Just ordered take out and while the food is good. I'm a bit confused by the portion of the Pork Chop Fried Rice. In other photos of it when people dine in, there are 2 portions of the pork chop. But it seems as though for my take out, I only got one portion? They just opened recently and the food taste and quality will warrant me giving them another try. Stopped by after shopping at the Menlo Park Mall to grab a bite to eat. The restaurant itself is clean and modern. I had the pork and crab bao buns, my boyfriend had the chicken bao buns, and we each had a steamed pork bun. I absolutely LOVED the bao buns! Delicious, light, with a flavorful soup broth. I enjoyed the steamed pork bun, but in my opinion it was a little dry. Service was quick and attentive. Would absolutely return and recommend. read more

The spring rolls were ok. The soup was delicious and I'm not a big fan of wonton soup. I thought the fried rice was a bit too oniony and a little salty. The chicken dumplings and bao buns were ok. This was a great experience! The restaurant was nice inside and had a great atmosphere. The service was phenomenal. All the servers and hosts were so friendly and welcoming. The food came out quickly and was all good! The soup dumplings were delicious. There is definitely less soup in them then other ones I've had, but the wrappers were thin and the filling was delicious. The scallion pancakes were really great. Super flaky, oily but not too oil, and tasted amazing with the sauce. The cucumber salad was a huge hit too. They were fresh and had a delicious sauce on them. Definitely a good light part of an otherwise heavier meal. The baby back ribs were very good as well. We struggled eating around the bones but the taste was great and the meat was tender. The spicy dumplings were not too spicy at all. But the shrimp filling was delicious and so they still tasted good. Finally, the pork buns were tasty but on the drier side. A cute Asian themed interior with bamboo artifacts, very family friendly restaurant with extremely fast service. We ordered the scallion pancakes and chicken popcorn for the kids, followed by orders of signature soup dumplings, followed by spicy chicken noodles and shredded beef with rice. Had jasmine tea while kids had their juices. The star was clearly the colorful soup dumplings which was a kid pleaser, even the very simple chicken popcorn was delicious. The noodles could have been a bit spicier, had to add the chili oil, didn't try the beef but could tell it was a better than the noodles. Highly recommended soup dumplings, and chicken popcorn, will definitely try again. The appetizers clearly outshine the main dishes, next time will order different kinds of dumplings and other dim sum highlights. I really enjoyed my time at Ugly Dumpling!! You can reserve a table in advance, and even though we were a little late for our reservation due to traffic, they still accommodated us and we were seated within 15 minutes. As a vegetarian, I found there were a good amount of choices to order!! Some of my favorite items were the Spicy Vegan Wontons, Scallion Pancakes, and Vegan Noodles with Sesame Sauce. We also ordered the Vegan Dumplings and Vegetable Mushroom Fried Rice. The spicy items could have been more spicy in my opinion, but flavors were good. I wish there were vegetarian/vegan options for the soup dumplings!! They also have a large selection of tea drinks and they were all very good - not too sweet and had nice flavor!! I only ever been here once and the first time I tried to go, it was an hour wait. It may have been very early on when it just opened, but whatever, it happens. Nonetheless, I think their options and prices are reasonable. I did enjoy my meal, and if you like soup dumpling but can't wait until dim sum to have it...this spot has a good selection that you definitely won't find at a typical dim sum. We also went with a large group and they accommodated the 12 of us. Had a good time except that my wife left her Life Time water bottle behind. We called and they put it aside for us to collect. EXCEPT perhaps with the fast service came with our food not being warm enough (minus the cucumber salad, which should be cold). The pork xlb was good in flavor, but lacked the soup. sad. The sesame noodles had great texture, though I felt like the sauce needed more OOMPH. Same with the shrimp fried rice. It was just okay. We found that putting extra chilli oil, in which I appreciate that they keep at your table to add, made the dish better. The cucumber salad was probably the best dish. Crunchy, fresh, great ratio of spice & vinegar. Overall - 6/10. Way better authentic places around town. Though not terrible. Our 1st visit tonight to Ugly Dumpling was very enjoyable. The ambiance is chill and comfortable, the service is pretty good, and the food was delicious. Husband had pork & shrimp dumpling soup - nice broth & dumpling. Shared the garlic green beans, which were perfect, stir-fried noodles with shredded beef (had some bok choy) very good, crystal shrimp dumplings & pork / shrimp shumai. Nothing we didn't like, although not a big pork eater. Took home some leftover green beans & noodles. The dishes are enough for 2-3 people, dumplings you may want to try 2-4 types. Also a fan of scallion pancakes, so that would be a thing to try when we come back. Would have liked beverage refills. Had water/soda. Would try iced tea but thought the price was a little high. I ended up here on a Sunday night with a group of six and although they were busy we were sat quickly and served just as fast! Everything we tried was delicious. The Chicken XLB was flavorful and we ordered the cutest red bean buns that were decorated like piglets. Perfect shareable portions, we all ended up trying each other's dishes. Recently had the opportunity to try out Ugly Dumpling. I was quite sad when I saw Quaker Steak and Lube had shut down because I used to quite enjoy their food, but was excited for Ugly Dumpling to open. Tried out the variety of soup dumplings. Didn't love the truffle or chicken XLB but the others were good, though there are several other restaurants I'd pick before ugly dumpling if I'm in the mood for XLB in the future. The garlic string beans were pretty good. I wouldn't be opposed to coming back if someone suggested it, but probably won't be running to come back. Service was very good though. read more

