We've eaten at Uncle Julio's dozens of times -- a basic 3* experience most of the time when eating in.
Delivery Review: Our power at home was still out from the Nor'easter, so we were staying at a hotel 2.9 miles (a 9-minute drive) west of the Reston Town Center location.
We ordered delivery because we needed to get our young kids ready for bed in an unfamiliar setting -- thinking ordering delivery would save us time, given one of us would have needed to leave the other with the kids and drive up and back to the restaurant.
Based on the advertised "30-45 minute" delivery estimate, we ordered via delivery.com (redirected from Yelp) at 6:15p -- anticipating our food to arrive around 7:00p.
We ordered fajitas for one (marked up to $27.49), two kids meals (a taco for $7.49 + a kidsadilla for $7.24), and guacamole ($12.49). These four items added to a subtotal of $54.71 + $3.54 for tax. A $3.99 delivery fee was added, plus a $4.32 "convenience fee" (presumably only that amount because we were 2.9 miles / 9 minutes away).
BEWARE of the deceptive tip practice on delivery.com orders. There is a "required tip" (of 15%) added to the delivery and convenience fees. For our order that was $8.21. On the delivery.com order screen, a "tip" defaults to 15% -- and if you want to adjust it, you can do so. However, because it is defaulted to 15%, you may think your order does not already include the "required" 15% tip. It turns out, it does. So, when you click on [submit] to complete your order, you become suddenly aware you indeed tipped the required 15% (because it was already included); but, unless you unselect the default 15%, you end up tipping a total of the "required tip" + whatever you leave selected or adjust. In our case (since we left the default 15% selected -- thinking that was the "required tip"), their app actually charges you an additional 15% tip. Consequently, we ended up tipping a total of 30% -- or $16.42 on a $58 meal. I wonder how many others have been "ripped off" by this deceptive feature.
As if the price tag and deceptive tip practice wasn't bad enough, the delivery company contracted with delivery.com called and said they were "running behind," and said our order would arrive closer to 7:40-7:45p (40-45 minutes after what we were expecting when we placed the order). They must have been running really really behind, because our food arrived at just before 8:00p. "Running behind" should not expand the order window from a 30-45 minute estimate to nearly two hours!
To cap off our frustration, the food was delivered cold. We needed to reheat everything in the hotel microwave to enjoy it warm. We were also surprised at how pathetic the orders were. The fajitas for one (at $27) were 5 strips of cold steak, 3.5 strips of cold chicken, and hardly any grilled peppers and onions. In the restaurant, there is plenty... and it is cheaper ($19). For $27, you'd expect a slightly better experience. Instead, it was the opposite. Similarly, a kidsadilla dining in is $5.99, but $7.24 for delivery. Instead of getting a quesadilla sliced into four pieces, for delivery we got three pieces heaped into a sloppy mess. Our kid's taco order is $5.99 in store and $7.49 for delivery (if you do like we did and shift it to order a soft taco). Ours was delivered as a crispy taco, and was mostly lettuce -- which as you parents know, kids just love.
In summary, instead of enjoying a family meal from a restaurant we frequent, we felt completely ripped off by delivery.com. Unlike the dining-in experience, the food was cold... and worse yet, was mediocre and meager at best -- especially considering we ordered so little and paid $82+ for the meal. As you can see from the pictures, the fajitas we received were hardly worth $27... and the kids meals were a sloppy and disheveled disappointment (in addition to not being made as we ordered and paid a little extra for). Thus, I am writing this review as a warning to others to never use Uncle Julio's for delivery. Go there and enjoy a basic meal while dining in, but never ever order delivery. read more
