Anyone who works for a living knows the feeling: you've had a long day, the kids have activities…read moretonight, and even though the fridge is full from your last trip to the grocery store you have no clue what's for dinner. So you fumble through the kitchen and create the same ol' same ol' recipe you've thrown together a zillion times in the past. "Someday," you say to yourself "I'm going to try some new recipes." But who has time for that?! Well, maybe you don't, but Oleg down at Salt Pepper & Oil does! SPO is a fairly new business with a twist on the current "meals ready to cook" trend that's taking busy local households by storm. Owner Oleg is a BTC Culinary School grad and former employee of some restaurants you've definitely heard of. In other words, he knows food. And he knows it well. And he's now made it his business to create delicious, locally-sourced recipes to cook at home. Yes, Oleg is pretty much a dream come true for us busy folks! What sets SPO apart - other than those amazingly fresh ingredients - are the fact that you can order as much or as little as you want. Just you and the spouse for dinner one night? Order a single entrée, make a salad, and you've got a meal. Big crowd coming over next Saturday? Order multiple portions and you're going to impress the heck out of your guests. And the BEST part? Oleg does all the work for you! Everything arrives pre-chopped in individual numbered baggies. You simply "add #1" to the pan, "mix in #2" and follow the easy-to-read directions until - quite miraculously - you've got a beautiful meal ready to serve. It's so easy even my cooking-challenged spouse has managed to churn out some dinner deliciousness when I'm not home! And it's a great way to teach the kids how to cook. SPO's menu also changes weekly, so there is always something new to choose from when you order ahead on the website. One of my recent favorites was the Chicken Yakisoba, which Oleg had featured at his recent Yelp event and which I was dying to try again. There are also always a couple of "same day" favorites you can grab as well. Try the spaghetti and meatballs - they are DIVINE. (And this is coming from someone who is known for making pretty darned good meatballs herself!) And finally, being able to order just one thing or several is nice when trying to budget and plan for the next week's meals. You don't have to commit to five nights worth of meals, or giant entrees when you're only cooking for one. I found the value to be very good, especially considering the prep work is already done, the meals are delicious, and I don't have to THINK about what's for dinner! Thank you, Oleg, for bringing your delicious talents right here to Bellingham. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Gentlemen, (and modern, working ladies), if you are looking for an opportunity to woo your favorite…read moredate, but your culinary creativity involves a can of Spaghettios or throwing a piece of meat on the grill, let me suggest you stop by Salt, Pepper & Oil. SPO will elevate your meal times, and might help your chances for a little "dessert" with your special someone if you do the dishes too. Owner Oleg has pre-sliced and diced fresh, local ingredients, bagged and numbered the items, and prepared a simple recipe indicating which item to throw into the skillet first. You save time, energy and money with none of the hassle of finding a classy recipe, shopping for high-end ingredients, or butchering your finger with a knife. If you can turn on a stove and cut open a bag with scissors, you have all the skills you are going to need. You just need to go online, select from the current week's gourmet menu options and then schedule your pick-up or delivery time. The meal can be decreased in size to accommodate those who strike out and end up dining alone or increased in size for those feeding a family of___. Voila, a fresh, tasty, home-cooked meal can be prepared by you in your kitchen in about 15 minutes. Hopefully your "on-after" with your main squeeze lasts longer than that considering the thoughtful, delicious meal you prepared without all of the hard work.

Perhaps you'd be able to unlock it after writing 500 reviews, like some sort of yelp/super mario hybrid. Alfresco Tonight is described best by the creators as: "Alfresco brings together old friends, with new, celebrating great food, public space, spontaneity, and surprise. In a flash mob fashion, diners meet, set up, share food, and dismantle. The location is kept secret till the evening prior. Part slow food, part art installation, Alfresco is an urban curiosity." The creators of Alfresco are aiming to encourage local consumption, a heightened appreciation of the outdoors, increased community together-ly-ness, delicious eating, and sustainability via the 'leave no trace' motto. Find me something NOT to love about this concept. The most recent Alfresco night took place at the Davie Street community garden. Little tea lights glimmered while folks from all walks chatted merrily amongst autumn leaves. Some were even able to boast about the fruits of their own garden plot. Something about bringing people together in this way is just really wonderful. How often do you share a meal with someone new, or eat something totally unheard of only to find out it's manna. All this while gaining a deeper appreciation for the city and those locally sourced items that can be found right at our fingertips? So what do you say, Halifax? Who wants to try this Van based trend and picnic with me? :) ps: this event is free other than the cost of creating your own pot-latch style dish!

Several people who walked in had to wait at least 30 minutes. The service is quick and efficient, and they are fast and attentive with our requests or clearing our plates. The interior is a bit on the older side and outdated looking, and it can definitely feel muggy inside with all the continuously bubbling hot pots. I ordered the Beef Blade Eye Hot Pot Combo ($19.95) and I think it's a great deal. It comes with a plate of meat, a bunch of vegetables and side items like fish balls, tofu, shrimp, etc., choice of rice, udon or vermicelli, a drink, and a soft serve! I chose to get the udon, a yakult green tea, and the taro soft serve. The ingredients are decently fresh and everything is so efficient. I feel like you can't go wrong for all these things and at this price!
