Red beans and rice
Sheena T.

My first time at Spicy Boys was not a typical visit since it was extremely packed on Mardi Gras with very long lines and had already sold out of gumbo and some other items by 6pm. We managed to grab a seat outside at a table, and it took a really long time for the food to arrive. Their system for delivering food - calling out names and walking around aimlessly was not the best and then they mispronounced one of our friends name, then got annoyed with her when she went up to ask about her order and they said the food was now cold. She ended up leaving without eating or getting a refund. I get that it was busy, but you'd think they would have prepared and planned for a big event like Mardi Gras better. Once we got the food, it was thankfully worth the wait. The red beans and rice were delicious, and we also got the potato salad and roast beef po boy and fries were also delicious and excellently seasoned. The restaurant is in an old house with a typical NoLa vibe. I'd like to come back on a different/non-busy time.

1/2 Surf & Turf Po Boy with Potato Salad. The perfect lunch!

Solid Po Boys here! The freshness of the ingredients used here is noticeable immediately. They were hand slicing roast beef when we arrived, so I had to get the half Surf & Turf Po Boy ($14 half, $23 while). The roast beef debris is tender and it's in a nice brown gravy. The shrimp were perfectly fried and flavorful. The half sandwich was definitely large enough for lunch. Their sides are also fresh and tasty. I highly recommend the Potato Salad! The restaurant is super casual; you order at the counter. There is a full bar in the back of the restaurant with lots of seating. Next time, I'm definitely trying the Debris Fries!

I just received my uber eats delivery from spicy boys and must say how disappointed I am. I wanted something Cajun since the Super Bowl is tomorrow in NOLA. Ehhhhh huge let down!! I guess nothing beats actually being in NOLA and indulging in all their phenomenal cuisine. I ordered a bowl of gumbo and an order of debris fries with added cheese. The cheese was 2 slices of American singles thrown on top that I was charged $2.40 for. The beef and gravy on them have absolutely NO flavor. The fries would be perfect by themselves. The gumbo....yuck. The broth tasted burnt with absolutely no flavor. There is no way this was homemade gumbo. Pretty bummed by the money wasted for below average food from a place I've enjoyed before. So much for satisfying my cajun fix.

I enjoyed the shrimp po boy their gumbo needs some flavor.

Spicy boys I am giving 3 stars because I tried their boudin balls and shrimp po boy and Bloody Mary and I enjoyed the fast service but diversity and Cajun food compared to what's in the area and I think their patrons will feel disappointed because this place is cool but it's missing something ... it doesn't have a welcoming presence compared to all of the other places I been in Nashville... seems like the "white spot" in town and ummm if you are gonna serve Nola Cajun food spice and flavor has to match and since Nola is a conglomerate and mesh of cultures I don't think the name matches its presence... I won't be back and I think the feelings are mutual, Lol.

Fried catfish and gumbo

Delicious food! The service was excellent. Got the gumbo and fried catfish and it was amazing. Wish there was something like this closer to home!

I don't love leaving negative reviews, especially for local restaurants. But Let me start with this....My hopes were pretty high walking into this place. It is extremely cute and Louisiana themed. Loved the selection of beers and drinks at the bar. The gumbo was DELICIOUS. However I was extremely disappointed in the crawfish. I've been trying all the crawfish places in Nashville and this was the WORST. The crawfish were hard and the meat was falling apart. They were extremely unseasoned, where you didn't have any flavors in the head. It tasted like peppered water that they were boiled in. Now due to the satisfaction of the gumbo and how cute the place was, I want to give the crawdads another try, but god I'm hoping for ANY seasoning next time.

A great spot to stop in and grab a quick bite. Great seasoning, great taste, and an overall great bang for only a few bucks. Service is always good and the bar in the back is a great atmosphere to just hang out and be with friends. Always make sure to get a side of cajun fries!

