Age Dashi Tofu (got hungry and had most of it before we could get a photo)
Diane L.

There's plenty of seating, and wasn't too crowded when we went. The portions are generous and the kaisen don was good for the both of us with some appetizers it came with a generous amount of fish and also had pickled radish, ginger, mushrooms, and pickled cucumbers. It's at a decent price point, and the yakitori comes with 2 pieces which was nice. Their agedashi tofu was nice and soft with a gentle dashi broth. The wait staff was kind, and it was a nice place to have lunch

Spacious place. Service was very good. Staff around and available. Sushi was excellent - highly recommend. Spicy edamame and potstickers were delicious. Ramen was good- not great

Mentaiko
Emily N.

Probably one of my favorite sushi spots in Chicago! The fish was super fresh and the service was really kind. The sushi itself was honestly really good - like the spicy tuna roll?? So solid!! It was unique but also really savory and packed with umami. Definitely one of the highlights for me. I also tried the mentaiko udon. It was a bit salty for my personal taste, but I can totally see why it's popular. It's one of those dishes that's definitely worth trying at least once, even though I probably wouldn't order it again myself. Overall though, the quality of the fish really stood out. Fresh sushi, good service, and a great spot if you're craving sushi in Chicago.

Ordering delivery via Grub Hub guarantees on time fresh deliciousness like my faves: age dashi, chef's specialties, gomae, shrimp tempura with curry sauce and rice. Sides of salad and miso soup rounds out a full meal.

South loop mediocrity strikes yet again. I was desperate & I deeply regret it. After spending $60 I was infuriated. One of the rolls was disgusting, the truffle one. No shrimp detected in the shrimp roll. This is exactly why I'd gladly drive an hour to the north side in rush hours. Let me be frank, this is some of the worst sushi I've ever had. Reminiscent of gas station sushi.

So yummy! My friend and I went here on a weekday around 6 pm, no rezzy required, and were able to easily walk in. Service was fast as well. The inside was cozy with ample seating. The sushi was delicious and definitely hit the spot! Would recommend.

Busy place but they keep it moving. Efficient service. Yummy sweet plum wine. Tasty dumplings. Flavorful curry udon. Excellent sushi rolls! Those were the star. Colorful decor, murals, and movie posters. Laid back vibes. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Was craving something warm and soupy and thankfully this was around the corner from our Airbnb. We ordered beef tongue skewers and the curry udon. First set of skewers were good but second set was ungodly salty. Udon was a little too light for my liking but it satisfied my craving for the time being. Servers were quick and friendly. Cute and cozy spot for some Japanese food.

Service very attentive and quick. Food also very good. Everything combined with the friendly staff makes this a 5 star restaurant.

My family loves going to Umai; however, I'm usually busy when they go, so I finally got to go with them. The food was amazing! I'm usually skeptical of going to sushi places, outside of AYCE, but I got their katsu don and it was delicious! It had crispy pork, egg, mushroom, and tons of flavor. We also got individual nigiri pieces, and they were so fresh. My katsu don came with miso soup and a salad as well; both tasted very fresh. The service was very good. They always checked up on us and made sure our drinks were filled. The ambiance was very clean and looked fancy. I love how you can see the chefs prepare the sushi as well!

A great spot if you're looking for nice quality sushi and really fast and attentive service. I got the Chicago roll and the the Umai crunch roll. I slightly preferred the umai crunch roll. The eel sauce really set it off. Next time, I wouldn't get two rolls that both have the crunchy topping.

Amy D.

Cute patio, but definitely at the corner of a bustling (sometimes rowdy) intersection. Our service was good and they never rushed us after we finished our meal, which I appreciate! Overall, Umai's food was average. But I think it's still a good option if you're in the south loop and looking for reliable Japanese food! Hyunjin approves. - AD

My family and I were in the area and saw great reviews about this place and decided to eat here. It was confusing to find at first because there was no sign above their restaurant, but our gps said we were in the right location. Anyways, we were immediately greeted and seated. The restaurant is a decent size, with modern decor. Our waiters were very nice, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. All of us ordered different things to share and everything tasted great, leaving us happy and full. Would definitely return whenever visiting Chicago.

Winter soup and Nabukoyi soup.

The fish was fresh and cut with care, and the rice was seasoned just right. We also split the Sesame Salmon Maki, 10 generous pieces full of avocado and flavor, along with an ice-cold Asahi draft in a frosted mug. The real highlight was our server, Andy. Even with a full house, he was friendly, attentive, and kept everything moving at a perfect pace. Drinks never ran low, and he checked in at just the right moments. The restroom was clean and well kept, which says a lot about how a restaurant is run. Paying is easy too: just scan the QR code at your table. Great food, great vibe, outstanding service. Ask for Andy. Five stars for the whole experience.

