The cashier at 10:30am on October 21 was rude and disrespectful to my pregnant daughter who's in the military. The cashier begrudgingly gave a military discount but would not stamp her loyalty card; whereas the Pearl Highlands store offers both the military discount and gladly stamps her loyalty card. This place is like an ice cream shop when they ask you, "Cup or cone"? In this case, it's "roll or a bowl"?! I was thinking that my sushi roll would be in a tortilla... No - it's wrapped in nori (seaweed)! Yayyy! It's like a large hand roll or like maki sushi, but not cut up into slices. Other people have described it as a sushi burrito. .. maybe. ..but that's how I got confused and thought it would have a tortilla wrap! Hahaha! This is a pretty cool place on the corner of Halekauwila and Keawe streets! It's well lit with natural lighting even though the walls are concrete! It's contemporary - like a warehouse style where you look up and see the pipes. It's casual and has a calm feeling! PARKING: I was lucky to find FREE street parking on Keawe Street. There are metered spaces in the neighborhood or you can park in the building for about $1.50 per hour. SERVICE: welcoming and helpful, especially since there's a different system - get a marker and an erasable order form. Indicate your selections and customize your meal! FOOD: I got the "Sexy Salmon". I don't know anything about the name, but it was fresh, tasty, beautiful, and filling! It consisted of fresh salmon, cucumber, takuwon, sprouts, lemon sauce, and cream cheese sauce. I chose to add all of the free toppings: Fried garlic, fried onion, sweet onion, carrot, and lettuce. YUM! Guilt-free eating! I've been pigged out, Thai-ed up, swirled about, dipped in and now...Up Rolled! Thanks to reviews from fellow Yelp friends, Emi H, Alina S, Elisha P and Vince B, we finally made our way to Up Roll Café. Oh, at this writing, I know that Nadine C and Daniel C were just here today, too. I will admit that it was Vince B's review that was the big nudge, er, more like PUSH for us to try this unusual cafe. Where is Up Roll Café? We readily found it at the corner of Pohukaina and Halekauwila Streets in the Kaka'ako neighborhood. It's actually on the street level of Halekauwila Place, a new affordable rental apartment building. There is a public parking lot available where the rates are $0.75/half hour up to first 2 hours and $3 evenings/weekends. Or you may find metered street parking that runs $0.25/20 minutes. Well, we lucked out and managed to get a parking space right in front of the café. As soon as we walked in, we were immediately greeted with friendly "Aloha" where one of the workers was "building" a couple of their signature sushi burritos. We then rounded the counter to the back wall where a petite female staffer came out to politely guide us to the ordering process that shown on the wall. Easy peasy...we grabbed a couple of plastic-laminated order cards and erasable markers to make our choices and then headed to the cashier. The order cards provides you with a description of their basic "Up Rolls" aka sushi burritos and provides you choices to further customize the base. There is even a board that shows you HOW to eat your sushi burrito. So, what did we choose? -SEXY SALMON ROLL: Fresh raw salmon, cucumber, takuwan (沢庵 pickled daikon radish), sprouts, lemon sauce, cream cheese sauce. I chose white rice, spicy mayo and ALL toppings (lettuce, sweet onion, carrot, fried garlic and fried onion). $9.75 -INARI TOFU ROLL: Inari (fried tofu), tofu, takuwan, and edamame. My husband chose brown rice, added aioli mayo and all toppings (lettuce, sweet onion, carrot, fried garlic and fried onion). $8.50 -COCONUT MINT SODA: Served icy cold, this beverage was refreshing, with not too sweet coconut syrup flavor that was freshened by fresh mint leaves and had nice carbonation. $3.50 Surprise...my fried foods eating husband actually ordered a meatless item which I assured him was going to taste spectacular (thanks, Vince). We unrolled the foil wrapper to open into the deliciousness we were about to dive into when I noticed my husband was staring at my SEXY SALMON ROLL. Sheesh, it was like Right Said Fred was singing "I'm Too Sexy". So, I gave in and swapped a half of my roll for a half of his INARI TOFU ROLL. These sushi rolls are filling! As I finished just a half roll, I was getting full. I thought about saving the other half roll but decided that it wouldn't keep well so I stuffed myself. Yikes...food coma ensued. All, in all, the flavors and freshness of these rolls were on point. The service was friendly, attentive and quick. Even the ambiance was comfortable in this somewhat industrial looking space that is warmed by natural wood seating arrangements, shelves and chalkboard menus. Oishii!!! In Japanese, it can be written as 美味しい . The word Oishii (美味しい/おいしい) means "delicious" or "tasty" in English. Alternatively, the word Umai (旨い/うまい) can be used as same meaning as Oishii though its usage is more informal..........