A great local spot in downtown Lawrenceville. Consistently good food and very friendly service. I love their salads for lunch.

The restaurant was really a breath of fresh air. Every body we met was very very friendly. We made some new friends. The food....cooked just like I asked. We had the Angus burger with fries and the talapia tacos with beer and h2o. Generous portions and such a comfortable atmosphere. Greeted imediattely and everybody spoke as they came past our table! I've been to UJoint twice this week and man, both times they just knocked it outta the park. Slow Older Bearded Guy Server wasn't there (slow as in pace, not as in "special"). Wed night they were slammed and I still got my food in a totally decent time. I ordered the chicken fingers basket and noticed it was way smaller than before which in all honest was really nice. It was a more appropriate serving and I really dug it. Yesterday; I was there for lunch and I was waited on by Elyse. She was hands down one the most pleasant servers I have ever had. She was so sweet, kept my water full and was really cool to talk to as well. My black bean burger was as epic as ever. Every time I have one I feel like my face is being made love to. The tots were kick ass as usual and again, I'm a huge fan. It's so great to have such awesome experiences at my favorite neighborhood joint. Keep it up y'all! read more

I was excited to try the Universal Joint because of all the good buzz about it. When the Atlanta People With Blogs Who Get Together To Drink (APWBWGTTD) decided to make this their next stop I was of course elated. Needless to say I had high expectations. We had a large group of people and it was a busy night. I would have liked to sit outdoors as it was a nice evening but we had way too many for that to work. The service was lackluster. I had their Spicy Egg Rolls which were exceptional. I went with their Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and it was alright. Just like their sister location, Flat Iron, the chicken isn't breaded. The chicken was a little dry and the sauce wasn't really spicy. Then I saw something that frighten me. Their last food safety rating was a 76! That is a C rating! A majority of the point deducted were for cleanliness (i.e. employees washing hands, clean floors, clean surfaces) but it still is no excuse. And the rating was done recently too. Hopefully they have addressed these issues by now. THE BOTTOM LINE -- This is a great place to sit, relax and do some people watching on their patio after a long day...but I wouldn't do much more than that. read more

The patio is big with plenty of tables and a lovely view of Oakhurst; you can even sit inside and enjoy the outdoors when they roll up the big garage-style doors. If you're a pet parent, you can have your furbaby join you on the patio. The service is slow, but everyone is friendly. The food is good, quality bar food: wings, burgers, etc. This isn't a place to go if you're in a hurry or want to impress someone. Order the spicy egg rolls; they're really extra-yummy! Starting with the most clever name for classic America fare in a transformed former service station, Universal Joint, is bright and sunny, filled with cheerful staff and regulars who know each other. It's been a while since I visited Universal Joint. There are so many other nearby choices. But the U Joint is worthy - it's a great neighborhood bar with solid bar food and a good vibe. Service has been just fine - better than fine, actually - every time I've stopped in. Not crazy loud. It's a good place for drinking' and jawin' with friends. Came here for a late dinner one Friday night a few weeks ago with a friend who lives in Decatur. I got a U Joint burger and she got a couple U Joint dogs. I know we were after the dinner rush and there wasn't a huge crowd there, but I was still really impressed at how fast the service was. The servings were huge and amazingly delicious. The jalepenos were a nice touch. We actually happened to come back a couple days later on Sunday as we were in the area from taking dogs to a nearby dog park with a bunch of friends. We sat on the far end of the patio tied our dogs to the railing. I didn't get anything this time, but was a little disappointed at the lack of attentiveness of our waiter, particularly in bringing water for the dogs. Wifey had the gyro and liked it alot. She took some home as it was pretty large. I had the bacon/cheddar burger and it was very good. Beer selection was satisfactory but had some good selections, just not a lot which was fine. We sat on the patio and even though the day had been hot, it was still nice enough to sit outside. There was a giant fan that stirred the air enough so we were not sweating (we would have eaten inside if that had been an issue). However, we did get attacked by flies when our food came out. I know there's nothing they can do about that but had we known that was going to happen, we'd have just eaten inside. All-in-all, we had a good time and the waiter was very friendly and told us all about the Oakhurst area which neither of us had ever visited. I really did not want to write this but after several visits each being absolutely horrendous: I have to. Where to begin? From staff walking around with cigarettes on their ears, undercooked food & food poisoning... which landed a whole 50% off the food. An Irish car bomb with Khalua instead of baileys, our cocktails coming out after food, which was just appetizers (50 minutes for apps, 52 minutes for drinks). Every single one of these things was on separate visits within the last two weeks. I live down the street & I've tried..... so many times.... If I do come back I'll be sure to sit at the bar. Ohhhhhhh, the U Joint. I have spent quite a bit of time here. Most of the crowd is local as are the staff. Speaking of the staff don't be fooled to thinking they are surly or unattentive. I find the U-Joint's character's hilarious. They are usually busy and helping clients so no need to take offense when there is ONE bartender and ONE patio server for their amazingly awesome and dog friendly patio. They are probably just overworked. They stock various draughts throughtout the year, some killer sliders and specials, and a really tasty burger named after their own establishment. Last night we were sitting at the bar, and normally we like coming here. Last was different. I ask the bartender what was the soup of the day. He rolled his eyes and walked away to see what it was. Italian wedding. I said I will take a cup, and a smash burger. And the person I was with ordered the philly cheese steak, and tots. Our orders came out. I got my smash burger and some other soup. And the person I was with got a gyro and fries. He sent the gyro back. I didn't have the soup. It was like it was our fought for not getting what we order. Just the attitude. Disappointing first experience at this neighborhood spot. Spend your money across the street at Steinbeck's or even Mojo's. Slow service for a half-full spot. The waiter was overly talkative and made excuses for, in his words, "forgetting about us". I ended up walking to the bar to get menus myself, and a second time to the host stand to remind them our party of four was at the back waiting for our beers after waiting 15+ min. Salsa and queso was alright. Definitely like bar type queso and salsa. If I could give 0 stars, I would. My husband and I went there on a Saturday night to check out somewhere new for food and drinks. I walked inside and asked if we could sit outside on the patio. The host said yes and gave us menus. Nobody ever came to our table. There were two women sitting nearby talking and being served drinks. The server/host came to them with drinks and never acknowledged us or even looked our way. We waited 10 minutes before we got up and left. Before we left, I went to the host booth and told him that we had been waiting for 10 minutes. He stated that we have to come inside to order. Mind you he never mentioned that when he gave us the menus! I told him that we didn't know that and it was our first time there. Definitely felt unwelcome and will not be returning! read more

