I live all the way out in North Hollywood, so it takes me about 2 hours of traffic to get to Unity sometimes. I'm usually shaking by the time I get out of my car.. but it's so worth it. I make it a point to go see Crystal once a month- she is amazing. I don't know how she does it, but she somehow makes my frizzy rat's nest into a hip, smooth, stylish do. I've been going to Unity now for a couple of years, following my girl Penny from Lux. It's a great place, lovely staff, always clean, though honestly, I go just for my Penny!! Penny has been cutting my hair for at least ten years now. I have loved every cut she's ever given me. I've gone to both sides of the spectrum, from giving her very specific instructions to total carte blanche and she's made me look fierce every time. Plus, her cuts grow in so, so beautifully. I've honestly gone as long as six months between cuts and my hair still looks great. I only get cuts (I have almost black hair so I can dye it myself at home), so I can't speak personally to her as a colorist, but I'd be willing to bet that her coloring ability rivals her cutting ability. Also, she doesn't give me flack for using home dye like some folks will. She doesn't try to push product on me, but always has great suggestions for items to I can use. I know there are a couple of negative reviews for Penny here on Yelp, but I'm sorry - they are just wrong. What grown woman do you know will just walk in, sight unseen, and let someone cut their hair? Wait, let me rephrase that. What grown woman - with STYLE- do you know will just walk in, sight unseen, and let someone cut their hair? None. A haircut is not a small deal. You do not just decide to hop in somewhere and let someone cut your hair. We're not talking about trying a new kind of sandwich; a haircut stays with you for at least the foreseeable future. Also, no, Penny will not use a curling iron on your hair, but she's a serious wiz with the round brush. This place is on the expensive side, but you truly get what you pay for. I have been here many times, usually with Jennifer as my stylist, and have always walked out with exactly what I wanted. I wish I could afford to go to Unity more often! They are clean, professional, and from my own experience, as well as the word of several friends, Unity has experienced stylists that know how to do an array of cuts and colors. When I first went there a few years ago, I had a much edgier cut and color, which Jennifer did beautifully. Since then, I have had to look a bit more conservative (traded in my blue hair for natural-ish reds), and have yet to be disappointed. I just wish that I could afford to go more often! read more

I am growing out my hair so I was worried I would get a major chop but Penny listened and she cut just the ends and framed my face with some layers. Unity Salon is the first time I have ever stepped foot into a place that charges $$$! I decided to give it a try since I could no longer locate my stylist where I grew up near Bakersfield as she moved from salon to salon a lot. And all the cheaper places here in Fullerton didn't really impress me. So I gave Unity Salon a call because I figured to treat myself esp since I was pregnant. I got an appointment with Heather. She was very nice and she did an amazing job giving me layers and bangs. Of course I tend to grow out my hair long so it would be a while before I get another cut. After all the do-it-yourself hair coloring, and getting frustrated taking care of my really really long hair, I decided to call Unity Salon back up. Heather was booked solid that day. I was totally bummed because I was leaving town for the rest of the week. So I was able to get an appointment with Carmen. I was nervous at first, trying someone new and spending all that $$$, but I sucked it up and went to see her. Carmen is such a sweetheart, and she has done a great job with my hair!!!! She gave me long layers, and I followed some of her suggestions, and colored my hair a dark blue black. She then styled my hair with large curls that held all day long! Now how the heck did she do it? My hair usually falls flat and straight within twenty minutes... I felt like my hair was celebrity style quality and totally worth the money! Carmen, if you're reading this, please contact me and let me know what you did to make my hair hold my curls without it looking stiff and full of product....It'll be a few more months before I go back, but I'll definitely go back to Carmen! BreAnna is the number one person I go to. Because of her, I don't go to any other hair stylest. She listens and makes sure that my hair comes out the way I want it to be. Ok. So I was in desperate need of a cut and color, and my normal stylist is away so - decided to take the advice of fellow yelpers and try this salon. I was nervous because finding someone who can color my hair just right is always always a huge task, but I took a chance. First of all, when I called they were super nice and fit me in right away.