For Capturing the New Orleans feel they get 5 stars!! Extremely authentic and tasteful decor throughout including a tree littered with Mardi Gras beads; something only someone that has been to Mardi Gras can appreciate. We had lunch across the street, but being from Louisiana I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to stop in for a sample. Very authentic atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating with picnic tables and wrought iron table and chairs. Service was friendly, and fast; as if they were in New Orleans. Obviously, Louisiana native transplants in Nashville. They serve an array of Louisiana dishes and while I was too full to try the full menu; I tried 2 Louisiana staples that surely would tell me a lot about the rest of the menu. Gumbo and a Pimm's cup. The Pimm's cup was very much on point; very impressive to get a Pimm's cup that good even in Nola outside of Napoleon house where the drink was invented. The crawfish was a bit too expensive for this Louisiana boy, but being in Nashville I can let it slide factoring all the costs it takes to transport them up here and all. The gumbo had a good spice and the up front flavor was appropriate (keep in mind that every Louisianan claims gumbo cooking credentials, but it's rare to find exceptional gumbo even in Louisiana) If I am completely honest, and keep in mind I can cook some of that exceptional gumbo mentioned above; the roux was just a tad overcooked and oily. I prefer a thick gumbo with a little more of a creamy consistency that you can only get from cooking down the okra to disintegration before adding the main ingredients, but it had the essential bay leaves and the sausage was crispy and good. I might suggest some Serrano and white pepper to flavor instead of heavy cayenne. Nonetheless, a good rendition of gumbo for the Nashville area and even some parts of Louisiana. All in all, it felt a little like home away from home and the effort was much appreciated by this lover of New Orleans.

The gumbo was hot, flavorful, and full of meat. I couldn't recommend it more! For the price of the shrimp po boy, I feel there should have been more shrimp on there, and the potato salad was a little too heavy on the mayonnaise. The service was so-so. The person at the counter was super nice, but the bartender kept ignoring me every time I tried to order a drink. Took 20 minutes to get a drink! The front of the restaurant is very chill, and the back patio is also very relaxed.

Meat pie, gumbo, and an andouille po-boy
Schyler D.

Creole cooking with a homely feel in homely East-Nashville. What else can you need? Meat pie is flaky and rich. Gumbo is a bit disappointing, as it tastes burt to me, but otherwise is still pretty good. The real gems are the po-boys. The andouille po-boy specifically is top-tier! Great amount of wonderful tasting sausage, and the toppings complement it well. Not to mention the bread is perfectly soft and crunchy.

This little spot was a hit! The food was delicious, and the service was with a smile. It had a New Orleans atmosphere complete with Mardi Gras beads and blues. The menu included red beans and rice, boudin, and po' boys in generous portions! Definitely recommend if you don't need fancy just good food.

Didn't feel like I was right in the heart of bustling East Nashville - felt like a little retreat. The service was great and so patient with us as we were quite indecisive. Especially since it was a new menu and there were no pics online (then I totally forgot to take pics to help future yelpers not fall to my fate, alas!). I landed on the French Toast Bread Pudding. It was quite heavenly, but I do wish it was a bit bigger for the price... My friends both got the Avocado Toast and a few of us ordered sides of chicken sausage (and yeah, that was good and they were also a good size, plus 3 links were included in each order). We finished quite quickly but were in a deep convo about who knows what, but never felt rushed to leave (probs as it was kind of between service times, but still, appreciated). Def need to go back for Dinner and another little retreat!

Great value if you are coming with a group and can't decide what to get. I was not able to take pictures of everything as the dishes just kept coming and I lost track of everything that was brought out, but in general, the dishes were veggie-forward but not exclusively (we had some fried chicken that was very good). The menu is seasonal, so made differ when you visit, but my favorites were the squash and brussels sprouts. They were very accommodating of a gluten intolerance at our table and the staff thoroughly explained the components of every dish and reiterated throughout the dinner what was gluten-free and what wasn't. They provided substitutions when necessary. We additionally ordered the famous whipped feta. I am not even a cheese fan, but thought it was incredible. Super creamy and flavorful, it went perfectly with the pita. Definitely order this no matter what!

