I'm a huge fan of Eden so I really wanted to like this place, but the food was such a disappointment. The basic spicy tuna roll had almost no tuna, just cucumber and rice. I've never seen anything like it. The $26 toro handroll was even worse: it was just a slice of regular tuna in a handroll. It was not toro - no fattiness, no buttery melt-in-your-mouth quality, nothing. It was a very lean cut of tuna, and it felt like they were trying to pass it off as toro, which is completely unacceptable. On the positive side, our server was absolutely wonderful, and I truly appreciated her and the rest of the staff. They were so accommodating, and the bartender nails the lychee martini every time. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the kitchen. We paid higher prices here than at some of the best sushi spots in LA, yet the food was some of the worst sushi I've ever had. Umi has only been open for about a month. The original eden burger is now completely at the 3rd floor and Umi by eden takes up the entire first floor. The seating is a mix of tables and lounge style. They also have bar style seating in the middle. Amy was our server/bartender and she was amazing and very sweet. We had spicy tuna hand rolls, popcorn shrimp, and a lemon roll. I've been using Yelp for a long time and this is the first time I've felt compelled to leave a review. This was among the worst service I've experienced, and arguably the least acceptable relative to the pricing of the restaurant. Went on a Saturday night at 8pm, rooftop seating. The place was only about half full yet very difficult to get any service. Got our seats pretty quickly but no server came by for about 15 min and could not flag anyone down. Ended up walking to the bar to ask the bartender for help, and to ask for water and a menu while we wait. Waitress finally came by to take our order, ordered two martinis and some sushi. One of the dishes was wrong, and they were nice enough to comp the incorrect dish while they brought the correct dish. Ordered truffle fries in the meantime. The fries arrived after about 20 min. Martinis still had not arrived so asked about the status. They then brought one of the martinis right away, albeit by that point it had been about 45 minutes since placing the order. The second one never arrived. Then we could not flag the waitress down for the check, ended up walking back to the counter to request the check. The waitress was argumentative when we brought up the fact that the second martini never arrived. Perhaps they were having a bad day, but I don't think they were overwhelmed since there weren't that many other tables. Earlier, the couple at the table next to us had left soon after we had arrived, and had appeared quite upset as they were waiting for their check. I assume they may have had a similarly bad experience. The food itself was fine. The toro though was a fairly mediocre cut. Yellow tail was decent. The truffle fries only had a few fries at the top with truffle oil, the rest was just regular fries. I would strongly recommend against this place. read more

Now, while I enjoy a good meal based on quality control as much as the next person, what is lacking here is distinction. That's what makes UMI by Eden so special. UMI by Eden is the latest addition to Eden on Brand, the three-story restaurant by Erik Khojoyan. The Yellowtail Jalapeño with cucumber, avocado, gobo, serrano, and cilantro yuzu ponzu is quite comforting, and my husband - who also happens to be Korean like the Chef - felt it was the texture of kimbap. Lastly, if you want a real treat, order the Toro with kizame wasabi and Eden soy. It might be the best bite of your night. The pieces with the kizame wasabi gently folded inside each layer are just perfection. Now, What are you Drinking? The drink menu at UMI by Eden is extensive, offering Signature Cocktails, Sake, Pours of Japanese Whiskey, Wine, and Japanese-imported Beer. Signature Cocktails include the Matcha Sour, a Maracuya Cocktail with gin and Peruvian passion fruit, and a Spicy Pineapple Margarita. Dining in Los Angeles often comes at the price of dealing with poor hospitality, but here I experienced some of the best, and the food was even better. We went by the suggestions of our enthusiastic waitress, and they did not disappoint! The food was so good I forgot to take pictures until the end, which I am sure my friends appreciated since I like getting every angle of the dishes when I do. Will post more info for pt. 2 Pt I of my review of the dishes I *need* you to know the journey my taste buds were taken on: CEVICHE MISO CONES (5/5): The ceviche is composed of 4 different types of fish marinated in a tangy yuzu ponzu and scooped like ice cream into these adorable salty, sweet miso sesame cones. The attention to detail and creativity goes down to the mountain of puffed rice the cones are wedged into (they don't taste like much outside of crisp, crunchy air, if that makes sense). UNI TOAST (5/5): Listen, the texture and taste of uni has NEVER sat well with me, but THIS was the surprise of a lifetime (literally and figuratively, the manager sent it as a gift). The brioche toast was crumbly, lightly sweet and oily; the sauces gave a salty, sweet, savory layer; and the Santa Barbra uni was