Ok...so here's the skinny on Ultrabar. good location and easy to find. Me and girls went there one night and found it easy to find parking...however we waited for about ten min. Not too bad of a wait but I would have suspected that more so in clubs in Chicago and not DC. But I digress... The inside is simple, modern, and trendy with several different levels, each with their own type of music. The top floor-rap (hardcore rap too... I love rap but this was stuff I didn't even know). The Main floor was house/trance..or what some urbanites call Techno (hate that word). The music was good, songs were familiar, and half naked dancers pranced around on boxes making for interesting conversation. The lower level is the latina/ reggae-ton music. that was pretty fun and highly underrated in my opinion. it was laid back and everyone on the lower floor appeared to be having a good time. The positive aspect to this is that you can kinda mix up your repertoire of music if you just don't know what your in the mood for on that particular night. The not so good aspects to this is the extreme crowd difference in each room. The drinks were made well. I am strictly a Goose and tonic with lime kinda gal, which tend to be pricey, but quite frankly if you are in any club or lounge in any major city you are going to pay for your drinks and if your so worried about it...may I suggest sticking to your local watering hole. As for the age/type of peeps in this club....it varied so much I can't even pinpoint what type of crowd this place brought in. definitely a slightly younger crowd, but not obnoxious in my opinion...well there were some but it was minimal. I probably knew about half of the songs they played, and the ones I knew weren't great, so the music was a non-starter. There was a private event that was going on at the same time and the people there were clearly CREEPY. the redeeming quality was the fun and friends. Only good for those under 21. Last night me, my wife, and 4 other friends went to Ultrabar, a Hip Hop club to celebrate a couple birthdays amongst the people in our group (We're all black with the exception of my wife). We stepped into line and waited like everyone else. We were stopped at the front of the line and told that we couldn't get in because myself and another friend of mine were wearing Jordans (TO A HIP HOP CLUB!). We spoke with who I presume was the manager and we asked what shoes were banned from the club. They told us Jordans and Timberlands which I found particularly interesting because those shoe brands are very much related to black culture. You guys draw your conclusions from that yourself. So we were then told that the only way to get in was to get a VIP table which would cost us a minimum of $400 simply because of our shoes. We drove nearly an hour to get there so we decided we'd just bite the bullet and pay the money. Amazingly, while we were waiting in line, I saw a white guy with Jordans walk out of the club. I stopped him and asked him did he have to get a table and he told me he got in for free. At this point, I had decided that this establishment wasn't getting a dime from us. When I mentioned to security what I had discovered, I heard another manager scream "F--- THEM, DON'T LET THEM IN!" We then went on to go somewhere else and still had tons of fun for the night. Needless to say, last night didn't go as expected but I'm glad we didn't give a dime to that club. Please be wary of who you give your money to. This place is a Hip Hop club that profits off of black influence. But they make rules that seem to attempt to limit the amount of black people in their establishment. 3 of the 6 people in our group are Active Duty military. We do our part in fighting for this country and it's sad to see that people are still treated this way. I am not saying that this place is inherently racist but I am saying that my experience with the club made me raise my eyebrows. I went with a buddy from San Fran on October 30th for Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso of the Swedish House Mafia. Our reaction: this place's right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. Not so great: * The ground floor is poorly laid out. The dance floor should not be a main avenue to get anywhere else in the bar. We were getting shoved around by people having to walk though the crowd all night. * The coat check that night was all the way at the back end of the bar in the basement... so you have to push your way through the dance floor to get there. * The DJ booth was not a respectable DJ booth for a bar this sized devoted to dance music. They did have the requisite equipment (CDJ-1000MK3's and a Pioneer DJM-600 or -800 mixer), but the monitor speakers were on stands to either side of the booth. They should at least be flown from above the booth in this instance so they don't obstruct the view. Also, the DJ booth should have a table back there for the DJ's entourage. I think there was duct work obstructing view of the DJ booth, too. * Cover was a little too high ($15, and I was on a guest list!) and drinks were absurd at $10 for a Bacardi and Coke. I didn't drink. * The sound needs to be EQ'd for the room a bit better. Highs were overbearing and distorting. * The really old guys in shiny shirts on the prowl. * The "line" system in front of the bar. Better than previously listed: * Those lasers! I freaking want those! * The rest of the lighting setup. * All the good looking college kids. Though I'm not *that* old, I still feel a little bit skeevy, though, because those kids had black X's on their hands. * The mostly confusingly empty "Eurotrash Deck" at the balcony bar overlooking the ground floor. One Eurotrash guy was sporting a Euromullet. * People actually came out for the music, unlike many places I've been to in DC. * There were smaller hip hop rooms on other floors. Though I don't care for hip hop and top 40, I like this, because it get's those "listeners" out of the zones where the music matters. I've certainly experienced worse in DC. I guess I'd go back here again for a good DJ. District Ignition and the Snatch parties seem to bring some good DJs through. read more

