Where do I begin? First, I agree with Maxwell S. that Ultrabar (formerly Home) is probably one of the worst clubs ever. Yes, ever. In or out of DC. I really wanted to enjoy Ultrabar, however they probably have ruined every part of going out. We had a VIP table upstairs in Chroma for a party. The only nice part was getting to skip the line, which if you wait that long to get into this place you should be kicked in the neck. From there you get a confusing regimen of 3 separate stamps, 1 ticket, and 1 wrist band. The "Open Bar til 11" promotion is a farce. We got inside at 11:05 and I think they had let in about 20 people at that point. So if you are one of the first 20, I would take your free drinks and run. There was one bartender for the entire main floor bar at that point, so I think they gave out 3 free drinks. First they got the table reservation wrong and moved us to another (smaller) table in order to accommodate some girl's 21st birthday party. Watching her middle-aged parents make out was beautiful. The rest of the crowd wasn't much better. If you're a guy willing to lower your standards, you can pick up something here easily. If you're looking for hot girls, this is not the place at all. For the ladies, if you want to meet some embassy trash wearing sunglasses inside and greasy guys in black tank tops, 4th floor is the place to be. The bouncers, wow. What a bunch of clowns. For some reason they blocked off the men's room on the 4th floor. There was a dedicated bouncer for the other restrooms (Yes! A bathroom monitor!), who would not men use the unisex restroom and would then get in people's faces when they asked. So, somehow you should've known that the unisex bathroom was women one. Congratulations fat white bouncer in the Lacoste hat, you were the best bathroom monitor I have seen (except for the blatant turning the other way for obvious coke use). So, to take a whiz, you had to go downstairs, which created a problem since other bouncers had blocked off the stairway back up. Teamwork! I had to wait over an hour to get back up since the "owner" told me I did not have a table and there was no chance I was getting upstairs (after being introduced to him an hour earlier). If they didn't have my credit card I would've given up and left. However, anyone coming to meet us was turned away. I couldn't tell you how many people probably left their credit cards overnight because they couldn't get back to close out their $45 minimum bar tabs (So, all in all, cool party since nobody could actually get to it.). Also, they were way too strict and overzealous. What other club has a problem with girls dancing on tables? Anytime there was a problem and you asked a bouncer for a manager, they would point to another bouncer and say they were the owner. Correct me if I'm wrong, but what club owner spends a Saturday night checking wrist stamps in a stairway or blocking off the service entrance? In an attempt to be positive, I'll concede that if the crowd wasn't shoulder to shoulder, the main floor had potential (whoever thought that projecting a crappy movie on the wall was cool is an idiot). The bedroom floor was pretty nice dcor but basically half of the room was a standing mob around the staircase trying to get to the 4th floor. Chroma was tiny, overcrowded, and too hot. I guess they don't have A/C since there's one giant fan on the wall that was going full blast (It's snowing outside as I write this review). Would've been nice to step outside for fresh air and come back, but after trying to go downstairs the first time, it's a lost cause. For most of the night, the music in Chroma was house and better than downstairs but they made sure to ruin that too. I haven't heard "Hips Don't Lie" in a club in months, but last night was treated to it... twice. Our waitress was nice but was handling about eight tables. The fact that I had to give Ultrabar a star is an insult to other establishments that have actually earned that one star. If you want to stand around outside, stand around inside, and be treated like crap (even as a "VIP"), Ultrabar is the destination. I've had more fun in dentists' offices. If there's a place that deserves all its negative reviews on Yelp, this place definitely takes the cake, HANDS DOWN!!! I am downright baffled why this place is still open (perhaps a sign of the shadiness that is D.C.'s nightlife?). All I know is, if there's a nightclub/bar in HELL (and I do not mean this in a cool, dystopian way), this would definitely be it. This realization is more than enough to make me, a die-hard skeptic/atheist, want to drop down on my knees and vow my eternal devotion to God. How do I explain the atrociousness that is Ultrabar? Let me briefly count the ways. *Note that this is merely a glimpse of all the ills that define this place, as there simply wouldn't be enough space to describe in detail how this establishment represents the prime place where souls go to die: 1. INCOMPETENT/RUDE STAFF: From the bouncer to the bartenders to the coat check people, NO ONE IS HAPPY TO SEE YOU, and NO ONE wants you to have a good time. Expect indignant glares, exasperated sighs for the tiniest of requests, and LOTSSSSSSSS of attitude. 