I don't really know what to say. This place isn't bad per say, but not sure why you would choose it over any other option. I came here to meet a buddy who happened to be running late. I bought a $7 beer and took it up to the 2nd lever area as that was the only seats available. After 30 mins or so of waiting on my buddy and not being able to chat up any strangers, I just called said friend and met him down the street. Is what it is, you might like, I dunno. read more

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience here at a jazz jam on a slow Wednesday evening. The bartender was very rude. She was snarky, rolled her eyes multiple times, and gave one member of our group a hard time with inappropriate comments. After a few minutes we realized that we would not have an enjoyable night with this bartender on the job, so we promptly left. With our friend being harassed, we decided it was not worth spending an evening here. Perhaps on nights with other employees, this place could be nice, but sadly we were unable to join in on the jams!! read more

This place will definitely give you heaven and hell all in one night lol. After several times of walking pass (because it looked too young and rowdy) we decided to stop in. We actually went into the downstairs area (basement) and they were playing old school hip hop. It was very dark and dingy looking. However, the drinks were really good. We also ventured upstairs and it became a lil piece of heaven because me and my now BF had our first kiss here ( I know some place for a first kiss, right). The bathroom upstairs is off in the cut and doesn't lock/close properly so I was basically trying to balance holding the door closed as well as maintaining my flow lol. After more drinks, dances, and kisses the place immediately turned to hell when two females started to fight. Now I can't say that fighting takes place here every weekend but the place has to be named heaven and hell for something. I think you can get the best of both in this one location. I always pregame before I come here, So I'm pretty lit before I get here. But from what I do recall from the last time couple times I was here, Bathrooms were pretty disgusting. Females can be (You know what).. Not even going to go there. ANYWAYS The music is usually good. It can get real hot in there fast. Drinks are not pricey, they are actually pretty reasonable. Hell, floor 1: Named appropriately. At just after midnight three ginormous curly haired women showed off their freakum moves. A middle aged drunk man in a faux leather jacket and sunglasses hung on to the ceiling, appropriately three inches above his head, as he danced. The Hell DJ deserves one-third of the single star allotted for this review for creatively laying reggae over some danceable hip hop. Purgatory, floor 2: Where we entered - I looked around, a little bit in shock - and was told by a friend that the place is even better than it used to be. I had a hard time understanding that the blistering, bare design was intentional. We ordered drinks, and another one-third of the single star goes to the too-busy-for-you bartender who made up for making us wait 25 minutes for a drink by filling my jack & coke with pure jack. Heaven, floor 3: Bad disco lights, bright blue paint, a strobe light, and top 40s laid over bad late-90s pop make this place another Adams Morgan institution to ignore. Final one-third of the single star for the five or so good looking men I saw on this floor. That kind of made me happy for a few minutes, until I realized I probably wouldn't ever want to date someone who thought that this was a cool place to spend their Saturday night. On the way out, a drunk db wearing a wedding veil (must have been his, yes, -his- bachelorette party) slipped down the stairs and proceeded to knock over some AdMo sign pointing patrons into another dirty bar. FOR THURSDAY NIGHTS ONLY!!! If you love 80s music, you must check out Heaven & Hell on a Thursday night. Actually I IMPLORE you to go there if love the 80s. I don't know Heaven & Hell is like on any other nights, but I strictly go there for the Thursday 80s experience. I consider myself a pretty big 80s fan, not huge, but knowledgeable enough to recognize and enjoy most of the songs the DJ drops. When you go here on a Thursday night, you go strictly to enjoy the music. The decor stinks, so don't expect the same decor you would find at like some of the lounges located on K St. The crowd is very mix, so you'll get a good balance of men and women, as well as a huge range of ages. Since the music is 80s, the place does attract some older people...people who were actually conscious during the 80s. No dress code either...and I mean NO DRESS CODE. You will see people dressed up like they're going to LOVE night club to people dressed like the just came with Doc Brown and the DeLorean from 1983...and everything in between. The music is strictly 80s, but sometimes I think they do stray into early 90s a little bit. If you are an average 80s music fan, you will be able to recognize many of the tunes. Of course the DJ will play some tracks that are for the more hardcore listeners. As you walk inside you will notice TVs hanging around the venue showing all different 80s music video as well as one huge project screen. The place does not start filling up with people until at least midnight. Once it's packed, however, it's good times. You will definitely see all sorts of crazy dancing techniques. What else would you expect on 80s night? As the night progresses, the DJ will start dumping balloons as well as those bendable glow sticks (you know the ones you see at county carnivals) onto the crowd. ***Upstairs next to the DJ booth, there's a list where you can write down songs that you wish the DJ to play.*** I can't remember for sure, but if you arrive before either 10 or 10:30 PM, you will not be charged a cover. If you arrive after the deadline, however, you do have to pay a $7 cover, but you do get a ticket for a free shot (some sort of house shot)! I've been several times to Heaven & Hell on Thursday nights, and I have always had a good time. Let me change that...I have always had a GREAT time. I don't know what the other nights are like at Heaven & Hell, but basing it strictly on Thursday nights, I give it 5 stars. P.S. Be careful if you have work the next day. Words can't even describe my love for Heaven & Hell -- I mean that's where I met my husband of 3 years (9 years together). How can you top that...it's a funny story that doesn't really need to be told one more time. During my wedding the pastor mentioned Heaven & Hell and used it to make a funny analogy about marriage. I guess without H&H I would not have met my husband so I must give it 5 stars!! And also for the long-haired blond guy who yells to the street "Heaven & Hell" -- anyone who has lived in DC long enough knows who I am referring to and god bless that guy. Heaven & Hell is NOT a glamorous club. It DOES NOT have any bells and whistles or any type of ambiance and/or nice décor. It is just an urban club in Adams Morgan that has three levels. I have been to Heaven & Hell twice and I had a good time both times. People dance, it is not a "stuck up" spot. There was not a fight inside the club either nite I have been....but Adams Morgan is infamous for drunken people walking along the strip, fighting or about to fight in the streets so...(shrugs shoulders...maybe we were lucky!) If your looking for R&B/Hip Hop to groove to...Heaven & Hell maybe your spot! Upon leaving the club be sure to grab your nice, greasy, jumbo pizza slice from any of the nearby pizza joints to end off your Adams Morgan experience the RIGHT WAY! LOL read more

