Alright, so I'm giving this place 3 stars. I'm going to preface this with the fact that I think the product is fantastic....for the most part. And by that, I mean that I think the cake donuts need work. Sure: they may not be the draw, but a good doughnut shop needs, NEEDS, a good cake doughnut (classic? blueberry cake, or cake w/ chocolate frosting. Might I add, the regular chocolate frosted is way too rich, and this is coming from a guy who can't get enough sweet, as it is). But my real gripe is the fact that this place has gained phenomenal popularity without upping the supply that its demand necessitates. You simply need to up your capability for taking on the large volume of customers. Yep. I'm taking the business consultant standpoint in this review. And the tough love that's about to ensue really is because I do enjoy the product and, so far, the people who work there.
Let's start with the fact that the hours are listed as until 3 PM until Saturday, and maybe Sunday, if I remember correctly. You've been here, right? How often are they sold out before 1 PM? Most weekends, I'd venture a guess. You've been open for long enough now that you should accommodate for that fact. Anything else, you still close at 1 PM but you increase your capacity to take customers. I hate to sound insufferable, but I shouldn't have to wait 20 minutes or more for a doughnut or two on a Saturday morning at 9:30. If you had more than one register and one person taking orders, I think handling a higher customer turnaround rate would be completely feasible. And, in all honesty, I don't think that request is all that ridiculous. Let's not forget that some people do, in fact, order 1 or 2 donuts, and others flounder about as they try to fill one of your boxes. For those of us who'd just like to get our coffee and doughnut or two and sit down to read, or just leave, that's incredibly frustrating. Never forget that you are not only in the food service, but in the customer service business.
I have other suggestions, but there are two rules for success: 1, never tell anyone everything you know. I'll be coming back, don't you worry, but goddamn if I'm not going to try to find the non-peak hour that not only satisfies my doughnut craving, but also serves my hedonistic weekend ventures.
Oh, you wanted a review of the doughnuts? Ok. Fine. I've had the vanilla frosted (can't stop wanting that one), the strawberry (tastes like REAL fruit!), the chocolate marble (see above, but if rich is what you're after, you're in for a bona-fide treat), the maple bacon, which lives up to the hype, the bourbon caramel, which, being a whiskey drinker, is more caramel than bourbon (not a complaint in this sweet tooth's mind), and several others. As said, the cake donuts do not have that moist, cakey feel of a classic doughnut shop's doughnuts, at least, to me, but if that's not what you're looking for, you're not going to be disappointed.
Listen, I'm the kind of guy who can find something wrong with most things. But if you only look at what I dislike compared to what I DO like, you're missing the forest for the trees. This place is a gem. read more
