I'd seen a few advertisements for Union Kitchen's brunch, which peaked my interest. I don't live too far away, and I figured I'd give it a try on a weekend morning. I was pleased, in general, but I was hoping for a little more I guess. First, the space seems to open a little late for a restaurant on the weekends (11:00 AM). Anyway, when we arrived, we were seated by friendly staff and offered pretty average coffee. I found it a little odd that they didn't offer any dairy alternatives (soy, almond milk, etc), but that didn't make or break my experience. The space is casual, clean, and feels a little like a West Elm catalogue, which isn't a bad thing. The menu is very limited, especially if you have any dietary restrictions, so be warned. I had ordered the UK Benedict; my friend ordered the turkey hash. Both came with home fries, which, like the coffee, were average. The Benedict was...you guessed it...also average. I substituted avocado for the meat that is typically served with it, and the avocado wasn't quite ripe. The food wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't memorable. Average atmosphere + average food = average rating. My friend seemed to like his hash, for what it's worth, so maybe I just didn't order the best items on the menu. I'd definitely give this place another try for brunch or even dinner though to see if they could boost their rating in my books. read more

Went for drinks only .... huge bar, can make a lot . Menu drinks are limited tho. If I wanted to tell them what drink I wanted , I'd just have my husband make it ! Great ambiance to meet up with a friend. Bad place for too large of a group. Drinks around 11 or 12 bucks, but strong. Crab rangoon dip was yummy too ! My girlfriend and I tried here earlier in December 2021. The apps and entrees were mediocre, including the drink which my girlfriend couldn't take more than a few sips from because it was flat-out gross. They were able to accommodate a party of 8 on a short notice. I ordered the pork belly appetizer. I was not sure how well the egg and pork belly would go together, but it was delicious! I then had the seared shrimp linguini. The garlic pesto sauce was to die for! It was also a good portion of pasta and the shrimp were a good size. The service was nice and attentive. So I'm upping the stars because I finally got to dine in.. much to my delight! Service and atmosphere were both amazing! I was so pleased with my dish I wanted to do the Beyoncé "Single Ladies" dance. I got the mushroom gnocchi with scallops which was so friggin delish! I ate the whole thing and would have licked the plate if I could. My husband got the salmon and felt the same way. My daughter got the pasta with butter and she ate it for two days in a row! For dessert we all split the brownie with salted caramel ice cream.. sinfully good and my tastebuds were bursting with joy! I will definitely be back. My friends and I went here for dinner and we really enjoyed the food. The waitress was super quick to help and offered up recommendations, as we were struggling to land on just one thing. We ended up getting a few things, Caesar salad, crispy brussles sprouts, seared rare tuna tacos, bucatini carbonara and the braised boneless short rib (which came on top of Mac & cheese). Everything was amazing! Brussels sprouts were so crispy and full of flavor, the short rib just pulled apart and went so well with the Mac and the carbonara with the pork belly, chefs kiss! Valentine's Day meal! Fantastic! I had the cavatelli with a lamb Ragu, and he had a roasted half chicken. It was deboned. Unbelievable. Delicious delicious delicious. We shared an appetizer of molton queso filled with vegetables and mushrooms. It was served with small tortillas and chips. So good! The cocktails are amazing. Table for four on a Sunday evening. Called at 5:00 to set a table for 5:30. Reminder: Sunday parking in West Hartford Center is free. So it was all "Easy Breezy!" Union Kitchen, recently opened with the interior redecorated from the previous establishment. The central dining area now configured to open (easily rearranged) tables in the center and booths around the perimeter. Thank goodness the bar area wasn't changed much. The Wall of Liquor was and still is highly impressive, including a Rail Ladder for the Tender to access the top shelves. Beverages: Four waters, one diet coke, and an Ale for his Lordship (Citrus IPA, Funk Brewing, PA). "Dilly Dilly." I mentioned the Spirits, but the Wine and rotating Draft selections were indeed will done. Appetizers & Bread: A special Gluten Free basket of bread was offered by our server. Lightly buttered and grilled, which was a first time anywhere. The other three of us had shared fresh sliced bread. We order their Fried Brussels Sprouts, prepared with Truffle Oil, Honey, Paprika & Sea Salt. Very flavorful and enough for 4 to share. Mains: Chef's Vegetable Lasagna (Mushrooms, Tomato, and Ricotta), Chicken Bolognese (Rigatoni, Herbs, Whipped Ricotta, Grated Parmesan), Wild Mushrooms & Farro (GF / Mushrooms, Boursin Cheese, Arugula, & Tomato Jam on the side), Meatloaf (Densely Packed Meatloaf & Onion Puree, topped with stripped Braised Short Rib, and Truffle Fries with Grated Parmesan). The meatloaf a bit dry and salty, the fries excellent. Each dish was an ample serving requiring four doggie boxes. Dessert: Sticky Toffee Bread Pudding to share between two, plus one nibbler (who me?). In all, the dining experience was very enjoyable and the per person cost about $28. Given it was a Sunday evening, the dining space and bar were not at capacity, yet the noise level rather loud. Though our table conversation was easily maintained. Maybe the best burger in the Hartford area. Certainly the best in WeHa center. Been here for lunch and dinner and the rotating drafts. My wife enjoyed both cocktails she has tried, and the waiter made a brilliant strawberry lemonade for our non-imbibing guest. For dinner, the duck preparation was unusual and delicious, the short ribs were tender and richly flavorful, and the desserts were actually worth the calories. Those short ribs become a flavorful has for brunch on Saturday and Sunday. And did I mention the rotating drafts? Been there four times; will go back. read more

