What an odd name for a coffee shop located in the lobby of a medical office building. Er, I'm assuming this is a medical office building. I've only gone there to have blood work done, and even then, only because I couldn't get an appointment at any of the other locations, natch. My understanding is that this building was built back in the 1980s, maybe around the time they built the Galleria, with the thought that if they built one such building others would follow. Fast forward 40 years later and not only is this the only skyscraper in the area, it's one of the only (semi-) occupied structures on this accursed stretch of Brentwood Blvd. I imagine foot traffic is minimal, but I'd encourage anyone who just got off the MetroLink on their way to stab someone at the aforementioned Galleria to stop by and have a look. This place makes a mean Strawberry Matcha. It might honestly be better than the one I had at the Upshot in Clayton, which I passed on my run from here yesterday. It took all the strength of will I could muster to not stop and have a burrito, like when Bill Clinton used to stop at McDonald's on his runs back in the early '90s. Weirdly, I'm now the exact same age, and let's just say I get it. All of it. I love the fact that they give this drink to you not stirred, so you can see the separation between the milk, the strawberry syrup and the matcha (whatever that is). A girl I was with (but not "with," natch) remarked that it looked like an Italian flag. Also, it probably ensures that you're getting the various ingredients in the correct ratio. Sometimes you get these lattes, and they mostly just taste like milk. They're not putting enough syrup in them, and the issue might be that the syrup is visually indistinguishable from the rest of the drink. It's a brown-ish liquid in another brown-ish liquid. The only way to know if it's right would be to taste it, and I don't need some of these baristas tasting my drink. I don't know where their mouth has been. (Some of them could do literally anything and I'd be fine with it.) Anyway, it was a good drink. The burrito wasn't as good as the burrito at Upshot, but it might be the second best one that I've had, and I've had breakfast burritos from all over: Living Room, Bike Stop Cafe, Goshen Coffee Roasters. They give you the choice between bacon or a non-meat option. I didn't think to specify (the heat may have permanently damaged my brain), and they had the sense to give me bacon. Kudos! I like the fact that there's potato in addition to the bacon and egg, providing variety and heft. The monterey jack cheese gives it a vaguely southwestern vibe, and then the chipotle crema that comes with it (truly a miracle substance) really sets it off. I also got a Pesto and Parm Focaccia, on a recommendation from one of the girls in our group. I didn't need it, and if the taste was any indication, this was one of the least healthy things I've ever eaten--like an elevated Cheddar Bay Biscuit from Red Lobster, if you can imagine. But it was good, and it was further proof that this place knows what they're doing, weird name and location notwithstanding. read more

One of my favorite coffee spots in town. I love a good lavender latte and their spring/summer Honey Lavender latte is top 5 all time in my book. Their food menu is amazing as well, I love their breakfast sandwich and everything I've tried from the bakery window. I always get an iced caramel latte, and they rank well amongst other lattes I've tried. It was cold too by the time it got to me. Taste was good. It's a cool place with both an upstairs and a downstairs. Seems like a lot of people go there to work and spend a good amount of time there. I remember stopping by this place years ago, and the coffee was good, but there wasn't anything that jumped out at me and made me want to come back. I finally returned, and this might as well be a completely different store. On this Sunday that I stopped in, people were all over, some socializing, some working, some grabbing food. Came back to give them another try. This time i was definitely impressed. The young lady working the register was friendly and welcoming. I was informed by the manager to come back and get my drink remade on the house. I showed the workers the message and my review, but they were unaware of what was going on. They quickly got on top of it and reached out to the owner for clarification and got me together. I ordered a honey Lavender Latte (iced). It was so delicious. It was not overly sweet and you can definitely taste both the honey and lavender. This may be my go to drink. I also ordered the breakfast Sammie. It's a breakfast sandwich with bacon, fried egg, cheese, and cinnamon butter on sourdough bread. They toasted the bread perfectly and sprinkled it with a touch of sea salt. I should've gotten a side of cinnamon butter or a little extra to incorporate a little more sweetness to balance out the salty. It was delicious and filling. I f*cking love Coma Coffee. It is the perfect work from home / study / hangout spot. The food is great and I'm glad they have such a robust menu. Their drinks are also fabulous and I've been working my way through their menu. I gotta say the lavender latte is a favorite. Definitely wanna go back and try their cold brew with the chocolate cold foam! I will say for remote workers it can get a little loud. So bring your noise canceling headphones and make sure your laptop / devices are charged cause they don't have a ton of outlets either. I came in to test Coma out as a coffee shop to get some work done outside of my home office. Came in on a Friday late morning. Most of the tables downstairs were already taken but I lucked out and someone was leaving as I arrived. Didn't have a chance to peek upstairs but it seemed pretty busy. Variety of coffee beverages, including seasonal specials! I had a dirty turmeric latte special which had good flavor but note that is comes iced by default. Appreciates the variety of breakfast and lunch options but will say that the prices are kind of high for what you get. Definitely recommend a biscuit though! Great texture and flavor! read more

I stopped into Coma Coffee looking forward to trying something new and interesting--a strawberry matcha latte with a shot of espresso. Unfortunately, my experience from the moment I walked in was uncomfortable and disappointing. I was greeted at the register by a staff member who was dry and disinterested. I placed my order and sat near the bar to wait. While my drink was being made, I overheard two baristas talking about it. One barista began preparing the drink by adding strawberry syrup to the milk, while the other mixed the matcha and espresso together. Midway through, one said to the other, "Why are you doing it like that? It makes the drink not as pretty." Despite this comment, they continued anyway and handed me the drink, fully aware it didn't look right. It ended up being an unappetizing brown-green color. That interaction alone made me feel like I was being handed something they weren't proud of. It felt careless and awkward--especially as a customer who paid for a specific, customized drink. Feeling uneasy about the whole thing, I went back to the register and explained what I saw and heard. Instead of an apology or any attempt to make it right, I got a half-hearted explanation about the "buoyancy" of espresso and matcha--something I know isn't the real issue. It felt dismissive and insincere, like they were brushing me off rather than addressing my concern. At the end of the day, it's not just about how the drink looked (though it looked bad)--it's about how I was made to feel. If the staff openly criticize how a drink is being made in front of the customer and then serve it anyway, it sends the message that quality and customer experience don't matter. All we got were coffees for this visit but it was really good! I got a sugar cookie latte and it wasn't super super sweet, which I prefer! It also didn't leave my teeth scummy like some places do. Also, even though we didn't get food, the baked goods were so tempting. They had some cookies and scones, and a couple muffins too. It was a modern vibe but still cozy. The upstairs was especially inviting because of all the sofas and comfy chairs, whereas downstairs is more tables. We found some comfy chairs downstairs and just had nice time being out. This place is sort of tucked away and I didn't realize it replaced the Skybar until I got here. When I walked in, I was taken aback that it was two stories! It truly has a little dabble of everything, which is great when you can't figure out what you want to eat. I met with a friend and while I was going to get one of the hash bowls, I opted last minute to get the pesto and Parmesan foccacia instead, as well as a chocolate chip cookie to go. They heated up my focaccia and off we went. The foccacia roll was reminiscent of the focaccia they used to sell at Bread co, except this was better. It was super light and airy, with the perfect amount of Parmesan and pesto inside. It's def. light and while I was worried I'd be full, I was eagerly awaiting my next one! My friend ordered a cappuccino and I loved how they made the design with the milk. When you're done eating, they kindly ask that you buss your own table and provided a bin for you to place your dishes in.
