First, I love the location and vibe you get stepping inside. They have a lovely outdoor sitting area and comfortable seating inside with plenty of views of the river. The staff is always friendly and welcoming each time I have visited and overall feeling you can spend all day in this place and feel at home. I came today to try their coffee flights. Then theme was St Patrick's. They are small which is perfect because anything bigger would've sent me flying on the sugar! Each drink was different and thoughtful. The flavors blended well with the coffee. I would've liked to have tasted more of the coffee but I have no complaints. This round of flights was tasty with my favorite being the Lucky Charms which tasted like they infused cereal milk into the drink and the Clover with white chocolate, peppermint and vanilla with that striking green hue. Service was quick and friendly The egg on my sourdough "egg toast" was perfect, with the yolk soft but not runny, and the white cheddar cheese was nice. I had a Dirty Chai, which I really loved: espresso, chai spice and steamed milk. It was just the right sweetness. The building used to house a hat factory and they have examples of them above the doorway to the restrooms, which were clean and bright, like the rest of the place. First time visiting Underground Espresso Bar. I had saw the option for a coffee flight online so I stopped in just for that. Unfortunately I visited in the morning and the coffee flight was all sweet drinks so I did not end up getting the flight. It would be nice to have the option to select your own drinks for the flight. I opted for an iced coffee instead, loved the taste. I'm usually an Exit 11 girl but will have to branch out to Undergrounds more often for this iced coffee. I'm giving a 4 instead of a 5 because of the associates. The cashier who rang me out was very nice & found the answers to all my questions though the other two young ladies were not being nice to her. The cashier didn't know all the answers so she was asking the other two and they were visibly annoyed with her and answered her questions with disdain, even giving each other looks when the cashier turned back around that was clearing indicating their annoyance with her. The cashier was a very nice girl and was doing the best she could, their attitudes towards her seemed unnecessary, felt very childish. read more

I love the ambiance of Underground's Espresso Bar. It's one of the best attributes of this place. I the vibe in this place is literally "under ground" and has plants hanging growing out of the walls, which is so cool. The decor is clean, green & spacious. Another is the service; the most recent visit here I had a wonderful worker take my order with a smile on his face and just the nicest tone in his voice. We chatted a little in between me ordering, but it made my day. Great customer service and I can see why he was hired on. Drinks are great. I haven't had a bad one. Most recent was the iced Dulce De Leche, which is brown sugar flavor, I believe? I will correct that if I am wrong. I had their chicken salad on a croissant. I just started liking chicken salad, and it was pretty good & fresh. Messy, so I had to be mindful. Also I wasn't expecting it to have so much red onion, but I did like how it added flavor. Coffee and a breakfast item at the Undergrounds were included with our stay at River Sirens, so we went here this morning. Undergrounds is located on the riverfront, so there is a beautiful view out the window!! Half a star. It was quite crowded, so they must do something right (I just didn't experience it), so 1/2 a star for the potential. Parking is horrendous. They have their own parking lot with 5 spaces and 1 handicapped space. Needless to say, the lot was full. The larger lot right behind them is reserved for residents of the apartment complex. That left street parking and a public parking lot. Underground is located on the corner of Cedar and W Front. W Front has zero parking allowed in the block in front of the Undergrounds. Cedar has parking, but obviously, since Undergrounds is on the riverfront, Cedar only goes in one direction. There were maybe 10 parking spots in the block closest to Undergrounds, and they were all taken. It was cold, so we didn't want to walk more than a block. There was parking on one side of W Front in the next block. We found a parking place here. It's about a 5 minute walk. As pictured, you place your order by going up to the counter. They then give you a number and bring your food out. 1st, someone brought out 2 empty coffee cups. Told us where we could find cream and sugar, but those were the only directions we got. When we realized the cups were empty, my partner walked around to see if he could find the coffee. The coffee was with the cream and sugar. The coffee was ok, but it wasn't awesome. I didn't get a second cup. After a few minutes someone brought out our egg and toast breakfast. Did not look appetizing (see the picture) and it didn't taste any better. It was lukewarm at best. The egg was rubbery and the toast was soggy. It tasted exactly as I would expect it to taste if it had been pre-made and had been thrown in a microwave after we ordered. Not impressed and won't be back. read more

Great little place in Washington right along the river. Would be a nice walk when the weather finally warms up. My wife had their pre-selected flight (they run a special 4 coffee flight that changes with holidays/events/season) of coffee. She enjoyed all 4 flavors offered. I had the Mocha Picante. Tasted great and the heat was balanced well. We both had an egg on toast with bacon sandwich. Hers used gluten-free bread. Both were tasty. Atmosphere was fine with lots of seating wasn't very crowded but could see it being noisy with a few more people. It was a bit pricey ($3 for 2 slices of gf bread) but what isn't these days. Everyone we interacted with behind the counter and on the floor were nice and pleasant. Good service. Will certainly try it again. read more

Got a lavender honey iced latte. It was just OK. Overly sweet, barely tasted any lavender or honey. Coffee grounds in bottom of cup and super bitter. One theme of riding both the rails and the Katy trail were encountering so many friendly folks all weekend long. For our final stop at Undergrounds, that good energy kept on flowin' and I came away feeling that this was a really great spot. We were catching the train back so we needed a meal that was semi-quick (unlike Amtrak!) and not a whole sit-down affair. To add to it, Washington was having a town parade so the whole downtown was popping and we wouldn't be able to get in anywhere, especially decked out in spandex cycling gear. The whole vibe here was great, and they had a nice outdoor patio on an unseasonably cool summer day. I loaded up after a day of riding and tried/devoured: - A pineapple & greens smoothie (bottled, still delicious) - Grilled cheese with Billy Goat Chip co chips - Gooey Butter Cake All were really, really good. I particularly went nuts on the Gooey Butter Cake as it's regional and that's not something I have often in KC. We're glad to have loaded and left well fed because of course Amtrak was delayed several hours on our return trip home. I'd for sure grab a coffee next time if it was earlier in the day, and it is a very welcome addition to Washington, MO since my last trip there. read more

Coffee drinks were excellent as well as the breakfast we had: Arugula pesto avocado toast and spinach croissant. The toast, topped with a fried egg, was a great combination of flavors from the arugula pesto, diced rashishes, sliced avocado and a drizzle of Olivino balsamic (which added an unexpected sweetness) My wife's spinach croissant was savory, crunchy and buttery.
