My barista wasnt helpful at all. I mentioned it was my first time and just got a blank stare. So I tried the seasonal iced s'mores latte, with oat milk and I added CBD. Total was $13.68, including like a $1 tip. Ridiculous but what coffee place isn't now a days. They brought it out to me, and my first thought was how gross, they touched all over the marshmallow, since it's not attached to anything. Laughable really. Of course I threw it away. Such a waste. Uncle Bean's Coffee is what I'd describe as an off the beaten path hidden gem located on the eastern outskirts of the Heights. This is a quieter side of the Heights away from the main thoroughfares. What I recommend:: Browse/Shop the book selection at Kaboom Books nearby and then head to Uncle Beans, which is located one block over. For coffee, I went with the iced horchata latte, which was really tasty! I love the flavors or the rice milk and the spices and it wasn't too sweet. I also got a spinach, mushroom, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich which comes on an English muffin and is nice and warm with the cheese melted. It was satisfying and hit the spot! This is a little coffee shop in the heights area. They have some outside seating. There is a drive through that's a bit bumpy. There is a walk up window to place orders as well. There was outside seating. This is a quiet area to have a coffee on a Houston winter or spring day. I gave 4 stars because my coffee was not filled to the top. Maybe we should have listened to all of the other reviews about how terrible the service was... The coffee was fine, and they served everything pretty quick. However, all of our food was served cold because they had no toaster, something that we were not warned about before ordering. Aside from not having half of the things in their breakfast menu, barista confirmed the items available with their team but never let us know what was being put on our tab. Half of us got the Lox and Bagel, which were missing capers and onions and dill, which I guess makes it quite literally bagel with salmon. This meant that ended up paying an exorbitant amount of money for bad, cold food. Maybe Uncle Beans is a place where you just go for coffee and have as little interaction with the staff as possible, and avoid the food at all costs. read more

Even though they upcharge, I appreciated the variety of plant-based milk and the use of local honey. Sidenote: I'd recommend all coffee bars consider ditching the upcharge for alternative/plant-based options. Uncle Beans also offers noncoffee essentials such as teas, smoothies, pastries, and light breakfast options. I loved their "Kiddos" menu, which has been a rare sight in my coffee shop experience but a concept I support. While the menu is standard, Uncle Beans sets itself apart with its unique additives (collagen, MCT oil, Tumeric), which greatly benefit skin, body, and overall wellness. They also offer CBD as an additive which is growing in popularity in coffee culture and the Houston community. The CBD additive is about $4.00. I added it to a vanilla and lavender latte with oat milk. I forgot to tell the barista my size preference, but they gave me a small. The total came to $11.91, which is a bit pricy for a small with one additive. Nonetheless, I encourage folks who visit Uncle Beans to try the additive for the experience and exposure to holistic pathways for wellness. The vanilla and lavender latte was a typical latte. Nothing too special stood out in the flavor, and I did appreciate the CBD blended well, so there wasn't an odd taste or any unpleasant aftertaste. Seating + Amenities Uncle Bean's seating is on an outdoor patio that is well decorated and equipped with fans and top/side covering for hot Houston days or those odd winters where it's cold in the city. It's a place you can sit outside and have a coffee any time of year. Uncle Beans offers Free Wifi for customers; however, I wouldn't consider it "remote work-friendly" if you're a person who gets distracted easily by surrounding noise. The patio sits along Houston Ave, which has moderate, consistent traffic flow, so you'll hear some of the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. If the noise doesn't bother you and you're an admirer of victorian style homes, the views of the surrounding neighborhood would be an excellent window for you to work in front. Uncle Beans doesn't offer a public bathroom, which may affect your ability to work remotely for an extended period. An aesthetic highlight is the container mural nestled alongside the drive-thru. It's a dope recreation of the iconic Beatles Abby Road photo, but instead of the Beatles, it's a group of dogs. For sure Instagram-worthy. Uncle Beans also offers a community board, which I appreciate of any business. Sidenote: All coffee shops should have community boards. It shows that community folks are coming into local businesses and using them as hubs to spread awareness, connect with people, provide opportunities, etc. Parking Uncle Beans is clever in having a drive-thru attached. I haven't seen many local coffee shops with multiple "on the go" concepts outside of a walk-up window; however, Uncle Beans manages an efficient drive-thru while cultivating a space where patrons can sit and enjoy the feels