2. POOR LAYOUT DESIGN: Overcrowded and insufficient use of space. Expect to be elbowed in the head/eye, inappropriately grabbed at (especially if you are female), and aggressively shoved and stepped on. Limited space is NOT an excuse for poor design- just look at Flash for an example of how a small space in D.C. can still manage to appear open, sophisticated, and welcoming. 3. PRETENTIOUSNESS: The level of pretentiousness that overshadows Ultrabar is honestly amusing. I am not sure why this place continues to try so hard at putting up an image that it is the bee's knees of nightclubs. You are NOT New York City/Miami/Hollywood/Vegas. You are not even a legitimate or justified excuse for existence. STOP pretending to be anything other than a crappy D.C. establishment where unfortunate souls, oblivious of your disgusting ways, happen to step foot in. Example of pretentiousness: keeping the line long and preventing others from coming in when the club is 80% EMPTY!!! And this is coming from someone who did not wait in line in. 4. CRIME: This is perhaps THE defining hallmark of the soul-sucking shittiness that is Ultrabar. I am still flabbergasted at the amount of crime that goes on here; It leaves me more than convinced that this place is an UNDERGROUND CRIME RING!!! Sure, one can say that all nightclubs/bars/lounges are basically "hotspots" for crimes/assaults-- inebriated people who are raging and YOLOIng like there's no tomorrow do not usually make the most aware or alert individuals. Yet the degree and nature of such crimes, and most importantly, the COMPLETE nonchalant and uncooperative attitudes of the staff, are simply disgusting and unacceptable. Just see the other Yelp reviews for a sample of the crimes. Cell phone stolen? Check!!!!!!!! Violent assaults? Check!!!!!! Wrong amounts charged onto your bar tab? (and the refusal to fix the mistake and charge the correct amount?) Check!!!!!!!! And it should come as no surprise to anyone that the staff will do NOTHING to help you WHEN these crimes happen- expect eye rolls and laughs instead (I guess the staff at Ultrabar finds the suffering of other human beings humorous). I am not sure of many things in life, but I firmly believe Ultrabar is an underground crime ring. ------- As evident from my sparse reviews, I do not write lots of Yelp reviews. I am not a Yelp Elite. Most of the time I am too lazy to write about my experiences. But ANGER is a strange motivation for action (in fact, I am typing this review on my phone as opposed to writing it on the laptop, simply because I was overcome with burning rage at the thought of this place and the phone was closer to me). I highly encourage anyone who is dissatisfied with this place to voice their experiences and file a report with the Better Business Bureau. So this was my first time going here. I decided that since I had never been to a club and am still a year too young to go to a real one this one would suffice. I will say that it looked pretty decent. Unfortunately, three of the four floors it has were closed down for some reason that night. The DJ was good for about two hours but then started playing some stuff I had never heard of. My biggest complaint, which I can't blame entirely on the club, is that there were a ton of super old, creepy guys there. These guys were seriously in there 30s-40s. Obviously these guys were at an 18+ club hoping to sucker a girl as young as possible into "getting out of here bc I'm bored". They stood about a foot away from me and my friends several different times just staring at us. We literally had to relocate ourselves on the dance floor numerous times bc they wouldn't get the hint that they were disgusting. I personally believe all 18+ clubs should have an age cap. 30-something's should not be getting in. Yeah, some girls like older guys, but come on! The few more age appropriate guys here were pretty much just as bad, if not worse. They groped up on us several times. I am a pretty blunt person. Whenever a guy tried to touch me I would flat-out tell them to get away. Needless to say we got called b*tches quite a few times. One guy actually walked away from me bc I told him I didn't want to partake in the dance-style" they call grinding. He seemed to think that all girls loved to. Nuh-uh. This of course isn't the club's fault, but it did make the night a little hard to enjoy knowing my friends and I couldn't dance for too long without being rubbed up on. If for some reason you decide to brave the (basically) pedophiles and go here, be weary of the $25 minimum you have to spend if you are going to be using a card here. I of course couldn't drink so it didn't bug me, but for the 21+ crowd. The cover is also $20 for the under 21 year-olds. I used go to Ultrabar every Thursday and Saturday good place . But the staff and the owner suck ! I hate this place ! I would get harassed every time I went by the bouncers. I'd tell them to stop and they wouldn't so I told my boyfriend on numorous accounts to get them to stop and even then it would continue. One night my boyfriend and I stepped out to smoke a cigarette and the biggest bouncer grabbed