This is the best Asian market in Redding hands down! Owned by a lovely young couple with two cute and energetic toddlers. This is not 99 Ranch or SF market. This is not Sacramento, people it's beautiful rural-ish Redding so adjust your expectations accordingly and you'll have a great experience. Having said that, this place is a gem for so many delicious reasons: 1) the most fresh and highest variety and stock of Asian vegetables in all of Redding are to be found here. Come first thing on the weekends to get first pick - they drive from Stockton and some of these vegetables are farm fresh. 2) I found unique ingredients and vegetables that you can't find even in SF chinatown - for example tiny (marble-sized) bitter eggplant that is a southeast Asian delicacy ... cook with chicken for a healthy and cholesterol-lowering meal 3) lots of spices and ingredients that represent most of Asia: Chinese, Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, Thai, Japanese, Philippine...something for everyone. 4) they carry some gourmet items as well as classical brands (for example the fish sauce they stocked was the highest quality I've ever used- but they also carry the comfort brands that everyone recognizes (such as Lee Kum Kee) 5) the quality of the produce deserves a second mention - I bought an entire bag of rambutans from here because they were so beautiful - definitely the freshest I had seen even in SF Chinatown or Sacramento. When I tasted the first one it was literally just as fresh as having picked it off the tree! All the subtle flavors, all the sweetness, the full juiciness, and plump textures that are lost in transport...oh it was heaven to eat those fresh and ripe rambutans, still enjoying them even though they are long eaten lol 6) the most beautiful eggs in all of Redding can be found here: these are eggs from local chickens. They taste better than any of the most expensive eggs you can buy at Whole Foods. I love how some are large and brown, others are smaller and speckled. More nutritious and tasty. The hens stop laying as many in the winter, but look for them when the weather is warmer. The owner Bee and his lovely wife take pride in this little market and it shows! Small market but has most of what I need for cooking. I love their fresh and reasonable price of produce. I had shop at another oriental market in town but their price for fresh herbs was shocking comparing to Lao Market. The owners are nice, very helpful and accommodating. Five stars for customer service, great fresh ingredients, and more customer service! I went in to gather ingredients to try a few Thai recipes for the first time, and I was so pleasantly surprised. I had a cookbook and read off the list of ingredients and the lady working (owner?) ran around and showed me where everything was, helped me learn how to pronounce the items, and how to use them and store them, and which were most commonly used amongst authentic Thai cooks. Just went into this place earlier today in search of Okra. Happy to report they did have it, so far the *only* place in town I've found that does! :\ Anyway, I visitied the thai grocer on Hartnell afterward and was not as impressed. This place was bigger, had more, seemed friendlier, and didn't smell too bad at all either (the other place was just a little weirder smelling.) Honestly though, other than that I don't know what to say, I have no idea what most the stuff in the store would ever be used for, but it was interesting to look around, and I know where to get a couple odd items I might want now too :) read more

Sorry, but this place wasn't impressive at all. Pros: Some unique canned food/sauces. Nice looking vegetables. Cons: Clerk and her brother/boyfriend/whatever argued much of the time. Very limited selection, no meat or fish. Dumplings are the same brands carried at Raley's. Sorry, no need to go back here for me. I was hoping it would be a small version of Zion or 99Ranch, not even close. read more

I'm not real familiar with Asian spices but I do like shopping at the local market the people are always friendly if you're elderly or disabled Dell carry out your big bags of rice for you they always have shelf after shelf after shelf a good sauce and good spices along with utensils you can cook in and as I said the staffer always courteous I believe their family owned how they treat their customers really well storage self is a little cluttered but that's because they offer a lot of stuff Seafood Dry Goods spices Galore at least 10 different kinds of rice I would recommend the Lao Market to anybody Asian and non-asian alike read more

I came into this store around 11 am Friday, 7th...looking for Garachgaru, a Korean spice for kimche..there was some guy in there, hoodie, phone in hand, turning away from me. I tried to get his attention, he turned away.. never found my spice, just walked out. Kind of like a slap in the face when you walk into any business and get treated like that. read more

Been coming to Lao Market every summer since we began camping at Whiskeytown about 8 years ago. You can find all the Asian spices, sauces, canned delicacies if you decide to cook Asian food at camping. They even have a few camping supplies we needed. Word on the street is that the owner drives up fresh produce from Oakland/SF Chinatowns in the wee hours of the morning - so that you can enjoy fresh gai-lan and bitter mellon tonight. They have shirataki noodles, lap cheong, a variety of chili pastes and tofus, and even banana leaves. I came all the way from sacramento to buy eggs from store. The owner was very nice and showed great hospitality towards visitors. They have lots of fresh foods and Lao sausage. I would recommend stopping by to get your Thai tea and coffee. Prices were reasonable and the shop keep is very knowledgable of the local area. Thumbs up. read more