I got the eggplant tempura snack off the happy hour menu for $6 and this was SO good. And actually a little too much for one person! Portion was generous and this was delicious. Perfectly crispy, with super soft jammy eggplant, with mildly sweet, savory, herby, and fish saucy(?) flavors. I opted to get a yuzu margarita, not on the happy hour menu, but yuzu margarita. YUM! To round it out, I got the deluxe nigiri set and this was SO fabulous. Really delicious, high quality fish, with inventive garnishes, but while still letting the fish itself shine. There was a specialty scallop nigiri on the menu as well with nori-infused French butter. The sushi chef heard me talking about all the things I was trying to choose between and just upgraded the scallop nigiri that comes with the deluxe set to the specialty one, with no added charge (which was a surprise!). Super lovely folks working behind the bar. If I wasn't an out of towner, I could absolutely see myself becoming a regular here. Interior was vibey but in a relaxed, approachable way. Highly recommend checking this spot out!

It clearly is for all their locations. Unfortunately, here at Chinatown's location, when they attempted to scan the card, the staff said it does not work and only works at the Printer's Row location. I ended up calling the Printer's Row location and had the team talk to the manager at the Chinatown location, and the manager at the Chinatown location kept their stance that it does not work, stating Printer's Row location does not know why the gift card does not work at the Chinatown location, and will not make any exceptions to accepting the gift card. Thankfully at the Printer's Row location, they are stating it's due to their system being new as they are a new location, and reason why the gift card is not working at all the locations yet which they are now working on to fix so it does not happen to any other customer moving forward. I just wish the Chinatown location showed some compassion to address the issue and still accommodate the inconvenience instead of us having to go back to the Printer's Row location to use the gift card Price: Approximately $20, not including tip for 2 people. There are lunch specials! Ambience: Indoor Seating Overall: Worst experience, especially to follow up my birthday celebration

The sushi was better than I expected, and portions were larger than I expected as well! There was no menu provided, not even after the meal, so I'm not really sure what anything was, but each course was relatively "safe" - there were no crazy fish we'd never tried or weird concoctions. Limited drink menu, but my husband enjoyed the sake tasting and I stuck with wine. The chef also provided us some of his favorite liquor to do shots with the team lol. As they said: Never drive to Q Sushi! Only complaints were that we didn't get a menu to reference, and sitting at the bar, I watched them wipe the counter with the same rag over and over without cleaning it off or even shaking the bits of rice out of it. Gave me an ick! I'd like to come back here and try the regular menu as well, since the quality was good! Definitely a good place to go for a date night or with a fun-loving small group.

Rooftop dinner!! Sushi & lychee martini for the win :)…read more So this is my first time at Miru- Definitely make a reservation! This is at the Saint Regis hotel. I would definitely recommend the crispy rice. The Hamachi roll and the spicy tuna roll. The shrimp fried rice was not as tasty as I would hoped, but they have big shrimps in there, which I loved. The shrimp temporary I could've lived without it. It's just fried shrimp very flaky the sauce it comes with is actually really delicious. We kept it for the remainder of the meal. Get the lychee martini it is divine and super smooth, not like a kick in your face! The ambience here is upscale of course you must dress to impress. They have window seating since the weather wasn't permitting for us to sit on the rooftop. Our waiter was really sweet. He was kind of busy so he was forgetful a little bit but super sweet. And we celebrated my birthday there so he got me a little birthday treat for free. I would come here again for the sushi and lychee martini! It's a good call since while you can walk in and get seated in front, the back room is a more nicely decorated, speakeasy-like vibe. We got the chicken karaage to start which was decent but a bit on the salty side, and there is quite some chicken skin so just as an fyi (it's delicious but could be crispy). We then got the seared scallop, spicy bluefin tuna, and hidden dragon rolls. The seared scallop was my favorite as I like the torched flavor. The spicy bluefin tuna was also pretty solid, leveraging the crispy garlic and green onions for additional flavor. The hidden dragon is good especially for those that prefer a cooked sushi since it's eel plus spicy tempura, with more garlic. I am glad the garlic added to the flavor rather than overpowering the flavor. 3 rolls plus appetizer is sufficient for a nice meal for 2. Service is excellent as you are never out of water - the server keeps coming to top off your water throughout the entire meal. My only critique is the pacing. Since the chef already had the fish sliced and prepped, I expected a smoother flow, but the meal took about an hour and a half for 14 pieces of sushi. It felt a bit slow, especially for a lunch service. That said, if you're looking for a reasonably priced omakase with quality fish, this is a solid choice.
