Last time I was here wasnt the best experience, but decided to go back for the Halloween pop up. Sat at the bar and the bartender was the best service ive had there. I didnt get any food but got a couple drinks. Drinks were super tasty and were similar to what i was expecting. Walked in with my two kids during a snow storm. The place was pretty empty and there was a group of staff standing around near the kitchen. After a few minutes a hostess came and seated us. A server came by with water and I asked if there was a kids menu. He said he would go get some and that was the last we saw of him. We waited in our booth for 10 minutes before my daughter walked back to the hostess station to ask where the kids menus were. Apparently, nobody could find them? But instead of coming back to tell us that our server had just disappeared. After waiting another 10 minutes with no server in sight we walked out and ate at the Jimmy John's next door. read more

Note: My review is solely based on the 2025 December holiday free pop up bar called "the naughty list." First off, we were under the impression that this was a ticketed event despite it being free as the website makes you get a ticket. When my group arrived and I tried asking the bartender if he needed my ticket he seemed confused as to why? From there the confusion got deeper as I asked if we could order off the holiday pop up menu to which the bartender answered in an off format of yes we were welcome to order off the holiday menu. Contrary, I had to keep nudging to physically see the holiday pop up drink menu. Once we cleared the confusion up, everyone in my party ordered the same drink. I couldn't even tell you what it was called as I can't even find this menu online. It did have a coffee liquor in it and a candy cane. When we asked the bartender if we could keep the tab open while we sat in the couch section we were turned down. Unfortunately, the drinks were really strong and it was once of those moments where you had to finish the drink to make up for the $20 it cost. The holiday pop up has so much potential because the space is decorated perfect but the staff running the event doesn't know it's an event, won't allow for an open tab, and the drinks are mid. We had a very disappointing experience with Umbra. My daughter went to celebrate her 18th birthday with nine friends (ages 16-18). After they were seated, they were told that the restaurant would only allow one tab for the entire table. At that age, this was stressful and unrealistic for a group of teenagers. I called to speak with the manager, hoping for a reasonable solution. At first, she was rude and refused to help, saying it was their policy and that they would not "waver." Only after I expressed my concern did she suddenly change her tone and say she would work with the girls, for which I was thankful. Unfortunately, the situation only got worse. The manager later made the girls very uncomfortable by telling them that I had been rude and yelling at her on the phone, which was not true. I was frustrated, but I did not yell. This made the girls feel insecure and awkward during what was supposed to be a happy birthday celebration. To make matters worse, the bill was not split, and one girl was forced to pay for the entire meal. This experience showed poor leadership, poor communication, and poor management. A restaurant should never make young guests feel uncomfortable, especially during a special occasion. We will not be returning. read more

My friend and I stopped by Umbra for a quick dinner and drinks before a concert at U.S. Bank Stadium. We were promptly seated upon arrival, and our server greeted us quickly with waters, which made for a great first impression. One thing that felt a bit off was the limited cocktail selection--there wasn't a printed menu, and availability was communicated verbally, which made it slightly unclear. That said, our food order was taken quickly and arrived even faster, which we really appreciated given our tight timeline before the concert. The service overall was attentive, polite, and efficient. We went to Umbra for dinner before a show at the Guthrie Theater. We had never been before and didn't really know what to expect. I liked the contemporary feel. Our table near a window had great light with live plants next to us and an open view of the main restaurant. They were offering a special menu focused on vegan food so I had the vegan entree which was cavatelli pasta with garlic scapes and pesto served on a giant slice of beefsteak tomato. It was super delish with lots of garlicky flavor and a little peppery heat. My wife ordered the short rib bolognese. She said it was really good. I am not big on meat dishes, but I tried it and I am sure meat and pasta lovers would love it. My daughter had another of their regular entrees and was quite happy with it. Before our entrees came we tried the arancini. It was flavorful with a tomato tanginess and nice consistency to the cheese. For drinks my wife and daughter had cocktails which they were happy with. I splurged and had the Aperol Spritz. I thought it was a little light on the prosecco and heavy on the club soda. It was ok, not great. The service could have been a little faster, but only because we were short on time. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. You could tell, however, that he's a meat eater like most people. He wasn't too enthusiastic about the chefs special vegan menu. Nevertheless we gave it a try and I thought the vegan entree was excellent. So often restaurants do a token vegetarian dish only to ruin it with heavy, oily sauces or deep fried ingredients. Not this time. I'd definitely order the cavatelli again. I wanted to give the vegan dessert a whirl but we had a show to get to. Maybe next time. If you're looking for a nice meal before or after the Guthrie give Umbra a try. read more

