In the days before nearly every type of cuisine suddenly was a finger tap away, there was an essential need to have the phone number for a good Chinese takeout place willing to do deliveries. Remember those days? ...Bueller? Oh yeah, I'm on Yelp. Well, for better or worse, Uncle Wong reminds me of that type of place even though I've never set foot in the place. I was just in the mood for Chinese one stormy night and found the kind of menu I used to see printed on pink paper with a drawing of bamboo on the cover. Remember those? Oh never mind. I ordered the $13.95 Eggplant Chicken (photo: https://bit.ly/3BguDK9). It was a hearty portion with white onion added and quite lacquered with the unmistakable brown sauce. By contrast, the $10.95 Black Mushroom with Chinese Tenders was also a hearty portion and similarly lacquered but not with brown sauce (photo: https://bit.ly/3uwcbte). Just a lot of bok choy. That was it. It wasn't extraordinary, but I'd be lying if I didn't say it hit the spot. It also appears to meet the impulsive need for standard grade takeout Chinese food I have every now and then. FOOD - 3 stars...big servings that meet expectations AMBIANCE - n/a...gee, how should I know? SERVICE - 4 stars...it was quick and neatly packaged TOTAL - 3 stars...sometimes middling is good RELATED - Exploring El Cerrito? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: http://bit.ly/2VyCP18

Uncle Wongs wonton soup.

The won ton soup is no longer any good. The won tons are doughy the meat inside is unseasoned. The to go order no longer packs the broth separately. The people were very nice. All orders are to go now. Had to upgrade vegetable to get bok choy instead of broccoli in the soup. Broccoli doesn't go in won ton soup. Yuck.

Uncle Wong you're pretty solid. Great lunch special at $10 with an entree/rice, soup and a spring roll. Also appreciate how you pay attention to orders and get the details right. Never eaten inside the restaurant and have only had delivery. Delivery service is always very efficient and the food comes steaming hot.

Joined some friends here. Won ton soup was good, Mishu chicken was good, pot stickers were good. I like the shrimp fried rice but not enough shrimp. The crispy chicken was tasty but ok not my favorite but hubby loved it. Prices were good. A family service. Very kind people. . The music was difficult to take. It was a violin sound that made me feel like my cavity fillings were gonna jump out of me and run out of the restaurant

Great consistent food. My go to spot for good Chinese food. Ambience isn't the best for this place but I personally order takeout.

A 5:30 dinner on a Tuesday evening. Hong Kong Cafe appears to be the better restaurant for a…read morereasonably priced family meal. We took advantage of one of the set menus. Last time, we got the $88 dinner and added three dishes. This time, I ordered the $168 dinner. I found out after I placed the order that instead of picking from the left side for the less expensive menu and the right side for the more expensive menu, we can select from either side for either menu! We also added one dish because my wife insisted that we needed more veg! Our server presented us with a bowl of House Soup. It was a great way to get our stomachs ready for the deluge of dinner about to happen! Whole Roast Duck - 3 - We had dinner the previous night at another Chinese restaurant and had a Peking Duck. It was odd that the Peking Duck was more moist than our Roast Duck. Yes, the fatty parts were fatty but the non-fatty parts were dry. Braised Beef Stew - 4 - Lots of beef. Excellent sauce. Missing Tendons and Daikon. Honey Walnut Shrimp - 3 - Even under the flavor of the sauce, I could tell that some of the shrimp weren't as fresh as they should be. No one else said anything so I let it go. Peking Rib - 5 - If I drank beer, this would be an excellent dish to nosh on while doing so. Crispy Fried Flounder - 4 - The flounder was okay, but the fins and tail didn't get super crispy so we could enjoy them as chips. The other thing that may have made it better for us might be a sweet and sour sauce. Chicken with Mixed Mushrooms - 4 - Yep, I'm a mushroom freak. I could care less about the chicken, but mushrooms? I'm there. Stir-fried Clams in Black Bean Sauce - 4 - These were okay. My wife said she got a bunch of empty shells. That happens sometimes. No idea what other people got. Chicken Chow Mein - 5 - got the skinny noodles fried soy sauce chow mein style. Yummy! Snap Pea Beef - 4 - Beef was tender. Could have used more snap peas. Overall, a decent dish. I also included pictures of the two "set" menus. Note that $88 comes with a 1/2 Royal Chicken while $168 comes with a whole Roast Duck. Service was okay. Food came in spurts. Soup. Wait. Two dishes. Wait. Wait. Wait. Most everything else. Wait. Last three dishes.

Usually love it, but bad experience today. 2:30 pm, 9/4/25. Not very busy. Service was very slow…read more Coconut chicken soup was just ok. Chicken was not flavorful. Found two hairs inside. Come on, HK, you can do better.

