I have used unovon service for more than 8 years. As long as the service works, it is fine. Call quality is ok. Nothing to complain about.
But my problems started when i wanted to port my number to another carrier from Unovon. I didn't realize I was in for a very long frustrating, disappointing ordeal with the company.
I wanted to port my number from Unovon to Redpocket.com. Provided all the details to Redpocket and they asked me to call after a few days. But the porting request didn't go through even after a few days.
* The reps at Redpocket suggested me to open a new request and close the old one. So, we did that. It also didn't work.
* Now they tell me that the account number/pin are wrong. So, i setup a conf call between Redpocket/Unovon reps to confirm those are correct.
* The request still did not go through. Redpocket rep say that they are not receiving any reply from Unovon for their number porting request. So, i setup one more conf call. Here the Unovon rep ask for "Porting Order Number" from Redpocket. Redpocket has no clue about this number.
* Redpocket kept assuring me that they will port the number and ask me to be patient.
* Redpocket escaletes this case and that makes absolutely no difference.
* Every time i called them to get a status, a new rep picks up the call and all he would tell me is "Sir, the Request did not go through, So, let us Close the request and Open a new one"
It was getting really difficult for me to explain them all that has been done so far, as the reps won't believe me and they just want to open a new request and be done with my call. After some 15-20 days, i decided to give up as there was no progress at all.
After a year, i thought why not try the number porting one more time. This time I tried from Ultra mobile. I had exactly the same experience as that of Redpocket. I did everything including setting up a conf call between Ultramobile and Unovon reps. The Ultra mobile rep atleast did not give me false hope. After more than 10 days, he said, he has no clue what to do.
This time in the conf call, the Unovon rep said, the Porting Order number can be obtained from Ultra mobile's underlying carrier Tmobile. But Ultramobile rep was reluctant to do that and so i had to give up this time as well.
I thought if the Porting Number can be provided by Tmobile, why not try to port the number to Tmobile itself. So, i tried my luck one more time. Placed my request on Sep 8. We ran into the same kind of problems (porting requests getting no where). T-mobile had to submit the porting request multiple times. Since i knew by now that Unovon would ask for the Porting Order number, i thought i would contact Tmobile to get it. But to my surprise, the t-mobile customer support reps also had no clue what this number is. I felt totally stuck.
Didn't know what to do for a few days. Then, one day when I called t-mobile customer support, they transferred me to porting department, then to their landline porting department, then eventually to their "Customer Resolution" department. The Customer Resolution department contacted Unvon rep and finally was able to provide the Porting Order Number. I felt so relieved. I thought things would be smooth from now. But there were more things to come.
I had to call Unovon almost everyday to get things moving on their side.
Unovon's underlying carrier is BBCom, a company based in Los Angeles. The only way the Unovon reps communicate with BBCom is through emails. So, when ever i asked for status, all they could tell me was, they have sent their email to BBCom and awaiting their reply. They were not able to provide a answer when the number would be released, when they would process the request and how long would that take. If i pressed them a little more to get details, they would just hang up, or tell me they will call me back or tell me they have no access to these requests. Why can't they just pick up the phone and contact BBCom and get me a clear answer! They kept telling me that is not their protocol. All they can do is just send email and wait for the reply.
The next day they would say that i need to send an email to their support asking them to release the number. I did that too.
The next time, one person in their porting dept said that he is seeing so many porting requests for my number and that is causing problem. I realized that they in fact have access to all the porting requests, inspite of telling me otherwise.
After so many follow up calls, my number is finally transferred to t-mobile on Sep 22nd.
Story didn't end here. Unovon still charged my credit card after my number is ported. When i called them they said that, "Sir, there is no way for us to know if your number is ported or not. So, you have to call us after your number porting is done". This shows how much disconnect Unovon has with it's underlying carrier. I called BBCom directly and in 10 seconds they confirmed me that my number porting is complete. read more