Pretty bartender great and chatty. Good ideas of where to go and seemed to know the locals/regulars. Had breakfast here one day but the breakfast sandwich was just ok. I've been wanting to check out Umbra since seeing their cool pop ups for Halloween and Valentine's Day. This was my first time going, they are doing a Lisa Frank inspired pop up for Pride. Being a millennial Lisa frank was a big deal growing up so I was really excited to see what they had going on. We went on a Thursday around 7pm. Parking is by meter but there are ramps in the area as well. I did make reservations because I wasn't sure if it got busy or not. It was pretty open for seating when we got there and for the pop ups it's in the "bar" only and open seating. When you walk in there's no greeter and host stand it a ways back from the door. But later on I realized that it's basically the hotel lobby and a lot of people kind of pass through the area. On the restaurant side it was more intimate seating and the bar side was more casual and seat yourself. They had couches a few tables and some chairs. I will say our waiter was amazing. He was attentive and overall nice. The menu was pretty limited for the pop up but you can of course order from the regular menu. We ended up getting 1 order of wings, parm fries and a drink each (so 2 drinks). $65 which is reasonable for dt or eating out these days, I guess. The wings were decent, we got buffalo but I think I would have preferred a try rub (for next time). The fries were basic but not crazy high expectations for fries though. We did order drinks for the Pop-up menu. We got the Blue Job and Lady & the Tramp. The drinks were good. I did like the Lady & the Tramp drink a bit more. As far as the pop up, they aren't really promoting it on the socials which is weird but I was a bit disappointed seeing it was just a back drop for decor. One of the cooks from the back even came out complaining about another customer's order very loudly which was very unprofessional. I had the BEST time with my friends at Umbra Pink Parlor's Valentine's Day Pop-Up! The space is a total Valentine's dream-pink florals, cozy velvet seating, and the cutest photo-worthy details.I tried the gnocchi it was perfectly soft and flavorful which paired well with the Caesar salad, which was fresh and crisp. I wanted to add soup because I've heard they have the best but they weee all out so it has to be true ! I couldn't resist sampling all the Valentine's-themed drinks, and they were as delicious as they were pretty. But the real standout? Their dirty martini-hands down the best I've ever had. Love this place! I come here when I am in town and staying at the hotel it is connected to. The staff are amazing, friendly and welcoming and the food is really great! I have tried a few things off the menu but as a creature of habit, I always get the house flatbread, french fries in duck fat or the caesar salad with chicken. That salad is always a hit and delicious. What ever they do to the chicken makes it taste amazing! Mixed with that creamy caesar dressing and crunchy croutons, it makes for a great meal. The flatbread is also always a great treat! I did try the chicken wings, they are amazing as well! slightly spicy and sweet. You will have a great time here, but heads up, they close at 11PM due to location in the hotel. (yes, drunk people get loud. :)) so get there early to enjoy the food and service! read more

