Ate here with friends during Porchfest. After considerable confusion about seating we found a table. The place was packed with people and the kitchen was reportedly overwhelmed, but we stayed. After all that, the servers were great. I had the fish and chips with the Cheap beer. The anonymous cheap beer was faintly beer-flavored, just enough to be not water, which is exactly right for a $3 glass of beer. My fish was good. Two pieces of battered and fried white fish served with tartar sauce, a tiny scoop of cole slaw, and French fries. My companions had chicken wings, vegetarian chili, and poutine. The chili was fantastic, and I heard good things about the chicken, but the poutine was a pass. The cafe is reasonably large, with two dining areas inside plus a bar and an outdoor patio. The decor is neighborhood sporty, with an emphasis on Wisconsin (Green Bay Packers and UW Badgers prominent). I'd definitely eat there again. read more

This is my second review. We went in for lunch, thinking we'd grab a good burger, but the waitress convinced us to try the lunch special, which was the jerk chicken with rice and beans. It was perhaps the best jerk chicken I've ever had. Absolutely outstanding flavor and taste and the rice and beans were good too. I am going to be brutally honest. This is a pub, and the food is pub food. I had the fish and chips and it was some of the most unenjoyable food i've had from a actual restaurant in while. The service was adequate, and overall didn't change how I felt about the restaurant. The ambience was as expected, it wasn't pretending to be what it's not, with cracks and flakes coming off the walls, to the tarp that's collecting the water from the leakage in the ceiling. I don't come here too often but when I do I am often pleasantly surprised. It's a small and fairly typical menu but the food and drink don't disappoint. The ambiance is great and so are the people. They have good happy hour specials at a time when many people have done away with these (half off beers I think before 6). We sat outside and enjoyed some creature comfort, lagunitas, and root beers for the kids. Food came super quickly. The pretzel is huge and comes out piping hot. The accompanying cheese dip is good but very heavy and less appealing over time. The wings though were excellent and worth the temporary price increase. They come with a lot of meat on the bones and the sauces are tasty. I also got the homemade bbq brisket sandwich (also generous portion and pretty good) and sides of baked beans and fries. I thought the menu could've had more options; it was a bit limiting. I ordered a grilled pimento cheese sandwich. The pimento inside the sandwich was still cold. I was looking for a melted pimento cheese sandwich, so for me, it missed the mark. The waitress recommended a jalapeño beer, which was the highlight of the night. This is a great neighborhood bar & restaurant in Decatur. If you live in the area, it's definitely worth a shot! This was my husband's and my first visit and really enjoyed how low key the whole experience was for a Friday night. Service was great, honestly. I wish I had taken down our server's name, she was so cool. There's also seating in the patio and if you're lucky you can snag a propane heater for those cold nights. Our wait staff will not win Miss Congenital as she had the personality of a wet sock on a cold day. When we walked in she just looked at me and didn't say a word or comment what the sitting sit was. In a Short staffing situation I give restaurants a break but they weren't busy. She ain't nice. The hubby got a burger and broccoli and I had the Chickpea Burger which was excellent with a side of green beans which still had a great snap and was grilled with soy sauce. Chickpea burger had a great crust and was larger than I expected. Hubby didn't comment on his food which meant it was adequate. The Manhattan's were good especially seeing they were just 10 bucks. Didn't need parking, but there is a lot adjacent to the restaurant, and there is street parking in the vicinity. We were able to score a high-top table near the bar area without a wait, and the server and bartenders were friendly. We nibbled on a kale salad, and tried a cup of the soup of the day, with a bowie Q sandwich. Really liked the kale salad and the sandwich. Also, the atmosphere of the restaurant is calm enough to have a conversation and hear what is being said. The bar is full, and the menu has enough variety to have something for most folks. This is a great weeknight spot if you are a local (or in town for a bit)! The atmosphere is very lowkey. My favorite is sitting on the patio where dogs are welcome (the twinkle lights at night make it fun). "The beer we got" is cheap and makes a fun time if you split a pitcher with friends, however the other beers are pricer. The food is decent. I included a photo of the pizza rolls we ate. Apparently, they sell out of these quickly because of how popular they are. In my opinion, it wasn't really a pizza roll (there was hardly any cheese), but it was still really good nonetheless!! I ate lunch at The Imperial today after driving by many times and envying the people chilling out on the patio. Although there was space on the patio, the slight fall chill and wind sent me inside to the bar. The restaurant is bigger and prettier than I expected. This is a good place for groups of 6-8 with the food selection and ability to push tables together. The bar was spare but sufficiently stocked. For a cocktail I had the Look Sharp which is a tequila concoction with rose liquor, bitters, and grapefruit juice. I really liked it and it packed a punch. I started with the pimento cheese - this appetizer has become a favorite of mine, and I really enjoyed The Imperial's version. It's a less creamy pimento cheese, and I prefer that. The serving size is huge - the size of a cup of chili/soup and plenty for two people (see photo!). I ended up taking more than half of it home. I ordered a plain burger but added bacon and American cheese. (Yeah, that's what I did.) The burger was decent - perfect for the price point and cooked at medium as I requested. It was still juicy and had a slight char from the grill that I enjoyed. The tomatoes were fresh and firm, the bacon was crispy, and the cheese was that fake American flavor we all love. For my side I had the cup 'o salad which was filled with large tears of greens which made it awkward to eat but I was glad they didn't skimp on them. The portion sizes were great for me - enough to eat and fill full without worrying about being wasteful because I didn't eat the leftovers. Service was fine; it wasn't crowded but the person working the bar appeared frazzled at times. I felt lucky that I wasn't eating during a busier time. The Imperial isn't fancy food trying to win you over, but it's solid food with a menu that has something for almost everyone (even vegetarians...not sure about vegans though!). read more

