My friend treated me to the most delicious birthday brunch. It's a cute place with fresh baked goods display upfront. I ordered the blueberry scone with cream (clotted butter). Service is terrible. Two days in a row and two different servers, it took them close to 10 minutes to get a drink order and forget about refills. They desperately need to either hire more help or close down tables. The food is great. Get take out until they get their act together. read more

After arriving at the restaurant at 1:45 (I understood they close at 2) I was led to my aunt's table and ordered right away (a salad) that was good. At 2:00 we were told we have to eat fast (in not such a nice way) because they lock the doors at 2:30. At 2:15 we we're told they were going to use their broom under our table by a truly unhappy girl with earphones on. My aunt went to the ladies room at 2:20. it was at that time that the lights were pretty much shut off. We left the building at 2:25 with the same nasty girl locking the door behind us. Having a small business myself I have some advice for management. why would you allow us to come in if we didn't have enough time to enjoy our lunch? Had a delicious breakfast this morning! Lovely tea service, tasty Greek omelette, and amazing apricot scone with cream--it was called Devonshire cream, but was actually just a hand whipped cream. Still tasty, but not the same. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Unfortunately, the AC was blasting so high that our food got cold. I have to give this place a one star. I have come here for many years as I live in the area and have never experienced the service I did this morning. The staff was extremely rude and lied to me. I went in at 8am and was prepared to order 4 chocolate chip scones. The blonde woman with glasses at the register told me the scones would not be ready for an hour and she had no idea if they would have chocolate chip. So she expected me to wait an hour and they may not even have the scones I wanted. She was rude and I won't be back and neither will my family. They lost valuable customers. read more

Located on West Venice Avenue, and on Mondays one of the only games in town, Upper Crust features both parts of its name in separate sections and although the pastry case up front may seem to lack compared to many modern eateries the majority of the goods are as well priced as they are constructed, the scones something of a signature in six flavors, and with good reason. Offering breakfast till noon, a one hour overlap with the lunch menu that kicks off at eleven o'clock and runs to three, it was with a trio of pastries plus two breakfast plates that the order was placed at 11:57 and delivered hot from the kitchen with minimum delay the quintet drew looks from salad-eating septuagenarians, the fact that pictures were taken spurring on the chatter. Starting first with hot items, the French Toast sliced from a housemade loaf of Banana Bread before a quick Custard bath and light pan-sear, those fancying something sweet but not *sugary* are encouraged to investigate this as an option - particularly with pure maple syrup available for a $1 upgrade - while those looking for something lighter may be better served by paper-thin crepes filled with Strawberry Cream Cheese beneath a topping of compote mixed with Devonshire Cream. Never shy to trend entirely sweet for a meal, the bacon included with French Toast mostly an afterthought, it was with intermittent bites between entrees that pastry-case treats were investigated and although neither the Seven Layer Bar nor Key Lime Square are likely to ignite any fires by way of their inspiration the Strawberry Shortcake is perhaps the best way to spend $6 in Venice as a hemisected Scone is served amidst a mound of imported Devonshire Cream and Strawberries from Florida's own Plant City. read more

The bridge from the Floridian mainland to Venice Island is, in fact, a time machine. You begin your morning in 2014 and *bing* one hundred yards later, you're back in 1920. No, Hortense, there are no penny-farthing bicycles nor are there gas lamps. The cars look modern. I see Nike footwear and smartphones. It just feels old, like a kindly uncle's cable-knit sweater vest, worn but well-loved; calm and reassuring. And if you're looking for breakfast on Memorial Day, you could walk into the Upper Crust and feel like you were in a restaurant from between the wars...the World Wars, that is. The room is long and skinny, two tables and a walkway wide, and the ceilings - the ceilings stretch all the way to heaven. This might be why it feels olde worlde. Ceilings are so much lower thesedays, all the better to A-C you with. The wait staff is mostly mature plus, the decor is decidedly shabby chic (as others here described), and you really feel like you're peddling back a few decades. But don't be lulled into daydreams of doing the Charleston or meeting a flapper. The food is decidedly not antique, servers are pleasant and efficient, and the coffee strong enough to tell you they cater to modern taste. The interesting kicker to breakfast here is the regular passage of trays of fresh-baked wonders from the bakery out back to the shopfront. Scones. Then macaroons. Then muffins, and more scones. Simple cooking theater like that completely makes a place, setting it apart from plastic corporate food troughs. It gives a place life. Oh, and my favorite, they have cloth napkins. Ask nicely and they might even tell you how to find a speakeasy. read more

Scones here are wonderful.....HOWEVER, they advertise hours of 8-12 during corona event. We were there at 9:00 and they had ONE scone available...at 9:00! "We'll have more at 10:00"! We have often been there, in normal times, at 8:00 and they are "out" of several varieties already. Whoever runs this place has no business sense. After so many years, they still do not have a feel for how to keep an inventory of what is probably their most popular items. Very disappointing. read more

