Upper Crust has an abundance of breakfast pastries, cookies, cakes/cupcakes, sandwiches, pre-prepared foods, and drinks. The Top Goods: Black Pepper, Goat Cheese and Green Onion Scone (5) Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice (5) Macaroon (4) Quiche (3.5/4) The savory scone was one of my favorite things I ate while in Chico (and believe me I ate a lot)!!! The quiche was yummy but I think the bacon in it was just store bought 'bacon bits' and not real bacon cooked in house, which was a little disappointing. Maybe I'm just being a bacon snob but it makes a big difference. I also got Russian Tea Cakes, Carrot Cake, Coconut Lemon Bar and a Petite Cheesecake, all pretty average. Rick was the employee who helped me and he was extremely nice and patient with me while I was deciding what I wanted. For my most recent trip, we got there "too late" for sandwiches to be made (just after 2pm) but they still had black bean chili and it was yum. I got espresso shots - they were good quality but a bit cold. The biggest set back for me at this place is the atrocious attitude of the staff member that helped us. Yikes. Called in a birthday cake on a Friday morning for pick up on a Sunday morning. It was for my 1 year old's party. Described what I wanted written on it, and asked what kind of cakes they offered. They suggested chocolate and we went with that. Picked it up right on time and it was ready and it looked gorgeous. The writing on it in frosting was perfect - no misspellings and it was legible and written really cute. Brought it home for the party and people went nuts over it. Everyone told me it was the best cake they ever had. It was rich and thick and dense and moist. The frosting was so good too, creamy and sweet with none of that saccharine flavor. I ordered a grilled cheese & tomato soup in-store, then once I got home I realized they had messed up my order by giving me a tuna melt instead of the grilled cheese. I called them & told them what happened and they basically said that it says a tuna melt on the receipt, even though I clearly remember saying "grilled cheese" when I ordered it. The cashier even said "we don't do 1/2 grilled cheese sandwiches only full" to which I replied "that's fine I'll do the full then," so the cashier messed it up when he put the order in. The person on the phone told me they could start a new order for me but that's about it since the receipt says tuna melt. They messed up my order and instead of correcting it and giving me the sandwich I asked for, they blamed me for their mistake. So now I just wasted money on a sandwich I didn't even order that I can't eat, gave them a chance to fix their mistake, and this is how they handled it. Pretty disappointing. read more

Came here after seeing DDD. My bad for not checking the times they serve lunch items like Korean salad and not so Reuben. Place was empty at 4 pm on a Saturday and they had very limited items. The black bean chili was good.....corn muffin really good but would be awesome if it was warm. Came here with high expectations and left a bit deflated. I've enjoyed many wonderful lunches over the decades at Upper Crust. However, today I ordered one of my favorite sandwiches, the tuna melt with gazpacho as the side. When the food arrived, I paused in wonder as I viewed a plate that looked to be bright yellow with a massive overflow of cheddar cheese. There was also what appeared to be an orange bird's nest that turned out, I think, to be fried cheese that was dripping grease all over the plate. It was quite unappetizing and looked and tasted entirely unhealthy. In addition, the gazpacho and/or sandwich was so salty that I had to drink massive amounts of water for hours afterwards. The sandwich including tax and tip amounted to about $18 which is not nothing for a bad experience. I've praised many a delicious cake and pastry from Upper Crust as well as other foods. I've relied upon Upper Crust to enjoy good quality food in Chico. I'd appreciate an explanation before I decide to never return to a restaurant that I once respected. read more

Just spent 2 days in Chico and this was a gem of a find. This is the sort of place that if it was in my town I would weigh 15 pounds more. Went twice, once for a snack and then returned for breakfast. Wonderful pastry display, we had a peach scone and coffee cake and both were delicious and large servings. I was so tempted to get the apple strudel, will have to save it for next time. Breakfast sandwich was great, but the individual breakfast quiches seem to be the thing most people were going for. Very friendly service and they seem to be a cut above the regular students servers you get in Chico at some of these places. read more

We went in for a cake tasting about a month or so ago and I had ordered cakes from them before so I knew I'd be getting my cake there I just wanted to pick my flavors but the experience was so bad that we left and I didn't book them for our wedding. We showed up 5 min late which I apologized for as soon as we came inside and we had a 30 min window to taste the cakes I paid for.. and the the girl immediately says "I was about to just put your cake into to go boxes" then rolls her eyes in front of my family without even trying to hide it!!! brings the cakes out and says "well do you want to know which are the flavors" with such a bad attitude it put a damper on what was supposed to be a happy experience and I was completely ready to buy my cake there. read more