my butt my boyfriend saw and told him to stop or he will call the cops for harassment he and my boyfriend start arguing so we look for the manager of the club Sheldon (who might I add is the biggest creep ever and definitely let me drink under age at the time because he wanted to get with me ) he comes up and we tell him what happened and Sheldon ,he brought another manager up who was less help. So we left that night with the bouncer telling us we were never allowed back for telling his managers on him .... We went back about 2 weeks later and he wouldn't allow us in and we talked to a manager jimmy told him the story and jimmy said we weren't allowed in BECAUSE WE PRESSED CHARGES ON THE BOUNCER! EVEN IF I DID PRESS CHARGES ON HIM IT'S MY RIGHT ! Which never happened but I wish I would've that night bc it was uncalled for to grab my ass! I wonder what other stuff goes on at this club unnoticed bc its sick .....So I hate this club I will never go back and I hope you guys change your staff completely especially dexter the fat black bouncer ! Ultrabar has got to be the best club ive been to in dc! I've been there a few times, but after this weekend I'm going to be there a lot more! I used to go to midtown but it got boring over there. Ok so I got to ultrabar and there was a pretty big line. We were going to just leave when we saw it but the girl in front of us said that she comes here all the time and it would go fast. She was right, and we got in within a few minutes. Cover was normal for dc clubs, $20, which is a lot, but again, thats normal for dc clubs. The crowd on the main floor was pretty good, I'd say between ages 18 - 30, people dressed nicer than most other clubs around here, and the people themselves seemed nicer and smarter too. i'm used to idiots and ignorant assholes and morons spilling drinks and grabbing up on my ass and hitting on me and the girls, but i didnt have that problem here. the music was great, and it was different on every floor. If you love dancing, ultrabar is the place for you. 4 floors, 4 djs, 4 music styles, and plenty of space to DANCE! my favorite floor was actually the basement, which was some tiny ass room thats probably smaller than my living room, but the dj down there was banging out some crazy techno and the girls and i went crazy! i looooooooove techno! drink prices were about the same as other clubs around here, i think. guys bought them for me anyways so i dont care haha. the drinks were strong as hell too. i was so drunkkkkkk! it was such a great night, all the girls had a blast. i cant wait to come back. ultrabar is sooo great! read more

The reviews here aren't lying at all. Ive only been here twice and while the first time 4 years ago was fine I guess, apart from it being unbearably crowded at times, visit #2 was a steaming pile of dogshit. The employees here are total misandrists and misogynists, more so the former, from the bouncers to the bartenders to the promoters. They up-charge men on drinks all the time (happened to my buddy, I dont drink) and change the prices of admission or service based on how sexually attracted they are to you. We were charged more then other people waiting in line, and it wasnt ladies get in free night or whatever. Staff are rude to both sexes, and sometimes a little too touchy with female patrons. Saw this countless times. Also, lets talk about the dress code. They pretend to have one, but they really dont, they just pick and chose based on what archetype you are, same as everything else. Slutty looking 20 something girl? Wear whatever you want! African American man wearing J's? 50/50 chance you're going to get racially profiled. And what the fuck is up with letting minors in here. It happens; they wont tell you it happens, but ive seen it happen, hell ive known people who work here who have enabled it. Its creepy, but considering the majority of people who regularly go here are losers who try to grope women without consent, im sure they could care less. I myself, care a lot, as I think it is unethical and pedophilloic. Just, pick a different club, damn, there are plenty of them in DC. This one just isnt worth supporting. read more

This was our first time ging here. It far exceeded my expectations. At times I found it a bit crowded but didn't detract from overall enjoyment. The ease of getting in was nice once I knew which line was for ID check. The manager treated me this evening in honor my coming birthday later this month. The bartender did a great job on my drink and I made sure to let her know. Unfortunately there was a little drama with some of people there and they to be escorted out. However, the security staff handled it calmly and professionally. They kept their cool while these individuals weren't being very nice. I found the dj's did a stellar job keeping the crowd hooping all night. At some point they have a massive balloon drop. There was even an attendant in the ladies room to make sure that it was stocked with enough supplies to get all the ladies through the night without running out of important things like toilet paper or hand soap. (Two things that always seems to run before the end of the night. Overall I was extremely happy with the club and the staff. My niece and I will be planning to go again soon. The one thing I would like is easy access to a seating area on the main floor that isn't VIP. It's nice that is an available option if you happen to be a VIP otherwise you'll have to either go downstairs or upstairs to find a place to sit. I believe that could be easily fixed. read more