(that's what I got from Google, when I looked it up! Lol!) I think the best way to describe my dining experience with - Up Roll Cafe, is like I went to a Asian Mexican style cafe. Up Roll Cafe makes a hella of a roll that kinda looks like a burrito, but instead of Mexican ingredients, they used Asian ingredients to make that burrito looking roll. Does it make sense? So I met up with my friends - Lyla D, & Ed for lunch today, and I must say the rolls that they made here were very fresh & yummy! But as good as the rolls were, the company I had was even better! Oh, just an FYI about the metered street parking (cuz I did this today).............the metered street parking is $0.25 for 20 minutes, DO NOT try to feed the meter after reaching 1 hour, because the metered parking is 1 hour max!!! When I parked my car today, I was feeding the street meter, and when I got to 1 hour, I figured I needed a bit more time, so proceeded to throw in more quarters to the meter, only to find out that the meter was stuck at 1 hour. Of course the meter was happy to suck up all my quarters, but you will not get anymore time!!!! So lesson learned...............just watch your time gang...........feed the meter up to any hour, then when your time runs down, go back and re-feed the meter, otherwise you're gonna get ripped off (like me today). When I walked into Up Roll Cafe today, the place was packed! I must say, the decor of the restaurant was pretty nice, & modern looking. Very easy ordering process............. 1. Look at the wall menu for the items that they offer. 2, Grab one of the laminated menu & ink pens, then mark off what you want eat. 3. Go to the ordering counter to turn in your laminated menu, and pay for your food. 4. Look for an open table to sit. 5. When your order is ready, they will call you, and you just pick up your food. Easy peasy yeah? So upon scanning the menu today, I decided to get the Teriyaki Chicken Roll ($8.50) with Brown Rice, and my roll came with Takuwan, Green Onion, Edamame, & Teriyaki Sauce. Just for good measure, I added a Sesame Sauce to my roll too for an additional ($0.25). My Friends ordered the Sexy Salmon Roll, & the Inari Tofu Roll. What can I say about my Teriyaki Chicken Roll? Oishii!!! Love the fresh ingredients they used to make this delicious roll! I liked that they offered brown rice, salad, or Quinoa...........besides the standard white rice. The roll had a nice balanced mixture of starch, meat, & a little greens............just loved it! I also have to tell you, the roll was very easy to eat.........not messy at all, and it's a nice alternative to have this roll if you're just plain tired of eating a regular burrito! Although there is no table service (after you order your food, you get your own utensils, & napkins), the people here were friendly, and they certainly processed your order quickly. Space here is limited, as the restaurant is not too big. When I came here for lunch today, it was packed but lucky for us, after getting our waters & utensils.............a group just happen to leave, allowing us to secure a table. My lunch buddy suggested this place and I'm glad that she did. It's been a place I've wanted to try but haven't had a chance to go to yet. They serve sushi and coffee so what's not to like there? We decided to meet there so I went a little early to look for street parking. You can park in the building but I opted for street parking. Good thing I did because I found a stall right in front. This place can be hard to find if you don't know the building and can be easily passed. Good thing for navi and Google maps. There is currently construction in the area as a heads up. The restaurant is trendy and is always busy! We got there at noon and it was consistently busy the entire time we were there. Luckily my lunch buddy secured a table. There are also stools you can sit on in the back if all the tables are taken. When you enter, walk to the back toward the stools and counter seating to make your order. They have pens and a reusable sheets in a bucket that you create your order with. After you mark what you want, you stand in line for the cashier. They call your order by your name when it's ready. You can't beat something made to order. There are 7 menu items you can choose from along with different sauces and toppings. It can be made in a roll or in a bowl with rice or salad. I ordered the Ahi Lover in a roll with brown rice, spicy mayo and all the complimentary toppings. The roll was good with different levels of textures and flavors. You need to eat it strategically