Popped Into this place because they were advertising a Wagyu Corndog. Well I needed to try it of course. It was not busy so walked right up and order a Wagyu Corndog Combo (with fries and a fountain drink). I also ordered the peppercorn ranch dip for my Corndog (extra charge). Well I have to say they did not disappoint. The corndog was so good. Very good flavor and the cornmeal breading was very satisfying. The peppercorn ranch was also good too but I ended up using it for my sidewinder fries (I like dipping my Corndog in mustard). I have never had sidewinder fries before and I thoroughly enjoyed them. And they opened out this outlet for 44 Farms to sell their ground beef, so nothing goes to waste. A lot of beef in the burgers. Located inside of the Houston Farmer's Market, Underbelly Burger came into the scene just 3 years ago and is a part of the Underbelly Hospitality family. Their mission was simple, which was to specialize in locally sourced meats to create the the best burger in Houston. While I think it's a good burger, it's far from being the best. The vibe is casual and comfortable. The crowd has always been very light during each of my visits, but there is enough seating for a quality solo meal or small group. Since they close at 6pm daily, I imagine the lunch crowd is proably their busiest time here. Service is quite good overall, but one's mileage will vary as always. One thing I like immediately is the fact both their burgers are double patty and very simple with lettuce, tomato, American cheese, and their house sauce. The 44 Farms Angus burger is my preferred of the two, but the R-C Ranch Wagyu is certainly no slouch. The quality of the meat is definitely good, but doesn't pack the hype that I had hoped. They also have a vegetarian version (housemade veggie burger), which is on par with their bacon sausage hot dog for being somewhat unmemorable. The chicken sandwich is a notch above both, especially when combined with those ranch powdered fries. I have also indulged in their milkshakes a time or two, and I think the cookies and cream is my preferred shake of the bunch. When I first came a couple of years ago, I thought the prices were a tad high for the portion, but now I think the prices are normalized. Foodflation can be such a jerk sometimes. I do think that Underbelly Burger still serves as a necessary option at the Farmers Market. Despite the initial look of this burger, it was delicious! I had the wagyu burger combo, which will set you back a total of $20 with tax. It's not a ton of food, but it's plenty. The burger itself is wonderful, no suggestions on how to make it better. The ranch fries while perfectly cooked, could have used a bit more of that ranch flavor. It looks like they had tea available, but no sweetener. Also the only sauce I saw was ketchup despite a review that talked about other sauces. ‍ The interior of the restaurant has a fast food, almost five guys vibe. However it looks like it just wasn't finished being decorated. Not sure if that was the aesthetic that they are going for or if my friend put it, "It looks like their tile guy just kind of quit." I've been meaning to get by here for a while now after hearing about this restaurants' opening. It's located at the Houston Farmers Market on Airline with a lot of parking available (unless it's a weekend when it get very busy). Underbelly Burger is located behind the produce market on the north side. Inside it is small with seating for about 14 people and is a counter service restaurant with a self serve fountain drink machine along with ice tea. A couple of ice tubs offers a few beers and hard ciders too. I ordered the Angus Burger for $12 and added the combo (fries and drink) for another $5. With tax the meal was a little over $18 and they offer a Wagyu burger for $2 more. My meal was ready in about 10 minutes and with no seating available inside I was forced to go outside on a very windy day. There, the Farmers Market has several uncovered tables and chairs. The burger is a double meat patty job that was dressed with lettuce, tomato and pickle but no onion offered. Also it comes with cheese which I had them hold. Those ingredients are then put on a small sized sesame seed bun. The burger was good tasting and while small it was also thick with the two beef patties. The fries were of an unusual design as they resembled curly potato logs in their thickness and were seasoned. I liked them too. By the way, ketchup is offered at the counter in small containers and be sure to ask for two as they are small. This was a decent meal that I feel deserves a 3 score. If you come here take into consideration the weather (if you are not getting it to go) as you will probably have to sit outside to eat it. This restaurant really should have more inside seating. The other consideration is cost. Without beer or a milkshake a meal will cost over $18 and it didn't stand out to me as being worth that price point. The burger had an excellent balance of ooziness, cheese, and flavor. As far as the burger is concerned, this one is solid. They had some oldies playing and it had that old timer diner feel which was cool. I'd really have to second almost everything in Mike M.'s review below. To add a few things: The hours are a bit challenging. 11a-6p comes across as being open for half of dinner. I really wanted to give this a try sooner, but there was no way I could get over here on a weeknight -- location is not the most central within the Loop. The decor was really boring. Having heard great things about Wild Oats decor, and recalling Hay Merchant, there's virtually nothing on the walls. They seem to be starting a collection of burger memorabilia below the counter and I really like they grow this! The burger's taste was really meaty. That was pretty cool, since premium meat is the highlight of this burger spot! I do wish they offered onions on the base burger, or had more of a customize-your-burger approach. A single patty option might also be nice for those who just want a snack after walking the market. I really want this place to succeed -- but at present, it feels a little direction-less which is shocking to say about an Underbelly restaurant. Given the choice, I'd probably pick lunch at a spot like Mia's Table or even The Burger Joint over Underbelly Burger in the current format. There's a lot of potential with this location (maybe live music at the little park here? A dog menu to pair with a play area in the little park?). Look forward to seeing how they evolve. read more

