My gf and I came here for Veecon 1 and it was a crazy couple of days. On day two of the conference we were in a dire need of actual food and Umbra was just a few minutes away from the US stadium where the conference took place. The restaurant is located inside of Hilton hotel. It has a huge lounge area which is perfect for socializing and networking or simply working, but there are also plenty of regular tables just to eat. We didn't have a reservation, but were accommodated right away, which I appreciate. We didn't want anything heavy and opted for soup and salad for my girlfriend and soup and Lamb Lollipops for myself. A note here, I initially hesitated ordering the lamb because the one photo of Lamb Lollipops I found on yelp was quite unappealing and unappetizing. But after talking to our waitress (can't remember her name, sorry), I decided to give the lamb a go. And boy, did it blow my mind! This was one of the best lamb dishes I've ever had! And I'm telling you this as someone who knows how to cook well and is picky as hell when eating out lol the lamb was juicy, flavorful, was caramelized a-plenty, so the lollipop part made total sense, and came with an amazing sauce. Altogether it was fireworks! I was eating my lamb like a savage - with my hands and not leaving anything behind lol think Fred Flintstone lol Anyway, I highly recommend that you order your lamb lollipops medium. Since it's a little sweet, rare or med rare won't be as good in my opinion. Tomato cream soup was great. It was sweet and I don't know if it's because of kind of tomatoes they used or added sugar. I certainly hope it's not the latter. But it was good nonetheless and went amazing with the lamb and with the house salad in my girlfriend's case. Service was a bit slow but to be fair, the place was packed so it was understandable. My waitress was great thou. All in all, it was a great meal! If I'm ever in Minneapolis again, I'll come here again. read more

Outstanding! I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. Parking was a breeze as there were ample street places. We brought my three year old here to celebrate her return to school in a relaxed environment. The staff took wonderful care of us from our server (was her name Sonja?) to the bartender that made me a special mocktail and the chef even came out to ask my daughter how she liked her flatbread (aka pizza :) ) My mom and I ordered the sea bass and scallops. Both were cooked perfectly and the accompaniments were divine. It was such a pleasant surprise that dinners are served with a starter salad or soup and bread, included in the price. We also had the fried bread pudding which was a perfect ending to a wonderful evening. The ambience is modern yet cozy and we can't wait to come back to try more of the delicious dinner options like cauliflower pizza and the burger. This review is not based upon food, i have yet to try their food, but will my next time and will update my review then. This review is based upon the hotel service and bar service. My girlfriend, Kendra (KGB) sings at Umbra Mpls and did so the night of my visit. She is the reason for my visit. Service: Everyone was very pleasant.. from the valet, front desk and bartender. No one made me feel uncomfortable, no one was too busy to assist me, nor did anyone make me feel like I didn't belong there.. other than a patron at the bar, but he doesn't count. lolbvvs Parking can be hard there. You can valet for $30 (it was soooo cold that night; -8 that evening) so i was tempted, but I ended up parking underground adjacent to the hotel, which i found out later was connected via tunnel to the hotel. If you park there, you run risk of not being able to leave after midnight. You could also try parking in the Trader Joe's parking, directly behind the hotel or the lot across the street. Drinks: I had house wine for $5. They have happy hour on Saturdays, guys! 9-11 pm. The ambiance and decor are awesome. Can't wait to come back and have dinner. read more

Dont waste your time. I'm currently staying at canopy for a long term stay. umbra is the restaurant in the hotel. I have been here for a week now, have called Umbra 4 different days multiples times and cannot reach anyone on the phone. I have also placed three orders online, waited 20 minuted to then get a text message saying "Your order has been canceled and refunded. We're sorry the restaurant can't make this order right now." I Went downstairs and they weren't even busy. And the on top of that the food I did end up getting one night was overpriced and mediorce. read more