or it'll be a very messy lunch. Make sure to keep the paper wrapped around the roll as you eat it. Peel and eat to keep the bottom from exploding all over you. About a year ago, I remember seeing some video through social media about this restaurant in NYC with a machine making this over sized sushi roll aka "sushi burrito" and because I love sushi I wanted to try this right away. In LA, I could only find them being served via food trucks but I wanted to see this machine up close. Fortunately for me, my wife and I were going to Hawaii for a vacation and a friend said this restaurant, Up Roll Cafe should be on our list of places to hit up to experience the "sushi burrito." Parking: The restaurant is located in a mixed use building. We got there Friday night after 8pm so there was some street parking to be had. However, the area is still being gentrified so it's still a mix of gritty industrial with homeless camping out around the corner so if you're with a date and don't want to take the chance in a dark and sketchy stretch of street, you'll find that there's a brightly lit parking garage that's next to the restaurant that charges $.75 an hour or something nominal like that. Ambiance: Just one word to describe it, hipster. It's the kind of place where you can envision seeing some guy with dapper hair, a handlebar mustache or full beard wearing skinny jeans, a white undershirt with a plaid longsleeve and beanie even though temps are in the 80s, working on a script or poems with an old fashion typewriter only looking up occasionally to make sure nobody is making off on his his penny farthing bicycle parked outside. Naw, it's not that bad. Honestly it's got a nice and warm atmosphere during the evening and bright and cheerful during the day. I know, because I went there for dinner and then for lunch on our last free day in Oahu. Food: Very tasty and fresh! On the first time there for dinner, my wife and I shared a salmon and ahi roll. For our final lunch visit I had the ahi roll again and my wife got the bowl with pork.(Only get quinoa if you're getting the bowl. It doesn't bind well in the roll) They have a menu where you can customize your roll/bowl. Certain ingredients like avocado or tofu are extra. Everything is done on a reusable plastic menu so if you're like me and like to wash you hands before you eat, bring some hand sanitizer otherwise you'll have to get the keys to a restroom that's located outside and around the corner in the lobby of the apartment building of the mixed use space. Service: The servers and staff working there were friendly and welcomed us with a smile as we came in and thanked us as we left. Since this place is not really a sit down restaurant, so you couldn't ask for more. Overall: Highly recommended! This is my first time here and I am DEFINITELY coming back over and over and over again until I try every single thing on their menu. I first heard of this place when my friend kept checking in here (almost everyday) and I couldn't help but get really interested. Payday came and I knew the first place I wanted to spend my money (after textbooks of course #collegelife). The atmosphere is casual and gives off a hipster vibe. I don't see myself studying here but I'll definitely come here to hang out for a few hours with my friends. To order your roll you go in the back and pick up a laminated menu and a marker and follow the instructions on the wall. You have the option of putting it in a roll or bowl and take out or eat in. You check the kind of roll, base, sauce, and the kinds of toppings you want. There are already some free basic fillings like carrots and onions but there are some you have to pay a little extra for. Sprouts, tofu, cucumber, etc. are .25 cents each; avocado, kimchee, and natto, etc. are .75 cents each; and a few $1 toppings. After that you give your customized menu to the cashier and wait for your masterpiece to be born. I was really torn which one to get but I got the California Crab with all free fillings and kimchi and my friend got the Ahi Lover (I was originally going to order this but felt more like crab today), all free fillings except carrot and natto. We got really excited when we saw you could add natto to your roll because its not a very common ingredient at most sushi shops. OKAY THE FUN PART: THE TASTE. This burrito is big and they pre-cut it in half for easy eating (as any burrito should be). *edit because I finally found the best way to describe it* It's love at first bite, I swear. All the ingredients mix together fairly without overpowering the other. And I think I appreciated it even more because this burrito was personally made from what I felt like eating. My friend and I also took turns biting out of each others burritos and neither one disappointed. Overall, it's