Last time I was there was late October for I threw a birthday party for my girlfriend. I talked to a promoter and he was able to set us up with a SWEET deal. We opted for a table in the V.I.P. section of the club called Chroma. When we arrived the promoter was not available on hand so he called his boss and his boss took care of us. We all entered for free and got stamped with a VIP logo. He walked us up to our VIP table and told us to wait for a bit as a waiter(? don't know what they are called) would serve us. The price of the table was great and the service was as well. Our waiter would return every so often to check on how we were doing. After an hour or so our whole party, of eight, wanted to check out the rest of the club since it was our first time there. As we explored the club we found out they have an arrangement of different music on different levels. The music on each level was good and we all had fun at each different level. After an hour of exploring we finished the night at our V.I.P. table with another bottle since we were all having a good time. I always recommend this place to any of my friends that want to go out and they all agree that it is a place you keep going to regularly without tiring yourself from a great crowd, music, and great service. This place is 18+ to enter and 21+ to drink. There is a $20 cover charge but if you go on Saturday with the facebook flyr, it's free entry until 11 o'clock. The line gets very long but moves quickly. There are 4 floors with different music playing in each. The first floor play dance/techno/house music. The second floor is latin music. The top is a mix of hip hop and dance. Then there is the basement floor where it plays hip hop and dance. The basement floor has some sitting areas where you can relax for a bit. The other floors have sitting areas but for VIP. After 12 the first floor gets packed. You could hardly move around, so does the very top floor. The crowd is usually a lot of young college kids but we also see some older folks in there sometime. Majority of the girls who go there are usally looking for attention since they are all dressed up. The music is reasonably loud. It's a good dancing vibe and if you get tired of one area, you can always go to a different floor. The drinks are pretty expensive. ranges from $8-16. If you like loud music, fast moving, crowded environment and looking to be seen, this would be the place for you. It's more fun to go with a lot of friends and get a table. read more

I had to 5 star this night club. It is the only mega club left in NW DC with a night life atmosphere like no other in the city. Both Friday & Saturday Nights there are sooooooooo much fun. Every Friday Night they have a big name DJ from around the world come and perform on their main floor, the party gets so sick. Dancers everywhere and females as well. Saturdays Night is ladies night, which pretty much speaks for itself, you can just imagine how wild the party gets. Def. the best Sat. night party in the city. I have even caught myself going back there on back to back nights on several occasions in the past years. Another big plus is that the bottles are priced very fair compared to the other clubs in DC, under the circumstances of how hott this club is, and how everybody wants to party there VIP style. Since my friends and I love popping bottles every time we go out, it is a huge plus for us. It has 5 floors w/ 4 DJ's killing it, so there is a lot of room for you to move to get comfortable and enjoy the night. I def. recommend this spot for any time you or your friends want to go out and party in DC. Maybe I will see you there next time and we can get a drink together. LOL... read more

Probably the worst club in DC for a few reasons. This review is based on my observations and experiences from going to UltraBar a few times. 1. The only reason that 18+ clubs exist is to use teenage girls as a draw for older men. If you are a younger girl, you will be groped and touched inappropriately, and the people working won't care. 2. They will find a way to rip you off. If you are a younger man, you will pay a $30 cover even though $20 is advertised. If you are on a VIP list, you will be stuck in line until the list closes and you have to pay the cover. 3. The dress code seems designed to keep out black and gay men. Men have to wear khakis or jeans. Gay men are turned away for wearing shorter shorts or tighter pants. Black men are turned away for wearing sneakers. What you are left with are aging frat boys in a sad Vineyard Vines polo and baggy pants. 4. If you are a gay man, the people working there will tell you to stop if you are dancing with another guy. Gay women, however, are welcome, if only to please the perversions of the older straight men.