I stayed at the Canopy and had dinner at Umbra because Yelp told me there are no other decent restaurants with a few block radius and Minneapolis winters being what they are, I chose the easy option. Also, Umbra's menu looked good. There were some previous reviews that commented on the service and while I didn't experience slow service, I can sort of see their point. I sat at the bar and ordered a drink with the bartender. A few minutes later, she came by again (without my drink) and I ordered dinner. She said, "Would you like anything to drink with that?" So, yeah, the service could be a little more attention-oriented. I got nervous about her getting my dinner order right but luckily it was accurate. I had a 10 oz sirloin steak for $32 which included a side Caesar salad. The steak was fine though I thought it would be more flavorful given they make a big deal out of locally sourced ingredients. Deserts are priced at $8 to $10 which is on the high side and I didn't have any. I would probably come back when staying at Canopy because it's convenient and good enough. read more

The food at this place was phenomenal! I came here with a large party from work, and while the service was slow, it ended up being worth the wait. We tried several appetizers - the fried pickles were very good. The Swedish meatballs made of lamb meat was good as well, but could have used more flavor. What really knocked me over though was the blackened swordfish steak. It honestly was the best tasting swordfish I had in my life! It was both very creative and extremely complex. Each bite was a different flavor combination that got better as you went along. There were fresh peas, a bed of black lentils, a carrot purée, the swordfish then roe and edible flowers on top. My friends got the lamb sliders and they said it was okay, they also got the lobster Mac and cheese and it was super spicy but decent. Was very disappointed. Umbra used to have the best Caesar salad I've ever had, but when I returned recently, the salad was different. It no longer had the fried pork belly, and the Caesar dressing was different, not nearly as good as before. Also, the portion was smaller, and the chicken breast add on was very dry and overpriced. So I have been to umbra 3 times in 2 weeks and honestly the food was subpar at best. 1st time was decent. We had Sadie as a waitress she was sweet and the mussels were pretty good, but it went down hill from there. 2nd time service was horrendous we sat and the bar and the bartender (not KK) didn't speak to us more than once. We had to order from carol a very nice server while sitting at the bar! We got the charcuterie board (most bizarre board ever.. it had hard boiled eggs on it) and a flatbread. The flatbread was inedible, it wasn't cooked to be fair. Third time, KK very sweet... food disgusting. Scallops tasted like soap and the tuna was 5 days old or so it seemed. The ambience is beautiful. Drinks are decent. Service is hit or miss depending on the person. And the food not great to say the least. read more

We ordered Umbra for dinner and it was amazing. We started with the stuffed mushrooms, these were just ok, I wouldn't order them again, they were just too greasy for me. For the main course I shared the Fig and Cashew salad and the Bruschetta Chicken Sandwich with my sister. The salad was phenomenal and has huge pieces of fig and burrata. The chicken on the sandwich was perfectly cooked and really juicy. The balsamic glaze and the tomatoes just added to the perfection. Fries were delicious and crisp. My husband tried the burger and felt like it was under seasoned, but well cooked and toppings had good flavor. I will definitely order again for the sandwiches and the salad. I would love to try them when I can visit in the restaurant. Prices were good considering the quality of food and our order was ready on time. Disappointing Dining Experience While I was looking forward to an enjoyable evening with friends, my visit unfortunately was the opposite.Upon arrival, the restaurant's ambiance was inviting, and my friends and I anticipated a delightful meal. I ordered the Duck Breast, expecting a perfectly cooked dish. However, I was surprised to receive a serving that was severely undercooked, presenting very raw, red meat.When I brought this to the attention of our waiter, Niki, she offered to return the dish but informed me that the kitchen had closed. Despite understanding the situation, I was disappointed to see that the dish was still added to my bill. This led to a rather unfortunate experience. Niki's lack of professionalism and attentiveness was disheartening. Her attitude appeared dismissive and unaccommodating, making the situation even more frustrating. Umbra is better than hotel food needs to be. Captive audience and all that. It's also on the side of more expensive than it