the perfect place for hanging out and satisfying your sushi/poke cravings. It's also located in ward/kakaako area so all the art on the walls really match up the vibe this place brings. They don't have their wifi password posted everywhere like most places so you'll have to ask for it. But their customer service is really nice. Since we made our rolls on our own we didn't have much interaction with the employees but they always greet their guests with a big hello (or konnichiwa since they speak Japanese) and also say thank you when you pick up your roll or leave the shop. These "burritos" are large sushi rolls made with proteins such as Ahi, Salmon, Inari (Tofu), Pork, and Chicken. Where to place your order is a little confusing, because from the entrance you'll walk right into the display case/prepping area. But go ahead and walk all the way in towards the opposite wall to: Step 1: Grab an order form and marker. Write your name at the top. Step 2: Choose a Roll or Bowl. Step 3: Choose your roll from the menu or the specials (if you want the special, write the letters "SP" on the order form). Step 4: Select your base such as white rice, brown rice, quinoa, or salad. Step 5: Choose your sauce and any additional toppings which are free (lettuce, sweet onion, carrot, fried garlic, or fried onion) Step 6: Take your order form to the counter and pay. Your name will be called. I decided to go with 'Today's Special' called the "Hamachi Jalapeño" with ginger dressing sauce on the side. Hamachi is the Japanese name for Yellowtail. The roll also included green onion, cucumber, takuwan (pickled radish) & poke sauce for $11.99. Wrapped up like a burrito in paper and sliced in half at an angle, the young chef provided me with a quick lesson on how to eat the roll. Simply tear the paper down half-way to keep the contents from falling apart and from your fingers getting saucy. Right on! He proceeded to wrap it further in foil and brown bagged it for me to take back to the office. I carefully unwrapped my roll to take the first bite. The contents held up well and my tastebuds were ignited. So fresh, delicious, and what a great concept! I've never had this on the mainland, so I can only compare the price and value to a standard sushi roll. Ya know, I think this is really going to be a hit! As I mentioned in the beginning, Up Roll Cafe also specializes in coffee. I ended up ordering their black iced tea, but did check out the rest of the menu. Their signature drink is "Butter Coffee" and it's only served hot. Instead of cream & sugar, they use grass fed butter. Hmmm, different, but I'd be willing to give it a try! Came here today on my lunch break at work. It's a quick and easy bite to eat that I usually don't regret eating afterwards. Service- it was a bit busy when we arrived (around 12:15pm) so it took a bit longer to get our food but it was still relatively speedy! Food- I had the Ahi Lover sushirito and I added spicy mayo to it. It was pretty good except I felt like it was missing some sauce to it. I could've added an extra sauce but they charge extra for that Instagram worthy- definitely appealing to the eye!!! Would I add it to my go to list? It definitely is on my go to list but it is definitely a splurge. I can't be coming here for lunch every week! Overall it was delicious and I would definitely come back but it is not a place I would go regularly just because of the price and that's the only reason I can't give it 5 stars :/. As a side note, the first time I came I did the ahi lover and added crab salad and split that with a friend because it was double the meat and less rice. I like this little sushi joint hiding on Halekauwila Street. The staff is really friendly, and you get to watch them craft your gigantic sushiritto! They honestly seem like they really enjoy what they're doing, and they seem to know many of the customers breezing through. Or, at least, they greet them like they do (which is also a plus). There's not a lot of seating but they make use of the space they have, which is fine with me. Do what ya can do, right? I also love their hip vibe, through their use of chalkboards + art, and their shelf of locally made goodies you can buy. They have a lot to offer, from sushi to drinks, to sweets and treats-- all for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I can't wait to go back to try more! They have cool items on their menu I'm really interested in trying, such as the "kinako latte" and the "condensed milk gelato", alongside their other sushirittos and sushi bowls. I was very disappointed with my visit to Up Roll. Let me be straight with you, the spicy ahi is junk. On this visit we ordered two bowls, both with double meat. The miso pork was tasty and the amount of pork (with the double order) was satisfying. The