First and last time clubbing here. I never ever go to clubs, not my scene, but came out just because my friends wanted to go since we were in the area. The bouncers were so rude. Most of the guys that come here are creepers. Just no. I saw multiple people throw up, and the person who cleans it up just puts down paper towels. No sanitation or anything. I am positive I was purposely overcharged by a female bartender on Saturday night. I was there for a bachelorette party and I asked the bartender in the Chrome Lounge for a glass of water for the bride-to-be after we had just purchased drinks, as my friend was not feeling well. She told me she could not give me a bottle of water and I would have to purchase one for $4. As one can imagine, I was a little incredulous that a bar would rather someone was sick and possibly have alcohol poisoning than provide her with a glass of water! I distinctively wrote $4.00 on my credit card receipt and there is no way after my discussion with the bartender that she could have even thought I'd tip her--let alone tip her $4 on the water. She should be fired--this is fraud and I wonder how many times she has done it before. read more

The drinks I had were pretty good, and the music was dance-able. However -- I won't be going back to Ultrabar. Perfect example of a downtown club that has a huge line just for the sake of having a line. My floor was EMPTY when I left, and I walk outside to see tons of people waiting in the cold -- some of them getting patted down TSA style? What?? Long story short, I've lived in DC for 3+ years and have visited my fair share of clubs and bars in Dupont, H Street, Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill, Arlington, and U Street. Last night reminded me why I stay away from downtown. I have NEVER encountered such a rude staff member at a bar/club in any place in DC - or any city. Keep in mind it was early -- maybe 10 pm -- and our floor was fairly empty, some people hanging out at the bar but not really anyone in the open space. One of my friends put her coat behind her legs, up against the bar --- my other friend put her coat + my coat on a seat (multiple tables in the room with not a SINGLE person sitting at them). One of the staff members runs up to us with his flashlight, shines it on both the coat up against the bar and the coats on the seat... he GRABS them, and holds them hostage while he's lecturing us. He got in my face and said, "I want you to listen to me - are you listening? There is ONE PLACE for coats in this club. That place is downstairs at coat check. If i see coats ANYWHERE else, I kick that person out of the bar, and that person is going to be YOU. Understand?" I had planned on staying for quite a few more drinks, but at that point I (and the 4 girls I was with) walked out of there. If we'd been politely asked I would have had no problem, but the in-your-face threats to a 20-something girl were a little overkill, I feel. Another thing that was annoying -- my guy friend wanted to buy me + my friend our last drink - but there is a $25 minimum for a credit card. So I had to step in and pay cash because he had none, and he was on his way out so he didn't want to order more than 2. Also -- they charge you $4 for water. Never in my life have I been to a place that won't give you a glass of water for free (plus a tip, because I appreciate that if I'm a designated driver). There are much better places with friendlier staff, free water, no cover charge, and no ridiculous line. read more