This was my first time at Upper Crust, and I really enjoyed it. I met some friends for a mid- morning treat. The people taking our order at the counter were friendly and patient, as we had a few first timers. My friends opted for cupcakes, which were visually appealing and delicious ( I had a few bites!). I ordered the half sandwich and salad option, pretty reasonably priced at $7.50. I ordered the potato salad with a turkey sandwich. I had to wait about 10 minutes for my sandwich, but the woman bringing it out messed it up and I had to wait another 5. Mistakes happen, and she was very apologetic. When I did get it, it looked and tasted wonderful! Very fresh and unique takes on both dishes. The decor was rustic, and very cute for a bakery. It had a local artists' pieces hanging up. Favorite coffee shop/bakery in Chico! I can't believe I haven't been here before today. From now on, this will be my go-to place for coffee and pastries. The bakery itself is in a large building with plenty of seating. They have large wooden tables which would be great for studying/working on your laptop. It is very clean and well lit, and overall has a great vibe. The pastry selection is seemingly infinite. I decided to get a Lemon Blackberry scone, and it was probably the best scone I've ever had. It tasted freshly baked, and was super moist and flavorful (not dry and bland like most scones). To drink I got a Mexican Mocha, which was also great. That is my go-to drink when trying a new coffee shop, and Upper Crust's was one of the best I've tasted. On top of all that, the prices at Upper Crust (for the pastries/baked goods at least) were cheaper than other local competitors. My scone was massive, and cost nearly a dollar less than a small scone at Tin Roof would. I will definitely be back to Upper Crust, I plan on making it my regular stop for coffee and light breakfast. read more

I don't know why I was shocked to learn that the reviewers that had lackluster experiences with service were spot on. The young man that assisted my boyfriend and I was completely lacking in the customer service department. It seemed like he had just woken up and we were bugging him. I'm sorry I came in to purchase a birthday cake for my grandmother-in-law, a quiche and sweet mother of pearl two Russian tea cakes (and it wasn't even Christmas...that's when they get made in our family). The tea cakes were not planned and were definitely divine but yummy or not, UCB has one more chance to earn a new patron. Besides, I know how to cook and bake it's a choice to allow someone else to do it for me. Oh and it didn't help the situation when HE grabbed the wrong quiche and acted like I was the dummy when I corrected him. Learn what's in your case or make cards on your side of the counter so you can see what the customer is asking for! He did fix his face and quit his mumbling once he realized he was wrong. By far the worst bakery I've been to. Showed up to get a quote on a cake had a specific picture, chevron and flowers 8" cake size. The guy that helped me said I would not get charged a decoration fee and quoted me at 40. Long story short turned into multiple phone calls two days before the event therefore couldn't go to a different bakery so had to go thru with it, my sister tried to pay for the cake over the phone a different employee didn't charge her correctly so had to pay more at time of pick up and ended up with a mess of a cake nothing like the picture and ended up having to leave in the middle of the party to go to Safeway. We were mortified by the cake and wondered why people hyped up this bakery! Never again!! read more

I'm giving 3 stars based on my great memories of this place in its former glory -- the fresh croissants, incredible pastries, perfect sandwiches on homemade bread, and really good soups. Friendly, speedy service. Sadly, the current experience rates just barely 2 stars. The quality just isn't there any longer. And I'm sorry, but The Upper Crust isn't quite so special that they can get away with treating customers with disdain. It's called competition, folks, and unless you raise your game, I don't know why anyone would wait in line for a mediocre sandwich with dismissive service? Last time I went, the soup tasted like someone had emptied out the sink drainer, added some Campbell's Cream of Mushroom and a ton of water. I still shudder thinking about it. read more

I absolutely loved this restaurant. The food has always been great (not to mention the pastries!) and the atmosphere is very nice, but the employees are just so NASTY! I have been to Upper Crust many times and always seemed to leave angry because I was treated so poorly. The women behind the counter greet you with snotty faces and rolled eyes, and are increasingly rude as they take your order and ring you up. I felt unwelcome and quite honestly judged by these women, and many of my friends have experienced the same service. I dont think these employees understand what "customer service" is because they are too concerned with judging everyone, this is NOT how a business should be run. read more