of indulging at a locally owned shop. Also, a great way to stay in business in the event of another shutdown. The trade-off for the drive-thru seems to be the limited parking available on site. Spaces are quite limited, and for those that do exist, they don't appear defined as actual parking, rather than "customer made," which can be confusing. There is a good amount of parking directly across the street along Houston Ave (moderately busy), which makes for a quick hop over and the opportunity to keep an eye on your vehicle while you sit. Parking along Alma street is also a choice; however, the road is tiny and requires you to park almost in the yards of the homes on the street. There is a bike rack available for my bikers. The staff was friendly; however, the first time I came, I waited quite some time, even with an empty line. I'm not sure if the staff didn't see me through the glass divider or if the shop were short-staffed, but it took some time to be acknowledged to place an order. Nice little coffee shop in the Woodland Heights neighborhood that seems to emphasize to-go service rather than sit-down. While there is an outdoor patio with tables and chairs, there is no indoor seating, and all orders are taken from either a walk-up window or drive-thru window. Parking is a bit of an issue as there are only two parking spots, with one of them being a handicap space, so you'll most likely need to find street parking if not going through the drive-thru. Space issues aside, for such a small shop, they have a menu with a wide variety of options that includes your standard coffee options, several kinds of tea, kombucha, smoothies, and seasonal coffee concoctions in addition to a small selection of pastries, tacos, and other small bites. I had the iced horchata latte, which was absolutely delicious and which I highly recommend. Unfortunately, they were out of tacos when I was there so I did not end up sampling any food. The only reason I give this 4 stars rather than 5 is because of the lack of indoor seating and ordering windows. I went on a rainy day and had to knock on the "employees only" door to order because the walk-up window, while having a fabric tarp over it, would still have gotten me soaked had I ordered from there. It would be good if they could relocate the walk-up window to underneath the covered patio or put a more substantial covering over the area where the current window is so that one can order regardless of the elements at the time. Additionally, due to the lack of indoor seating and associated outlets, this is a spot definitely more for reading and socializing than working. That, however, doesn't stop it from being a good place to pick up some coffee on the go or to hang out with friends. read more

#disappointed I have never met people so disappointed with their job. Not only were they out of almost everything, but no one in the shop could figure out what menu items they did and didn't have. On that note.... who PREMAKES tacos? It's a disservice to the concept of a taco. They also didn't have a functioning toaster. I will say they got us our poorly made food and coffee quickly?? so that's good, I guess. When it did come out tho it was all thrown in a bag and placed near us. Not given to us. just placed near us. The sitting area would have been decent but I was so focused on finding the nearest trash can throw out the food that I didn't notice it until later. The coffee was actually decent, though. Finally made it to Uncle Beans Coffee after having an Instagram post of their fruity pebble latte saved for about half a year. Wish I'd gone sooner!! This gem of a coffee shop is tucked away in the Woodland Heights neighborhood and feels like a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Houston. The shop itself doesn't have any indoor eating, but we got lucky with some beautiful weather that made sitting on the (parking lot) patio very pleasant. Just the right amount of traffic for a Saturday late morning, which was definitely a +1 for the vibe. The other customers there around the same time were extremely friendly and it gave the coffee shop a very neighborly feel. Sadly for me, the fruity pebble latte was no longer in season (the owner tells me that they usually have that one around pride month), but I still found an appropriately themed specialty drink - The Almond King Cake Latte made with oat milk. Love this walk up/drive thru coffee stand! Patio furniture are adorable and all different with a retro wall design. They have plenty of fans going but not enough to beat the Houston heat. We stopped by one of our favorite used book stores and found covid had changed the days they were open, today they were closed and somebody opened up a very nice coffee shop a few doors down. They have a drive thru and a walk up window. They also have covered outside seating which we enjoyed for a short time. The frappe/blended frozen coffee drink they made my wife was very tasty, could've been a tad thicker. Our buddy hesitantly asked for an iced Americano.....the last few places she got this sucked....today's was a winner....it got her seal of approval. I almost always judge a new coffee place by their hot cappucino, excellent drink. We will be back for more great coffee done well. Great friendly baristas.