We were able to make a reservation a couple days before for a Saturday dinner. Staff was attentive and gave good suggestions. Everything was nicely plated and I think overall the dishes were good, but I didn't personally think I needed to have anything again per say. What we ordered: + smoked bone marrow - pickled red onion & parsley salad, smoked salt, grilled FM sourdough - generous to make sure we had 4 pieces, one for each of us, bread was toasted to near burnt, and I wish there was more herbs/onions to eat with + queso fondito - PRB chorizo, pumpkin seeds, cilantro, warm tortillas, escabeche - nice cheese blend, but I think it was missing some more oomph, I think I prefer the crunchy chip than tortilla + SM grilled 12oz bone-in pork chop - TN smoked cheddar mac and cheese, braised greens, TN chow chow - Not our favorite entree but I liked the cheddar mac + beef short rib stroganoff - Nicoletto's rigatoni, roasted onion, mushroom & garlic, sour cream - my favorite dish of the night! A unique way to present a classic dish and I thought it was delicious. + Empanadas - crispy exterior and good filling, the chimichurri was more oil-tasting than additional flavor + Gem salad with fried tomatoes - I like the fried tomatoes! I think a romaine would be better than the gem lettuce as it was a little soft. We were stuffed afterwards so this amount was plenty for 4 people. Price was also reasonable!

The swordfish was tender and moist and really cooked to perfection and had a nice crust on it and wasn't tough like swordfish can be. The pork chop cooked medium. It was very moist and delicious. The greens were fabulous. Mac & cheese was good. With the swordfish, I got cheesy grits, which were amazing. I wanted green beans instead of the grits, but they would not substitute. So I ordered the green beans as a side. Had to pay full price for the side, which in my opinion, you should be able to substitute sides so that didn't make me happy. However, the green beans with the pecans and the bacon, and whatever that sauce was, was worth the extra money. Our waiter was kind of weird and made us feel uncomfortable. Even though we had a reservation for TWO WEEKS ahead of time, our table was small and in the way of traffic. Many other empty tables around us that were never filled. I don't know why we had to sit right inside the front door in the middle of the aisle where everybody was walking by and accidentally hitting us as they walked by. I liked the ambience, but it was a small place, the waiter never smiled. He did an adequate job, but I wouldn't say he was great. The food was very good but not great. Bottom line... I wouldn't go out of my way to do here again.

The cooks were throwing down in that kitchen! Over a couple of days I tried a few things. SZECHUAN SALAD I got the Szechuan Salad with both kale and spinach. I added tempeh bacon and extra dressing on the side. (It didn't need the extra dressing though.) This salad is SO good! I had to force myself to put the fork down and not overeat. It's a large portion so you can share or save half for another day. (When doing this I recommend getting the dressings on the side to prevent soggy greens.) All of the ingredients tasted super fresh, and that Szechuan tofu was thoroughly marinated. Deliciousness! The tempeh (and at home avocado) that I added wasn't necessary but it sure was tasty. This salad is gluten free. SZECHUAN BRUSSELS I love me some roasted brussels sprouts so it was a must to try theirs. I added jalapeños and Hot Tempeh. I have no idea what Hot Tempeh is but I wanted to try it. Best decision ever. The dish itself is amazing. 10/10! The sprouts are saturated in the Szechuan sauce and spices, so every tender bite bursts with tantalizing flavors in your mouth. The Hot Tempeh is tempeh with a coating. It's quite delicious and it elevated an already soaring experience for me. The Szechuan Brussels dish is gluten free, but the Hot Tempeh is not (because of the breading). DUBAI CHOCOLATE CAKE Because I had to. It was NOT gluten free, but I risked it (I have a gluten sensitivity). They did have a gluten free chocolate cake and a gluten free brownie à la mode dish, but I needed that Dubai Chocolate. It was delicious. BLUEBERRY PANCAKES I ordered a single pancake, gluten free for $1 extra. So fluffy and buttery. You'd never guess it was gluten free or vegan. ROASTED POTATOES Excellent preparation and seasonings. MOCK TUNA MELT Gluten free when ordered as a bowl. It was served on a bed of spinach instead of bread. I omitted the cheese and tomatoes. It was very good and the chipotle sauce had a great kick. I pivoted to the Boozy Blackberry Mint Limeade for a second dreamy beverage treat. The server sensed that one wasn't hitting the same (the limeade was SOOOO strong), so she swapped it out for me--back to another Boozy Strawberry Lavender Lemonade! Without me asking.