When she brought the steak to the table it head a disgusting smell and I don't how the chef let that out of the kitchen. Again, to be polite I said let me cut a tiny Piece......ohhhh my I didn't know how to get it out of my mouth I think my whole body shivered. The "smoked/maple" cheese on the charcuterie board did not have any hint of smoke or maple whatsoever. The short rib was a little dry and needed a knife to cut. Overall: Union Kitchen has a lot or potential, but the chefs should taste the food before it is ready to be plated and served. Very overpriced! Went for Sunday brunch last weekend. My friend and I each had 2 drinks, nothing fancy or top shelf (white wine, Prosecco) and we each ordered a meal. The bill was over $100. My eggs Benedict was good, but nothing extraordinary, and for $19 it doesn't even come with potatoes or a side. After splitting the bill and adding a tip I spent $65 on eggs and 2 glasses of house wine. They definetly went up in price on their drinks, it was not that expensive last time we went. Not at all worth the price. Too bad, I've always liked the ambiance, I cannot justify the cost for what you get. read more

By chance, we made some last-minute plans with another couple who suggested the Union Kitchen. It was a first time visit for all 4 of us and I must mention that 3 of the 4 have very high expectations for our restaurant experiences. From the moment we entered the Union, we were repeatedly impressed despite being somewhat experienced skeptics. We were immediately greeted at the door with a smile and very courteous manner. As patrons, we were asked what our seating preferences were...not pushed into whatever was available and expected to feel lucky. Once seated, the drink orders were placed and filled promptly plus our menu questions were answered in knowledgeable detail. We were never rushed and the service was well-timed to our pace...very considerate and professional. I must mention that our server was extremely helpful and honest. Additionally, if she did not know the answer to a menu question, she went into the kitchen and asked. Based on her information, I ordered the burger which I never do because even burger dedicated restaurants are now producing marginal products. The server's info was a bullseye and I found one of the finest burgers I have enjoyed in a long time...no fibrous lumpy meat, a delicious mixture of beef cuts cooked exactly as requested and presented A+. Our table also had a few apps, a salmon entre, an order of Bolognese and some desserts...all excellent and served professionally and with a smile. We are a hard-sell but all of us were very impressed and not only will be repeat customers, but we are spreading the word to our social network that the Union Kitchen is an experience not to be missed. read more

