Union square donuts are the bomb.com.  We ordered through Uber Eats, and they arrived in perfect condition and safely boxed.  They warm up very nicely in the microwave! They are very DENSE (and sweet) so you don't need to order a ton.  We ordered the bananas foster, Belgian dark chocolate, Vietnamese coffee, tiramisu, and sea salt whiskey caramel.  All were to die for, but the bananas foster and Vietnamese coffee were our favorites.  Overall, great experience and delicious/unique flavors!  If you're in the mood for a sweet breakfast/treat, Union Square is the way to go. read more

Being from Japan, I always think that American donuts are too sweet. It's always like eating pure sugar, or even eating concentrated artificial sugar. Those refers to Krispy Kream donuts or donuts sold at grocery stores. Since I moved to Somerville, several people mentioned that Union Square donuts are great and I always see people in front of Union Square donuts when I pass by. Ordered online the night before and was given a 7:15am pick up time. We arrived a little after that and my doughnuts were ready. They pour drinks when you arrive, so be aware of that if you're looking to grab and go. Staff were very nice and friendly and pick up was very easy. We tried the Boston Cream, Birthday, Jumbleberry, and Salted Caramel Whiskey. If you're looking for something not too sweet, the Salted Caramel is just perfect. The Boston Cream was super decadent and I couldn't finish the entire one. My favorite was the Jumbleberry, which was tart and sweet at the same time. Union Square Donuts is Boston's famous donut shop and it lives up to the hype. This location is north of Harvard University in a quaint strip with several other cafes, restaurants, and shops. It's small, but they do have several tables and window seats. They also have a bathroom. They sell coffee and breakfast sandwiches, but even if you order those, get a donut too. Ok.. I dont do the 5 star thing often right... I have been a Kane's Donut girl for years and that was my "Usual" spot for donuts when having a craving. However, we have been stopping in to Union for months when we run to Neighborhood to get Cream of Wheat... I would always get a donut & never eat it, maybe a bite here or there, but I would get Butternut or Coconut or something crunchy. THEN.... A friend told me about this place about two years ago and I am so glad I finally made it. This is such an amazing spot with great staff and delicious donuts. I checked out the donuts online before, but I was still overwhelmed by the beauty of the donuts and the selection. After speaking with the staff I decided to get their honey glazed. It is their original flavor and it is oh so good. The honey really pops and gives the donut a nice little kick. And the cake just melts in your mouth. Unlike the haters, I like this place--a lot. Unlike those who love this place with a blind eye, I see the flaws (though they're minimal). Some letter grades: The toppings and fillings: A+. Maybe even A++. The dark chocolate in the Begian Chocolate and the Boston Cream is luxurious, voluminous, decadent, and whallop-packing. The brown butter crunch is superb. The Boston Cream filling is custard, not cheap vanilla pudding. And on and on. The underlying donut: Maybe only a B at best, sometimes dipping to C and bringing a spongey quality that's more like a sponge than spongecake. But certainly doable, and way more than doable given the toppings and fillings. Coffee: A solid A, whether hot or cold. Service: A. The donuts might be high end, but I've encountered no snootiness here. Value: They're expensive, hitting $4 for the most expensive. When you hit the jackpot with your flavor selection and freshness, the $4 is a bargain. When you don't, you feel it. Misc: Only purchase what you can eat in the shop or in the one sitting when you take them from the shop. These donuts are built to be eaten (soon) that day, not the next day. read more