the freshest, mouth melting texture I didn't know could come from uni (maybe I have only ever had bad uni before this, but WOW this has opened my horizons to try uni in the future elsewhere and more confidently) BAKED SALMON HANDROLL (4.5/5): The warm handroll is delivered on sesame speckled soy paper, generously stuffed with rice; buttery hass avocado; perfectly baked rich, fatty King Salmon; and an airy, slightly dulcet kewpie mayo snow crab mix. The only thing I would change is opting for nori paper in the future. NOTE: My friends LOVED the soy paper, but I feel like the salty crunch of nori would better compliment the sweet notes of the handroll. HALIBUT SASHIMI (6/5): My favorite dish of all! The halibut was lightly oceanic, lean, but firm, rolled into upright cyclinders; topped with cilantro flowers and a piquant yuzu pickled thai chili. They were placed in a pool of citrusy heaven (but they call it leche de tigre) with cilantro oil piped parallel to the halibut. If you try anything, try THIS RED SNAPPER SASHIMI (5.1/5): Uni toast was my conversion, this was my best friend's. The japanese red snapper was nutty and delicate in flavor with a firm, but tender texture. As was instructed, I rolled the madai in a bit of everything: Think thick tangy creme fraiche; an almost floral, candied, zesty note from kumquat; hanaho; and a cloud of umami soy-yuzu foam. I may be missing some ingredients, but glad to say I didnt miss out on this unique dish with flavors I never thought would compliment one another. It was sensational and my second favorite dish I tried. The things that happen when you ask! One of my friends is vegetarian and the executive chef was kind enough to help create vegetarian versions of their dishes with his team since we were the only guests there (NOTE: They let us know they normally can't on busy days, but as fate would have it, we lucked out). She was exstatic to be offered more than their vegan lemon roll, and man did they pull out the stops. It wasn't just settling for a cucumber roll... No they went ALL OUT for her. We wait. We wait. A few minutes later a woman comes down and asks if we have a reservation, we say no and ask if it's OK to sit at the bar that has no one seated at it. She pulls up her computer, studies it like she's about to get a slew of reservations, and says that's fine and then proceeds to ask us a bunch of questions, our name, our phone number and explains she is doing that in case we leave something. Ok, but this is taking awhile to just sit and we've got a movie. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Finally she walks us over to the empty bar. The bar stools are these very beautiful but supremely awkward configurations that are impossible to scoot up or move straight once you sit down and have receded foot rests so you are basically hanging your legs off. At UMI, water came, then part of the appetizers, then one of the cocktails, then rest of the appetizers, then utensils (chopsticks). Then the beer, 3 minutes after the appetizers sashimi orders came, 5 minutes later pickled wasabi came (they ran out of fresh). Then sake had to be canceled as we were almost done with food. Toro was the worst 3 piece toro i have ever seen, yellowtail and albacore was the driest i have ever seen. I came with friends and wasn't sure what to expect in terms of Sushi. The space was beautiful and luxurious, and the service wonderful. The food was delicious and presented as works of art. The fish melted in your mouth and was not overpowered by sauces and other flavorings. Because it was a weekday, we had the opportunity to be seated on the rooftop area and order from the Umi menu. The cocktails were amazing. I started with the Lychee Martini. It was not overly sweet and had a nice balance of tartness. After dinner, the Sencha Sour Martini was recommended by Abi and it was my favorite cocktail. It included matcha green tea, Suntori whiskey and foam on top. My favorites included the Ceviche with miso cone, Wagu Tarte, Halibut Sashimi and Kappachi. With our after dinner drinks, we tried their signature black label burger sliders with truffle fries from their other menu. On Valentines night .They put 2 waiters for so many people.We waited at least on hour and didn't get our food, even though we had reservations.These guys ruined our Valentines.I will never come back there.Very weak on events.We had to cancel our order and come out ... They threw us out basically just because we refused to give them our name and phone number before we were seated . The girl at the front asked for it as soon as we walked in and just checked the menu and wanted the peak inside and look at the place specially upstairs cause I saw there were changes made since I had been there years ago. Then she asked again as soon as we got upstairs and looked for a few seconds , then we said we are still deciding and came outside for a few minutes. After we decided and came back in to sit downstairs , the guy at the asked us to sit in the front lounge area until they could show us a table , even though the place was almost empty downstairs. Then the girl came and asked for our name and number again and after we said we would rather not she said : I'm not going to call you in the middle of the night ?!!! .
