Doesn't look like much when you walk past but once you sit down n take a look at the menu, your hunger will kick in. For me it was quite refreshing as i was about to have sushi after long time. My bento box was so good. The sushi in the box had the softness n freshness. Chicken was tender too. I stole tempura from my friends plate n it was good. I was working in the neighbourhood and the closest food complex had a Save on, Starbucks, Freshi, BP and Timmie's....so slim pickins' for lunch. Before I left, I spotted Umami Sushi so I gave it a try and I was pleasantly surprised! They note on the menu they only use wild Sockey salmon and what a relief. I got the Gomae, miso soup, half order of Toro sashimi, and 1 piece chopped scallop. Let's explain this one by one. Toro sashimi and chopped scallop: Great! No complaints. Miso soup: way too salty Gomae: the spinach was way over cooked or something, I was unable to chew it. Service: Horrible! They didn't even check on me once to ask how everything was tasting. Then, when I went to go pay for my bill I told them about the Gomae, and how I couldn't chew it. I only had about 3 bites. They didn't take any actions to better the situation. Still charged me the full thing of Gomae. Pretty disappointing. The only saving grace for this restaurant was the Toro sashimi and chopped scallop. Just one of those places where I'll try it once but would never come back. read more

Solid 4 stars! Went there for the first time last night and I'm glad we did. It's wonderful to have a great sushi place so close to home. My husband ordered the Phoenix roll and I the dinner box A. We shared both. The Phoenix roll was delish. My only complaint was it fell apart when you tried to pick it up. Maybe it needed to be wrapped a bit tighter??? This roll is not only filling but beautifully put together. The almost crab and the roll is bordered with delicious sauces. Yes it's supposed to be a three pepper hot roll so I did "pussy" out and ask for it to be tamed down. I'm happy I did. I loved the freshness and the combination of flavours. The servers at very friendly and give the vibe that they know you and remember you everytime you come in. Umami is a good sushi place for kids. They have a kids box, that even comes with a little treat. The rolls are generous and are not all rice. I find that ordering a special roll is enough to satisfy the appetite of this adult male. Umami is one of my favourite sushi places in the Surrey/Cloverdale/Langley area. The food is always super delicious and is reasonably priced. My friends and I got a party tray and split the cost between the 6 of us. All of our bills came out to roughly $10 with the tray and a roll on the side. We had a takeout order and this place was packed ! I was craving Miso, Gomae and Beef Short Ribs - 3 of my staple dishes from any sushi place ! Gomae was expensive compared to other places and at first didn't know the reason why but after I saw the portion size , it all made sense . It's huge and the most delicious sauce they put . The sushi here is soooo good! We ordered the spider roll, which has fried soft shell crab. It is very very good, but the only problem is that I think they added too much sauce which ended up making the sushi a little bit too salty, but we tried scraping a little off and it tasted fine after that. We also ordered the umami roll which has BBQ eel, avocado, and scallops. It is a bit more expensive but it is almost two times the quantity of rolls. This one is very very good. So everyone should give this a try. As for the dessert, we ordered the hazelnut ice cream, which is in the shape of a pear coated with a thin layer of ice cream. That tasted pretty good. The service is great, and the take out is reliable. We order almost every week, and they know your name, and your order.
