When my boyfriend and I started coming here a few years ago, it was never really busy. Now there is a wait almost every time we go. So glad to see that it's becoming more popular! The atmosphere is very unique and the food selection is huge. I always get breakfast food, but my sister got a steak and cheese sub yesterday and it was amazing. The fries are great also. I frequent this spot for breakfast often mostly bc of the fresh squeezed OJ. Food seems pretty consistant and fresh. The service is terrible though. I frequently have to get up and go to the register if I need something. If they aren't taking your order or dropping off your food, the wait staff wants nothing to do with you, I usually dont need much other than that, except my water refilled, which NEVER happens. I will often order 2 extra cups of water at the start so I dont have to track down a server in the middle of my breakfast. A bit rediculous. read more

I'm not quite sure I get the bad reactions to this place.. The food (while not OUTSTANDING) is better than most breakfast offered in the Allston area (which is limited to begin with). The food tasted fresh, was aesthetically attractive and the coffee was fantastic. The atmosphere is clean and simple, which is in more cases than not, ideal. The service was laid back but by no means slow, and very friendly. My boyfriend had the french toast which was delicious, and my eggs/toast/bacon/etc was at least better than Zaftigs, that I'm positive of. Dirt cheap? No. Outrageously expensive? Hardly. I stopped by @ Union for a quick bite last evening and enjoyed some delicious food. What I didn't expect was live acoustic music. I wish I could have stayed longer, but the three singer/songwriters I did see were wonderful. The waitress was pleasant and communicative and the place felt like home. I love breakfast. I would eat it for every meal of the day if I could. But I would NEVER eat it at @Union again. The service, by the red-headed waitress, was HORRIBLE. She hovered until we made our order and then we didn't get her back for the 40 minutes it took for our food to come. That would have made sense if they were actually busy, but they weren't. That and we saw her serving other tables promptly while we sat at an empty table, hungry. I ordered a hot chocolate that took so long you would have thought they were making the chocolate from scratch! Turns out it was just hot chocolate syrup. Disgusting. We came here the day after New Years and @Union was our hangover cure! We had to wait like 30 minutes for a table (our fault for showing up at like 11:30). The staff was super friendly and the atmosphere was casual. The corn beef hash was delicious and cooked just right! They promote their coffee pretty heavily here but I'd say its no better than regular Folgers or something like that. Nothing really special about it. read more

This place is my new favorite breakfast spot. They have some unique and absolutely delicious dishes on the menu. I highly recommend the Southwest Benedict (biscuits with poached eggs and sausage gravy) and their hash browns. I think everything from their service to their food has improved drastically over the past year or two. I can't get enough of the place these days. Visited @union for the first time in over a year (I've moved out of Allston/Brighton) and they appeared to have their previous service issues resolved. In the past, the wait for food was painful. Eggs should not take 30 minutes. I think they simply did not have enough staff. It seems to have gotten better, even the wait for a table in a seemingly ridiculously long time turned out to be relatively short. They're pricier than other breakfast places in the area but the food -and the atmosphere-are superior. read more

Wife and I went there at noon on Sunday. I noticed there was a huge blackboard next to the drinks menu, but there was nothing written on it. We ordered iced coffee and it came black. I asked for a little cream on the side, but when the waitress came back, she had a half gallon carton of cream and she proceeded to pour too much of it into my coffee, instead of letting me control the amount. We had to wait almost a half hour for our food and during that time she never came back. Finally, someone else brought the food and it was so cold we would have sent it back only we figured it would take too long. Wife thought the bread had mold on it, so she didn't eat it. Waitress never came back after bringing the cream. There was no free wifi that I could detect. We will not go back. read more

3 words to describe @union: immature,incompetent, awkward. despite there being 3 servers, a hostess, and 5+ free tables my boyfriend&i had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. once seated we waited 15 minutes to be acknowledged, at which point i had to approach a server and ask to be waited on. our server was very apologetic, young, and uncomfortable. luckily, the food was excellent, so we tried it again the next weekend. The service was just as sloppy, the food was just as good. i don't think a single person on staff had any experience in the food industry prior to its opening. overall, i wouldn't suggest @union to anyone who doesn't have a bit of patience and a sense of humor. read more