ahi in the spicy ahi bowl was cut poorly. The pieces of ahi were mostly too big and contained that white stringy stuff that should be removed when cutting the fish. The quantity of fish with the spicy ahi bowl was sad. It made me wonder if they had mistakenly not given me the double meat, or even given me a half meat amount. Either way, I strongly do not recommend the spicy ahi bowl. Uhm parking... not too sure how the parking situation is bc we got lucky enough to get that last street parking right in front of the place. We looked very confused so the nice counter lady helped us out. They give you a dry erase paper so you can check off everything you want. You can get it as a sushi burrito or a sushi bowl. We got the sushi burrito. 1 spicy ahi & 1 crab. These things are HUGE! I got full off half of my roll. The quality was pretty good, I must say. This place can be a great gem in the developing Kakaako area.. You really feel like you are a nice industrialized modern décor. The first thing that I noticed were the ceiling fans and lights. They help bring a modern touch to the place. Ordering your food is fun because you get a cool fluorescent pen to mark up the menu. The menu can seem to be overwhelming at first but just remember that you are ordering straight across. Your salad or roll looks pretty huge. I had the ahi salad with sweet corn and the ginger dressing. It was a very odd combination but surprisingly worked out. Two visits in a week. What more do I have to say? I love love absolutely love this place. I know, I know. How could I be in love after my first meeting? First time, I shared a sushi roll with my friend and then ordered a frozen plantation iced tea to end my visit. The second time, I had my own roll. All by myself. I was hungry. Super hungry after an hour of zumba. Both times, I had the Ahi Lover Roll. It's the best. I add fried onion, fried garlic, and some lettuce for some freshness. I ordered mine with spicy aioli dressing. Sigh. Yums! Every bite was amazing. Spiciness, crispiness from the fried onions and crunchiness from the fresh lettuce. Wow I am so impressed with my experience today! I've been searching for a burrito place in Hawaii, and I couldn't believe they didn't have hardly any locations, back at home in Utah I was obsessed with them, I saw that Up Roll opened and I was excited. A sushi burrito is seriously the perfect meal, I know it sounds like a awful fad, but it's addicting once you have it, when you want that perfect food for on the go, you basically get a jumbo hand roll of your favorite sushi. I decided to try the vegan Inari Tofu roll option today, I know they can usually be bland and tasteless so I really wanted to put them to the test and see if it was worth the quality. I ordered it with all free toppings and added avocado for an extra .75 cents, my sushi burrito came out to about $10, which can be a bit steep. I was handed my burrito at the pickup and I couldn't believe how heavy it was, hoping I got my money's worth I unwrapped and was surprised to see the huge amount of toppings, the taste was excellent the Inari added flavor, the yellow pickle was diced up and gave a perfect crunch and saltiness, the fried garlic inside was A+, the roll was so good I didn't even need to add any sauce or sriracha to it, although they do have vegan sauce if you like. On the corner of Halekauwila and Keawe in Kakaako, Up Roll Cafe is a chill coffee place serving savory meats and fish in customizable rolls or bowls. Chill, as in jazzy music from Pandora - maybe a Dixieland jazz classic like Basin Street Blues by Duke Ellington - with nice a/c on a hot no trade wind day or doors open with al fresco patio dining on a breezy day. Other days you might've treated to a gaggle of Japanese mommies with their very young kids. The formerly blank black walls have been nicely filled in by chalk art. There is a beautiful tree chalked out in the back that wouldn't look out of place in The Shire. Yes, coffee. Even though the food chalkboard menu is the first thing you will see when you enter, the coffee here is good. The wife serves nice lattes with medium roasted espresso, usually sourced from Central or South America, drawn from a Nuova Simonelli machine. There are bags of varietals for sale if it interests you. For something different, try her Condensed Milk Gelato Affogato. The hot slightly bitter coffee taste and cold, sweet, creamy condensed milk melt down in to a mini adult milkshake. And I haven't had a better tea latte made with roasted kinako - with the added plus of one if her latte art hearts. I'm not a burrito eater so I consider unwrapping the roll versions to consume along with a bag of Boulder Canyon chips a waste of energy but I like the bowls a lot. First of all, they treat rice with respect. You don't get mashed wet scooped rice. Second, they have a thing for adding canned corn - very Japanese - which I personally enjoy. Last, the different dressing are too tasty to end up dripping down your hand - they belong in a bowl where the rice, quinoa, or greens can absorb every drop. The ground miso pork is reasonably priced at $8.50 and is really tasty mixed in the rice with all the extras. If you want to spend a couple of dollars more then go with salmon or ahi. Up Roll is a husband and wife operation so don't walk in impatient. You'll have a nice experience if you're not in a rush and take the time to enjoy the music, the other customers, and the food. read more

