredients. I have a garlic allergy, and it was not disclosed that the olive oil used was infused with garlic. After eating, I had an allergic reaction and unfortunately had to go to urgent care. When I called the shop to inform them, the man I spoke with was very passive and did not seem to take the situation seriously. Food allergies are serious, and clear ingredient disclosure and appropriate concern from staff are essential. It's a pretty basic counter sandwich shop and I got mine to go. I ordered the No. 7, which is the vegan version of the No. 1. It's seitan with BBQ sauce and the Asian slaw. The flavors on this sandwich make for a nice break from the usual deli options. The bread was good, but not amazing. The sandwich is not huge, but it's priced right. My partner had to go to urgent care due to an allergic reaction - I called them and they let us know their health and ingredient lists weren't updated and acted very nonchalant. Based on previous reviews, others have similar experiences. It's a shame they don't show their care and due diligence for such serious situations. My friend took me here for dinner tonight and it was so good. I've been looking for a good sandwich place in Oregon for a while now and this definitely fits the bill. I got the turkey sandwich with no onion or kale (I'm allergic) and it absolutely slapped. The garlic aioli was fantastic and the bread was perfectly soft and crunchy. They sell day-old bread but it sells out quickly so I wasn't able to get any this time, but I'm hoping to be lucky enough next time. The guy working the counter was very no-nonsense, get the job done and be nice about it kind of guy. He took our order quickly and didn't have any issues with my removals. The place itself is definitely a hole in the wall and they often have concerts going on next door. There's a doorway connecting the two spaces so the restaurant gets loud, but there aren't tables in there anyway so it doesn't matter. There are a few tables outside to eat at but we took ours home to eat. I've added this place to my food list in Portland and will definitely be going back! read more

Having just finished binge-watching The Bear on Hulu last night, I think I was primed to enjoy this meal more than I otherwise would. But still. It was legit. The vibe is a little run down. Rustic. Local. Hole-in-the-wall. Unpretentious. Not trying to impress. The focus is on the food. The craft. That's the feeling I got. And it's the feeling I want to have. It added to the experience for me. The sandwich was good. Starting with the bread. It was some variant of ciabatta. I'm not culinary enough to really describe why it is good, but it was good. Very soft. Easy to chew. But like, not too soft. A little grainy. You can taste the flower a little bit. Just a little though, not in an offputting way. I liked it. I liked the bread overall. It may seem like not a big deal, but I think it's a huge component of the sandwich. The meat was good too. Not dry. The pieces weren't too big or too small. No chunks of fat that you can't too. A few fattier pieces that melt in your mouth which was awesome. The sauce was pretty good too, although it was a little too sweet for me. And oily. Granted, I asked for the sesame slaw to be left off. I think if it were included it would have been the perfect contrast: a little crunch and acid to cut through the meaty, bready and oily other components. It was also only $13 or so. Nowadays, that's actually a bargain. Especially for a place that is a step or two above in terms of quality and execution. And they're open late. Also hard to find. You desperately need better gluten free bread, especially if you're going to charge extra for it. It tastes like cardboard. The outside of the bread was so hard it cut the inside of my mouth, while the inside was inedibly soggy, mushy, and crumbly from the BBQ sauce. If you won't consider serving better bread, a tip from a lifelong Celiac: GF bread should by default always be packaged separately from wet ingredients for delivery orders. I paid extra for priority delivery, so the sandwich didn't sit that long (less than 10 minutes). The bread is pretty, but it's a bad recipe. read more