I love this market! The kitchen is my happy place, and cooking is how I show people I love them. When I went into the Lao Market looking for the ingredients to make a very specific kind of unusual Southeast Asian dish for my family, the young woman came out from behind the counter and helped me find all the right ingredients, then went the extra mile giving me some great Thai Cooking 101 hints like: always balance fish sauce with equal amounts of sugar in a curry. The Lao Market has really helped me be a better, more authentic chef, and I will always shop there. read more

I think Kanya Market is bigger and has a better selection and possibly better prices, but if there's a Lao market within 10 miles of me at anytime, it is automatically going to be in my good graces. The ladies that run this place are sweet, too. A few highlights: Here, they have a good selection of hard to find fresh vegetables for lao/thai dishes like thai chilis, galangal (sp?) leaves, coriander, bamboo, asian eggplants, etc. I dont know the names of all of the things they have. They also sell a chopped green papaya along w/ the peppers and dressing to make your own papaya salad. To me the awesomest thing about this place is that they order baus from the Bay area and get them delivered every week. She told me they get them on saturday and sell them until they run out. You can even put in an order beforehand. Its a bit pricey (for baus) at approx $3 a piece, but hey, its not like I can drop in on my favorite chinese bakery in chinatown in sf whenever i please so I'm happy to pay the transportation costs. I had a very good BBQ chicken bau ( i bought all they had left for the week). It was big and fluffy and sweet. Clearly, I love baus. read more

My family and I recently decided to make our own spring rolls. After a few unsuccessful attempts to find rice paper, we were told to go to Lao Market by a friendly employee at Orchard Nutrition. The outside of the market certainly didn't look like anything special, and I was less than enthused about stopping there. Passing through the threshold of this shop is basically nothing short of magic. It's clean, the employees are friendly and the stuff they have inside is amazing! They have everything. So many items I had seen and planned to order online not only were in stock, but were also a lot cheaper. I could probably make a business for myself just reselling the items they stock. I spent well over a half hour pouring over the items they carry, and I'm sure I've only scratched the surface. I should be intimidated by the fact that some of the labels contain no English at all, and the ones that do don't always explain what exactly they are, but I'm not. This is because the staff is so friendly I would have no problem asking. :) They would be happy to help. They even gave us tips for our spring rolls, which turned out wonderful! Highlights: Housewares: Yes, they actually stock some smaller housewares. We purchased a 4 liter stainless steel kettle for only $8.99. I found the same kettle online for $14. It makes the most enchanting sound when the water is hot, it sounds like someone blowing gently into a harmonica. Gorgeous! Steamers, utensils, rice cookers... you name it. They have everything to outfit a kitchen for Asian cooking. Candy: The kids went crazy for the candy! They had candies we've seen online and elsewhere for much, much more priced so reasonably! Anything you've ever seen a character eat in an anime they have. Otaku heaven. The bubblegum we bought there was the best I've ever had. The "grape" flavor tastes just like a fresh wine grape, skin and all. Why doesn't American gum taste like this? Fresh Produce: Their produce is fresh. They had several vegetables I've never seen before. Tea: Tons of tea. Refrigerated beverages: Ramune, canned coffees... etc all kept cold. I will stop by the market for lunch one of these days. Mmm. Pastries and Sandwiches: We purchased two pastries during our visit. One was a sweet bun filled with red bean jam and the other was a coconut cream puff. The cream puff was delicious and tasted like creamy custard. The bean jam pastry tasted like a Hawaiian roll with sweet paste inside. It was really good. It was obvious that the filling was beans, but it didn't taste like beans at all. It was so much fun! I can't wait to try the other offerings they have. Personal Care: Shampoo, cleansers, soap... etc. They even have those whitening soaps they charge an arm and a leg for online. Because everything is cooler when you can't understand what it says on the label, I plan to purchase some. It's too fun. Sauces: Every Asian sauce in existence. Seriously. I'm sure this isn't all the market has to offer, but these are the things that really stood out to me during my first visit. I realize that I am very fortunate to have such a well stocked Asian market where I live, when others have to resort to the internet. Would give them 4 stars except their produce selection was mostly rotten, overly wet and not displayed well. I hate when an asian market does not display prices for/on everything. Makes you feel like they can change the price depending on who is buying... They have a large dried foods section with noodles etc but that too was sort of messy and not presented well. I had to ask to find a couple items that were hidden and out of stock. It is also not great that when they ring you up every item says the same thing and the cashier punches the numbers super fast without moving the item into a bag. I had to count how many items I had to correlate with the receipt. I will give them another chance to see if there is any improvement. read more

This grocery store is terrific! It has a wide variety of produce, spices, herbs, etc. found no place else in the Redding area. Their prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly and helpful.