Five star service. I was starving and had limited time and energy to peruse the menu. I was greeted immediately upon walking in. the lady at the cashier was so helpful and patient in helping me choose something DELICIOUS. She could quickly tell it was my first time at their cafe and was very accommodating and knowledgeable when I mentioned my dietary preferences. The eating areas are socially distanced, appeared clean and tidy so I felt comfortable staying and eating (this review was made during COVID pandemic). Food, service, environment, atmosphere and quality are all great and well worth the price. Come visit them next time you're in the area! I am definitely coming back again. It's pretty much what it sounds like--a large roll made of sushi rice, raw fish filling and wrapped in nori. Who doesn't want a burrito sized sushi roll?! Maybe people who don't like sushi...but those people are crazy people. Just kidding, Up Roll has chicken and pork options to satisfy people who don't like ahi or salmon poke You start by choosing one of their rolls: chicken, ahi, salmon or miso pork. Each one comes with a unique blend of sauces and veggies including sprouts, corn, cucumber or takuan . I like that you can add complimentary filings like lettuce, onion and extra sauce. I've had the ahi, chicken and salmon rolls and have enjoyed the flavors that make each unique. Apparently the miso pork is the most popular, so I'll have to try that next time. They also serve great espresso and tea beverages. On my last visit, I tried the yuzu jelly drink with tea. I love yuzu, and this was a very refreshing and textural beverage that accompanied my roll nicely. I tried a sip of the matcha latte. I wouldn't recommend the matcha if you have a sweet tooth, it's not like the Starbucks kind that tastes like ice cream.... Lol The ambiance is very hipster and modern, complete with chalk drawings on the walls. The staff is very friendly, too. I've always been lucky enough to find street parking, but I believe you can park in the private lot, too. I will be back for the miso pork roll and more yuzu jelly! They also have Friday-only specials, such as the ramen sushi (have yet to try that) and the tiramisu (which was bomb, had cream cheese and espresso). I've had the chicken aioli roll, the salmon roll, salmon ceviche salad, and the Teri chicken roll. Teri chicken roll was best, by far. The others are very good too, but I really liked the Teri chicken. Another tip, I think the bowl either had more in it than the roll or at least looks like more. This place is solid. Up Roll is a cute little cafe located in the Kakaako area. You can tell it's totally owned by Japanese cause everything is just so cute & eclectic! Their rolls are like a sushi roll & burrito combined. You have the option of having white rice, brown rice or quinoa in your rolls or you can have it in a salad bowl. I actually wanted a roll with salad instead of rice. They had no problem doing that and my chicken aioli roll was perfect! It may not seem big but I swear I was stuffed! Just beware when you eat your rolls, don't take the wrapper thingy off because it's easy for everything to come out. The rolls are reasonably priced and they put a ton of stuff inside your roll. So far I've been pleased with the chicken aoli & miso pork roll. I forgot to add, you can add natto for 75 cents more. Natto makes everything better :) They have coffee & jelly drinks. I love kinako so of course I just had to try their kinako latte. I will say it taste just like kinako but it was a little too much for me so I had to add honey to it. Made it taste a lot better. I've been to Up Roll twice and have not been impressed. The first time I came I ordered a bowl. The bowl was not completely filled and I paid nearly $15 for this mess. I despise expensive hipster type restaurants that are cheap with portion sizes. On my second visit, I stopped by to give the rolls a try. As you can see from my photo, I found a BONE in my roll. I assumed it must have been from the chicken - I guess the cook tears up a rotisserie chicken to use in her dishes. The food is alright. The restaurant is very typical for Kakaako standards these days. Hipster, "trendy", and mediocre expensive food. I doubt I'll be back here anytime soon. read more