Nice space, convenient, friendly folks, good food, a worthy beer list. The patio might be a nice hangout spot. Burger was above average, if a bit small. Cole slaw might need a kick. Broccoli salad excellent. I'd have rated it higher but for one thing: after we arrived (before 6 PM), sitting at the bar, they cranked the music up to the point it was difficult to carry on a conversation. First, This place is just about a 3/4 mile from the square by Agnes Scott good area. Not bad on the prices of beer or cider. Thiers however had no taste of pimentos or cheese for that matter. The saltines that accompanied the dry bowl of pimento cheese were good. How the fuck can you mess up this southern staple. Mushroom swiss burger tasted like a dish rag seasoning was sprinkle on it. It tasted like a earthy soap burger. the poutine didnt taste like gravy or pimento cheese just tasted like wet fries without salt. The cold cucumber soup was ok after salt and pepper was added. ahhhh the mac and cheese, first your spoon is not supposed to stick to your lips as your trying to pull it out of your mouth after depositing the mac in it. It again needed salt and pepper. I love mac and cheese but damnit they couldn't get it right. A bar trying to be a restaurant or a restaurant trying to be a bar. This seems like a locals only bar. The bartender and cook dominated the bar with their banter and the bartender seems to think patrons enjoy her off-key vocals. When I cashed out the bartender said (not asked) "together yes?" And handed me the check. Any seasoned bartender knows each stool is treated like a table, one bill per stool. I said seperate the bills and she gave me attitude. There were 6 peole in the bar and it took her less than 30 seconds to split the bill Im glad she was safely back on her phone as we walked out. read more

The Imperial was a pain to locate - with no signage in an obscure location, navigation was just barely enough to get me here. The bar is unlike anything I've encountered thus far in the Decatur area. Alas, I do not say this as a good thing. Decatur is known as a vibrant hipster scene peppered with hip restaurants that feature creative, yet approachable, cocktails and foods (that generally are amazing). In comparison, The Imperial feels rather... pedestrian. The beer selection was adequate, but not impressive. The atmosphere felt horribly disjointed - rickety wooden tables and chairs, stained glass window accents, old brick, eclectic artwork, and an odd floor layout to fill the space. I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt (since they opened not too long ago) - but even then, I can only go so far. We weren't served by any one waiter or waitress - just whoever so happened to be walking by at a particular time. Service was sloppy. When we ordered our food, my wife asked for no tomato or pickles on her Roast Beef Po' Boy. Guess what she bit into when she got her sandwich? Yup, pickles and tomato. My wife reports that the Roast Beef Po' Boy, after removing those pesky pickles and tomatoes, was only "ok" - average at best. I ordered the Buffalo Bleu Burger. It too, was only "ok" - I scarfed it down alright, but you won't see me adding it to any "best burgers in Metro-ATL" lists anytime soon. The ONE thing I can do to sing The Imperial's praises is tell you about their "La Poutine De Georgia". A-MAZING. They take fries (which are pretty good on their own), ladle on some po' boy gravy, and top it with pimento cheese. For an additional $1.50, you can get it with bacon. Do it. The bacon is entirely worth it. Yes, it is a heart attack in a bowl - but a guilty pleasure worth having. It's too bad that the poutine didn't make up for the overall lousy experience. With so many other restaurants in the area that have their act together, I don't really see myself coming back here. read more