They probably have good donuts, but for sure the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER !!!! It was pouring rain and they didn't let us in to order, that's fine because of COVID. The window they serve from doesn't have an awning to protect the costumers from the rain while they are ordering, waiting, and being served. The worst part is that the employees were laughing at people waiting outside and getting all wet from the rain. A bit too heavy for me, I prefer my yeast donuts lighter, but if that's not your preference, Union Square Donuts is a great local shop with plenty of interesting options (Banana Split? The flavors constantly change and the new easy to market donuts just don't taste great. The old standbys really are saturated in fry oil, too. Visited the assembly location. I heard all the hype about this place so I had to check it out. When you walk in the presentation of all the donuts you just want to buy them all they look so delicious. I chose the red velvet. I was so disappointed when I took my first bite. The donut tasted stale to me. They are not in any way sweet. It was dry and flavorless. I can't say I'll be back to try any of the other flavors since I bought 2 of the same one for me and one for my daughter and it cost almost 9.00 for the 2. The donuts here appear amazing (10/10 on looks), however the flavors just aren't there. A filled donut that was supposed to be vanilla tasted like cream with no actual vanilla flavor. Red velvet tasted dense like a cake but with no actual flavor to it. Coffee donut was good overall but tasted like a maple donut from Dunkin - it didn't actually taste like coffee at all (which I had been excited about the most). Only one that had flavor worth it's price tag was coconut which was flaky dough and flavorful. Sunday= donuts. At least that's how things were in my house growing up. On our way out of town, we stopped by Union Square Donuts for a sweet breakfast. Pick up went seamlessly after we placed our order online and we were soon enjoying donuts and iced coffee/iced chais. These are hands down the best donuts I've had in Massachusetts. My biggest pet peeve with donuts is how overwhelmingly sweet they can be. These donuts, while sweet, don't just taste like straight sugar. They've got a beautiful yeasty quality with some inventive ingredients. Are these donuts pricy? Yes. But with good reason. You can taste the quality of the donuts and the time that went into making them. We got four donuts (listed in order of preference): Vietnamese Coffee, Boston Creme, Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch, and Belgian Chocolate. I would happily get any of these donuts again as all were delicious. The Vietnamese Coffee has such a unique flavor and I also loved how coco-y the chocolate was on the Boston Creme. As a self-proclaimed donut queen (see my Yelp profile pic for reference), I am always on the search for great donuts whenever I go to new places. I tried Union Square Donuts last year when I lived in Brookline and was unimpressed. However, all the rave reviews made me feel compelled to give it a second chance. So one winter morning I walked for almost 30 minutes to the Somerville location from Cambridge, and long story short it was worth it. I got a brown butter hazelnut crunch, a chocolate cream-filled donut, and a sea salted bourbon caramel. I really enjoy the fluffy and airy texture of the dough, and I didn't find them too greasy. I couldn't really taste the sea salt or bourbon in the sea salted bourbon caramel, but I really enjoyed the chocolate and brown butter hazelnut crunch. So much so that I made the trek again a few days later. This time I got a Vietnamese coffee and blueberry jam. I couldn't taste the coffee in the Vietnamese coffee, but I loved the blueberry jam. It seems like the flavors are hit-or-miss for me, but the hits are so good I would go back. read more

I will give a breakdown since the maple bacon was the only doughnut that was fully consumed. The chocolate "back to school" doughnut is about 95% dense flavorless dough and the chocolate frosting is so dark It tastes like you just ate a scoop of powder cocoa The danish was okay. The apple flavors were pretty good, but again the dough is so dense it's hard to get to the good stuff. I was really excited about the curler doughnut. The flavor is okay, but it was pretty much like an over cooked churro. Last we got the Boston crème. I was so waiting for a Boston crème from Boston. I visited the Assembly Row location over the weekend. The place is immaculate, the donuts beautifully displayed. I typically do not review places unless I have something nice to say...the era of Yelp has made many customers rather nit-picky IMO, and having previously personally worked in service for many years, I get that anyone can have a bad day. That being said, I thought the service I relieved at the Assembly Row location to be discourteous and when I mentioned it to the sales person ringing me up, his response was rude and perhaps a bit taunting?? I'm not sure how to interpret it, honestly. He was then snickering with his colleagues about something and I asked if he was laughing at me me. He said "no" but continued to look at me strangely and laugh. I asked him if he realized that his behavior would be interpreted personally by me and he said yes, he did, and continued making faces and gestures to his coworkers. Maybe he was high on some edibles? I honestly do not know. Now, the donuts were good, lovely. But with all the amazing artisan donuts being made all over Boston these days, there's no need for me to go back to a place where I'm not feeling comfortable and where it seems my business was not appreciated. I waited several days before writing this review, by the way. I did not want to reflexively write out of anger or to get anyone fired. Upon reading all the magazine articles etc regarding this place I decided to give it a try. Half a dozen doughnuts for $28? I mean seriously. I will admit they use higher end ingredients for toppings. But not executed well. Of my doughnuts only the hazelnut and brown butter was enjoyable.