There's laminated menus with markers on the right side of the counter so you just pick one of each up and fill it out according to what you want ^_^ 2. Walk around the counter and the cashier is on your left side. Give them the menu and VOILA you pay The wait took a longer than we expected it to be but the ambience was cute so it somewhat lifts up your mood lol plus when your food comes out, all those negative thoughts will go bye bye. It's already sliced into two for you so you and a buddy can easily share without the hassle of ugly messy cutting x) there's also complimentary water by the cashier and some toys for kids to play I tried the ahi lover and the salmon roll. Honestly both were excellent! They give a good amount of fish and toppings so I definitely approve the ratio! Uproll Cafe is finally open at Pearlhighlands! Thank you Jesus! I'm so happy because now I don't have to drive all the way to town to get my fix. They're located in the Pearlhighlands food court. As you walk in the door, they'll be on the left side all the way to the back. I believe next to Teapresso. I asked if they had any specials and was advised they didn't have any right now so just whatever's on the menu. So if you've never been to Uproll Cafe what you need to do is grab a menu and a pen and mark off weather you want a burrito or salad and also mark off everything you want included in it. Then you go up to cashier and hand to them and you're done! Now all you do is pay and wait for them to call your name and it's time to indulge in yummy ono goodness! I usually like to order the SEXY SALMON with brown rice and I get the works and also add natto, spicy masago, and daikon. You'll love this place! You won't be sorry! A great alternative to your traditional sushi roll! I've been minimizing my carbs, so the fact that I could get a sushi roll with salad instead of rice intrigued me. This location must be fairly new since it's pretty clean inside. You order from the back of the restaurant, by getting a laminated card and indicating what you want, then paying at the cashier. They have self serve water. Parking is either on the street (which can be limited), or you have to park in the Halekauwila building, which the restaurant is in. Tips: Eat the roll right away. If you refrigerate it, the nori. becomes soggy/chewy so it's not as good. Also, get extra sauce, it's better! The only feedback I have is for them to cut the Takuan in bigger pieces. They cut it really small and it ends up falling out of the roll. read more

I had been here a few months ago for coffee. I stopped in and ordered two different types of ahi bowls and lemonade. The rice was leftover (according to our Japanese palate), the ahi pieces were few and not completely fresh, and the ginger dressing overwhelming. The lemonade was colorful but had a slightly old/turned lemon taste. I will probably not return for the bowls or food, but I have always liked their other drinks. For the $30 total I could have gone somewhere else and been quite happy. I had the feeling like the place just did not care enough to make sure their rice was excellent and fish super tasty. I got the spicy tuna ahi bowl which was the special of the day. It came with the spicy ahi, cucumber, takuan, spicy masago, jalapeño, green onions, crispy garlic and onions, and a few other things. I especially like the crunchiness of the garlic and onions. It offered a nice texture contrast to the rice and ahi. The flavors were ready good. It worked well together. I like to mix my bowl up so there's all the ingredients in every bite. The price isn't that bad. But I would have liked to have a little more rice and ahi. This is a really good place for lunch. We got the roll before to try and it was delicious. I feel like you might get a little more in the bowl though cause they're not trying to roll it all up tight. The sexy salmon is really good. I like the ahi lover bowl though. I get aioli sauce with it and sometimes add avocado. It's really good cause you can customize whatever you want on it. This year has brought several changes for me personally and professionally, some good, some great and some who knows, but on the work front getting a work wife appears to be just what the doctor ordered after losing my work husband to Maui and his actual wife and family. My work wife and I decided to give Up Roll Cafe a try during one of our "road dog" days and both absolutely loved our meals and the concept. I had Up Roll Cafe bookmarked for quite sometime, but haven't ever had the chance to make it over despite the positive reviews and rampant food porn. We wandered in for lunch one weekday and