Average food at reasonable prices. The menu is extensive enough to cover most brunch items. Not a place I would seek out but if you happen to be in the area during brunch not a bad place to pop in. Do not go during the weekends unless you have enough time to spare. The food took nearly 30 minutes and about 10 minutes for the waitress to come help us (we ordered a bagel sandwich and pancakes... nothing crazy). Everything I've eaten here was delicious. The hash, eggs, fried potatoes, sourdough toast have been cooked with attention and to perfection. The wait service were very attentive too and patient when taking order. This place has great breakfast! I went there with my son for breakfast one day and got the eggs Benedict, very delicious. Also there coffee is very good with a bold flavor. I also had lunch there and got the Union burger, very delicious burger with tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. The service there was very friendly and great. Came here with a friend for breakfast. From the time we got in there until the time we left, we were thoroughly disappointed. We stood there for 5 minutes without even being addressed and were finally seated. I ordered a poached egg breakfast which I waited over 40 minutes for. My food was cold and the eggs were completely overcooked. The hollandaise sauce was disgusting..the gravy was disgusting (thankfully I ordered them both on the side). It took our waitress about 20 minutes after we got our food when we were already done to come refill our water and ask how our meals were. I said mine was bad...told her what happened and she apologized. When she came back with the check she had the audacity to say to me, "Next time you come in I recommend you ask for runny eggs". Uhm, there won't be a next time. My friend also had poached eggs that were fine..so I told her that and she made up some excuse about how chefs cook them differently. IT'S A POACHED EGG, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE RUNNY! To top it off, she never compensated for our horrible experience and their mistake. So, if you like overcooked and cold food, you should eat here. read more

I've been to this place twice and was not impressed either time. Despite my friend being in love with the home fries, I did not think they were that good. Each time I went I got the feeling that they were holding back on the portions. If I'm going out to brunch, I want a big breakfast. I can make my own eggs and toast anytime at home. My friend ordered the "healthy" omelet but wanted cheese with it, which it didn't come with. Not only did they forget to put the cheese on it, then proceed to give her some on a plate (not remake the omelet) after she pointed out there was no cheese, they also charged her $.99 for the cheese! Give me a break. After we questioned the bill to our waitress, she tried to explain that cheese costs money and we have to be charged for it.... Um, Excuse me??? We had to explain to her that the cheese costs $.10 and what we are really paying for is customer service, which we are not getting. So, NO we aren't paying for it. Unbelievable. She tried to be nice about it, but clearly had no experience as a waitress or was poorly trained bc that is unheard of bad service. On top of that my poached eggs were overcooked. Very unimpressed. I'd get better food and service at IHOP. Never going back there again. read more

For the second time in the last couple weeks I have gone into Union during the day, during the week to have brunch, both times it's been around 1-2 pm. They aren't very busy at this time during the week and today there were 4-5 other tables seated in the restaurant. I walked in and there was no greeting, just a nod from a young man that it was okay to sit anywhere when i asked. I sat down at a 4 top near the window and waited. I waited both times, this and my previous visit for 5-7 minutes with nobody coming to my table. Both times i got up and walked out, perhaps for the last time, it is unacceptable to watch the waitress clean a table when there are 20 empty tables instead of acknowledging me at any point, the table she was cleaning was right next to me so she's either ignoring me or she doesn't care who comes in. I'm not coming in to drink coffee and use your Wi-Fi but regardless, If you were busy then you would have my benefit of the doubt, say hey, I'll be right with you but it was completely as if i wasn't there both times. The waitress had nothing to say when i said thank you on my way out, as business and i assume her income walk out the door. Yes, i am a service industry person, which doesn't matter but you can't treat me like I'm ignorant and i do not expect the same level of service i provide in the fine dining establishment i work in 5-6 days a week but the behavior i see and have experienced here is abhorrent, how does this happen? I came back after it happened the first time, something can happen once and it can be an exception, maybe it was a mistake but this seems to be normal. read more

This is a tough one for me...very hit or miss food wise. The food is actually pretty good but the service is consistently AWFUL. No matter if they are crowded or dead, you can expect to have terrible service all around and be here for hours. A couple things I've learned about coming here is to order the second you sit down (or else you'll be waiting all day for your food) and to bring a water bottle with you anticipating not getting a refill or in some cases any water at all. Service aside, the food is solid which is what keeps us coming back. I usually get the omelet and husband gets a wrap. I would say for every 7 good meals I've had here I'll get one greasy/flavorless meal which isn't bad, everyone has their off days but it's the service mentioned above that is causing the two stars. One more tip: I would not recommend substituting potatoes for fruit...not worth the extra $2 since they only bring you like two orange slices...you are much better off paying the $5 for a separate fruit plate. read more