Just horrible all around: We stopped at Chloe's for a drink first and got the last 4 seats at the bar and all the tables were full. Had reservations at Umbra and they were at like 10% capacity. This was so bad all around. The calamari app was horrid but the fries and arancini were really good. Very few menu choices and they managed to overcook the heck out of all of our steaks and chops. Now, it was a fairly busy Friday night, so would go back for a second try. However, we went specifically for the specialty Halloween cocktails. I went to visit my friends at the Canopy hotel, they attended a watch event for Love is blind. They were hungry and didn't want to leave the building since it was so cold outside. This restaurant was also set up for the pink parlor pop up event for the month. We walked up to the host station and was seated at the corner round table. Service was great, our server gave us suggestions on their menu. I ordered the soup of the day which is Italian sausage. We also ordered the jumbo wings, crab cake - delicious by the way, and crispy chicken sandwich. The wings tasted kind of sweet, might have been the marinade and then spicy dry rub. The food that we had was very good, but service was extremely slow. We waited over 20 minutes to have a server come to our table and bring water and ask about drinks. We were in the Minneapolis area for a work event and decided to stop by this restaurant for lunch. It was within walking distance and located in the Hilton Canopy's hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and we loved the interior of the building. We were seated right away and our waitress was great! Super accommodating, nice, and attentive. There were 5 of us and she did a wonderful job making sure we had everything we needed! The dining experience felt very modern and chill. We got the following (keep in mind that some items might be rotating): Lobster toast: 9.5/10 - it was fresh, delightful, and the arugula salad on top of it with red sweety drop peppers and jalapeños was the chef's kiss. There were massive, lobster claw meat on the toast and we all shared it between the 5 of us. It was plenty to go around! Definitely add some lemon juice on the toast as it adds that pop of extra flavor and freshness. It came with fries and the fries are probably some of the best fries I've ever eaten. Perfectly crisp, nice coating, and seasoned well! Do yourself a favor and please get the fries!!! I honestly ate like two small baskets of them! Fried Minnesota bluegill: 5/10 - I really really wanted to like this, but it had a fishy aftertaste that threw me off. The batter they fried the fish in, was more on the crumbly side and the batter was falling off the fish when we were eating it. The remoulade sauce was really good though, creamy, hint of spicy, and a little tart. I never had bluegill before and I didn't know what to expect, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I don't like fish that has a fishy aftertaste and even though it was battered and fried, it was still fishy. Again, I don't know if this is how bluegill is supposed to taste but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Wagyu Umbra burger: 8/10 - this burger was massive and me and my coworker spilt it. It was more than enough between the two of us. The burger was cooked perfectly! It was medium rare and super super juicy! As I was eating the burger, I could see all the juices coming down. That is a sign of a really good, high quality burger!!! It came with a thick slab of bacon, cheese, arugula, and bbq sauce with a side of the fries. We both enjoyed this burger very much and would get it again! My other coworker had the blackened shrimp and grits and she loved it and another one had the chicken sandwich. There were no complaints and they finished all of their food. I couldn't rate on those because I didn't taste them, but both dishes looked wonderful and tasty! Overall, it's a solid place for some great food. It is a little on the pricier side so keep that in mind. But the portion sizes were great! I would come back to try more things on the menu. The flatbread, especially the cheese was so good that I decided to order 4 different kinds for the meal and absolutely disregarded my diet. The next day I had to stop by and order one of the flatbread again because I just kept thinking about it at night... The service was fantastic. The bartenders were very friendly and refilled my soft drink multiple times without charging me extra. Service was very bad - after taking our order, the wait staff only came out to deliver the food (no check ins, water refills, or coffee refills). Even had to go up and ask for the check. This was particularly egregious as they only had three tables with parties. Food was also not great. Had the chicken and waffles, described as "hand breaded and tossed in hot honey", only to receive clearly microwaved and dry chicken with the honey on the side. Our other order had a dish with an entire main ingredient missing (cream cheese on a salmon and lox), but since the service never came by we couldn't get it fixed. All of this cost $50 for two people. umbra needs to either provide an experience actually worth that price, or take it down about 50% for what's being offered. read more