Two members of staff were constantly fast-walking or running around trying to take care of all the guests. There was also another staff member who appeared to work pretty efficiently without running. Our two friends that we were dining with are regulars here and had their favorite menu items memorized. I did not take any pictures of their food or ask them to rate it. They were very quick in decided what they wanted while we dawdled. In addition to our lunch plates, we were served Chicken Corn Soup first. Because we're greedy, we also ordered Ho Toa Tee Fuo Wonton Soup for the table. This is a deep-fried wonton in soup. The deep-frying changes the texture and flavor of the wonton in the most wonderful way. Everything came out relatively quickly and as expected. My Fish Fillet in Curry Sauce is not on the menu but still came out pretty good. I would have liked a little more sauce and some more heat, but I would order it again. The only thing I would suggest that they change is the rice that they serve. Not all long-grain rices' are of the same quality and some are simply more tender and absorbent of sauces which would raise the dining experience.

Nostalgic and great quality!…read more My family used to come here often when we lived in the Bay Area so we had to stop by while we were in town. The menu items looked the same as they were back in the 90s which made me excited to order. We got noodles soups, dim sum, and fried rice to go. The restaurant is outdated and the door can use some maintenance. A few people got whacked in the face because it was difficult to open. For to-go orders, you go straight to the counter in the back to order. I was told the wait was 30 mins since we ordered a good amount of food. The timing was perfect! I came in at the 30-minute mark and he had just finished packing my order. Everything was piping hot. The noodle soup came with plump wontons and a lot of meat! The har gow wrappers were delicate but did not easily fall apart. The siu mai were meaty and tender. We got hot oil on request and it was spicy! I didn't expect it to be as spicy as it was. It's delicious but definitely try some before dumping the entire container into your soup like I did.

One star for poor service and an owner who would not take responsibility…read more About three or four months ago, I stopped at Daimo with greasy hands and politely asked for a napkin. A waitress refused because I wasn't eating there that day. I explained that I was a regular customer and usually left a good tip, but she still refused. I ended up taking one napkin myself. About two months ago, I went there for breakfast with another person. We ordered shrimp and beef rice noodle rolls, wonton soup, preserved egg and pork congee, oyster sauce gai lan, and white cut chicken. The restaurant was almost empty, but we waited about 20 minutes without any food. We repeatedly asked for cold and hot water, and our waitress was often nowhere to be found. When the manager finally brought the cold water, she put it down with a loud bang, splashing water onto the table. The bill was nearly $100 including the tip. I left my phone number in a Google review, but the owner never contacted me. A few weeks ago, I spoke to him in person. He seemed sorry, but said very little and offered no clear response. Despite these experiences, I continued ordering through DoorDash and Uber Eats. The nearby Hong Kong Cafe doesn't have great service either, but I think its food tastes better than Daimo's. Hong Kong Cafe closes at 9:30 p.m., while Daimo stays open later, so sometimes I ordered from Daimo because the other restaurant was already closed. About three days ago, I returned to buy a roast duck and spoke to the owner again. This time, he said he was not the waitresses' father or mother and could not control them, as if their behavior was not his responsibility. They are his employees, serving customers in his restaurant. Their rude service hurts his business, and his dismissive response made things worse. I will not return. My number is 341-333-8950 if the owner wants to discuss this.

FYI, the pan fried buns take a bit of additional time and come piping hot. I would wait a few minutes before eating, or check out a video on @yelpbayarea of how to eat soup dumplings! Another note, you order from an iPad that's handed to you upon arrival once seated. Make sure after you 'add items to cart' you submit your order. We left that step out and didn't realize until a few minutes later. Staff is friendly and make sure to ask if anything additional is needed like napkins, etc. Overall a fun experience, fair pricing, located in the hustle and bustle of the mall, and cool digs if you're looking for a comfortable dining experience without the frills.