I'm definitely a fan of this neighborhood establishment, they have great drink deals and a very nice outdoor patio. The bartenders are very very and sociable. Today I hade the blackened fish tacos and the loaded French fries. The bacon was cooked a little longer than I prefer but they were still very good. While in this part of town with our dogs we checked Bring Fido for a place to have lunch. We decided on this place and when arrived we found lots of people were there with their dogs on the patio. Hostess informed us there would be a wait for a table as they only allowed people with dogs to sit at tables on the edge of the patio along the railing. After a significant wait we were seated and then had to wait for our server. When our sever finally made his way to our table we were already ready to order food and we asked for a bowl of water for the dogs as we saw them under other tables. Our sever informed us they only had a few of the bowls and we would have to wait for someone with a bowl to leave. Both of our orders came out wrong and had to be sent back. Refills were an afterthought. From what we could tell our server only had 4 tables so I'm not sure where he kept disappearing too for long periods of time. We spotted the Pizza place across the street and kind of wished we had gone there instead. Once we got what we ordered it was not all that great. Dog's never did get a bowl we gave them one of our glasses. We were there for almost 2 hours just to have lunch. Not worth it, we will not be back. read more

The only think this place has going for it is the patio. The food is bad, really bad. The beer selection is uneven and has selections that feel more like 2009 than 2019. I really want to go to this place but after trying a few times I just can't stomach it. The quality of the food like like what you would expect from a small college town bar or something in the burbs. Really wish that Oakhurst had better bar food. This is the second and last time I will try this place. The waiter definitely gave off a vibe of doing my job... with a side of attitude. He's got friends over at this other table... My other guests all commented when leaving how we felt about his demeanor. So the food... wow, bad really bad. My parent commented on how cold her food was when it arrived. The gyro (if you can call it that) was three razor-thin slices of lamb meat in a tortilla shell with not enough in the shell to satisfy anyone hungry. Seriously the worst gyro I've ever had. 100% better gyros at Arby's and that place in the mall food court. No one in my party left feeling this place's food or hospitality. I'm pissed at this place. I like the food. I like the beer. I enjoyed it a lot pre-pandemic. But, man, the people here think it's still 2019. They gave up on COVID precautions quite a while ago. You have to cram inside with all the other barflies who want to kill themselves with a virus just to pay and pick up your order. You can't even pay online. I really do feel for the staff who would probably rather not be put in these situations with customers who can basically throw caution to the wind. Heck, the UJ in Clayton, Ga (you know, deep Trump country) has better adherence to COVID protocols. I was just up there. It's a cute town for people who don't believe in public health and rationale. Nastiest experience ever!!! Flies flying around the table and food everywhere (on the patio) and the cup with cucumber salad had a thick layer of left over queso in it!!! Clearly a dirty cup!!! The manager felt that it was just a mistake. He did not feel that it was a big deal and even said that it was just a mistake and argued that the rest of the food was fine. He comped one meal but just could not see how this possibly could jeopardize anybody's health... I will not ever come back here!!! I understand that mistakes can be made, but the attitude of the manager leaves me to believe that cleanliness and customer care are not important!!! Extremely gross!!! the food is ok. the drinks aren't bad. I can take my dog and sit on a great patio. I want so badly to like it here because is is 2 blocks from my house. But, the service is just god awful. Last time we were there we asked for water 3 times and it never came. We waited for over 30 mins. We couldnt even get someone to take an order. i have given it 3 shots now.
