I've been coming here since my freshman year at ASU and I'll be graduating this year. JIMMY and his wife CHINH are the only reason I come here. They're so sweet and so in tune to all clients. They go above and beyond whether you're a regular or not. I've never had a bad experience with them. Chinh does my manicure and Jimmy does my pedicure. I always leave satisfied and if anything happens they welcome me to come in for free to fix it. This salon is right across from the campus so it can be pretty busy, I always make an appointment with Jimmy. This is the best nail place I've ever been to and the only one I will come to. read more

UNI gets your eye brows on point, not to the point of looking like a Vulcan( not that there's anything wrong with that-LLAP) but perfectly and expressively shaped every time! A gal has to be able to express herself without saying a word ie: hellooo there, goodbye and even sometimes WTF!? UNI waxes, trims and plucks and then they clean the extra wax off with something that smells like a Pina Colada. Too bad they don't give you a real one with an umbrella because yes that $#!T hurts but that last tech gave me a mini brow massage afterwards, that's service! No appointment needed, reasonable prices, friendly technicians and you rarely have to wait and no more than a few minutes. I have been going to Uni going on 5 years now. The location is great if you are a student at ASU, or live in Tempe. There is generally no more than a 5-10 minute wait, if not immediate service, unless it is the beginning of the school year, or some sorority has a formal coming up. Most of them do a good job, and relatively quick, so its a great place to go if you're on a lunch break or don't have all day. They have a nice spa-pedicure, with a required 10 or 15 minute massage. They offer many different services ranging from full set acrylics, to mani-pedis, to waxing, and boast a hair salon as well. My only complaint is that sometimes it is difficult to get across what you are looking for in your manicure, or what have you. They do not all speak great English, so there is definitely a language barrier, and sometimes you need to show, rather than say, what you want. I wish I knew Vietnamese so I could understand what they say to each other under their breath, but I'll remain optimistic that it is nothing negative about me :-) read more

This is probably consistently the best place to go for a basic mani/pedi around Arizona State University's Tempe campus...which sadly isn't saying much. For a college campus town, Tempe has surprisingly few places to doll up with a spa experience--it's amazing that all the processed looking girls on Palm Walk can keep they're toes looking good in their platform flip flops (I went to ASU, so I have to knock it a little...). UNI Hair and Nail Salon fits the niche for the place close to campus where you can go to get a $10 manicure and a $20 pedicure (standard for this type of spot, and a-okay by me). They note on a sign above the pedicure stations to: "Please allow one hour for pedicure." Aka, no rushing off to class, work, dinner--once they've got your feet, they're going to keep them until they're done. It's always pretty full around 5-6pm, but there's rarely (if ever) a wait, so it's fine. The places glows orange and is clean. read more

I've been to this location a few times hoping the end results would be better but unfortunately it has not. I came here for gel set all times and I've been disappointed. The prices are definitely good for the area and it helps that it's so close to campus but I'd rather go elsewhere that has better service. The staff is nice but they NEVER FAIL to snip my cuticle and skin. I leave every time with my fingers bleeding a little bit. This is understandable a few times but it's multiple fingers on multiple occasions. This is something that bothers me especially when I point it out. I also find that there are an abnormal amount of bubbles in the coating is ridiculous. This comes from using old and thick polish and it's evident that it's really goopy and thick. The pricing is good but I would like to go somewhere where they take their time to make sure they don't snip me or anything like that. Spending a little more to get nice bubble free polish also seems like a good investment. I've stopped coming to this salon since this has been a reoccurring pattern. read more

