Uncle Chen's has never been fabulous but it was about the best Crown Point had. I ordered some Chicken Egg Fu Yung Tuesday evening and it was just awful! The rice was "crunchy". The gravy was nearly solid like jello. The egg Fu Yung patties were thick and full of gigantic pieces of vegetables, not very well cooked and hard to chew. Not even close to bite size! I don't know what happened but based on this visit they don't even deserve one star when they would normally be a 3-1/2. read more

My first complaint here is we ordered vegetarian rolls. Reason being, my daughter is allergic to fish We received shrimp in our roll! Maybe in other countries shrimp is a vegetable? Even with the shrimp there was only chopped lettuce! The taste was bland.Sweet and sour chicken. Still trying to decide where the sweet and sour fits in! The Roast Pork Fied rice. The rice was hard (overcooked?) and the roast pork tasted like it sat in water. No taste at all. Please, Please is there any Great Chineese place in Indiana. Had high hopes for this one; looking for an easy regular ol' Chinese take out in Northwest Indiana has turned out harder than I thought it would be. Picked up lunch for 4 on a weekday afternoon and was super impressed how well boxed-up our lunches were. I felt like it was a good sign! But that was the best part of our experience that day. Terrible food I usually get shrimp and lobster sauce at Chinese restaurants but there's had peas and mushrooms and also the sauce was sweet taste terrible also order lo mien noodles they were clumped together and were really really bad tasted like they were burnt! Pretty disappointing. We got the chicken with Chinese vegetables. The dish was prepared in some kind of fish oil or they had just prepared a seafood dish in the same pan before ours. It was very fishy. They only had white rice and fried rice and choices for rice. The fried was was terribly overpriced since there was no vegetables or other goodies added to it at all. The rice looked brown, but it was the oil that out was fried in and it tasted bad. Other similiar Chinese restaurants have brown rice as an option and their fried rice has peas, carrots and scrambled egg pieces. We won't be going back there. read more

Uncle Chen's has a wide variety of excellent food. I am a fan of their Mongolian Beef. Very tasty egg rolls and rice offerings. The restaurant is also very clean which in today's world is important. Prices are affordable. My whole family loves the place. I give Uncle Chen 5 stars. read more

Never seen such a cheap money saving screw job before from a Chinese place, what happened to rice on the side in a carton and full orders of what I actually ordered! Won't be coming back. Used to be the best Asian food around but not any more. Everything has changed. The fried rice used to be excellent but it is sticky and lacks flavor now. Chicken fat, anyone? We ordered the Hot Pepper Chicken and Hot & Sour soup. The soup had no 'tang'; it reminded me of egg drop soup. The 'chicken' in the meal consisted of 'puffs' of something, resembling deep fried dumplings. I took the 'chicken' dish back to the store: the lady insisted that the 'dumplings' were cooked chicken, so I tore several apart to show her that there was NO MEAT in them. They MIGHT have been deep fried chicken fat, but they weren't meat. She was adamant that the meal was fine. I left the 'meal' there, as I wasn't going to eat it, and so I was out $14.25 plus tax. If you want deep fried chicken fat puffs, order the Hot Pepper Chicken. This establishment used to be good: I will never walk through their doors again. read more

I originally went to Uncle Chen's because the reviews were great, however, I am highly underwhelmed. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken which lacked crisp and actual meat, as most of my pieces were entirely too fatty to consume. I also ordered the Steak Lo Mein and what a waste. The steak did not have steak texture or taste, and the entire dish was highly under seasoned. The egg roll was decent. Overall, I will not be back and I'm not sure what's going on with these other eaters taste buds, or maybe I just went on a bad day. Regardless, this place goes on the bottom of my list of Chinese restaurants...ever. read more

I used to eat lunch here quite often when I worked in Crown Point. I consider this place a Chinese greasy spoon. I mean this as a complement. I now reside in Michigan , but whenever I am within driving distance, I stop here for lunch. Good hot food, very basic dining room. Inexpensive in my estimation. This is one of the better small, family run Chinese restaurants around the area. And from my experience having lived in various places around the Midwest, not all small, family run Chinese restaurants are equally good. This is by far one of the better ones! My family has been going there since not long after it opened in 1996. I have noticed that they can make both the fried and steamed rice pretty well (very important for a Chinese restaurant). I have also noticed that, for some reason, they have always have had their cans of pop cooled to exactly the right temperature to give them the best taste possible. The egg rolls, sugar biscuits, and almond cookies are also very good. Heck, they can even make steamed broccoli taste good! Their lunch specials are a particularly good deal. They are available before 3 pm. My particular favorite is General Tso's Chicken (specifically asked to be mildly spiced) with fried rice. I had made it a point that when my girlfriend first visited Crown Point that she would try the food at this restaurant (as well as at Papa's Deli). I order Uncle Chen's regularly and am pleased with everything, however this time I called and just an abrupt "can I help you?", no greeting of where I was calling so I asked if this was Uncle Chen's, she said yeah. I ordered and was not asked a name nor given a usual number of my order so I called back and asked if I was bothering her but I needed my number she said 41 and hung up.