Went today after seeing they were open on Instagram. I was definitely excited to try this place but I will say I was a little disappointed. The food was fine, tasty burger and fries, but it was very expensive for what you get. I got a burger, fries and a drink and my total came out to $23.42. It was honestly just a normal tasting burger so the price didn't really match my expectations. I also saw them pouring the fries into the frier from a frozen bag, I would've expected them to be making their fries from fresh potatoes in-house, given the price range. On another note, this place is located at the Houston Farmers Market, a place I frequent very often to buy my produce, Mexican candy, and mole. Wether this is the fault of Underbelly or the market management, I couldn't help but feel some fear that having a place like Underbelly here could bring gentrification to the farmers market. I just hope the existing vendors and customer base are not negatively impacted by having such an expensive and trendy place added to the market, and that Underbelly is being responsible and mindful of their potential impact. This was fun to visit, but I gotta say, this sort of underwhelmed me after eating the cease and decist for years at Haymerchant. Glad I tried it, but not going in my burger rotation. Love a lot of his other concepts, just not sold on this one yet. My waygu burger was tasty, and I thought a reasonable buy for the cost, but cooked well past what I expected. Not dry quite yet, but dense and crumbly, nearing the point of no return. I will say the fries were rockin, and staff all very kind. Seating is meh, and timing is everything here. Best way to describe "Underbelly" Burger is a simple "Underwhelming". First visit, and probably last, was earlier today while we were visiting the "new" Houston Farmers Market for the first time since the "remodeling". Being a native Houstonian and having grown up with the "Airline Farmers Market" it was sad walking up and down the isles without the crude vegetable stands with the families selling their goods. Seems a few of the old vendors are still there, but the big sheds in the back selling bulk vegetable are gone. Now there are new "eating" places along the paths. In comes my visit to Underwhelming Underbelly. Feels like going into a Burger King or Whataburger with much fewer seating options; they can only seat about 14 or 15 people inside with the rest moving outside to find a table or chairs in the common area where the kids are playing. Very stark, institutional feel in the restaurant; the warmth of a school cafeteria. So much for the structure and atmosphere and on to the food. With Chris Shepherd being a James Beard Award winning chef, and visits to his other restaurants, my expectations were high; but unmet. Wanting to sample as much as possible from the menu, I ordered the Chicken Sandwich ($12) and my wife order the 44 Farms Angus Burger ($12, a combo with fries and a soft drink comes for another 5 bucks), along with the Twisty Fries. Sad to say the Chicken Sandwich was a BIG disappointment with it's thin chicken patty that appear to be a thigh as a large portion of it was dark, covered with thin batter which lacked a crispiness typically associated with fried chicken sandwiches. The bun was a flat squashed plain bun that appeared to have been stored under sack of potatoes (noticeable in the photo attached) prior to seeing my sandwich. Most redeeming quality of the Chicken Sandwich was the "sauce' and pickles. Quite a disappointment when compared to the new wave of chicken sandwiches coming from everyone from Popeye's to Nashville style hot chicken. BTW - you can get THREE Popeye's chicken sandwiches for the same price as ONE Underbelly chicken sandwich, and just one of of Popeye's has a larger piece of chicken, about twice the size of UBB's. I missed getting a photo of the Angus Burger, but I'll try to give you a good verbal description instead. The burger was spitting image of a McDonald's Double Cheese Burger with patties a bit larger, but the same diameter. The patties had a good flavor but overly salty, and overcooked (dry) for my liking. Served with usual lettuce, tomatoes, pickle and house sauce. While the menu stated "All Beef PATTY" not PATTIES, it had two thin patties rather that a single juicy thick patty. The assembly of the burger was mess, thrown together and with a mashed bun similar to the chicken sandwich; but it was covered with sesame seeds which was a big plus. In summary your better off going to Popeye's for your chicken sandwiches and MUCH better off going to Beck's Prime for you burgers. Beck's is light years ahead of UBB's burger and still 25 cents less!! read more

Located in the Houston Farmer's Market - I was excited to see new restaurants added to the Market. Underbelly Burger has a simple menu with a retro look and feel. Basically burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes and drinks. They have a Wagu and an Angus burger. Both come with their house sauce, processed American cheese-food, lettuce pickles and tomato. They have a small indoor seating area and there is plenty of outdoor covered seating. I got the Angus burger and their seasoned fries. While not bad - the burger was fairly average. Two thin beef patties griddled to well done. They had a nice sear on the patties and a decent salty taste. However, the texture was a bit chewy given what I assume to be good quality beef. The bun and toppings were of good quality and (again) very traditional. The spiral cut fries were decent with a nice seasoning that did not overpower. I felt the fries were a bit unevenly cooked. Some portions were pleasing crisp - but others had centers that seemed only partially cooked. To be honest, given Chris Shepherd other great restaurants and Alison Cook's rave review I was a bit disappointed. read more
