This is my third time at flying monkey ( 2nd time at the new location on the Berlin Turnpike) and I must say the food is always on point ! Note they also offer happy hour (aka monkey hour ) Tuesday-Friday 3-5:30 I ordered the frazberry froze which was really good it literally tasted like a raspberry sorbet in drink form which I loved . Service was great our server was very attentive and checked up on us regularly and we got our food pretty quick . For my entree I ordered the chicken sandwich . Which was grilled chicken , bacon , Avacado and a creamy aioli served in a fresh bun and a side of fries ! Soooo good highly recommend. I truly miss when The Flying Monkey was located at HFD Airport. The setting was unmatched being able to enjoy a meal while watching planes take off and land created a unique and memorable experience. The food, at that time, consistently matched the atmosphere and made it a place worth returning to. Since its relocation, however, the experience has not been the same. While it's nice that they still offer live music and occasional events, the overall quality particularly the food no longer meets the standard I once associated with it. Unfortunately, it's lost much of the charm and appeal that made it special, and I find myself no longer wanting to visit. read more

I'm back. It's been years. The restaurant is located on 2095 Berlin Tpke in Newington, CT. The Flying Monkey Grill & Bar is a vibrant American fusion restaurant and bar known for its aviation-inspired theme, energetic lounge vibe, and diverse comfort-food menu. For my first drink, I'm having a Pineapple Upside Down Old Fashioned made with Evan Williams bourbon, pineapple liqueur, Angostura bitters and honey impossible syrup. What a great garnish! This is well balanced too. I like the use of the large ice cube to keep the drink cooled and less diluted. The taste of pineapple is there but you can still taste the alcohol. For my soup, I'm having the Monkey Chowder made with a creamy broth, clams, diced potatoes, onions, celery, bacon and chives. This is good! I love those Westminster Oyster Crackers! For my entree, I'm having the Honey Soy Salmon Salad which is made with blackened cast iron seared Atlantic wild caught salmon with honey soy. It is served over mixed greens tossed with creamy sesame dressing and topped with red onion, carrots, cucumbers, pickled ginger and crispy sesame crisps. This is great! Salmon is delicious! I love those sesame crisps! Love the dressing! For my next drink, I'm having the Cherry Bourbon Crosscheck made with house barrel-aged bourbon infused with grilled oranges, chai and Luxardo cherries. We ordered a few things and the chicken was fire , the steak egg rolls were fire, the birria eggrolls were pretty dry so you will need the sauce but it's still pretty dry. The home fries includes sweet potato so beware. I did not know this when I ordered and wasn't exactly happy about it either. My friend ordered some kind of burrito that came with potatoes that ended up being sweet potatoes. I think they should warn people that their potatoes are of the sweet persuasion. Now to the good part, the mimosas bar was awesome! They give you a bracelet and they mark off when you go up to the bar to basically count your drinks. Our waiter, Matt was great. The restaurant was cool and chill and minus the sweet potato fiasco, it was a good time. I don't live in CT, but I know for next time. Come here about once a month or so. Never have had a bad experience. The decor is cute with a monkey theme but not as overkill. The service has always been good. The food has always been well prepared, well cooked, well presented and enjoyed by all we dine with. Another thing I appreciate is that the owner is there. I came here for brunch with some foodie friends and we had a great time. This was my first time coming to this establishment and the restaurant provided great vibes. During are brunch, many of my foodie friends ordered some food and I was able to decide what I wanted. I eat with my eyes and some of my foodie friends ordered the Chicken and Waffles and their famous Chicken Wings. Some of the people who ordered the Chicken and Waffles said the chicken was on the dry side and needed more seasoning. Also, I didn't like how the Waffles looked because they seemed like they were undercooked. So, I know I wasn't ordering that and I was able to try a wing from one of my foodie friends. This is my first time at this restaurant and I must say I was impressed. When you walk in you see nothing but monkeys which makes sense with the name of the restaurant. My family were seated right next to where they normally have a band normally play in the evenings. The service was slow to begin with as the person at the bar was taking care of us which was a bit slow but it was OK but noticeable. One drawback is the size of the sodas the provide sodas should not be the size of a child size cup normally given at a chain restaurant. This was my first time here. The place is covered in monkey decorum which I absolutely love and if you have any monkey lovers in your life, bring them there. You can purchase monkeys at the door. The bathroom even has monkey themed wallpaper. Now to the food. The food was delicious. My daughter and I ordered a few of odds and ends. We ordered the Delta Donuts, Flying Monkey Wings 8ct Spicy Monkey flavored, Flying Monkey Wings 8ct BBQ, and two B-52 Burritos. We were so stuffed after eating the donuts and most of the wings that we took the burritos home. The burritos do reheat perfectly so they are good the next day. The BBQ flavor was your basic BBQ and the spicy monkey was an interesting flavor. I definitely liked it. The service there was really good. We were seated right away. Our waitress was funny and checked in on us periodically but didn't interrupt us if she noticed we were in depth chatting. My friends and I visited Flying Monkey for happy hour for the first time today, and unfortunately, it will also be our last. Our entire table ordered only from the happy hour menu. We never ordered from the regular menu, nor did we even use it. When our checks arrived, my friend noticed she had been charged the regular menu price for the shrimp instead of the happy hour price she ordered. When we brought it to our waitress, Maggie's, attention, she insisted that she had served the regular menu shrimp. My friend explained that she ordered directly from the happy hour menu, just like everyone else at our table. There was