The Imperial is a casual neighborhood spot that surprised us with the quality of ingredients. It was obvious that this kitchen only uses high quality ingredients. The burger was juicy, flavorful and done exactly the way I like it. The bacon was crisp and lean. Lettuce, tomatoes, onions and bun were all fresh and contributed to a great tasting burger. The Mac and cheese side dish contained real cheese and it was plentiful. I don't get cinnamon on French fries but the quality and crispness of the fries were very good. Service was slow and nonchalant. We had to wait 15 minutes to get our bill and felt like no one had responsibility for our table. Overall, a good experience and we will be back! read more

The Imperial is a gem. Great place to see the sun set, just far enough from downtown Decatur that it's not mobbed 24/7, cheap beer. Both times I've been there was no wait for a party of 2, or party of 4. Parking was easily available. The food is pretty good. I've been here twice and gotten 2 different burgers, both of which were delicious. I'm a sucker for blue cheese so I got the Buffalo Blue. It was tasty but the buffalo sauce was a little mild so it needed some Tabasco. The regular fries were nothing special, but the sweet potato fries were amazing. They also have $2/glass $7/pitcher PBR, which is the price it should be! They also have a good selection of craft beers if you want to pay a little more. Service was excellent. I've been wanting to visit The Imperial since it opened (I live about a 10 minute walk away), and finally I went for the first time tonight! It's honestly exactly what I had envisioned: super warm and welcoming, great food, and relaxed atmosphere. The bartender was super nice. I'm annoyed with myself for not making there sooner. They have trivia on Thursdays, FYI, which just adds to the community vibe. While I was there I got my favorite: the impossible burger (yes, as I type this, all I have to do is type 'impossible' and my phone suggests 'burger'). They also have fresh cut fries, which were delicious (brought some home). Overall, if you watched Cheers or Murphy Brown go to Phil's and wanted what those characters have, Oakhurst/Decatur has it in The Imperial. read more

It's sad since I've driven by The Imperial several times without noticing it, and it took ATL Burger Week to get me to check it out. My friend and I went one weeknight, and the place was full of patrons. Not sure if this is typical or it was due to Burger Week. Since it was a mild evening, we lucked out and snagged a table on the patio after being told by a staffer we could sit anywhere. Like Brick Store, we didn't seem to have one dedicated server but a rotation of various people who were attending to us, some a little more outgoing than others. The Damn Gouda burger wasn't bad on its own but paled a little in comparison to subsequent Burger Week burgers I consumed. But for $5, you can't complain. It certainly was a messy tower of beef, fried onions and pickles, plenty of bacon, and gouda cheese. The toasted bun was a nice touch. Because of all the burger in the bacon, it was a good thing we didn't add said item to the La Poutine de Georgia ($7.25) then. The poutine was my favorite aspect of the meal. I love pimento cheese so adding it to gravy-laden fries is brilliant. My friend and I happily noshed on the poutine while waiting for the burgers to arrive. Parking: There is a free parking lot behind the restaurant, with spaces on the eastern side. And I saw a cat in the lot! Also, lots of street spaces available. If you are looking for a comfortable place to have a beer and some pub-grub, this is pretty all right. Having just moved from So Cal, I wanted to find a comfortable place to walk to so I can watch baseball and sip decent beer. I tried the other places in Oakhurst - which are all OK - but this place is my favorite of the local selection. Nice folks working there, VERY relaxed atmosphere, decent food and beer. Do I think that their tap selection is JUST A BIT too heavy on overly-hopped beers? YES. Do I understand that they have to offer what sells? YES. I get that I'm not the average beer drinker today (I loath IPAs) - so I won't gripe overmuch. They always have Guinness up, and usually something else I'll like, so I'm good there. And they offer the bets Trivia game on Monday night that I've encountered. So go and have fun - just don't walk in expecting a swanky, upscale experience. It's good just the way it is. read more
