I went to this bar back in february with some friends while visiting and the first night was pretty ok. The bartender named Jack was sweet and entertaining considering it was a slow night. He flirted a lot with my friend and it was a silly moment. We went back to enjoy a night out again before heading home the next day and Jack was there again. Because my friend had had such a good time chatting with him before she flirted back a little bit and was just enjoying the night. We ordered food and drinks and things were going well. Throughout the night Jack and my friend would sneak off and talk and make out while he was on the clock. None of this mattered to me because who cares, it's a bar, we're young and just having a bit of fun. However after we left the bar he texted my friend that it was "messed up" we only tipped 15% on our $193 bill claiming he "took care of so much" for us. I'm not even sure what that means because again - our bill for that night was almost $200. The food was amazing - I need the salsa recipe STAT - but overall the bartender ended up being kind of a jerk that seemed like he was just doing all this to get laid. Earlier this week (mind you it's July) I went back to give this place a second chance and the bartender mentioned before - JACK - was asked by one of my friends if we could get green tea shots and he felt it appropriate to confront me about this review. I apologized if my math was wrong because he claimed i only tipped 13% & not 15% was constantly saying "20% is standard" (not true but whatever) and then when i said he claimed to take care of so much HE claimed the bill should've been $250 and then said "but i understand your white entitlement lets you think you can do whatever" (idk i blacked out with rage after "white entitlement") MIND YOU you i'm half chinese not that it matters, jack - cause i know you're reading this - & i of course got heated because HES ALSO WHITE so clearly HIS white entitlement lets him think he can be hateful to patrons for reviews regardless of wether or not they try to take ownership of their faults. The vat is small but has a lot of outdoor seats with heaters on the patio. Service is soso, its main function is a bar. Service is as good as you tip. Food was ok, with decent sized wings. Some friends and I popped in the other night because we were hungry and their kitchen was open. That was basically the only reason that we went there. The bartender is impatient and there are no servers, so you have to order food at the bar. She was annoyed that she rang up the order and then we added 2 cokes....she could have just rang the cokes on another ticket and swiped our credit card a second time. The worst part is that our bill seemed really high for what we ordered and she said that they had increased the prices, but the new prices are not printed on the menus or if you use the QR code (we used the laminated menus). And of course she didn't say anything when we ordered, because money must be no issue for her.... Finally got to come here today. Someone recommended this place to me a few months ago. They said that the Righteous Room had one of the best veggie burgers in Atlanta. Its a divey little bar on Ponce in the little strip plaza that has Urban Outfitters, a Fed-Ex ship location and the Plaza Theatre. Right near the Majestic. It has a parking lot and there is also paid street parking nearby. This place for sure lives up to the name..."DIve" lol I love the area because it is sorta the buffer between little five points, VA Highlands and Candler Park. So the people in the area a huge mix that ends up in some great people watching and interesting sights. They have a small patio out front which is where I chose to sit. I love eating and doing everything outdoors. You seat yourself and I was mostly promptly attended to. I looked over the menu just to see what else was available and they have some pretty good eats. Of course I still went with the veggie burger. It is house made with a mixture of Fresh Veggies, grains and Tofu. It is served wrapped in Nan and topped with lettuce, tomato and onion. I chose to have it with Potato Wedges since I'm a french fry buff. ( I love everything Potato LOL) The sandwich was actually very tasty. Great consistency and flavor and the fries were cooked perfectly. I would definitely come back for it again. Other things that looked good were the Salmon Quesadilla, Veggie Plate, Roasted Red Pepper hummus and the Blackened and Apricot Glazed Filet of Salmon. It only took me about 10 visits to fall in love with the Righteous Room. The first 9 I was dragged by my ankles into the smokepit hellhole, but once the nicotine fog clears you have the least pretentious, most laid back neighborhood bar in the Highlands. Yeah there's Manuel's, but they don't play Adolescents, at least not when I'm in there. R. Land decks the walls with some true Atlanta art, the drink prices are under rent control and you can smoke after a certain point so maybe leave the Madewell sweater at home, baby girl. The food is bar food: completely functional and even tasty, but not the spotlight. The service is A+, on point, Best of Atlanta. The somewhat exotic bar food is underrated. Some, like the rosemary chicken sandwich, have a Mediterranean twist. Others, like the meatloaf special, are more homey. The vegetarian chili cheese fries even has this carnivore eating meatless. It's the quintessential old-school dive bar, where regulars and newcomers mix with ease and the jukebox cranks out some of the best bar music this side of the Mississippi. This is the place to go for a good stiff drink or a cold beer. No fancy specialty cocktail lovers or high-end wine snobs need apply. (Plenty of other ATL establishments exist if that's your thing.) Service is efficient, if brusque, so know what you're ordering before the bartender comes your way. The space is relatively tiny, so on busy nights be prepared to wait. Even on a recent, bitter cold Tuesday evening, the place was filled, with just a few open seats at the bar. Unlike most Atlanta watering holes, smoking is allowed, and many of the bar denizens will be lighting up, along with some of the staff. If that's not your bag, you might want to walk around the corner and check out the Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge. I've never tried the food here, so I cannot comment on dining options. Of all the bars on the crowded Ponce strip, the Righteous Room has been consistently the bar I've had the most comfortable and relaxed nights at. Though the size is pretty cozy (about 14 tables plus the bar seats and a couple small gathering areas in the back, as well as a small patio that is open on nights when weather permits), I've never really had a problem finding a place to sit, though I wouldn't recommend trying to bring a large group here. That said, the wait staff is cool and quick and comes back to check the tables often, which suggests to me that they actually care about their customers. The atmosphere is standard local bar: dark with weird art and smoky but not stagnant. They have some really awesome grafitti in the men's room. They also have by far the best jukebox in the midtown area. A good mix of classic punk and indie rock from Gang of Four to Prince, and unlike several other bars in Atlanta they never try to bring in live DJs or bands in, so the atmosphere keeps a consistent, conversation-allowing chill. You can actually hear what people say when they're talking to you: a novel concept for some other bars. The food, a small but varied menu, is also above your average bar food. A range of well made sandwiches and snacks. I've actually chosen to go to dinner here and not just eat to go along with the drinks, so that says something about the quality. There's choices for the vegetarians also. Overall, I'd say this is one of the best, if smallest, bars in Atlanta, and one of the few places you can go and not have to do with an inordinate amount of hipsters or yuppies or badasses. read more