Fast. Fast. Fast. I love this place when I'm in a hurry and don't want some extravagant massagey hour+ extravaganza. They do a perfectly adequate job, nothing stellar, and you're in and out. I don't care that they're gabbing away on their cell phones, because then they're not trying to make conversation with me. Minus a star for their faux sterilization practices. They reuse the same instruments and store them in unsealed autoclave packets, allowing them to look as if they've been sterilized. I'm not a germ phobe who frets about catching hepatitis from a nail salon, but the dishonestly behind the charade bugs me. Also, minus a star for the time I was positioned to watch one of the girls who worked there waxing her armpits behind a poorly positioned curtain. I've been here multiple times, once for a pedicure and other times to get acrylics and have never been impressed. This is the only nail salon withing walking distance of ASU's Tempe campus so they know they will gte business no matter their prices or customer service. I always feel rushed and the staff is typically rude. They are constantly trying to charge me more money for a simple design with my pedicure or tell me I need a totally new full set when I go in for a fill. They nail technicians have been really rough and it hurts! I shouldn't dread getting pampered. During my last experience I asked the nail tech to make my nails a bit shorter and she got so huffy about it and rough with my hands that I almost had to ask her to stop (and I typically deal well with pain)! Unless you're an ASU student without the motivation to find transportation elsewhere I would not recommend this salon. read more

I felt the need to write this review because 1. I miss Tempe more than I can explain and 2. Thuy is one of my most favorite nail techs I have ever had. EVER. I moved to Tempe when I went to college and I was looking for a cheap, convenient, quality nail salon. Before I moved to the East Coast I continued to return there about once every other week because I couldn't find another place I liked as much. Okay, let's get one thing straight right off the bat. If you are looking for a fancy, over the top, bells and whistles experience, I would suggest looking around a little more. This nail salon is exactly what it is. Reasonably priced. Fast. Close. I have never been a complete stickler for sanitation practices only because I find that even the high priced salons have questionable or lacking sanitation procedures. If you are afraid of getting any kind of infection just don't go to a salon to get your nails done. It really is as simple as that. With all that lame lecturing done, I have never had a bad experience at Uni. I used to go to a place in N Phx on special occasions and that would usually run about $175 for a mani/pedi plus tip. Honestly, the work wasn't that much better either. I have been to Uni so many times I have had work done by almost all the techs and while they all do a good job, I especially liked Thuy. She does an amazing job and is really personable. Just came to get SNS off my nails and get a gel mani and the guy took and acrylic nail and started pushing it under my nails to rip the SNS off. Completely tore off half of my nail my thumb was bleeding. I will never come back here again. Even when I was pulling my hand away and telling him I was in pain and kept pulling it off. I have been here before, and I loved it, but I was super disappointed the last time I went! The staff is friendly, and accommodating, and the artists I've had do do a great job with painting and glitter. They also have a wonderful selection of services. Pedicures are amazing. Dropped by for a manicure, and as soon as I sat down, my manicurist started talking in rapid Vietnamese. I couldn't see her headset so I thought she was speaking to me, but obviously she wasn't. In fact, she never looked at me during the lightning fast manicure, except in confusion when I said I didn't want her to cut my cuticles -- just push them back. She really didn't understand that, and asked me in broken English why I was getting a manicure but not getting my cuticles cut. She didn't have an attitude about it, but was just really confused. I think after that exchange, she told whoever was on her phone about it. I also thought it was strange that she asked me to wash my hands after giving me a lotioned hand massage -- sort of defeats the purpose of applying lotion to my hands in the first place? The whole experience was perfunctory, but didn't leave me wanting to return for a manicure. Not asking for a great nail technician, but it would have been nice if she acknowledged my existence other than doing my nails, and most importantly if she asked whether I wanted them cut round or square because I wanted them round! $21 for a basic pedicure gets you 20 minutes. Soak, trim, file, foot scrub and leg massage w lotion. It was perfect. I dislike sitting in the chair for 45 minutes. My lady was thorough and she did a good job. They had the music station playing current hits but just as background. There are approx 17 manicure chairs and 10 pedicure chairs. They are well prepared. It was not busy at 4:30 pm on a Saturday afternoon. All in all, I would recommend it. read more

I gave this place too many second chances when it came to getting my gel acrylics done. It's a little above average pricing for a gel set but this place IS clean & they try to be friendly. This is the second time I've had to come back to have them fixed the day after getting them done because of some flaw in their work or because they rushed through the process. Even after calling ahead of time to get it fixed (today) I had to wait 25 mins until someone was available. This review is for the gentleman--I come here only for men's haircuts. I have been coming to Uni since 2008 to get my haircut by Johnny. He's not a man of many words, but he is great at his craft. It's only about 12 or 13 dollars for a men's haircut here (no joke--the 3 dollar sign must be for the other services) but it feels like a hundred dollar haircut after every time. Just call ahead to make sure he is there. One time, I was in the middle of a haircut when I was interrupted by 2 huge, well dressed men. One of the men offered me 50 bucks to stop my haircut, let him get his done first, and then resume after he leaves. That basically pays for my haircut, Johnny's tip, and then some, so I agreed. I learned that this guy was actually one of the coaches of the ASU football team--pretty random that he takes his haircuts with Johnny as seriously as I do. read more