I have to admit the place is worth the hype. The concept is relatively simple, you can create your own roll or bowl or order one off their menu, but fear not....even if ordering off the menu, you're still able to customize to your liking by adding or removing ingredients, choosing your rice or picking quinoa and your sauces. The size of the rolls especially is well worth the price since instead of being the size of the average sushi roll, it was the size of a burrito and I ended up taking the second half to go. My coworker got the Ahi Lovers as a bowl and I got it as a roll. We both added avocado and I chose spicy mayo. Her only gripe with the bowl was the fact that the ahi wasn't all cut properly and she had some huge bites. Other than that we were both happy customers and would definitely go back happily. Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood!" - Cat Stevens I was in the neighborhood and decided to give URC another try. Note: My first experience wasn't very pleasant as far as the food quality of my Ahi Lover's Roll was concerned. I was wicked excited as I remember my Ahi Lovers' Roll being tasty albeit bloody... I was determined to see whether my first visit was just a fluke. I decided to order a few items to see whether URC would be some place I would come back to again. I ordered the following: -Up Roll Ramen -Ahi Lover's Roll -Affogato Up Roll Ramen - $13. (4 stars). "Scallions, Ajitama (Egg), Kikurage (Pepeiau {Wood Ear} Mushrooms), & Pork." This bowl was very deceiving! I thought the bowl looked small but when I started diving into the ramen, I was surprised to find out that this bowl actually holds A LOT of food. The slightly chewy Pepeiau mushrooms and crisp freshly chopped scallions gave this bowl of ramen a wonderful textural background with a rich porky broth that made me squeal and OINK continuously!! Slurping up this bowl of ramen was tough, but hey, someone's got to do the dirty work!! I'm not a huge fan of Ajitama (or eggs at this CURRENT moment) but nonetheless, the breaking of the egg yolk does add another layer of richness while giving the broth a silky and flavorful undertone. The noodles were cooked al dente which added a chewy texture I enjoyed! It seemed like there was an endless amount of noodles AND broth in this Ramen bowl!!?? I'm not complaining, I was just surprised. :) This is the 2nd time I have been able to try the Ramen of the Month at URC and I have to say this is what I will come back for!! Tip: Every 4th Friday of the month, URC has a special Ramen bowl available! Definitely order this (whatever the special is)!! Ahi Lover's Roll - $10.95. (3.5 stars). Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that while the flavors are still tasty, unless I decided to get this Roll with rice *shudder*... I'll never enjoy this Roll to its fullest potential! At URC, one has an option of getting their Roll as a salad (aka vegetables instead of rice) with, in this case, Ahi. The problem that I have is that the vegetables, while fresh and delicious, are still drenched in water!!! This causes a big problem when the water contacts the nori and makes the once crispy nori limp and mushy. I have tried to get my brain to order this Roll with rice, but alas, I'm a weird Asian... I prefer potatoes over rice!! I can't blame URC for my inability to enjoy this sushi roll as it was intended. I can only say I will stop forcing myself to conform to having rice in my roll! LOL. It's still a tasty sushi, I just can't handle the "wetness"... ;) Affogato - $5.95. (4.5 stars). The presentation. The excitement. The first sip. The foodgasm. The aftermath! Oh how I have come to love this drink over the years! I was so excited to find out URC serves Affogato that I blurted it out to the cashier without first acknowledging her presence... OOPS. Where are my manners?! After my excitement subsided, the anxiety and sadness started to set. I had received all my food, but still no Affogato!!?? Had the cashier not charged me? Had she forgotten I was supposed to receive my happy drink? As I sat and contemplated the sadness I was about to endure... I slowly walked up to the cashier, and in a very defeated voice, politely asked if I was charged for my Affogato. The cashier had a huge smile on her face and said, "YES, we will bring it out to you now." Oh-Em-Gee. I swear my facial expression changed in a heartbeat! I almost SKIPPED back to my table!! Tip: Affogato is a "dessert" drink. Order it at the same time you order your meal, just don't forget to ask for it before you leave!! :) Love this drink! URC's version is just as good as Kona Coffee Purveyors in my humble opinion! --- All in all, I will be back to URC on Ramen of the Month Fridays as I seem to enjoy this "special" and the Affogato the most. #WhoDaThunkIt??
