Didn't try this place till recently. Anyways I think it's one of the best value places in Vancouver to buy meat buns now! Their dai bao (pork bun with salted egg) is only around $2, which is super rare these days, AND they actually taste pretty good. Their ham sui gok (deep fried pork dumpling) is also delicious, highly recommended trying it as well. Next time I want to try the soy milk too, would make a good breakfast. read more

Saw the photo of the pests but know that it is an old photo and that rodents are in ALL food establishments, not always their fault. I have been purchasing ready-to-eat food from this place once in a while for a few years, but haven't significantly reduced the frequency after the rodent story. It is the attitude of the staff towards cleanliness and hygiene the puts me off. However, they do have very good prices, for example, I can get a "small" portion (enough to fill me up for lunch) of chow mein for $3.50. This time I saw they had 50 pieces of dumplings for $6 so I gave it a try. They said they didn't have anything readily available, and if I waited for 15 minutes I could get a pack that is freshly made. I waited and it came in a box and not a see-through plastic bag. I didn't think of checking to see what it looked like, If I had I wouldn't have purchased. Each dumpling is a tiny blob of mushy dough, that was it. I am a terrible cook and I think I could have done a better job. I regretted giving this place another chance, never again. read more

"Funny", how does this even work on yelp. Please advise. My aunties been buying these "chick/chicken cookies" for me for years. I've been on a trip recently, and have been hitting up many restaurants and cafe's this week for lost meals. It was my first time here despite the Ratatouille incident. Mainly because this cookie is the best. Galaxy cookie also sells this same cookie, but I like it chewy and crunchy rather than puffy and bland. To be fair, If a rat or a pigeon attacked a Japadog I'd still visit post incident, because these things happen. Chill out guys! Nobody is making you come here. If they have English menu, definitely 5 stars. Around lunch time, inside of bakery turns chaotic, but very fast service. Just be patient. They have dumpling in to-go-box at wall. You can ask which dumpling is available because customer side can't see inside of the box. read more

I was shocked and repulsed by the recent google review and the following website : www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/8whpwg/rat_sitting_on_the_food_at_jin_sui_xiang_bakery/ in which it shows two photos of a rat walking on the food at this establishment, during business hours! Two other customers are seen taking pictures of this rat in the photos as well. Another person wrote of finding rat feces in the pork chow mein after unknowingly eating half of it then subsequently getting stomach cramps/ diarrhea for 9 days. Won't be going there anymore. Also, their "Vancouver health inspection reports" (www.inspections.vcha.ca) consistently shows many critical violations in which they need to address and start taking these health issues seriously. read more

A definite hole in the wall gem! I visited the store in Richmond's Central Square across from Aberdeen and I fell in love with this place! A very busy little bakery place with many bakery options. In addition to bakery items, it seems like they are more known for their freshly made, piping hot dim sum items. We ordered the popular Chinese rice flag noodles with egg and it was delicious. Only waited a few minutes after ordering and it was made fresh and super hot. Only two small tables to dine in but seems like most people order to go from this place. A very affordable price at $4.95 with shrimp and was definitely worth the little wait. Also ordered one side dim sum order and it only costs $1 each for such a big sized item. Would definitely go back to try other items. If only I lived in that area, I would probably go their twice a week! read more

I went there to try it for the first time. I got sticky Fried Rice. I was not impressed. 1st while I told the counter person what I wanted, their back was turned to me. They were working. The sales person delayed processing my order while she still pack stuff with her back facing me. It would have been nice if she had said, i'll be there in a second. Second. The sticky fried rice was stone cold. It had to be breaking health code becase of the very few bits of meat in there. The only good thing was that the sticky fried rice portion is big any only cost 3.50 after taxes. Would I go there again??????? Only if I was starving and wasn't at home. read more

Aha, found 'Golden Wheat' bakery! So hard to find when they changed the name, in English anyhow. This was the amazing 'Golden Wheat' bakery on Gore St. in Chinatown that closed down. I looked for where they moved to on Victoria Dr. but never saw any signage for Golden Wheat. Finally stopped in the hood and walked into this busy bakery and discovered that this is it! The Chinese name apparently is still the same, but that sure doesn't help when you don't read Chinese. Anyhow, glad I found the place where they sell good fried pork dumplings and sesame balls (Westerners unfamiliar with these items may not find these fried items palatable). This place sells very traditional, freshly made take out dim sum. The rice rolls were selling out and I didn't have time to wait for the next batch. Tried the apple tarts, good. Better than the ones at Newtown bakery where they're heavier in texture. Will have to try a few of the other items. Sadly, the buns are not labeled in English so will have to ask what's in them. read more

It's pretty good for what it is. Some is hit and miss I like the deep fried sticky dumpling and taro cake. The beef rice rolls are alright for the price. It's not the dim sum type. The sticky rice is really average. This is a good place for takeout. The price is relatively cheep. I think they made improvements from when they first opened. I was a little concerned about food safety when i saw it all opened at room temperature and flies flying around. read more

My favourite little hole in the wall bakery. If you're looking for some amazing steamed pork/meat buns, some sticky rice and even noodles. This place is amazing. My ultimate childhood favourite is the Chinese sausage bun. Who doesn't love a soft pillowy bun with a hot juicy salty sausage inside (teehee)! This bakery makes a lot of Cantonese style items that my mother used to make for my family when I was growing up. Now that she's getting on in years and doesn't have the energy to make them anymore, this is my go to when I'm craving things like steamed & fried dumplings, steamed taro and radish cake, and deep fried sweet red bean balls. We used to frequent their Chinatown location until they closed and moved here. Parking can be a challenge as this is a busy local asian shopping area. I get sentimental every time I come here They also speak the local toysan dialect of my parents. The fun gor isn't one of my favourites as they don't have meat, which my mother always put in hers. Instead, my favourite dumpling is the gow choy goa, which sounds like dog/ vegetable/dog in Chinese to my untrained ears. I think they are pork and vegetable dumplings. Anyways, picked up a box of my favourite dumplings for less than $3 today. One drawback is that they can be inconsistent on busy traditional holidays. We have purchased items on special days like the lunar new year and there was a long line up and items had less filling or were smaller in size than they normally are. But there was still hordes of people buying them. Oh, and their menu is all in Chinese so you'll just have to point or guess at what is inside the boxes. Otherwise, if you know what you want, you can try to pronounce the words or describe what you're looking for. This can be annoying if you're like me and want to think ahead of what to order before you get to the till. read more

This is the Golden Wheat Bakery from Chinatown that has closed down. So glad to have found it because they make the best beef rice rolls (no one in town makes it like them where the rice wrap resembles ribbons that are rolled together with beef that is not overly processed like other places where you can no longer tell it's beef), their fried pork dumplings are also the best in town because they are not skimpy on the filing, and they make decent steamed buns (IMO not quite as good as New Town's but good). And you must get their fun goa. They make their skin just right (perfect chewiness) and their filing of pork and water chestnuts makes for a great tasting dumpling. read more

If you are on a tight budget, this is the place you should go to grab a good filling bite for your tummy. No one can beat their price and the quantity of the food they gave you. For the price you pay, the quality of their food are up to standard but quantity are way beyond! You won't feel ripped off. LOL Agree on the food safety issue, not recommend for re-heating or keeping them for later. CASH ONLY and be prepared for the line up out to the door. All were tasty but all the labels were written in Chinese so I had to ask one of the younger customers to read it to me in English... Aaaah, how frustrating!