We waited in line for an hour before finding out that there are actually two lines: one for credit cards and a (much shorter) line for cash. Kind of seemed like a way to get more people in after midnight so that they could charge, but I won't jump to conclusions. Heads up that a $30 minimum is required to pay with card at the bar. Overall it was an *okay* but somewhat dirty club. Being in my mid twenties, I was not a fan of the young and trashy clientele this club attracts. Probably wouldn't go back. I would love to give a review of this place but unfortunately I never got in. I was with a group and we had VIP passes and were getting 3 tables. The door guy was like $20 a head. Had to have been some sort of mix up. So one of the promoters came outside to bring us in and my friend was like why were you trying charge us to the door man. Went there last Friday for my bachelor party with my buddies. It was nice college atmosphere, music was pretty good. It was nice being in a place where people have to actually dress up! We got a table on the level where you enter. We had a nice elevated view of the floor, the cocktail waitress was cool and we even got a free bottle from one of the managers which was awesome! Went recently for the first time in years to take my cousin out for her 20th. We all remebred this place as the crowded creepy place wed go when we were young cuz options were limited till we turned 21. Always seemed full of mostly middle aged creepy dudes staring at underage girls. However last trip was a lot of fun and a good first club experience . maybe it was dumb luck but perhaps a good sign this place is heading in the right direction. Still more creepers than your average club but not trouble some the last two recent tries. Apparently its being used as a spot for some large 20s 30s meet up. Well I went here for the first time Friday night. We arrived around 10:45 pm and we're given wristbands and shown to our table. It was a huge line, just as many other yelpers forewarned, so I was thankful we didn't have to stand in it. Once inside, it was relatively calm for the first hour. The music was mostly edm and a lot of young, under 21 looking types. Somewhere around 1230 the place became packed and the music improved! I began having fun. I saw more variety in the ages and the entire place was energetic. We left around 2 to head to RoseBar, but overall it wasn't a bad first time there. I like to try new places. Be aware if you have men in your group, they can be very nitpicky with the dress code for guys. I won't be returning here, because It's not the best place for a fun night in the Nation's Capital, but hey, I can scratch them off the list. read more

Ultra Bar for me was really really fun. The music was great and I love the monitors on the wall. Its set up really nice and I also love the diversity of the music. I knew just about all of the songs. I think that Ultra Bar is a good place for people 18-25 it had a really big young crowd. So if your older that, its not the place for you. Its like 2 blocks from the gallery place china town metro station...so walking distance is good...although you should leave the club at 2:30 so you don't miss the last train. And the lines are kind of long so go early!!! read more

Ultra Bar definitely did a great job of maximizing space despite space constraints. It is a very long and narrow club, which when I arrived at 11pm thought poorly of it, but when it got packed after midnight it actually looked really cool, making for a very intimate atmosphere. Was not a fan of the $9 jack & cokes, but I was very impressed by the attitude of the bartenders and security. Everyone appeared to be happy to be there (especially the bartenders, who, whenever they weren't making drinks, were casually rocking back and forth behind the bar). One thing to perhaps reconsider is the extremely steep stairwell in the back of the club. A girl in high heels trying to head downstairs may end up face-planting. Nonetheless, really enjoyed the atmosphere, wonderful sound system, nice layout. read more

Went here for a EDM show. Complaints: Bouncers were retarded. Guy tried to say that even though we bought tickets online for a 10pm show, we needed to stand outside (with no line) for 30 minutes because we were late. Fortunately another bouncer walked up and waved us by. First guy was a jerk though. Bartender added a 20% tip automatically for 5 fireball shots. (11 dollar tip). I protested and adjusted the tip down. Checked the credit card later and it looks like he charged the full amount. Fireball shots tasted watered down. Bathrooms - The only sit down stall was out of order, Sign looked like it had been there a while. Not that I needed it, but for a bar that thinks they're high end, I expect them to maintain bathrooms. Crowd - was pretty dressed down. Maybe one of the best clubs in DC, but the steep cover will deter you after your first time. The staff is not friendly and some guys are really creepy but that's a given around downtown. I have never actually been in Ultrabar, but I will never go back after my only experience there. A couple Thursdays ago, I went with two of my guy friends and four girls. Before we went in, we all drank a little since we're underage and couldn't buy drinks in there. The girls probably drank twice as much as we did (and randomly, us guys had peppermint schnapps so our breath smelled minty), yet at the door, they checked our breath and although it was faint, they wouldn't let us in. Meanwhile, they let our girls (who were drinking normal vodka and thus smelled strongly) in without a problem. Also, while we were sitting outside being pissed off, a girl that we knew to only be 19 walked up completely drunk and literally fell on her face, and of course was then let in. The fact that we are underage and drinking is out of the question; clearly Ultrabar has double standards and I will not ever come near this place ever again because of that. read more

