I've only gone there to have blood work done, and even then, only because I couldn't get an appointment at any of the other locations, natch. My understanding is that this building was built back in the 1980s, maybe around the time they built the Galleria, with the thought that if they built one such building others would follow. Fast forward 40 years later and not only is this the only skyscraper in the area, it's one of the only (semi-) occupied structures on this accursed stretch of Brentwood Blvd. I imagine foot traffic is minimal, but I'd encourage anyone who just got off the MetroLink on their way to stab someone at the aforementioned Galleria to stop by and have a look. This place makes a mean Strawberry Matcha. It might honestly be better than the one I had at the Upshot in Clayton, which I passed on my run from here yesterday. It took all the strength of will I could muster to not stop and have a burrito, like when Bill Clinton used to stop at McDonald's on his runs back in the early '90s. Weirdly, I'm now the exact same age, and let's just say I get it. All of it. I love the fact that they give this drink to you not stirred, so you can see the separation between the milk, the strawberry syrup and the matcha (whatever that is). A girl I was with (but not "with," natch) remarked that it looked like an Italian flag. Also, it probably ensures that you're getting the various ingredients in the correct ratio. Sometimes you get these lattes, and they mostly just taste like milk. They're not putting enough syrup in them, and the issue might be that the syrup is visually indistinguishable from the rest of the drink. It's a brown-ish liquid in another brown-ish liquid. The only way to know if it's right would be to taste it, and I don't need some of these baristas tasting my drink. I don't know where their mouth has been. (Some of them could do literally anything and I'd be fine with it.) Anyway, it was a good drink. The burrito wasn't as good as the burrito at Upshot, but it might be the second best one that I've had, and I've had breakfast burritos from all over: Living Room, Bike Stop Cafe, Goshen Coffee Roasters. They give you the choice between bacon or a non-meat option. I didn't think to specify (the heat may have permanently damaged my brain), and they had the sense to give me bacon. Kudos! I like the fact that there's potato in addition to the bacon and egg, providing variety and heft. The monterey jack cheese gives it a vaguely southwestern vibe, and then the chipotle crema that comes with it (truly a miracle substance) really sets it off. I also got a Pesto and Parm Focaccia, on a recommendation from one of the girls in our group. I didn't need it, and if the taste was any indication, this was one of the least healthy things I've ever eaten--like an elevated Cheddar Bay Biscuit from Red Lobster, if you can imagine. But it was good, and it was further proof that this place knows what they're doing, weird name and location notwithstanding.

It makes you wonder what else there might be. PJ's claims to be a New Orleans coffee shop. What exactly is meant by that, I'm not sure. The coffee, at least in terms of the various preparations, seems to be the same coffee you'd get anywhere else. If you were to squint, I guess you could say that the decor on the inside is New Orleans themed. The exterior looks like the exterior of any chain establishment these days, including newer McDonald's, i.e. like a circa '09 Chipotle. Do the baristas flash you and allow you to throw beads at them? Sadly, no. I asked. Near the register there was an ad for a seasonal selection. I believe it was called a Peppermint Bark Velvet Ice, but I could be mistaken (indeed that doesn't sound like a very good name for a drink). It's not even Thanksgiving, and in fact, as I'm writing this, we're only one week removed from Halloween, but I'll allow it. I'm all PSLd out due to living near an Aldi. Anyway, this was perfect for me, because I could see what it looked like, and it spared me from having to investigate the menu further. As an inveterate brokie, I don't get coffee from fancy shops like this, but when I do, it needs to be something ridiculous, that someone might post on Instagram alongside a Labubu. I could get Folgers at home. They also carry beignets. Hence, presumably, the name. I got the smallest serving of the larger of the two sizes of beignets that they carry, which came with three of them. I'm not going to say what my total came to, out of embarrassment. I feel like a senior citizen who's just been sold a parcel of swamp land. Part of it is that I opted for a large drink. I was warned by the cashier that it comes in a very large cup. I told her that was no big deal, not realizing just how big it would be. This thing was an absolute unit, bigger than any reasonable person would need. They probably only keep it on the menu for idiots like me, who don't bother to check the actual size and price. It wasn't clear to me what was meant by velvet Ice, and it still isn't. I'd say it's along the lines of a frappe, with the caveat that I know very little about coffee drinks. The overall vibe was more chocolate than peppermint, but with bits of peppermint candy. It drinks more like an iced coffee than a milkshake, and you could slam one pretty quickly if you weren't paying attention, and you liked it that much. There's a generous whipped cream and chocolate syrup topping that doesn't melt down into the drink the way it would if the drink were hot. You end up eating it all at the end, as a sort of dessert to your dessert. Which brings us to the beignets. They're weirdly precise in their dimensions, like maybe they're heated up from frozen. They're served warm, and they're not given to you immediately, but it didn't occur to me to look and see how they were prepared. I'd describe these as being more like a dinner roll and less like a funnel cake, but not necessarily in a bad way. Ultimately, it's probably not possible to mess up a beignet. They're probably not nearly as good if you get them to go and end up eating them cold. Fortunately, I ate mine there. The seating area was nice, if maybe a little cramped, with a tiny sofa and a couple of comfy-looking chairs in addition to a row of tables. It was a veritable ghost town while we were there, so that ended up not being an issue. It was a Sunday, so people may have been at church, trying to get right with the Lord.