I'm about 10 years too old (and I'm in my mid-20s) and 100 times too classy (and I have a tramp stamp) to wind up dancing here. Still, four of us were looking for a place to dance and get even more toasted, and we certainly found it (free shot with entry, though I don't remember paying cover--and it was tasty! we asked the recipe, but of course I can't remember it now, either). Late night dance parties? Oh yes. I would love to come back here and try the much-raved about 80's night, but I wasn't disappointed with the musical selection on Saturday night. Lots of hip hop, 90's, and 80's tunes to get down to. All sorts of people (and I really mean all sorts) come here to just have a good time; I doubt anyone was trying to take themselves too seriously (except for maybe the guys who were trying, unsuccessfully, to get with the ladies). Some trashy (read: sloshed bachelorette busting out of a nasty white corset outfit) and some not so trashy clientele made for a pretty diverse crowd. Not such a fan of the green and red glow lights everywhere. The drinks are pretty weak, and not cheap (especially considering they are served in plastic cups!). Bartender Sean is pretty sweet, and hails from NYC, so that gets him points in my book. $5 cover charge, plenty of room for dancing, open late. read more

Heavens/Hell NO! To begin with, don't go here on a Friday. My friends and I represented the only four people in Heaven - not that that's a bad thing, but it's nice to meet new people too. The drinks/drink specials may be cheap, but don't let that fool you. I ordered 6 of the specials for my friends and me, and I was charged for 8. I tried to be rational with the bartender, but in light of my friends wanting to bounce, I sucked it up, paid the inflated costs, and wrote "_ _ _ _ you" in the space that said "tip." Great diverse crowd most nights, always lots of fun. Good bartenders, but I do hate the cheap plastic cups. New Bathrooms and Bars added in the last month or 2, it's worth checking it out again!!! (last time I went they included a free coat check with the already cheap 5 dollar cover charge :-) If you drink is watered down, it means you did not tip enough, or broadcast signs of being a bar rookie, IE waving money, saying something dumb, like "I'll have a cranberry-vodka" or ordering drinks for the group of your friends one at a time. This can be a bit of a tourist spot, so the rookies will get weak drinks. It's standard at any DC club. Club Heaven and Hell is the only real club in Adams Morgan as far as I'm concerned. 3 floors open Thursday-Saturday. Thursday 80s night is the best night and is normally pretty packed by midnight, but can be a little slow earlier on, be patient, it is always rocking later. Came from out of town for the weekend with my friends and overall had a decent experience last night that was unfortunately overshadowed by one of the white male bartenders. He refused to serve water and did not inform us lightly of this- instead, he yelled at us, shooed us away with his hand and said they did not serve water (at a bar?! Really?! And this was after I had bought a drink too). I then went over to another bartender who very kindly served water to us. This man is harmful to your business and your customers. I went here with a group of friends after a birthday dinner. Is this place heaven AND hell? No, it's just hell. Yes, it is a bar in Adams Morgan, so nothing spectacular should be expected. The decor is gross, it is DARK, the drinks were weak and made with the cheapest alcohol imaginable, and there was a line run by some douche bags who yelled at people for smoking outside. The music was pretty much everything you would hear on the local urban stations. I didn't dislike it, but I can listen to the radio stations in my car for free. Keep in mind that there is a cover. I didn't even make it up to purgatory or heaven. It was so bad I left my friends there to go people watch. Adding to the pleasure of my experience was the fact that this place gets CROWDED. That is not due to popularity, it just happens to be small. Since it was crowded, I was lucky enough to smell someone's lack of deodorant/soap. This is not the fault of the owners, but it speaks volumes about who goes there. The table we were sitting at was suddenly taken over by 40 year old women. LOVED IT! The club was named exactly what it should have been named! With three floors and $5 admission you couldn't beat that deal!!! Entering on the 2nd floor I would have to say they was playing a little bit of everything Hip Hop, Reggae, Pop, Electronica, and so on. Upstairs...third floor...most;y electronica music...if you know me I love ALL TYPES of music...I feel like I am a great blender :) So with the 2nd and 3rd floor having AC...I went to see what the 1st floor had to offer. 