I generally dig anything people just bring me to eat without me asking so this seemed like the place to be! Walked in and was offered a table in a wooden shed like room. No thanks. She was very sweet, a little scattered, but took care of us well. She forgot we had not ordered and was avoiding my summons because she thought I wanted my food, LOL. I ain't trying to get one over on Unc, dang.... ;) I dug the stuff that came out first much more than I liked the combo plate. White beans and hush puppies are my freaking jam! C likes the slaw and pickles, so it was a hit right off the bat. The catfish was gross. One bite and done. The clam strips were clam strips, the alligator was pretty good, but some pieces were so small it was mostly breading. I don't remember the shrimp at all. I am not even sure we had any. Wait.... It wasn't shrimp, it was frog legs, and they were gosh damn delicious! Pardon me for messing that up! Was it supposed to have shrimp? Idk, I was pretty high. We visited tonight for dinner. When we arrived the a woman in a New York Yankees ball cap was at the host stand. It was busy so we asked how long the wait would be. She said about 25 minutes just before complaining she wasn't able to clean tables then saying it might be less than 25 minutes. It was less than 25 minutes by an astonishing 2 minutes. While waiting we watched a visual example of mass confusion in 4K High Definition. When we were finally called, the hostess seated us and then said she would bring plates. This didn't happen so we had to ask someone else. By the time we got plates delivered, our beans and hush puppies (their version of salad and breadsticks) were room temperature. Our server was so soft spoken, you'd think he had Charmin 3 ply for vocal cords. Yet he tried hard and made every effort to make sure we were happy. Uncle Bud's Restaurant does not disappoint! The outside facade and interior were as expected. What was unexpected was the quality of not just the food, but the staff as well. I ordered the 2 pc fish and 2 pc fried chicken. The fixin's of 3 crispy fried hush puppies, 2 dill pickle spears, sliced onion, a bowl of creamy cole slaw and a bowl of extremely tender white beans arrived very quickly. Before we even had a chance to sample each fixin', our main entree arrived. My platter arrived with wedge cut crispy french fries, 2 medium size catfish fillets and a large chicken breast and wing with a fluffy biscuit and a wedge of lemon resting on top of everything. The fish had the perfect light crispy batter that paired well with their extremely thick tartar sauce. Delicious. The chicken also had a light batter that hid the perfectly cooked chicken that was still juicy and surprisingly tender. Our waitress, Stephanie was great and was constantly checking to see how we were doing. She offered us a free side of mashed potatoes and mac and cheese (this week only to see how the customers liked them). Both were also very good. Personally, Uncle Buds a childhood gem. Although many locations have closed this Donelson location is still going full steam ahead. Wow .....I have to Yelp this again. Well because it's been a few changes. Adrian you are the BEST SERVER that I seen in a while. Good service is like fishing. Sometimes you catch a good fish and the ones that aren't any good you may throw them back! Food here is always delicious and flavorful. I met the manager today and she is nice as can be. And as crowded as it is, she has time to speak to all her customers. We had a fat catfish platter and a chicken platter. The second we got seated, a few plates of pickles, cabbage slaw etc they called "Fixings" were placed on the table and we were told it's unlimited (concept similar to Olive Garden's bread sticks or Korean banchan) although cool I wasn't interested in eating it. The type of food served here is not my usual cup of tea (Catfish is not Kosher) and likewise my child wasn't interested in it either. We decided to share an entree. The server said she'd have to charge my child and I, a $9.95 fee each for sharing the Fixings (that I didn't want) and The Mgr explained that was the policy of the owners and there was nothing she could do about it. AYCE Catfish! We got both whole catfish and filets. My preference is the whole fish though both were excellent. The whole fish gives you that buttery fat against the bone that is heavenly. Also, having a little less batter in each bite gives you a "cleaner" flavor. You just have to get good and scraping the meat away from the bone. I will be back soon to take on 5-6 whole fish! I live in Washington state and travel a lot. Where I live we don't have fried catfish so on my work trip I got my fix! This place has an awesome throwback style feel on the outside, and is even more homey on the inside. There was a decent crowd (it was all-you-can-eat) day but since I was alone I was seated quickly. About the unlimited sides, French fries tasted like they were reheated from several days ago, the beans were very good, the hush puppies were very bland containing no onion, bits of corn, and very dry. Cute place with average service. I honestly don't know how they got anything higher than two stars. Why bother sending anything back to the kitchen when you will probably just get more of the same. Catfish was tasty, but not served hot. Biggest reason for the low rating is the lack of value. Way overpriced for the product served. E.g.: 3 small filets, 4 or 5 thin and very overcooked fries, and the AYCE "fixins" for $20.50. Iced tea was another $3+. Add tax and the expected 20% tip and the bill is $32+ for one diner. Had I know the fish portions were so scrawny, I would have opted for their AYCE, a much better value. read more

They sit you down and immediately bring out white beans, onions (which I thought was weird), hush puppies, coleslaw and pickles. We had the catfish and I ordered a piece of chicken. The fish could've had a tad bit more seasoning but it was still good. I topped my catfish with onions (not so weird after all lol) , hot sauce and tartar sauce it was good! I wanted a chicken thigh, they told me it would be a few minutes as none were already cooked. I agreed, but they still brought me out a chicken breast instead saying they didn't have any more thighs. For drinks we had the iced tea which was good as well it was HUGE. I forgot the waitress name but she was really nice and Molly (I think the manager) came around and made sure all was ok. After hearing so many people recommend Uncle Buds, my family and I finally decided to try it this past week. Sadly, the experience did not meet our expectations. We were seated quickly, and our drinks and appetizers arrived without much delay. However, the wait for our meals was surprisingly long considering we only ordered 3-piece catfish dinners rather than the unlimited option. When the food finally arrived, our server dropped it off and never checked back in with us for the rest of the meal. We eventually had to look around several times just to get the servers attention when we were ready to leave. The food itself was also disappointing. The catfish portions were very small and fried much too hard. The fries tasted like frozen, store-bought fries, and the hush puppies were so hard they were difficult to eat. While the restaurant has a casual country-style atmosphere, the quality of the food and service simply did not justify all the recommendations we had heard. Unfortunately, this visit was a letdown for my family, and we will not be returning! read more

Lovely experience. I dined with my older father so we arrived before the dinner rush. I remember going here when I was a child years ago. We didn't even know there was an open location nowadays. This type of food is getting harder and harder to find in the Nashville area. Slaw, beans, pickles and hush puppies are served with every meal. Most diners choose between a large portion of catfish or chicken but the menu holds other offerings not found elsewhere, like gator tail. There's a large private parking lot.
