So on valentine's day we had a reservation and we got all dressed up, battled 2 hours of traffic and got there. While we were in traffic we call to say we are on our way and may be 5 minutes late. The hostess said it was no problem, not to worry. So we get there after that horrid traffic and the same hostess says that they were not honoring our reservation. so II went on my phone and showed her the reservation. This might be a record for fastest review I have ever done immediately after service. But it is for good reason and well worth it. If I were judging the place by how but and popular it was on a regular mid Saturday afternoon, Un Amor wouldn't need it. They seem popular enough! My motivation to do a rare immediate review is the quality of food and more importantly, service. I had the beef cheeks empanada and beef quesabirria and both were 10/10. The empanada was a healthy size empanada, flaky and freshly made and the beef cheeks filling was so delicious, well seasoned, amply filled so you know they were not skimping like you see in other places. The birria was tremendous. Perfectly assembled and so well complimented by 2 different sauces, one for dipping obviously, the other for added flavor on top as needed. The birria was so delicious I completely ignored the onion and cilantro on the side which I almost never do. I have had more bland birria dipping sauces than is possible to count, this was the opposite. You can tell thought and love is put into the dishes at Un Amor. And speaking of love, as a.axong as the food is here, the service was exceptional. At least for me it was. And chief reason for that the wonderful lady who served my, Carla (I hope i got that spelled correctly). I told Carla as I was paying my bill that she was the smile and ray of sunshine I needed in my life today LOL. Carla greets EVERYBODY with the warmest most genuine smile and radiant energy you will find in any establishment in Chicago! Throughout my time eating, Carla (I believe she said her family owns or at least runs the place, I think, was checking in on everyone customer at the bar, totally engaging and connecting with everyone in a way that leaves you no doubt she loves what she does and genuinely cares about her customers and people in general. She constantly checked in on me to make sure I had everything I needed. I was genuinely and truly blown away by the service here every minute I spent at thus restaurant. Carla was also kind enough to introduce some of the other staff...Emily was fantastic as well, and Nico who made me one of the best cortadas I have had outside of Hialeah, Miami FL, which is a big big compliment coming from this coffee/espresso snob! First time here for my SIL's birthday and the staff was amazing. There were able to accompany our large group and were very on top of it when it came to asking our experience, answering questions on recommendations, and knowing the needs of a customer without asking. They provided ample bottles of waters and were able to ensure those that had bottomless mimosas to not see the bottom and our waitress gave me a great rec in trying my espresso martini with tequila. We knew about this location as my husband and I would enjoy going to Crio, so it was a nice welcome seeing the restaurant staff we would interact with over there at this location. If I could give 6 stars, I would. Yep, it was that good. I had a craving for skirt steak, so I searched on Yelp. Un Amor eventually came up. It was unusual because it had an average of 4.8 stars and all red, you know what I mean. So it stood out. I thought to myself, I gotta try this place. From the outside, it looks like a regular retail storefront. But inside, it looks modern and tastefully decorated with Mexican themes. I was seated quickly at a booth seat, and my order was taken efficiently as well. The food came out within a few minutes. The Horchata Latte was exactly what I was looking for - a hint of spice with a sprinkle of cocoa powder and a dash of horchata. Then the Skirt Steak Sandwich came out. It looked colorful and tasty. Oohhh, that first bite - I will remember it for the rest of my life. All the flavors just melted together, like if the Democrats and Republicans put aside all their differences and danced the night away. That's how it felt and tasted. I mean, how can you go wrong with well cooked and seasoned grilled skirt steak, sliced hard boiled egg, roasted pablono peppers, duck fat onions, and fresh chimichurri. Unfortunately, the service we received from our waitress was disappointing. When she asked if we had been there before and we told her it was our first time, she did not offer any recommendations or explain anything about the menu. She did not attempt to suggest dishes or drinks, which would have been helpful for first-time guests. Throughout our visit, she rarely checked on our table, did not ask if we needed refills, and did not appear very welcoming. She also did not smile or engage with us much. In contrast, the busboy and another staff member were much more courteous and attentive. I'm sharing this feedback because good service makes a big difference in the dining experience. If the staff were trained to be more attentive and proactive--such as recommending menu items, checking on guests, and creating a welcoming atmosphere--it could greatly improve the customer experience and help your business grow. My new favorite brunch place! Un amor is such a great new spot in the West Town neighborhood. The menu is fantastic and it was so difficult to choose since there were so many great options. With my server's recommendation, I tried the Carne Asada Bowl and it was delicious! The steak was perfectly seasoned and all the flavors went together perfectly. I also tried a papaya empanada on the side. The papaya flavor was very different since I'm used to savory empanadas (which they have plenty of btw) but I still found it very good and the pastry was exactly as it should be. My friend tried the French toast flight and she loved it! I also got an ube latte which I loved. The server was friendly and I believe it was the owner or manager kept checking on us making sure everything was to our liking. I eat here so often that I'm embarrassed by how long it's taken me to leave a review. A really wonderful family-run restaurant--it can be a wait, but everything always seems to be perfectly seasoned. I checked out the menu and was torn between the skirt steak sandwich and the burger. Went with the steak sandwich. It was a good move.