1st FLOOR (BASEMENT)=HELL HIP HOP, RAP, CRUNK NO AC BUT........I HAD A BLAST!!!! I've only been here once and while the music was good, my friends were fun to party with, what I'm about to tell you negates all that. Take it with a grain of salt because this happened a few years ago. Some random guy decided to follow me around. The only guy in our group didn't help me fend him off; it took my college roommate telling him to f off to get the guy to leave. And where did he go, to the side, near where some of our coats were and he proceeded to drop trou and do a number 1. We had to go find bouncers to get this guy removed. OK so Heaven or hell was OKAY! I can't really get the part that dealt with Heaven being disco music, really nobody up there, and not so diverse crowd! Then you have Hell, which is primarily African Americans, Hot as HELL literally, rap and go-go music! Huuummm it definitely made me wonder was there an underlying message or something... Sad! Came here for an evening of celebrations after happy hour and made it in time for the "2 shots, 2 beers for $10" special (which ends at either 10 or 11). Each shot was more like 2-3 shots each. Then, they had a Smirnoff promotion going on - plenty of free shots to go around. Timewarped to a college frat party. Since we got there so early, we were able to secure a big table for ourselves. The music was mainstream and included a couple of salsa mixes (yay!) and Michael Jackson songs. As the other reviewers have made clear, this is not a classy place. Came here on a Saturday night with one of my friends who was in town and well i don't have much to say about this establishment. I guess the one plus is that it has plenty of floors and ample spacing fit for a huge crowd, unfortunately the huge crowd or even any crowd was what was missing from my latest experience here. In all fairness the weather was pretty cold outside so that may have contributed but overall it was a pretty uneventful experience. The heaven on the top floor hell on the bottom club concept seemed great in theory but on that night there just weren't enough individuals to fill either floor as everyone was sitting in a small basement like room on the bottom floor waiting for some sort of party to start despite the music being played by the DJ downstairs and in the completely empty upstairs area. Maybe I'll give this spot another shot during the summer but for now I don't recommend making this your primary party spot on a Saturday night in Adams Morgan. read more

My first time going up the staircase to enter this craphole I was told I would have to pay a $10 cover when there was only one half hour left before the bar closed. I thought to myself "what kind of place is this?!?" as I laughed my way down the staircase. Nearly two years later I got to find out. First of all, the place is frigid, despite there probably being well over 200 people there. The decor is absolutely the strangest I have seen in my entire life, with the exception of maybe a diner in the Bronx. They have black light murals painted on the wall. Not only that, these murals are based on actual paintings and artwork. If you are planning on making a pilgrimage to the Sistine Chapel at one point in your life, don't come here as you will be sorely disappointed. There were two bartenders at the bar I used - one guy and one girl. The man was dressed up rockabilly style and made a comment about "having three starving children" at home. I think he was joking, but I don't know his life. The lady bartender looked tired (this was still 9 pm, mind you). Really tired and seemed really confused. I ordered two rum & diet cokes, not that intense of an order that you have to repeat it back to me twice to make sure you comprehend it. But the drinks were cheap and once I was onto my third r&dc, I wasn't minding the place but I sure was embarrassed to tell my friends to meet me and had to leave. read more