Their location close to campus also makes them super convenient. I've gone to get a full set of french tips and both times I was very happy with the quality and the price. The staff here is nice and makes everything hassle free. That said, I got my first pedi there today and I personally wouldn't come back to them for another, just because my feet didn't seem much improved afterward. I was hoping they'd get rid of some calluses but they didn't... so I took a PedEgg to these calluses after my visit and was able to get rid of them without a lot of effort. Knowing that, I feel that they could have tried harder and done a better job on my feet. I always have the best experiences here! Whenever I go to other nail salons to "get a better deal" I always regret not just coming to Uni in the first place. Sure, you could find a Groupon for some shady sub-par nail salon in Tempe, but I've regretted the times I've done this; while I may have saved a couple dollars, the quality elsewhere for lower prices is significantly lower and the prices at Uni are honestly really fair to begin with. This shop is family owned and they have a large selection of both gel and regular polishes. I've been here 3 different times my first 2 experience's were phenomenal. So this very last time I decided to make a 2 hour drive from my current city only telling my self I would go to this salon and none other. However this very last time I got a new nail tech and they didn't completely remove my nails clean of the previous polish they only buffed it down just enough to re apply new polish and they were able to do this because I only ever get the same thing (clear polish) and a white French tip so he figured it would go on un noticed after I had already asked the guy to soak my nails he just painted over them. This is unfortunate because the guy did not speak any English so I understand there was a language barrier but it's really not the customers fault. Also my service was for French tip gel polish change. And I just needed the color changed On my natural nails nothing fancy. This took 2 1/2 hours in total to CHANGE just gel polish from start of my nails being touched to finish and keep in mind they didn't even soak the polish off that's usually the longest part......So in summary I spent a whole lot of time and Money in this place and these are my nails today. 3 days after my initial appointment. The first few times I went there, it was just fine. However, although I can't speak for all manicurists who work there, the male manicurist (I unfortunately do not know his name), instead of cutting your hangnails, pulls them, which has made me bleed twice now. Although I never attended cosmetology school, I am pretty sure this practice is unsafe and is very painful. Unfortunately, this second time, I got an infection on my big toe from the open wound, and now have to be on anti-biotics for a week as a result. I may also have an ingrown toe nail due to this poor pedicure. I distinctly remember that his license on the wall expired in 2012, so that's another issue too. I've never had medical complications from a pedicure or manicure in my life, and this is a first, painful and very annoying experience. read more

It's a know fact hate football, but last weekend I had my nails done in New Orleans Saints colors. This nail salon is conveniently located right on the edge of ASU's Tempe campus, but in the few times I've been, I haven't been impressed. My gel nails always chip before I hit the two-week mark, and the service isn't the best (staff members and the front desk representative aren't rude, but they aren't overtly accommodating). The last time I came for a pedicure, I waited almost 45 minutes to be helped, when the gentleman at the front desk didn't mention a wait at all when I checked in. I like to ask for a specific quote before getting my nails done. I always show photos and specify any changes and ask questions about cost for length and shape. I showed a photo, asking to do a checkered pattern on two nails and was quoted $85, but $90-$95 for length and shape. She said if I went shorter than my current nails she wouldn't charge for extra length. Either way I wasnt interested in paying that much today so I went with a plain color. On the board with their prices, it is stated $50 for full set with gel. I went shorter with my nails- shorter than my normal liking because I didn't want to pay the extra $5- and was still charged. Every time I go to this nail salon I am charged more than they say when I sit down. Total I payed $65 before tip for a full set- NOT LONG- of a plain gel color. And to add, there's dents and bumps all throughout my nails and cut my fingers in so many places. I'm never satisfied here and wouldn't recommend. read more