needs to be. BUT like I said, captive audience. I think Downtown East has some nice food gems but not a ton of options. It's like, think of a cuisine group and Downtown East MIGHT have ONE option for that...but no guarantees it's any good. So I think we're pretty fortunate to have Umbra to fill in a sort of upscale-bar food, fine dining void. Flatbreads, salads, burgers have all been really good. The inside is nice, if dark. Outside is a little awkward but it does the trick. Service is always really pleasant and accommodating (totally separate thoughts about how sketchy and sometimes rude the hotel staff can be). And cocktails are pretty good. I think this is a totally pleasant place to have a nice meal or happy hour. read more

Been here twice. First, the service is great. Second, the food it not. The first time was when we had just arrived in Minneapolis. The food was just OK the first time, but I didn't write a review because they had just opened. Went again and the quality is just not in line with the prices. The "bacon" appetizer was so dry, like over cooked pork shops, and the pizzas or flatbread toppings are disappointing. My mom said it tasted like a microwave pizza. The sauce was so sweet like kids spaghetti sauce. And the balsamic one was so thick with cheese. There were a couple good dishes. The fish croquettes are very good and those little peppers are awesome. The steak was great as well, even if there was no clarity as to what a "Manhattan Cut" is. The server said rib eye, but it looked like a filet and tasted like a strip. A quick google search suggests its a trimmed NY strip? Overall, the quality just does not match the price. For instance, Ikura is not Tobiko! Putting salmon roe on those 2 main courses is a bad call and and mislabeling it shows a lack of worldliness at this price point. Came here for a date night with the hubby before we went to a concert at Target Center... I really wanted to like it. It was a little awkward walking into the restaurant and having to guess if I was actually in the restaurant or the hotel lobby of Canopy. When we were finally greeted by the hostess, he was nice enough but was not very warm or welcoming. The only reason this review is getting a 2 star is because the wait staff was awesome. The food was unremarkable, so unremarkable that I didn't even remember what I had until I went back to look at my photos of the night. We had the Arancini, Crispy Pork Belly, Umbra Burger with fries. Note that it took forever for the food to come out, that we were almost late to the concert. Let's start with the fries. How do you mess up fries? We should of taken in the cues around us when the gentlemen at the table right next to us left his fries untouched. The looked great, the presentation was pretty, but it was not seasoned at all, and texture was off and it flat out didn't taste good. My husband didn't even finish them. The hubby's Umbra burger was just like any other burger... nothing remarkable... the white cheddar didn't even have a bite to it... I guess we were expecting a sharp white cheddar. The best part about the burger was the arugula. I was so excited about the Arancini, but again disappointed... it was dry and you can tell that the risotto was not cooked well before it was formed and deep fried. The rice of the risotto was still hard. My Crispy Pork Belly was a huge disappointment... I get it that they were probably trying to give it a nice crisp on the top and the bottom, but then they still went ahead and poured the sauce over it (?). The top and bottom of my Crispy Pork Belly were beyond crispy they were burnt. We ended up sending it back and they didn't charge us for it, but at the same time we didn't have the time to wait for another entrée since it took so long to get our food out to us in the first place. End up having Ceaser Salad. The menu was frustrating. I loved that they list their fancy ingredients but the menu left you guessing as to how the ingredients were being prepared; minimal description. The only thing good about the whole experience was that it was that the restaurant was clean and the décor was pleasing; a modern rustic industrial vibe and again the wait staff was great. Warm, cozy but still contemporary setting. Best part was the musician tonight - Kray Klaas! Talented with a beautiful voice and a nice range of selections. two words - Umbra Burger We decided to make our first meal easy on us and stop at Umbra (we were staying at the Canopy). Our waiter was Ty - he was polite, friendly, and helpful in making good choices. We both ordered the Umbra Burger. It was so damned good, SO damned good, I joked about needing a cigarette after! (and I'm a non smoker) Seriously, it was