Stayed at the Canopy Hilton hotel over a weekend and decided to check out Umbra for a hangover lunch at the bar. After reading the menu from top to bottom then bottom to top, decided that my best life choice was the fried chicken sandwich. Then my second best life choice was to sub out the fries for a classic caesar salad. The fried chicken sandwich was IG worthy, stacked perfectly with arugula, tomatoes, pickles, gruyere and white bbq sauce. white bbq sauce...strange sounding, but strangely good. After a good press from the top, I enjoyed every single bite. The side caesar portion was also huge, not sure if they meant to give me this much, but to me it would have been a full size salad. Good caesar, however nothing to go home to tell mom about. Reason for 4 star rather than 5 is that the bartender was a bit nonchalant with his service. Just seems like after running my food, he would give me some silverware and dinner napkin. However, I had to ask for it and it seem like I was giving him some trouble for asking for it. Anyway, perhaps it's me and as I mentioned I was operating at like 65%. Also, I realized this place is popping during happy hour with live band playing. (beer and NA cocktail) Service was intermittent and inconsistent with the people and timing. Most of the bread was good with exception of the one old stale piece at the bottom of the basket. Our entrees arrived before our appetizer. Appetizer (arancini) came out cold. I accidently found some gum under my table which is always a nice surprise. Food was fine but really felt like we could be at any chain restaurant in an airport or mall. Then there is the band. If a person makes a reservation for dinner at 6pm, they aren't there for the band. If you are small space, don't have a loud band. (and a trumpet without a mute) I would say this was a forgettable experience but it I want to remember to never go back here. read more

Such fabulous staff! The staff really put this place over the top. It's located in the Canopy by Hilton. And it's open all day! (Which feels like a rarity these days.) They have multiple menus. The nibbles and bites menu is available all day. Then they have separate menus for lunch and dinner. There's also lots of cocktail, wine, and beer options. The ambiance and vibe are quite nice. Chill and modern, with just a touch of rustic. It's on the small side. There's bar seating and then a few tables. It can get pretty hopping at night. Seems to appeal to both hotel patrons and locals. The spicy mussels were insane good. Perfectly cooked and such a fabulously delicious sauce/broth. I also had the burger, Caesar salad, and fries. All were delicious. The burger was quite big and juicy. Pro-tip: Get a side of the peppercorn ranch to dip the fries in. And you can get your meal to-go and take it up to your room. All in all, a lovely dining experience! (And I'm still craving more of those mussels.) read more

I thought it was strange there was no cocktail sauce but whatever they r doing is still very good. Put a little Sriracha on it. I extended my stay here in MN, unfortunately this hotel was sold out however I'm staying at a near by hotel and I plan on devouring some more oysters. I don't drink but their cocktail mixes are gooood! I loved the livin' in a pear. Such a good mix but an even better mix is the pink spice without the spice! I tried it with sparkling soda and it just added more to it!!! That was all I was drinking after I got introduced. Waffle is sweet enough. I do wish it was more buttermilk style but still.. if u let the syrup soak in the waffle (if u don't finish it) it's such a great dessert later. Umbra needs to decide if it is an upscale restaurant or a live music venue for Gen Z. Five of us went for dinner on a Friday night a couple weeks ago. The food was good and the service ok, but there was a dueling piano act in the lounge (it's hard to see where the lounge ends and the dining area begins) that was so loud none of us could carry on a conversation with the person next to us or the person across from us, let alone anyone farther away. The music act had their speakers up very loud and one of the singers projected way more than necessary for an amplified performance. If I'd wanted to go to Howl at the Moon, I would have. I politely asked the waitperson if they could turn the performers down just a little bit. She said she would talk to her manager. He eventually showed up, was dressed like he was going to a cheesy version of Tony & Tina's wedding as the cousin who didn't own a coat or tie, and was exceptionally rude and dismissive, basically telling me I didn't know what I was talking about, that the patrons come for this piano act, and that his marketing department had decided to double their bookings. I dine out a lot, and usually at upscale restaurants in Minneapolis (e.g., BLG, Maison Margaux, Spoon & Stable, 112, Aster House, Tavola),and always enjoy and appreciate the food, ambiance and service offered at by those teams. At Umbra, though, I've literally never been so mistreated and dismissed by "management" at a place that bills itself as "A dining experience . . . where every meal is a heartwarming celebration of community and comfort." We have been here quite a few times and previously , the food was mediocre. However, as of recently, the menu changed (and maybe the chef?) and the food is amazing! The halibut with couscous is a favorite. The charcuterie board is huge and delicious. The pasta is very flavorful. They have great drinks including one of our top espresso martinis in the cities. There is dining room seating but also a great lounge area. Some nights have live music which is really fun, usually jazz. read more