Came here looking for dim sum for dinner. When we were sat down, we didn't see any dim sum options,…read moreso we quickly resorted to whatever was on the menu. We opted for the Beef Chow Fun Dry and the Mixed BBQ Plate. The Beef Chow Fun Dry was excellent. Loved the tender pieces of beef with this dish. They were quite flavorful. The chow fun noodles were cooked nicely. They were also seasoned well. It was not too salty. The dish had some bean sprouts, onions, and green onions. The bean sprouts gave this dish a nice crunch and vegetable element. The green onions were quite crispy. The Mixed BBQ Plate was pretty good. It had an assortment of different meats: roasted duck, cold steamed chicken, BBQ pork (Char Siu), crispy pork belly, and chopped jellyfish. The plate also came with some seaweed salad and three different sauces for the meats. The roasted duck was good. It was cooked nicely and had a wonderful flavor. There was enough meat to enjoy it and the bones weren't too much of a bother to remove. The sauce it came with was good. Loved its sweet and savory flavor. The cold steamed chicken was nice. The meat was tender and seasoned nicely. It wasn't too salty. The chef did an excellent job cooking the breast meat. It was very enjoyable to eat. The scallion sauce it came with was good. Loved the salty and savory flavor of the oil and scallion mixture with the chicken meat. The BBQ pork (char siu) was okay. It had a wonderful flavor of sweet and savory. The meat felt a little bit tough. Despite this, we were able to enjoy the meal. We should have opted to pair our meat with steamed rice. The crispy pork belly was nice. Loved the crunch and the salty flavor. The sauce it came with was sweet and tart. Loved how it paired well with the pork. Our regret was not pairing it with steamed rice. The jellyfish was quite a surprise. I loved the flavor and texture. The flavor was sweet, spicy, and slightly sour. The spice was pretty mild, but enjoyable. Loved the flavor of the jellyfish. The texture was chewy, but good. Great pairing with the other meats. The dish also had some clumps of seaweed. Despite it not being much, the flavors were good. Gave the plate a different color and its vegetable element. The meats were the definite highlight of the dish. We were served a nice fragrant tea before our meal. At the end, we were served a sweet and warm red bean soup. It was very nice of the staff to offer us this soup on the house. We were quite intrigued by the live seafood tanks in the restaurant. The 3 big crabs were the most appealing. We enjoyed our meal too much to take a picture. Loved the decor of the place. The place looks very well maintained. Service was excellent. We didn't have to wait too long to get seated. Our food came on time and the staff was very friendly upon our visit. It was very nice of them to pack up our leftovers. Shrimp Dumpling and Shiu Mai were good. Chaozhou Dumpling was too spicy with too much pepper. This is one of the Dumplings I used to like and ordered every time. The Pan Fried Veggie Meat Bun was not the traditional bun that I expected. So disappointed. The soy sauce with the BBQ Pork Rice Noodle Roll was tasteless like water, which is bad because the soy sauce is the most important part when you eat the Rice Noodle Roll. The Wasabi Pork Tripe with Chicken should be mixed together without chicken bones. This time they just put the Chicken and Pork Tripe separately on the plate and served. The Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf was delicious, rice was soft and fresh. The Fried Stuffed Pork Dumpling and the Fried Shrimp Ball were crunchy which I liked. For dessert, we ordered Egg Custard Tart and The Fruit Tapioca Mix, which were the perfect match. Yummy! The dining room has a super big TV. It wasn't very noisy there. We went there on a weekday. This is a Dim Sum restaurant that we have been eating at for many years. We will try to eat here again soon.

UPDATED 1-STAR REVIEW -- MY EXPERIENCE YESTERDAY…read more I had already written a negative review about this business about six months ago after an unpleasant experience. Unfortunately, what happened yesterday made my impression even worse. Yesterday, I was sitting peacefully outside the mall's north entrance, about 20-30 meters away from Hong Kong Snack House. I was not inside the store, blocking its entrance, or interfering with its business. Most importantly, THE CHAIR DID NOT BELONG TO HONG KONG SNACK HOUSE. I got it from the area near 99 Ranch Market, where there are several similar chairs. Hong Kong Snack House has similar-looking chairs, but theirs have labels on the backs. The chair I was using was not theirs. This issue actually started earlier. The owner had previously complained about me to a mall janitor. That janitor approached me several times about the chair. After that, whenever I encountered him around the mall, he would stare at me in a very unfriendly and intimidating way. Yesterday, the situation escalated. The owner complained about me again, this time to a security guard, who came specifically to question me. I directly asked the guard whether the owner had approached him first, and he confirmed that he had. The explanation was that a homeless person might steal the chair. That makes very little sense to me. This is a cheap, lightweight chair that looks like it is worth perhaps $5. It is still a full-size chair that someone would have to carry away. Why would anyone steal a bulky $5 chair just to sell it for perhaps $2? More importantly, THE CHAIR WAS NOT THIS BUSINESS OWNER'S PROPERTY IN THE FIRST PLACE. I was sitting peacefully outside, far away from his store and bothering nobody. Yet first a janitor repeatedly approached me, and now security became involved. Given my unpleasant experience with this business six months ago and the negative review I posted afterward, these repeated complaints made me feel deliberately targeted, harassed, and retaliated against. I simply do not understand why a business owner would repeatedly involve mall employees and security over someone sitting quietly far outside his store on a chair that does not even belong to him. I strongly urge Pacific East Mall management to look into these repeated confrontations. After this experience, I will not patronize Hong Kong Snack House again.