the perfect balance of flavors and cooked PERFECTLY. I choose the chips - they were housemade, and I'd bet that they made this order especially for me. They were fan-friggin-tastic. My husband was allowed to try one (ONE, uno, eka, ichi), then was closely monitored to ensure that he did not sneak any additional ones. He ordered fries and seemed pleased, but I did not ask to try any (after all, I was just a total bitch about sharing my chips!). They've got a good beer selection, Ty helped me choose one that he thought I'd like. He did a darned good job. They've got a good cocktail selection as well. Umbra, and the surrounding hotel lobby area, is well decorated and comfortable. It's inviting, yet casual. I have absolutely no idea why there were at 3 stars when I cracked open Yelp other than to say that it's new. Only improvement Umbra could make is there's a weird unpleasant smell in the vestibule where you enter off 3rd St S into the restaurant. We've been there 3 times and it's been there each time. I stayed at the Hilton Canopy for business last week and dined at Umbra several times because it was connected to the hotel and I didn't have to deal with the cold, Minneapolis winter weather. Overall the experience and food quality was great for all of meals that I had there (one lunch, one dinner, and three breakfasts). Breakfast: This is in the top 3 for best hotel buffet breakfast that I've had. They had a wide variety of options that changed daily, but it always included: variety of bread, fruit, cold meat/cheese, eggs, potatoes, oatmeal, yogurt parfait, and smoothies. My favorites for the week were poached eggs served on top of a potato hash, cajun sausage, and the acai smoothie. The service for breakfast was excellent, Kat was working every morning that I dined and had my name memorized by the 2nd day. Lunch: I had a late lunch after checking into the hotel (around 2pm) so the restaurant was not too busy. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, at recommendation of the server. The flavor of the sandwich was fantastic but it came with a little too much slaw for my taste. Dinner: A few friends, local to the MSP area, joined me for apps/drinks the first night I was in town. If this had been my only experience with the restaurant I would not return due to the slow service. Our original plan was to do a full dinner at Umbra but it took over two hours just to get two appetizers (the mussels and bruschetta flatbread) and drinks for the table. We live in the neighborhood and have been hesitant about dining here because the menu is a bit pretentious for a Tuesday night drop in dinner. However; I met a friend for wine and ended up sharing a bottle as well as three items from the nibble and bites menu. First of all the Volver Tempranillo Spain is one of the best reasonably priced bottles I have had in a long time. We shared the Walleye Cakes, Bourguignon Sliders, and Artichoke Gratin.All were fabulous! To top it all off we sat on one of the couches and it was the best people watching. I would say that the atmosphere is definitely very cozy, the lighting is perfect, and its very clean. However it's the service I received. When we walked in there was no one to greet us even though there were 3 employees by the bar. I finally greeted them with a hello, and it was only then we received any customer service. I had a reservation and told her my name. She took awhile looking it up in the system and I understood that much. It's the next thing that bothered me though. There were plenty of seats by the windows with attached booths for 2. This employee literally sat my daughter and I under a plant that had plenty of nats flying around. I had to keep scooting over so that the plant wasn't in my face. My daughter was there and it was thanksgiving so I didn't want to complain and ruin her day. Once our food came it was cold. Our dessert pie didn't have enough whip cream on it, so we asked for more she didn't come back. It was only until it was time to pay our bill that she came back. Idk if it's the stigma that black people don't tip or what but our waitress wasnt very attentive, friendly, or polite. I still paid my 20% tip because thats what's expected and fair. It seemed all the other waiters were polite and attentive to their customers. One of them thanking us on our way out, and it wasn't our waitress of course. We went here for a light supper before a performance at the Guthrie theater. The the restaurant has very modern décor and ambiance without being too industrial or stark. The waiter was very friendly and helpful. We had the chop salad with lobster. The lobster pieces were abundant and the salad was excellent; more than enough for two to share.
