This is not Sacramento, people it's beautiful rural-ish Redding so adjust your expectations accordingly and you'll have a great experience. Having said that, this place is a gem for so many delicious reasons: 1) the most fresh and highest variety and stock of Asian vegetables in all of Redding are to be found here. Come first thing on the weekends to get first pick - they drive from Stockton and some of these vegetables are farm fresh. 2) I found unique ingredients and vegetables that you can't find even in SF chinatown - for example tiny (marble-sized) bitter eggplant that is a southeast Asian delicacy ... cook with chicken for a healthy and cholesterol-lowering meal 3) lots of spices and ingredients that represent most of Asia: Chinese, Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, Thai, Japanese, Philippine...something for everyone. 4) they carry some gourmet items as well as classical brands (for example the fish sauce they stocked was the highest quality I've ever used- but they also carry the comfort brands that everyone recognizes (such as Lee Kum Kee) 5) the quality of the produce deserves a second mention - I bought an entire bag of rambutans from here because they were so beautiful - definitely the freshest I had seen even in SF Chinatown or Sacramento. When I tasted the first one it was literally just as fresh as having picked it off the tree! All the subtle flavors, all the sweetness, the full juiciness, and plump textures that are lost in transport...oh it was heaven to eat those fresh and ripe rambutans, still enjoying them even though they are long eaten lol 6) the most beautiful eggs in all of Redding can be found here: these are eggs from local chickens. They taste better than any of the most expensive eggs you can buy at Whole Foods. I love how some are large and brown, others are smaller and speckled. More nutritious and tasty. The hens stop laying as many in the winter, but look for them when the weather is warmer. The owner Bee and his lovely wife take pride in this little market and it shows! I had visited Carillos Mexican Store because i couldnt find any normal chorizo that wasnt soy from any of the markets here in redding. So when i came across this establishment of course i was giddy with excitement as being from southern california there is no shortage of mexican markets out there. So naturally i was a feeling the blues when i transferred and move up here for work along every single of my co-workers recommendation on where the best authentic al-pastor is, well then youre kinda talking to yourself into thinking soyrizo cant be that bad can it? but thats not the point im trying to make here. What i am trying to point out is that i totally forgot the date of visit so this is pretty much a flashback dream review from memory and yeah you know what this store may not be as pretty or have the traditional décor that you normally see in Santa Ana or Los Angeles, but its intimate enough for one to get know the owner or staff members which is always a plus for youre looking something in particular and the way to get it is through a mexican markets connections, dont believe give it a try see how it works out. Carillos Mexican Store may not be the vision of what everyone assumes or thinks what a mexican store should be but thats ok because in there you find the big can of menudo or every single ingredient youll need to make it yourself, they may not have the widest collection of household cleaning supplies but at least one bottle of fabuloso will suffice and just because safeway say that their coca-cola is authentic doesnt mean it was made with pure cane sugar like the ones they have down past the mexican border and just like the ones youll see displayed and ready for purchase at Carillos Mexican Store. Now being that im from southern california i will admit that when it comes to buying meats and chicken to cook on or off the grill. i am spoiled i can either go around the corner for some bomb tacos or i can drive to wherever and purchase the best al-pastor, in my opinion of course, and just be happy for the rest of my life. So when i saw the carniceria section i will admit, it wasnt what i was expecting, but the choices werent bad either and even though the dispaly for the meats counter looked like something out the texas massacre's gas station store display case, i didnt hesitate to pick up the seasoned chick and 2 pounds of chorizo, and with all the other little snacks and hair care product (moco de gorilla) i walked out of there not only with 4 bags worth of groceries but with a sense of comfort now knowing that if i ever need my fix of pulparindo's or japanese style peanuts i dont have to drive 7.5 hrs away to manifest it.. Finally i can only tell you how i felt and the experience that i had received when i had purchased from Carillos Mexican Store. The only thing i can suggest if you decide to visit is keep an open mind, its not gonna be all of mexico in there but im sure youll find that little mexican dish for tonights dinner or the saturday night bbq with friends or the neighbor. .

I hate when I walk into a store and none of the items are on the shelf that you were looking for. This location does not have that problem at all. Every time I go in to this location it really is an easy place to shop. I try to go here as often as possible. I got here instead of Walmart and target in some of the bigger department stores just because it is a little smaller and much easier to find the things that you need. This place is very clean as well. I hate when I go into a store and everything is super dirty. This location does not have that problem at all. The staff is very helpful and they will assist you with everything that you need. All in all this location definitely gets four stars for me. I would give it five stars but the only issue we did have is the parking. There are always so many cars in the parking lot sometimes it makes it a little bit difficult to park. I feel comfortable with the easy-going jokes and smiles by each one of the employees, and they seem to really know and connect with their customers. If you go a few times, they remember you and greet you like family! The last time I went, the woman behind the counter was explaining an incident that happened just down the street where she had gone out of her way to save a dog trapped in someone's truck, and she kept going outside to check on the dog until Animal Control came. They keep their eyes out on their surroundings and really value each individual. I love them and am happy to have found it!