no reason for her to expect or order the regular menu item. The manager, Josh, came over, and instead of acknowledging that a mistake may have been made, he focused on the fact that my friend had already eaten the shrimp. He repeatedly stated that he "couldn't give it to her for free" and could only offer a 25% discount. The problem is, no one ever asked for the meal to be free. My friend simply wanted to be charged the happy hour price for the item she actually ordered. She ate the shrimp because she believed she had received exactly what she requested. What disappointed us most wasn't the mistake itself--it was how it was handled. Restaurants make mistakes, and most take accountability and correct them. Instead, we were made to feel as though the mistake was somehow our responsibility. The experience left us feeling uncomfortable, unheard, and disrespected. I can't say for certain why our concerns were handled the way they were, but it left my friends and me questioning whether we were treated differently because of our race. Whether that was the case or not, that is how the interaction made us feel. Customer service is about listening, taking accountability, and making things right when mistakes happen. Recently went back after so many years to cela birthday . It was a Friday and it was packed. Going in circles trying to find to find parking and waiting for our table in which we had reservations for. They did have a live band on Friday which was cool but it's very busy in there so you might be able to hear some of it . Our server was wonderful..very good. Once we put in our order our food took almost an hour! Took long. We were so hungry! But everyone seem To love what they had ordered. My salad, carne asada was spicy for my taste. I think it was the pico de gallo sauce. If you don't like spicy just check about the sauce or have it on the side. Also very very few GF options. I tried some festive drinks for the season including the O'Christmas tree margarita with coconut crème, the stroke of midnight (tasted like a rainbow cookie), The Grinchtini (too minty for me), Drunken Monkey rum punch (very tropical), Asian pear martini with elderflower, and S'mores takeoff (flavorful with vanilla chocolate hazelnut espresso). From my photos you can see presentation was on point. For appetizer I had juicy tasty flying monkey wings with spicy sauce, it came with crispy fried jalapeños. Even though the portion was small for entree, I'm happy I chose the tasty fuel for your flight; medium NY strip steak topped with yummy chimichurri sauce with poached eggs and home fries. I traded a bite with my man's waffle and fries entree, I thought the breast piece I tried was a bit dry; also his carne frita appetizer. I don't eat too much pork so a bite was enough for me, it had a lot of flavor and went well with the tostones. For desert I ordered a delicious banana fosters shortcake to split; butter cake with bananas flamed (like a brûlée) with rum and brown sugar, topped with pecans and whipped cream. I don't revisit too many places because I like to try new spots, but I'll come back for this desert and to try more food items and drinks. We were a large crowd of 30+ and the server was on point. I calculated my bill and when it came, it was exactly as that. No errors, I appreciate how smooth this was. I was looking for a new happy hour spot and decided to give this place a try. Hubs and I got there about 4:30 and snagged two seats at the bar. Kathy was our bartender and boy was she wonderful! Now let's talk about food, we stuck to the happy hour menu and ordered the chicken sliders, the burger sliders, the spicy shrimp and the fried mozzarella. The spicy shrimp were definitely our favorite followed by the chicken sliders! We asked for some of their house made ranch for dipping, which was delicious! The burger sliders did not come with all of the toppings that were listed in the menu and we had to ask for them. After waiting the burgers became cold and weren't they weren't that great. The fried mozzarella appeared to have sat under the heat lamp too long and was lackluster. On to drinks! Hubs ordered the golden monkey beer which he thoroughly enjoyed! I decided to go with one of the seasonal cocktails, ordering the banana bread old fashion! Hands-down, my new favorite! I took a picture of the ingredients so I can try to re-create it at home as well lol! As for ambience, the live music started at about 6pm! We really enjoyed it. The food that was presented to me was more like food imposters. The menu definitely misrepresented the food in front of me. The patty for the hot honey chicken sandwich looked like a food magnet. Also, how do you use the same patty for the Hot Honey Chicken patty and the Aviator Chicken entree with the exception of the melted cheese? I had great expectations going in, but unfortunately they were not met. I dined in as a group of 4. Our server was very nice and friendly. However, she took our orders not writing it down. When servers do this it makes me nervous that they will not get something right. It was not busy at all in the restaurant, we were seated on the left side and there was only 1 other woman in the restaurant dining on that side the entire time we were there and there was no patrons at the bar either. We waited longer than usual for our food. When it finally was brought out, by a different employee, i noted i was given the wrong salad dressing. I had ordered the scallop cobb salad but asked for it with apple cider vinaigrette - instead of the house made ranch dressing it usually comes with. I have a dairy intolerance and while i can eat dairy, it upsets my stomach, so that is why i asked for the dressing substitution. Well my salad came with the ranch dressing on it. Having waited extra long for our food and not wanting for my company to feel obligated for me to wait while they remade my food, i did not say anything when our original server finally came back to our table to check on us. I also do not trust sending food back to kitchens. I ate my food, and my group all enjoyed their items. But i was very disappointed that i waited so long for my food and when it finally came it was made wrong because the server couldn't bother to write my order down in the first place to make sure it was correct. I feel if you are going to be so confident to take orders by memory, you should at least get them correct. This is a one and done for me. Will not be coming back or recommending to others. read more