This is a dumpling spot located in a strip mall. Great place to meet up with friends for a quick bite. There's a 99 Ranch, Bakery, Korean Chicken place just to name a few shops. Ugly Dumpling was very clean. You can see the people making all sorts of dumplings through a large glass window. We ordered scallion pancakes, wings and a few types of dumplings. Everything was good. The place was very well lit and nicely decorated. Staff were helpful accommodating to a big group. As far as the food, some were a little underwhelming and not as flavorful. The ambiance at Ugly Dumpling is really cool with lots of spots for nice photos. I love the window where you can see the dumplings being made, it's so fun! Service was quick but I would say that the food itself is really nothing special; it's not bad but it's just average. I was really excited to try the soup dumplings but I feel like they were kind of lacking in flavor. The dumplings also fell apart really easily which is disappointing because I lost most of the soup. Shockingly, the dumplings are the least desirable item on the menu. We tried the long bao sampler, so had them all. Found them to be gummy on the outside and not tasty on the inside. A bit disappointed in the food as I was looking forward to this new, cool spot. But too be honest, I found the food to be a bit overpriced and underwhelming. The portions are not extremely generous so I felt like I had to order extra food. I will say I appreciate that they have non-pork soup dumplings which is hard to find. So if I were to introduce someone for the first time to soup dumplings, I would maybe come here but overall, I don't know that I would visit otherwise. Was excited to try this place being a lover of soup dumplings and a huge fan of Din Tai Fung. I would say average at best. Service was almost non existent .. waitress never checked on us after food arrived and throughout the meal. Basically a bunch of the staff were just standing around gabbing and not paying attention. The food came out lightning fast. Ribs and Fried pork dumplings came out in less than 5 mins. Lead me to believe it was all premade and maybe even microwaved. Rest of the meal - fried rice, xlb dumplings, spinach, fried pork all came out 5 mins after that to my surprise. There is no timing or spacing around the food service. I was so excited to come and check this new place out and it was really fun and cool upon entering. The interior and decor is really fun and bright. Good for photos! The service was so amazing. The receptionist, the waiters, and the manager were all super friendly and smiley and even complimented my hair which was a really nice surprise haha! The food is pretty good too. We had a few different dishes to try for our first time. The soy garlic wings were crispy and the sauce was nice too. The vegetable stir fried noodles had a really good al dente texture and it had a lot of residual heat from the wok which adds to the flavor. The wonton soup was really clear and light. It's a good dish as a palate cleanser between other heavier flavored dishes! The pork bao was steamed really well and stayed hot inside for quite a while. The bao and the meat was tasty and had a hint of ginger. The manager came by to ask us how we were enjoying our food and mentioned that it is currently a soft opening so any positive or negative feedback would be greatly appreciated and be heavily considered and discussed with the kitchen. A lot of good things, a few tweaks here and there sure, but I think it is off to a good start and will grow and continue with more time and feedback. Had food a few times from here--both pickup and dine in. Food was always a great temperature and they provided soup spoons and chopsticks with to go orders. For dine in, they also have utensils if you would prefer. Staff was very attentive and friendly, but my one plight is the food came out a little slower than anticipated. Our appetizer came out after our entrées but I am not sure if the waiter understood we wanted it to come out first since there is not an appetizer section. I would say ordering for pickup would bring this review up to a 4 star but dine in has some room for improvement. Not sure if this is useful, but they carry pepsi products but do not have mountain dew. The inside has cute designs and they have their little dumplings on the packaged utensils. As a mom of 2 toddlers, I dread the dining experience. My main concerns are: 1) is there anything on the menu my kids will actually eat 2) how long can my kids sit without going socially unacceptably crazy and I have to high tail out of there 3) am I going to have a good time This place checked boxed all 3. My kids enjoyed ugly dumpling as much as I did... particularly the ground pork noodles, and the mochi red bean buns. They managed to hang around the spacious booth in the (super fast) time it took for us to order and eat. The amazing waiter checked in on us frequently, despite the dinner crowd coming in. And because of that, I kept on placing more and more orders =P I ate to my hearts content. My favorite was definitely the XLB sampler, but they weren't quite DTF quality. Skip the shumai (meh) and definitely get the scallion pancakes. I wish for more cheaper veggie options. The bill came out to be more than $115... too high for a 5 star experience. read more

It's a good intro to dumplings and xiao long bao (soup dumpling) to non-Chinese patrons. I think the pan fried buns and xlb were on point but the execution of other dishes were not as great: jajang mein with Sichuan pepper sauce, beef noodles, fried pork noodles, egg rolls. The taste of the sauce or soup is too sweet and not flavorful. The fried rice and popcorn chicken were good, and the kids really liked the tiger bubble tea. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating for small and large groups. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed as it was difficult for her to get utensils and more orders. My daughter was waiting for a clean spoon and didn't get it until she was done with her meal. There are plenty of other dumpling restaurants in the area that are more authentic in taste. read more

Food on the other hand was very disappointing. Portions were very small for how much you are paying. Everything we ordered lacked oriental flavors. I felt like they were holding back on the authentic spices of how this type of food should taste. Soup dumplings barely had any soup in it. Beef noodle soup tasted bland. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants to date! The food was AMAZING, the service was fast and very nice, and the atmosphere was trendy and clean. They also even had a spot where you can see them making the dumplings which was extremely cool. I would say my favorite dishes I shared with my family had to be the spicy wontons, xio long bao sampler (with the vinegar ofc), steamed pork buns, and shrimp fried rice.