I have never had a very positive opinion of UltraBar, but since my friend had a table (and also since I haven't been there in about three years) I decided to give it another try. When we arrived, they couldn't find our table reservation. This wasn't a huge issue because there were literally no people in VIP. When the staff seated us and brought our bottle, all was well. We sat down and began pouring drinks. However, our waitress neglected to tell us that any underage patrons had to drink out of a plastic cup. So we poured our underage friend a glass of cranberry juice in a glass. About 45 seconds later, five bouncers came to escort her out claiming that she had been drinking. They claimed that they had been watching her on the security cameras. Funny, that if they were actually watching her on the security cameras instead of fabricating what happened and attempting to justify their existence, they would have easily seen that only cranberry juice was poured into her glass. So, needless to say, my tiny 19 year old friend was unnecessarily forcibly removed from UltraBar (although she was fully cooperating with the bouncers). The rest of my friends kept shifting around our VIP section because the air conditioning vent was soaking the seats. We finished our bottle and left. Sad that we all could have had a great night, despite my original view of UltraBar. The DJ was playing throwback jams and our bottle was delicious. But I'm pretty certain I (nor anyone I know) will ever go to UltraBar again... or at least until their bouncers decide to leave their false sense of entitlement behind and actually do their job. read more

So I was finally coerced into going to UltraBar by a few friends. I had a bad feeling about it before we even walked up to get in one of the many various lines that they have stretched down the block. I've heard a lot of reviews from friends, friends-of-friends, etc, and had read a lot of reviews from websites like Yelp that paint UltraBar in a negative light. Yet for some reason I figured (if all my friends were going..) I should probably just suck it up and go, in order to form my own opinion about it. Which is why I'm telling you right now not to waste your time or money on a place like this. Seriously, reeeaally listen to the comments you're reading on here. I should have stuck to my guns and I'm sure I would have had a better time had I tried any other club! Or even, say, staying home and reading! I had a terrible night and wasted my $20. Almost everything that everyone has said on here has proven true from my experience there and I will not ever be going back. The bartenders were rude (!) , the women who were handing out beads were incredibly rude (!!!) , and the 'bouncers' at the door were just downright mean and unprofessional! Music was sub-par, guys were (to re-iterate other commenters) creepy and quite grabby, and it was just generally not a fun night from the moment I stepped up to have my ID checked to the moment I stepped out the door! I can honestly say that I don't understand how this establishment is still in business when all the staff that I encountered were so rude! Call me old fashioned for thinking such a thing, I guess! The only decent thing about the night is that I got my daily workout in from hiking up all those stairs and pushing creepy guys off of me. The RACIST club EVER! I came here with some of my friends. The line was really long so that we had to wait for about two hour. But it was ok, it's acceptable because it was Friday night and we weren't in guest list. After couples of hours, we reached the entrance, and we were supposed to get in the club. HOWEVER, my Asian friends got rejected because he did not have "Valid ID" According to the bouncer, ID issued in outside of the States is not valid. But the thing is, I am from France and showed him ID issued in France, but he accepted me, but not my friends from Asia. This is such a bullshit. I'd give no star at all to this club. First time going out in DC, friends had passes for the Ultrabar first on Saturday night. Noticed the line was huge but skipped it being on the guest list. Being a 18+ night club i kind of expected it to be overcrowded. The drinks were kind of expensive but luckily i was already drunk from guys night out and the party bus. I'm a type of person who can dances all night and I know there's certain people who like to stand around and act cool or give you judgement looks because you're breaking it down while they watch. But half the time I could hardly dance because there would be a river flow of people going in and out in and out contently, that got real annoying. DJ's were good, I like how you got different dance floors to go to. I might just stick to 21+ crowds though next time I venture out in DC so its less crowded and less X's on hands. read more