She had good things to say about it, but she said that, if I wanted something fruity or floral to try Haro Wachu from Ethiopia. It was as if she read my mind because I had been wanting to try a natural processed Ethiopian. I'm really glad I took her suggestion! It was one of the best cups of coffee I've ever tried. I didn't taste so much of a note of fruit in it, but I still loved it! I made sure to make a note of what it was in case I have room for more beans at home and want to order it. I'd suggest that people were there to visit downtown St. Charles, or whatever it's called, which has a certain old-timey charm to it, but everything else was closed--presumably until later in the day, but who knows. That fentanyl is a menace. Parking could be a pain, if it's not the wee hours of the morning on a weekend, and you're not ambulatory enough to walk from a block or two over, and yet you're going to get essentially the equivalent of a milkshake and a donut. Inside is rustic, inviting and larger than you'd think, with an upstairs area that I didn't bother to explore, due to lack of curiosity. We had a larger group and ended up pushing a few smaller tables together, plus a few chairs we borrowed from other tables. No one seemed to mind. The key is not to ask first. That mentality will take you far in both the world of finance and dating. I'm kind of over ordering food from coffee shops, where they're obviously just throwing something in the microwave and charging you $10 for it, but I needed something to eat. I'd just gone for a run. Their burrito looked like the textbook definition of cultural appropriation, but it also looked like it might not be half bad. I had their equivalent of an Egg McMuffin, called Ron's Breakfast Sandwich, or something to that effect. Essentially, this was a store-bought English muffin, a surprisingly generous and delicious helping of cheddar cheese, a few slices of seemingly prepackaged black forest ham and a fried egg. It was fine for what it was. Could the egg have been salted, could the muffin have been buttered and could the ham been an actual slice of Canadian bacon, or even better, American bacon? Sure, but I went into this with low expectations. The cheddar was melty and delicious, and weirdly abundant, but processed American cheese would have been more fitting for this kind of sandwich. You'd think a guy named Ron wouldn't object to processed foods. The caramel frappe I had was amazing. I got it with whole milk and whipped cream. I didn't bother to check and see if they charge you extra for whipped cream, which is the kind of crap some of these places have been known to pull. I got the 16 oz instead of the 20 oz, but it was probably still enough to take a day off the end of my life (when I don't need it as much anyway fwiw). Sometimes, when a food item tastes good enough, you can just tell it's not good for you, and that was the case with this drink. It was decidedly rich. I'm never in this part of town, and if I were, it would be at night, natch, but if things ever get to the point where they're clearly trending in that direction, I might start stopping by on the reg and getting that caramel frappe just to speed along the process of my demise.

I got the Matcha X Matcha from the 2026 winter menu. It was the perfect amount of sweet but still being able to taste the Matcha, which I really appreciate. I also got a cherry danish that was soo good. And if you tried love to try a flavored Matcha or some of their coffee. After I ordered the drink and pastry came out super quick, which was really exciting. Sometimes small cafés take a while to make drinks, especially Matcha. I will say the barista was nice, but not super friendly or talkative. I might've asked some more questions about the Matcha options, but it didn't seem like she wanted to have a conversation.