Btw, the city should really build more parking lots. It's ridiculous that we have to go to the mid-street to valet park or park in the lot. My cuz, newly wife and friends wanted to hang & dance there. I checked the Yelp reviews and just dreaded...luckily, It wasn't crowded --guess Alison S' word is out that it's "actually just Hell." Heaven & Hell is situated across from Maggie Moo's (I like that name!) in what looks like an apartment at one point. That being said, it felt like I was back at a college house party with pschodelic posters/paintings on the wall, tripping on acid (never touched it), lights flashing, everyone moving in slow mo like you're in a circus fun house. This part was "Heaven" (second floor). I didn't even bother to hang out in "Hell" (first floor). Drinks are not as cheap as we had thought --about $9/drink. I have been to here with my best friend because this is the only place he goes in Adams Morgan(don't know why tho). Parking is torture enough. Cover is $5 and drinks really aren't that strong... at all. Bartenders are straight though. The levels are... Heaven: for house and Black Eyed Peas(after Fergie) fans. Ethereal, lots of blacklight, unicorns on the walls(I swear!), that type of deal. Green Island. People to lazy to climb the stairs to go to Heaven or Hell. Heaven and Hell has become a favorite spot for my friends since last summer. However, I will say we always drink [a lot] before/while we are there. I don't know if it would as fun if we were sober. We especially love this spot in the summer. We've only been there on Friday and Saturday nights. It's a 5 dollar cover. It really doesn't get live until like 11:30/12. But finding parking in Adams Morgan is hell, so you better leave time for that. Downstairs in Hell the music is reggae, hip hop, r&b, go go, rap.. Hell is HOT. A lot of body heat, kinda dingy and certainly many creeps on many occasions. When I say creeps, I mean old creepy men lurking, trying to get on anything with legs! They have huge fans to TRY to keep it cool. All the furniture around the perimeter of the floor looks like it came from a garage sale off the street. Behind the bar is a sign written on some loose leaf "NO TIPS, NO LOVE" or something like that. I've been to basement bars in Adams Morgan, but this part of this bar is in pretty bad shape, especially when you consider the other two floors. The bathroom is also dingy. BUT, when I'm out here with my girls, I REALLY DON'T CARE. I'm not thinking about the decor, and neither is anyone else, when we're in here drinking. Just thought I'd mention that.. Purgatory has about the same vibe, same music, just a little nicer and definitely fewer creeps. The bathroom is always down on this floor. Heaven seems like a completely different place. There is A/C, nice[r] furniture, the bars are nicer. There are full bathrooms, although they stink at times. It's much bigger upstairs. They play mostly Top 40 I believe. The drinks are expensive [at least for my broke college student pockets] and watered down or just taste like juice, so I try to refrain from getting drinks. Unless someone is buying me one of course =) People aren't just standing around, everyone is just trying to live it up! read more

I've been here twice, 1x to Heaven and 1x to Hell. In Heaven on the 2nd floor they were video spinning 80s hits like Whitney Houston "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" with colored strobe lights and we're the ONLY people on the floor and indeed in the entire bar. LOVED IT! I used to love going to Spilt Milk at Red and well, if you enjoyed that with friends then wtih a little alcohol this scenario I just described in Heaven could live up to its name, Went to Hell for Halloween a few years back. My friends and I were the best dressed folks there -- meaning the only folks dressed for Halloween? Or perhaps we went there on 2 difference occasions... Binge drinking makes my mind fuzzy... For the most part, I really liked the DJs who spun on Sundays -- a mix of dancehall, hip-hop,and booty thumpin music. The floor is small with room to literally sit or stand on the wall and you meet interesting characters. The only snag was when they started spinning some song about watching homos burn or something, my friends had to leave the floor. Overall, after experiencing this booty shaking FREE dance night on Sunday, I vowed never to return to Bar Nun for their Sunday Ladies' Nights which spins similar music (on repeat). I would return. I'm trying to write this review with a grain of salt. This is not a bar for me. It's a college bar. For college kids. That I stumbled into one night in Admo. Complaining about it and giving it one star would be like walking into a club and being shocked they're more expensive, or into a dive bar and perplexed as to how dirty it is. So I am going to think hard and write it as a perspective of 19 year old Rich. My chalked ID totally worked. I don't even think they care. The shot girl was super hot. The shots though were not.