This is a regular place for me! The service is quick, friendly and great! I love getting the Lorraine quiche with breakfast sandwich. This bakery is known for its amazing cakes and sweet treats! I'd highly recommend getting the oat coffee cake. It is so good, especially with a cup of coffee or soy latte. The line gets pretty long on the weekend mornings, but it moves pretty quick. There are a lot of tables for customers, but they tend to fill up, especially during the morning rush. If you're a Chico local, I bet you already love this joint. If you're new to Chico, check out Upper Crust and you definitely won't be disappointed. Don't forget to get the oat coffee cake. That's a must! read more

Upper Crust caught my eye the moment I decided to move to Chico, and I was so thrilled at the potential of being a regular, enjoying the same seat each morning while I had my coffee and worked on homework. It took two visits to confirm that I will never elect to purchase from Upper Crust again. I'd like to speak on behalf of both the service and the product: The service: I felt as if I were inconveniencing any given staff member simply by entering the doors of Upper Crust. In each experience, I was never greeted, which is not necessary but sure is nice. My real tiff was an audible snort was made by the barista when I asked where they kept their cream for the coffee, paired with an extremely uncomfortable stare, and a reluctant nudge toward the milk counter that I obviously didn't see. Additionally, I didn't feel comfortable asking any questions about the product as they urged me to quickly make a decision. I'd completely understand had there been a line, however I had no customers waiting behind me. The product: this is where Upper Crust earns their two stars. They maintain really beautiful presentation, and I very much appreciate the variety of treats they offer. I've tried: a veggie quiche, Scottish shortbread, and espresso macaroon. While each were fair product, I did feel that the prices were steep for what you got. I remember paying $4 for a shortbread cookie. With a serious attitude adjustment, I think this shop could be exponentially more successful. read more

There were 3 servers, not one made an eye contact or even said hello. They were rude when we ordered and they were quick to push us along. We will not return. I think "indifference" is the word I would use to describe the service mentality of the workers there. If you can, get a piece of their Marion Berry pie. Marion berries are a cross of raspberries and blackberries and they got all the best from each parent, they have less seeds and are plump and succulent. The pie was just perfect, not too firm, not too runny. It was enough to make me boost my rating from a three to a four. I'm looking forward to my next visit... I have been going to Upper Crust for many years for their pasta, coffee, and dessert. This past year I've been loving their cake! We received so many compliments on the wedding cake we ordered for my little sister's wedding!!! It was huge for 100-110 people. See picture. Each layer was delicious and perfectly moist. We even chose the banana nut flavor as the bottom tier and that was a hit! The frosting was so tasty and so much better than fondant. The wedding was in October and it happened to be too hot so the top tier melted a little on the side with direct sunlight hitting. My fault. Laurie was so great to work with. I brought in my own decorations and a picture and they were able to turn the cake into something we requested. They were great at following up and delivered on time. I highly recommend Upper Crust for any cake!!! By far, this is the best cake for wedding cake in Chico. Tip: Don't forget to ask for a box for the top tier. read more

I love Upper Crust and usually make it a lunch destination when I go to downtown Chico. They are well known in Chico for their delicious, homemade treats and exquisite wedding cakes. The cases at the front are always loaded with said goodies, they're drool worthy! They offer an extensive variety of homemade treats including different quiches, salads, sandwiches, crustadas, soups, etc. The Thai peanut tofu salad is really good. I've loved everything I've had here including quiche, soups (Flavors rotate) and their pies! The berry pie is excellent, just the right tart and sweet balance. Whenever we've taken baked goods from here to friends or events, everyone has enjoyed them and inquired where they came from! Their baked goods are available for pre order for events and they specialize in wedding cakes. Several different cake flavors are available for you to choose including some unique and seasonal ones (Grand Marnier, French Rum Raspberry + many more). You can view the list online. Inside the store is an album of wedding cakes or they'll custom design one for you. UC is very busy, especially at lunch time but they do a good job of taking orders and getting everyone through. Prices are on point with other establishments in the area and reasonable for homemade products. The seating area has been expanded and accommodates many more than it used to. You can also dine outdoors if you wish. I will return when I'm in the area and recommend their yummy goodies to others. read more