I've passed Union Kitchen many many times and never been tempted to go in. I was specifically craving a fried chicken sandwich and was near Blue Back Square. A Google search turned up Union Kitchen, so I decided to try it. I had the fried chicken sandwich on the brioche bun. It had garlic aioli and hot honey. It was a good mix of savory and sweet. The chicken was well fried. I paired it with the truffle fries. Such a decadent/guilty meal, but delicious. I had the "Blame it on the aperol" to drink and thought it was good, not too sweet. Union Kitchen is another one of those places that would benefit from half-star ratings on Yelp! I would give it a 3.5, but find little reason to bump their rating to a 4, so a 3 it shall be. Whole Prawns (3/5): These were nothing special and exactly as advertised. Four whole prawns sat atop a corn & chorizo bed. The prawns were fresh and cooked well, but nothing stood out in terms of flavor. Poutine (4/5): Union Kitchen's poutine consists of chunky yet crispy fries smothered in a thick duck gravy. While the gravy was rich, I felt that the gravy lacked salt! I'm also not a fan of duck served in gravy form and am convinced that of all the ways to prepare it, gravy does this waterfowl the least amount of justice! PEI Mussels (5/5): Man oh man. If there was one thing I'd deem a must, it'd be their PEI Mussels. These were super succulent, but the best part was the braised pork belly chopped into bits and thrown over the top as garnish and the rich pork belly reduction coating the flesh of each mussel. This giant bowl of mussels seemed never-ending and was a steal at $9!! Outside of the PEI Mussels, my meal wasn't terribly memorable. Their bread was lackluster--too dense, dry and not served warm! However, I can't speak for the entrees as we'd opted to do an appetizer sampler on our visit. Perhaps a return trip is in order before I rate this kitchen! read more

I was in town a few weeks ago and saw them putting the exterior finishing touches on. I happened to be back in town and saw it had opened and decided to walk in for dinner at the bar. I'm so glad I did! First off, the wait staff was welcoming and informative. The decor was spot on. And the menu was well honed and not ridiculously expensive. One glance and I saw my favorite cut of steak, the bavette (similar to flank steak, but wider grain leading to great tenderness). It was prepared over perfectly cooked mushrooms with the right amount of browning, and the requested medium cooked bavette was perfectly pink throughout with a nice crusted seared exterior. Wines and cocktails were amazing and perfectly paired. Also, the service was prompt, but not intrusive. You would never guess this opened only in the last two weeks! Union Kitchen definitely has my vote! Stopped in for a little appetizer and some cocktails. We had a classic Paloma- a delicious grapefruit and tequila cocktail, and the Stumblebee- another tequila cocktail with lemon, honey, and a unique salt and pepper rim. Not only were these drinks pretty to look at- they were really nicely done and we enjoyed them! We also ordered wild mushroom toast and Bao Bun appetizers. Wow! The flavors on both these appetizers were outstanding! The mushroom toast had a bright, savory pesto and the delicate creaminess of the whipped ricotta paired perfectly together. The Bao Bun was just yum!! Two little buns of fried chicken, a fried avocado, and a nice aioli. We just really enjoyed this place so much! Can't wait to return to Union Kitchen. Our waitress, Riley, was so sweet and she was knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. I've been to Union Kitchen a couple of times for lunch but this time it was for dinner with my husband. We did online reservations, but there wasn't much open so we took the 5:15 reservation but then when I actually called the restaurant a short time later, I was able to get in at 6:15, my preferred time. We ordered a pear arugula salad to split and each had the half roasted chicken. There is no complimentary bread but you can order 3 Parkerhouse rolls for $3. Do it! They tasted like they were baked fresh and served in a minicast iron skillet glistening with melted butter with the perfect amount of salt and pepper sprinkled on top.The pear arugula salad was nothing special especially with the candied orange in it but the roasted half chicken with well seasoned mashed potatoes and spinach was superb. It was unbelievably fresh.Turns out, as our server Marla told us, once she puts the order in, they put the raw chicken in the oven. No wonder it tasted fresh! The skin was so crispy and flavorful. We had always wanted to check this place out. At the start of spring, we strolled through WeHa center and came across some available outdoor seating. When we stepped inside with intention of being seated outside, we changed our minds and opted to sit indoors, because a) the windows were open to encourage air circulation b) we were seated in a corner booth tucked away from any potential crowd and c) it was still early so the outdoor seating area was more crowded than the indoor tables. The restaurant, like so many others, did appear understaffed, so service was a bit on the slower side. We ordered the Brooklyn and Campfire Margarita for drinks. Both were solid and the margarita is super smoky. We did wonder, with all the liquor lining the bar shelves, why the cocktail menu wasn't more expansive. We ordered the white bean hummus to start. The hummus was very dense in spite of the generous pour of olive oil. Th pita that came with the hummus was pretreated with butter and sugar, if that is your thing. For entrees, we ordered the pesto shrimp and mushroom farro. Both dishes were really quite greasy. The farro was different and tasty: the consistency was right but it could have really used some extra greens/ colorful veggies. The shrimp in the shrimp pesto was fairly big in size. We still did manage to order dessert. The Mississippi Mud Pie was really delicious, and I would recommend it. read more