Very cute place for a nice breakfast. While I did not have nay of the unctuous offering in the case at the front door, the endless line picking up carry-out proves that they are a must next time. My recommendation is to get a scone with some whipped cream to go. The scones are beyond fabulous. Truly excellent. Light, but somewhat dense, flavourful. Sweet but with a biscuit-y taste. And the homemade whipped cream is the perfect topping. I know real estate in Venice is expensive, but the way tables are crammed in here makes enjoying a meal almost impossible. You are sitting on top of others. Tables for 2 are so small that the sugar, salt and pepper and other accoutrements take up almost all the usable space. Neighbors are mere inches from you. Good thing we had friendly ones. It could have been a very uncomfortable meal. The wait staff does not seem happy. We were tersely asked for our drink order before we even sat down. A request for the flavors of scones available brought a huffy eye roll and some disbelief that we actually wanted the server to go check. A different server brought our food and just dumped it on the table without a word. Maybe they should eat more scones and it would improve their demeanor. Surly wait help does nothing to improve a restaurant experience. Excellent scones, okay setting and below-average service. It adds up to a three-star review from me. read more

Used to be our number one breakfast place in Venice. After our last few experiences we will never be going back. The entrance is congested. It took 10 minutes to get our name on the waitlist. The employees ignore you and avoid eye contact at all cost. We waited another 15 minutes to be seated. After we were seated we waited another 10 minutes for the waitress to come to our table. The waitress was rude, snippy, and sarcastic. The crepes were served cold and tasteless. The waffle was ok but over cooked. I ordered and paid for 5 Scones and cream. When I got home and opened the bag I was given 3 scones and no cream. Never going back. read more

If you have allergies do not eat here. Extremely disappointed. We went to this bakery for scones. The lack of care could have seriously injured our daughter. We ordered scones yesterday, and specifically asked if there were nuts in the cinnamon toffee scone and stated we had severe nut allergies. We could not get a straight answer and they kept saying that it was just toffee and no nuts are added. No one would take the 30 seconds to check with the baker. We picked up the scones today and again asked two staff members at the front the same question about the scone we special ordered the night before. Again, no time was used to check with the baker. We got the scone home and started to examine it. There were almonds! I called back and demanded to get an answer and talk to the baker. They came back with yes there are almonds. It took all of 30 seconds to get the proper answer. 30 seconds to avoid seriously injuring a child. Not too much to ask. The salmon dish was not got enough to ever eat again(way to salty) and the eggs and toast is completely awful(flavorless and supper dry). The advertised cup of fruit consists of 5 small pieces of fruit. I love this place!!!!! I'm a stay at home mom so when I go out, my daughter is always with me. We used to go to a different cafe that I won't name and they would always give me crappy looks because my little girl was with me even though she had never done anything wrong, they almost found us annoying. So it was time for us to find a different cafe and I AM SO GLAD WE FOUND UPPER CRUST!!!! The staff always greets my daughter with a big smile and hug and are so kind and helpful with all of our needs!!! First of all I ordered lattes. I got coffee with cream but didn't realize it until I was able to sip it once I left. Secondly. It was scalding hot. Not the perfect temp for a latte. Third, if it was supposed to be coffee - it tasted watered down. And even my father agreed with me was not good. On a positive note. They offered almond milk for dairy free people. Fantastic little street-side bakery/bistro. Stopped by here with mom on the way home from dog beach (dog-friendly front sidewalk seating). We tried the ruben and monte cristo sandwiches - and they were both great. First let me say that customer service is extremely important to me at any business. This restaurant did so poorly at customer service that we had to leave before ordering, so I'm writing this to warn others who may be tempted to try this place due to the high ranking on Yelp. I can't comment on the food, and looking at the other reviews that might be reason enough to put up with the bad service, but that's not the way I roll. So after getting up a 4am and being on the road all day I was starving and looking for a quick, high quality lunch. I checked out Yelp for the Venice area and this place was the #1 spot for coffee and lunch, so I headed over there without reading the reviews (first mistake). I arrived at Upper Crust with my coworker just after 2pm, and we were immediately put off by the decor -- very "old lady." There was a group in front of us that looked like they'd been waiting for a while, asking themselves "Are they open?" The sign on the door said OPEN, with no hours posted. Finally a lady showed up and seated that group. Then she asked us what we wanted?? Huh? We realized then that they were also a bakery with a pastry counter...but no posted menu or prices. I asked if they had a menu, and was handed one. But still no offer to seat us?? Then I asked if they were seating for the restaurant and the lady reluctantly said yes and seated us. After we sat down my coworker said he overheard the lady talking to the group in front of us and apparently the restaurant portion closed at 2pm...but the bakery was still open. This was not posted anywhere nor explained to me when I asked to be seated. Then I noticed the lady talking to one of the cooks, and the cook then threw a little temper tantrum IN FRONT OF THE CUSTOMERS...apparently because he had to stay late. That's when I'd had enough and left. I have no problem with having certain hours, etc... But make it clear to your customers, treat them with respect, and don't ever put your customers in this kind of awkward position. I will not be back for more of this treatment, I don't care how good the food is. FYI we walked down the street to Jackson's American Grill and had a good quick lunch with good service. read more

I actually found this place on "yelp" We were staying in Venice and didn't want to go to a chain restaurant. This place is charming. Vintage Shabby Chic Decor. My husband got the Denver Omelette and I got the Eggs Bennie. Both were fantastic. His homefries were tasty I know it sounds crazy to comment on home fries how could they be? But I'm not typically a home fries fan. It seems like they were hand cut potatoes and they were fried to the perfect consistency. The Piece de Resistance were the scones. I got the devonshire cream chocolate chip scones. OMG Totally delicious. Make sure you try the scones with their fresh offee. Prices were pretty darn low too. Especially for a tourist town. read more