Late night dining was our goal and we found it at Union Kitchen. Started with good bread and olive oil followed by splitting a Warm Spinach salad which was perfect. We skipped the WeHa Restaurant Week menu because there so many entrees that looked terrific. We were correct. My Eight Hour Short rib over Mac and Cheese with spinach was delicious. Table mate had the Lamb Ragout and said he won. It sure was a toss up so I def have to go back. Dessert was a split Sticky Toffee bread pudding also super. Great knowledgeable service! read more

This was my first time visiting and it was great! The waitress had left early due to a migraine, but we felt taken care of the entire time. We had started off with the truffle fries (not pictured) which were AMAZING! Our food came out pretty quickly and hot. My friend had the Union Kitchen Chop Salad with steak (not pictured) and loved it, saying the dressing was amazing. The rigatoni was delicious and chicken was juicy. The turkey BLTA was huge, making it a little difficult to eat without falling apart, but still appetizing. My fish was very moist and falling apart. I would definitely come here again! Came here for lunch on a beautiful day. We had the Brussel sprouts, pork belly, and calamari appetizers. They were all good. They went so fast I forgot to take a picture! I'm not a Brussels kind of girl but these were cooked well and I could taste the honey. They give you a large serving as well. The pork belly was served with a sunny side egg. The portions are small though. I love pork belly as I grew up eating it regularly and this was tasty. The calamari was just run of the mill to me. Nothing bad but nothing special. I had the alla vodka pasta with chicken. It was great so much my daughter was eating off my plate. The hubby had the blackened snapper. They give you a large size piece of fish which is a plus. The only downside was my hubby said it was too salty. He scraped off some of the blackened pieces and said that made it better. My daughter had the NY strip with onion rings. Must have been good cause she ate it all and didn't offer anyone a bite. read more

5+ stars on the service. They were phenomenal and super accommodating. The food was ok. There are not many options unless you are over the age of 60. If I were to give this restaurant advice, it would be to add more meatless pasta options to the menu. Based on the pictures on this Yelp page, none of the food they actually serve for dinner is photographed. If the menu was based on the photographs on this page, it looks like it would be a hit. None the less, they decide to appeal to the 60+ crowd by adding 'roasted duck' to their menu. read more

We had a gift card for this place, so we stopped by to get some drinks during happy hour. My husband and I have eaten here twice before and weren't overly impressed with the food, but we liked the ambience and the service. Tonight, our female server at the bar, was just plain unfriendly. I didn't catch her name, but she made us feel as though we were bothering her when we sat down and ordered drinks. She didn't even attempt to smile. Luckily for us, she left while we were still there, and a nicer bartender took over. Still, Union Kitchen has way too much competition to get away with lackluster food and unfriendly service. This place is so nice! I love the service. I ordered the NY strip my friend got the prime rib. They definately have a different way of plating their food. Its fancy and a unique style. I wasn't expecting an egg, so I gave it a 4 out of 5 because I typically don't like my eggs runny. However little did I know, the egg with the steak was delicious! The service was excellent.
